How detailed can the dear creator letter be? I’m not sure if I should explain why I enjoy a ship or a trope? I’m using a new AO3 account so there isn’t much my gifter can find about me so I want to help them out as much as possible, but I also don’t want to hinder them by being too excessive 😅

It's not mandatory to follow this template tho, you can still write your own.

As to how detailed, I'd recommend talking about fandoms you love the most, and then the characters/pairings from those fandoms that you'd like to see a fanwork for. Lastly, you can mention your favorite tropes and here maybe you can mention three to five so your potential gift creator will have some leeway to choose.

The preference of gift creators really vary—some like all the details, some prefer just hints / less details, and unfortunately, we won't be able to tell during signups.
