On September 30th 1921 Hollywood film star Deborah Kerr was bor.
She spent the first three years of her life in Helensburgh, where her parents lived with Deborah's grandparents in a house on West King Street. Kerr had a younger brother, Edmund ("Teddy"), who became a journalist. He was killed in a road rage incident in 2004.
Deborah was a ballet dancer, appearing at Sadler’s Wells no less, before switching to acting when she became too tall. The theatre would become her first love, despite her enormous movie success, and she returned to it time and again.
Despite numerous nominations Kerr was to spend her career withonly one major honour ( a Golden Globe) from the various ceremonies she attended, 6 Academy Award Nominations, 4 BAFTA Award Nominations, and 1 Primetime Emmy Award Nomination, her credits would include some fantastic films including, from here to Eternity, King Solomon's Mines, Separate Tables and Julius Caesar, her costars read like a who's who of Hollywood greats, Marlon Brando, Spencer Tracy, James Grainger, Hayley Mills and Cary Grant amongst many others.
For me there are two films that stand out for Deborah, the first, From here to Eternity and THAT beach scene with Burt Lancaster, where they were said to have had an affair, and one of my mums favourite films, The King and I, it's a pity she didn't have the voice to sing in the film, they were dubbed over, but the chemistry between Kerr and Yul Bymer was a joy to watch, he won best actor, Kerr had to make do with a Golden Globe, her only award in her career.
Deborah Kerr has been described as "an artist of impeccable grace and beauty, a dedicated actress whose motion picture career has always stood for perfection, discipline and elegance." and in 1994, having already received honorary awards from the Cannes Film Festival and BAFTA she would finally get her hands on a coveted Oscar, albeit an honourary one.
Deborah Kerr passed away October 16th 2007 in Suffolk after suffering Parkinson's Disease, her husband of 47 years, Peter Viertel died of cancer less than three weeks later.
I was going to pos pics of Deborah Kerr but have decided to go with tDeborah singing "an affair to remember" from the 1957 movie of the same name.

Work-in-progress: Heathen by Deborah Joy Peter

AN EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER 2 OF HEATHEN
My morbid sensibilities aside, Deidra proved a rapturous diversion when I answered the door at first ring of the bell. Mane pulled back in a sturdy knot, her towering neck, complemented by a cream-coloured pendant and dangling earrings that shimmered as they swayed, was every bit the show-stopper. Gently glossed lips cockered me with the twinkle of finely spoken verbiage, causing tingling to a degree. I had half-expected cleavage but her modesty arrived just in time to school me in a modicum of decency. Her collarbones popped from behind bare velvety skin, while an ebony crew neck tee shielded womanly opals from the naked eye. Still, they spoke volumes as loud as double Ds spanning a full 42-inch yield—a wild suspicion that was later confirmed. She stood donned in a silky bohemian drape that boasted mad pelvic engineering on its long way down to accessorised ankles that jangled with every rhapsodic step.
As I prepared to match my hello with an outstretched hand, she inched closer and upgraded my measly reception with a peck to my left cheek before switching to the right. Her light scent was inviting. It was as if a spring burst of freshly-bloomed lilacs had sprung from the garden that was Eden on strict orders from its keeper and landed on my once pale but now flushed face. When the moment was past, she held out the bottle of Chardonnay she had brought with her and affirmed, “For us.” I led her into my living room and gave her the go-ahead to get comfy before I re-emerged with two paper cups filled almost to the brim and joined her on the soft couch. Urgently hoping then that my razor-sharp wit would materialise to show me off, I was left high and dry, and so, sipped white wine instead like the lumbering imp that I was while gawking on sheepishly.
“Excellent choice. Super bubbly,” I blurted out spastically.
Sensing I was overly on edge and unintentionally dishevelled in my organisation of the night’s proceedings, my classy friend opted to have a little bit of fun at my expense.
“So, I bet you swung some fancy roast into the oven,” she joshed, keeping a straight face.
That cheeky kumquat knew I had nothing. I couldn’t help but chuckle in retort before announcing: “Touché! I’ll grab the cheese and crackers and order us a pizza in fifteen.”
She threw her head back and laughed. “Wow, a whole pizza pour moi,” she jibed and added, “Boy, you sure know how to make a girl feel special.”
She was stupendous, hilarious, and unafraid to show it. Thus, I piled on for mutual amusement. “Hey, I am not a total shmuck. It’s the least I can do and I always try to do the very least.”
She giggled generously, glorifying my impeccably-timed swipe at spontaneous hilarity. “A cutup, are you? Well, don’t exhaust your material all at once.”
That cracked me up. By the end of that first hour, we had warmed up to each other effortlessly and I was right at home in more ways than one. Where I would normally stick out like a sore left thumb at a gay parade, this dazzling thing made a grizzly oaf like me seem normal. How I’d traversed halfway across the globe and chanced upon my unsurpassed complement in a land whose main vernacular was something unheard of anywhere else was beyond me. She chattered and I listened until it was my turn.
“How is your English this good?”
She chewed on her beef pepperoni slice, held up an index finger, signalling for me to hold for a second, swallowed, took a gulp of white, and replied in between chortles, “Gunther, tell me this. Before you landed on our seaweed-strewn shores, did you think we lived in trees, swung from branch to branch, thumped our hairy chests, ate wild bananas, and dangled upside down?”
I was quick to inform her that the thought had crossed my mind once or twice, but she had clued in on my tomfoolery. Then, switching to a more serious note, she went on to elucidate: “I was brought up on Hollywood movies and solid literature dreamt up by the likes of Enid Blyton, Charles Dickens, George Eliot, and Mark Twain. If I stand out, it’s thanks to the nurturing of an English-speaking mum.”
She proved increasingly mesmerising with each passing minute, and I became steadily more inebriated with every shot of Johnnie Walker down my throat during our second hour together. In that short span, I’d learnt that she had come from humble beginnings, secured an education through a life-saving award, loved to write but pursued hotel management at her old lady’s say-so, enjoyed watching the rain, hadn’t seen snow in her life, and was an avid reader who devoured books for breakfast, lunch, tea, and supper.
BIO
As for the book dubbed Heathen, it is a pilot novel project by long-standing Malaysian published specialist writer, business journalist, freelance editor, content strategist, and first-time book author, Deborah Joy Peter, who operates via her self-established bespoke banner, Buzzing Bee Productions.
The literary work is somewhere between a fiction- and nonfiction-type memoir based on the life and times of a self-deprecating older male who uses comedy and/or humour as a defence mechanism to cope with and deflect from the realness of relationships, sex, women, romance, aging, other humans as well as his personal flaws. As such, it is graphic in some parts and funny in others, but assuredly, relatable and authentic throughout. She is a female author attempting to write in the hand of a mildly yet at times fully masculine male protagonist.

