"Sweet Dreams" Yatsuhashi Succumbs...

CFVY was in a shambles. One half of the team was lying in the infirmary, total comatose, laying upon their beds like corpses. The only thing confirming that they still lived was the beep of the monitoring equipment. It was three nights since Yats and Velvet found Coco in the exact same condition as Fox.

After helping Velvet settle into bed, he climbed into his own. Taking one last look at the pair of empty beds, he closed his eyes... hoping things would be different in the morning...

Yats: This is not right...

Jaune: (warped and dark) You are more attentive than your teammates... it took them sometime before they understood...

Yats: Who...

Yats: Jaune? This makes no sense. How are you?

Jaune: In this place... under my control... nothing will...

Yats: It was you, wasn't it?

Jaune: You have to be more specific... quite a few things have been because of me...

Yats: Fox and Coco...

Jaune: Guilty as charged.

Yats: Undo it.

Jaune: Why do you think I can do such a thing... or would?

Yats: You fuck!

Jaune: Now, now, such language... you corrupt my babies...

Yats: What?

Jaune: On your left... the show is about to start...

Yats: (Looking to his left) What...

Yats: (Recognizing the village) NO!

Jaune: They're so hungry...

Yats: (Whirls about, blade at the ready) STOP THIS!

Jaune: Why would I do that?

Yats: Those are innoc...

Jaune: No one is innocent... everyone hides secrets. Dark impulses, twisted fancies... secrets only known to the darkness...

Yats: (Bracing himself to charge down into the village) I'll stop...

Yats whips around, his sword chambered to strike the presence that materialized behind him...

Jaune: Too late...

The Girl in Twilight: Series Reflection

There’s a comment on the first episode of The Girl in Twilight on VRV that I’ve found myself thinking about a lot over the course of this show: “It feels like an amateur writer accidentally turned out a masterpiece, but you can still tell that it was made by an amateur.“ That’s honestly a really apt summary, and I’m disappointed in myself for not being able to think of any better description. Perhaps I’m just too exhausted by this show to want to spare it any more thought than necessary. Whatever the case, though, the idea of an “amateur masterpiece” is something that pervades The Girl in Twilight like a raging infection, drawing attention to itself with every bungled misstep. It feels like the first draft of something that could have- and should have- been so much better than it ended up being. Perhaps one day, the people who made this show will hone their skills to the point where they can finally make something truly spectacular. And when that day comes, I’ll honestly be eager to see what they accomplish, because there’s so much in this show that suggests vast resources of untapped potential waiting to be released. It’s just a shame that so much of that potential was squandered here.

The Girl in Twilight is, simply put, a bad show. It’s got ugly, unappealing animation that rarely rises above passable quality, augmented with some actually impressive CG action spectacle that doesn’t gel with the 2D stuff at all. Its characters are all frustratingly empty and vapid, bereft of meaningful emotions to play with except for the 20% of the time they’re thrust into the spotlight. Its dialogue is painful to sit through, underbaked and trite and lousy with ingenuine attempts at pizzazz. And most unforgivably of all, it wastes Tomoyo Kurosawa, one of the best seiyuus in the business, on a character and performance that crush her to dust under the weight of the story’s inadequacies. It’s alternately boring and aggravating, with nothing that genuinely excites and no respite from the overwhelming drudgery that seeps in through every crack. But somewhere in the bowels of this compromised mess is a show I genuinely might have loved. Somewhere, beneath the bad animation and groanworthy character writing, is a story of fate and self-determination that might have actually struck a chord with me deeper than I ever could have expected.

Honestly, what makes this show so infuriating is in recognizing how much of it I so desperately wanted to like. Kumiko Fucking Oumae herself weaving a potent emotional narrative around multiple versions of the same character and bringing them all to life with distinct flair? Awesome. A story of girls bucking against the societal constraints that seek to box them into perfect little roles, finding their own strength and carving a better tomorrow? Love it. An explicitly confirmed lesbian relationship between two of the central characters? Yes, please. An exploration of grief and moving forward that spirals into an existential interrogation of the characters themselves as they confront their demons in fascinating netherworlds and surreal, symbolism-laden deamscapes? I can feel myself salivating already. If you pitched this show to me on paper, I would have greenlit a million seasons right then and there. But the show we actually got fails every single one of those exciting prospects. The bravura multi-character performance is shattered by an unbearably grating center, there’s not enough build-up for any of the girl vs society conflicts to ring true, the lesbian relationship barely even registers as a footnote, and by the time it gets around to that fascinating final episode it’s far too little, far too late. It’s a series of broken promises that just sting harder and harder the more I think about them.

I really wish this show were good. I wish this could be like Symphogear, where I come out of it singing its praises and encouraging everyone to check out this remarkable hidden gem. But The Girl in Twilight is a complete failure on every front, an exhausting 12 episodes that fail to live up to the grand dreams they so clearly aspired to. For that crushing disappointment, I give this show a score of:

And thankfully, the future is a lot more promising, because the next show on my list is a magical girl lesbian extravaganza that I actually have heard good things about:

Autism: A Family’s Journey

This short documentary follows the journey of J.R., the son of Lori and Jim Cairns.   When he was still a baby, Lori started to notice he could not make eye contact, cried a lot and could not communicate.  At two years old, he is diagnosed as autistic and mentally retarded and they were told that he would be institutionalized by age 17.  This diagnosis was made in 1996 when little was known about autism and the government offered few helpful resources and hope for any type of recovery.  Thanks to much work from parents, family and professionals, it is now known that it is a developmental disability that is on a spectrum with many different levels.  Many people still dismiss any hope of recovery but J.R. is living proof that it can happen. Having a grandson on the spectrum, I read or watch things all the time that have to do with autism.   Watching this documentary gave me hope and maybe can give hope to others who have an autistic person in their life.

Quietly, Sanguinius walked up to Magnus, and hugged him again, within this deamscape, emotions were powerful things, it didnt take long to sense his brothers distress. “Thats why I came back. And that’s why I’ll stay. No matter what the Emperor says or does. You are my brother. That,....that was not a Father.”

"Maggy?" Sanguinius's voice was quiet, his arms raching out to touch Magnus for the first time in 10,000 years, his fingertips glowing. It was an invitation of sorts to recieve love long overdue (@sanguiniusreborn have a cuddly purring Sang shortly after their first chat in 40k)

Wordlessly, Magnus immediately embraced his brother, forgoing his wings. That way he wouldn’t accidentally mutate his brother if Tzeentch decided to make a feather not cooperate. He also tried to make himself a little smaller, that way he could give Sanguinius a proper embrace and for it to be a little more comfortable. It put a little bit of strain on himself in order to do so, but he thought it was more than worth it.

Tanjiro is just so soft and gentle and kind and it makes me want to cry he tries to help everyone so so much and is made of love and his deamscape is an endless plane of warmth and gentleness and is populated by beings of pure kindness and that’s his strongest weapon
