High Profile Case Ends In High Profile Fashion
By Ben Lambert, University of Minnesota- Twin Cities Class of 2021
December 4, 2020
In May 2020 news broke that Deandre Baker, a former first-round pick for the New York Giants, along with another NFL player, Quinton Dunbar of the Seattle Seahawks, had both been arrested and charged with four counts of armed robbery. This seemed like a dire and quick end for the promising young career of Baker as he was then cut by the Giants and placed on the commissioner’s exempt list.
Three eyewitnesses claimed that Baker and Dunbar stole money, watches, and other valuables at a house party in Florida after a fight broke out. The witnesses also claimed that Baker and Dunbar committed the robberies while armed with semi-automatic weapons. Because of the severity of these allegations, the charges against Baker would put him behind bars for a minimum of ten years. Subsequently, the charges against Dunbar were dropped due to insufficient evidence. With polar opposite punishments handed out to Baker and Dunbar, something seemed to be off. To present a case based on no other type of evidence besides eyewitness accounts is already very challenging to do in court. Then on top of that, they decide to only prosecute one of the offenders. This all seemed very odd, but the events that followed were even more shocking than this dramatically unequal punishment.
This case turned out to be even more complex than originally thought. William Dean, the lawyer who represented the alleged victims in the case, would end up being charged with extortion after evidence was found of him requesting around $800,000 from Baker to split among his clients. The key eyewitnesses in the case also recanted their original statements and admitted that Baker was not involved in the incident, while also admitting to being paid to lie about his involvement in the incident. Evidence shows that Dean told Baker that as long as “the money was right” his clients would not proceed with the charges that were put up against Baker. Due to this scandalous behavior, the charges were dropped against Baker as the three eyewitnesses in the case were deemed untrustworthy. William Dean has since been arrested in Broward County and will face a new court case now as a possible charged criminal.
Baker’s attorney, Bradford Cohen, told reporters that from the beginning, he knew that this case was about extortion. He believes that the case never should have been filed in the first place due to the faulty evidence and shaky claims that it was based on. The fact that a celebrity was involved may have been a contributing factor in the court’s decision to proceed with the charges despite not having a particularly strong case.
Since the incident, Baker has now signed with the defending super bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, where he will be a part of their practice squad.Although this is not the same position that he was in a year ago as a starting corner, he will get another shot to prove that he belongs in the NFL.

No Video Of NFL’s Deandre Baker & Quinton Dunbar Robbing The Cookout
Source: Broward County Sheriff’s Office / Splash News
NFL players Deandre Baker and Quinton Dunbar currently stand accused of robbing a cookout. However, despite the rumors, the authorities are not in possession of any footage of the alleged incident.
At least, not yet.
Reports TMZ Sports:
Multiple people involved in the investigation had told us they were confident there was video from the May 13 incident — but a spokesperson for the Broward County State Attorney’s Office tells us straight-up there’s no video, “not that I’m aware of.”
One person involved in the case tells us cops are making an effort to speak with people in the vicinity to find out if the incident was captured on home surveillance video, including Ring doorbell cameras … and no, TMZ Sports has not seen any video of the incident either.
As we previously reported, Baker is facing 8 felony charges including armed robbery and aggravated assault — while Dunbar is facing 4 counts of aggravated assault.
Baker has already pleaded not guilty to all 8 of the felony charges he is facing.
According to witnesses, the NFL players, and a third man in a mask, robbed the attendees at a cookout in Miramar, FL on May 13. Allegedly Baker was the man in charge of the jux, thus the additional charges. According to cops, Baker even ordered the man in the red mask to shoot one of the attendees. The bandits made off with $12,000 in cash and $60,000 worth of expensive watches, and dipped out in exotic cars.
Both Baker and Dunbar are out on bond.
We absolutely cannot wait to hear both sides.

Giants DB Baker surrenders to police in armed robbery case
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — New York Giants cornerback DeAndre Baker turned himself in to police on Saturday at the Broward County Jail. Baker has been charged with four counts of armed robbery with a firearm and four counts of aggravated assault with a firearm. His lawyer, Bradford Cohen, says he has affidavits that will prove Baker’s innocence. Baker and Seattle Seahawks cornerback Quinton Dunbar were sought by police since Thursday, when arrest warrants were issued. Dunbar’s lawyer, Michael Greico, also says he has such affidavits. Cohen posted on Instagram that “We believe our client is innocent of all charges. We urge people not to rush to judgment. We have affidavits from several witnesses that exonerate my client.” Dunbar had not surrendered to police as of Saturday afternoon. On Friday, Greico said that “law enforcement and the state attorney’s office are both now aware that my client is innocent.” Police in Miramar, Florida, issued arrest warrants for both men after multiple witnesses accused them of an armed robbery at a party. Baker, 22, and Dunbar, 27, were attending a cookout at a Miramar home Wednesday night when a fight broke out, and Baker pulled out a handgun, the warrant said. Read the full article