New Order Comic, pages 1-5.
[Ignore this ya’ll, I just want a visual in my blog for these five pages so far. I haven’t updated this doomed comic in four years, since 2016, it’s a very unambitious project. But, hey! I added two new pages today. I’m not sure if I’m going to add color to these, but you never know. [As stated before, Billie Ross is my pen name!]

“Love Will Tear Us Apart,” a single by Joy Division
Uncredited design and artwork by Peter Saville, Ben Kelly, and Trevor Key
Factory Records
⚜️ ARTWORK
Factory Records released “Love Will Tear Us Apart” in June 1980. Pictured is the uncredited sleeve and label artwork by Ben Kelly and Peter Saville for the UK 7” vinyl sleeve. [1]
The words of the song title had been etched upon a sheet of metal, which had subsequently been treated to a process of ageing with acid before being left exposed to weather with the intention being the resulting appearance of a slab of stone. [2]
A conversation with Kelly is now streaming on Art of the Sleeve’s Spotify podcast (# 19). The designer talks about his new book “Haçienda Landscapes,” as well as his experiences working with Factory Records, Sex Pistols, and OMD.

favorite books in the bible ?
oooh i love this question. so many let's go
old testament:
the pentateuch (genesis, exodus, leviticus, numbers, and deuteronomy). before my interest in christian theology, i am jewish: this is home. it's so beautiful. it is the origin of God's love story. the law is love: there is joy in studying these books.
judges- gives us so many "classic" Bible stories, and some of my favourites (think gideon and deborah). but it's also a very precious window into pre-monarchial israel.
tobit- not found in the protestant canon, the angel raphael helps a young man kill a demon. its a lot of fun
judith- also not found in the protestant canon. judith saves the hebrews by killing a foreign king. also a lot of fun.
song of songs- you will not find imagery like this anywhere else in the bible. it's so, so beautifully jewish. and it's an incredible celebration of love and sex that i think has been reduced down to allegory by the church in an extremely reductive way. (i'm not a huge fan of christian interpretation of song of songs, but bernard of clairvaux's sermons on it i think come closest to a good christianized interpretation.)
isaiah- i relate to isaiah on a personal level, and i find myself constantly returning to this book for guidance. just a solid, excellent book, and although i'm a natural depressive like jeremiah it's not so sad: there's more hopefulness in it than a lot of the major prophets.
ezekiel- seraphim babey!!!
daniel- the latest edition to the OT canon (meaning its the most recently written) but i love the imagery of daniel's visions and the presence of gabriel and michael in the text.
micah- i actually love all of the minor prophets because i think they're hugely overlooked, but micah has my favourite verse in the bible, micah 6:8: He has told you, O mortal, what is good;/and what does the Lord require of you/but to do justice, and to love kindness,/and to walk humbly with your God?
new testament:
the gospel of john- my favourite gospel since i was a kid. it receives a lot of extremely deserved flack for being the only gospel to explicitly name the jews as demanding christ's death (the other gospels only refer to them as "the crowd"). but it also gives us the logos concept and some incredibly poetic style.
1 and 2 corinthians- i find these to be some of paul's finest work and i always find myself returning to them. they're also some of the most misinterpreted paulean letters, which makes them incredibly interesting.
the epistle of james- james gets a lot of flack because luther hated the book but its a core text if you're interested in liberation theology and it is, again, extremely jewish: it actually mentions jesus and the crucifixion very little, but it does rail against the wealthy in a way that has been mysteriously ignored by modern christianity.
the epistle of jude- obsessed with jude. its basically the shorter version of 1 peter, but it also references the books of enoch (the only NT book to do so) and the hierarchies of angels, suggesting that culturally, jewish mysticism was not a fringe practice, and to me suggests that a lot of christ's teaching and theology was probably informed by it. (i have a bit of a preoccupation with jewish mysticism that almost made me convert fully to judaism, but the way its present in the NT tantalized me so much i swung towards christianity instead.)
revelation- i read this obsessively when i was a kid. i just think its so cool.
