Another Headcanon To Consider

I just want to make it clear that if I write this in any way that is incorrect or insulting to people who are deaf/hard of hearing that I absolutely take constructive criticism and please don’t hesitate to let me know what needs fixing!

I’m not terribly happy with this...so I might edit it later. But here it is for now!

I had a dream where Linh was deaf and now I gotta write a headcanon

So Linh flooded Atlantis when she was young, right

Headcanon that Linh suffered water damage to her ears during that incident

Her parents were so mortified that their hydrokinetic daughter hadn’t been able to keep it together in a literal city underwater (read: they were being dumpster fire parents) that when Linh complained of excruciating ear pain, they didn’t pay it any mind

During the tribunal concerning the flood, Linh doesn’t answer any questions asked of her

“I can’t understand you, I’m sorry” she says too softly to be understood

She can hear that they’re speaking, but cannot identify words; all she can properly hear in her ears is the deafening roar of rushing water, but this water she hears doesn’t speak to her

Tam has to be a sort of go-between in the tribunal (which he’d wanted to do to begin with, but wasn’t allowed to do until they realized Linh couldn’t hear them)

Elwin is brought in to check her over and he’s appalled by the damage in her ears

“Why didn’t you bring this young lady to me immediately”

Her parents have no answer

Elwin does what he can, but since she went so long untreated, there’s very little he can do

Linh feels like she’s spiraling down through a whirlpool of horrifying thoughts; elves are perfect, none of them have any issues with hearing...she’s flawed now. She’s the only elf flawed in this way. It’s almost worse than being Talentless. The water flawed her. The water, she feels, has control over her, can take away any other perfection she dares to hold to

Linh is sent to Exilium, Tam goes with her willingly, and all the while Linh’s hearing continues to fade into the endless roar of water, this water she wants to hate, but can’t

Tam steals forbidden cities leaping crystals and steals books on ASL (“what more are they going to do to us, Linh? They’ve already sent you to Exilium in your condition.”)

Linh and Tam work together to learn ASL as quickly as they can (thank god for quick elven brains)

Linh is determined not to give away the fact that she is hard of hearing to anyone at Exilium; no one else needs to know she’s flawed if she can help it

Tam can still talk to Linh in a voice she can hear with his shadows, and this is how he tells Linh what the instructors at Exilium are saying

Whenever they address her directly, Tam tells her what they’re saying (although she’s getting better and better at lip reading) and then she responds, speaking too quietly

Usually the Exilium instructors are adamant that no one interacts with one another, but they turn a blind eye to Linh and Tam—they know what befell her, and they see that she wants to hide it, and they let her. Hiding is what Exilium wants, anyway. They let her think she’s fooled them.

Linh and Tam live for a time with gnomes, who pick up ASL very quickly and don’t ask questions—Linh isn’t sure if she’s grateful or resentful of it. She settles on grateful

When Sophie and the rest of her friends end up in Exilium, Sophie makes contact with Tam like in the books

But Sophie notices Linh and sees her sign to Tam when she thinks no one is looking

Sophie is a polyglot, so she can understand sign language and is also fluent

Another day, when she catches Linh’s attention, she signs quickly “would you prefer I talk to you like this, or can you hear me if I speak to you telepathically?”

Linh is taken aback; to her knowledge, no other elves know any form of sign language (why would they when no other elves are deaf?)

Linh feels the shame start to creep over her—this other elf knows her secret, despite her best efforts—but Linh realizes, “if she can sign, then I’m not alone, not the only flawed one out there”

Linh signs that she doesn’t know if she can hear telepathic speech, but that Sophie can try it

Sophie transmits “my name is Sophie Foster, can you hear me?”

Linh hears it in her mind and almost cries right there; she hasn’t properly heard a voice other than Tam’s for years

Sophie and Fitz both transmit to her in Exilium, and when the rest of Sophie’s friends meet the twins, Sophie and Fitz help Linh understand everything being said (Sophie and Tam sign and Sophie and Fitz transmit)

When they work on breath control underwater, Linh almost runs away—she doesn’t want to be anywhere near water, let alone in it. Sophie transmits to her, helps the roaring in her ears fade to the background, keeps her mind from that spiraling whirlpool of doubt

Most of the time after that, Sophie will sign to Linh when they’re all in a group together and they’re all talking, but Sophie will transmit to her privately every now and then for private conversation

Linh likes Fitz and Sophie’s other friends, but sort of gravitates towards Sophie—Sophie knows even more ASL than her or Tam, and teaches them both even more; Sophie is a natural with ASL, too, so signing with her is easy for Linh

Linh asks if Sophie knows anyone else who can’t hear, and Sophie tells Linh about a hard of hearing classmate from back when she lived with humans; “I couldn’t sign with him back then, because I hadn’t manifested as a polyglot yet, but he was one of the few kids who didn’t make fun of me for being so smart. There are loads of humans who are hard of hearing, sometimes from birth, and all the ones I’ve met are really understanding people.”

Linh remembers the hard of hearing humans when she takes the oath to join the Black Swan; they left Sophie with humans, and humans aren’t perfect, but they’re better at dealing with flaws than elves are...if they can help their world with human knowledge, Linh wants to be a part of it

Whenever Linh is occupied with something but wants to be part of the conversation, she lets Sophie into her mind and lets Sophie transmit the conversation to her

She doesn’t want to be enhanced, ever; she’s afraid that enhancing her ability will give the water even more control over her, possibly take even more away from her

Linh does not want to go to Atlantis during the events of Nightfall; her fear of the place is magnified by the trauma of her loss of hearing

But she hates how dead inside Sophie is because of her missing human parents, and she insists on coming along on the rescue mission, even though Sophie doesn’t want to make Linh uncomfortable (“we can find another way in without hydrokinesis—I know you hate it down there”)

When Atlantis begins to flood, Linh, surprisingly, is ready—she’s had years to think of how she would have made her incident better if she’d just known more about hydrokinesis

The water calls to her mind over the roaring waves in her ears and she knows it’s too much water on her own, so she lets Sophie enhance her

Maybe it’s because it’s Sophie, and Linh would do anything for Sophie, but Sophie’s grip on her hand keeps the enhancement from doing what Linh fears it might do, and Linh realizes she can do this

Sophie tells Keefe what Linh says aloud, despite Linh usually being just fine to talk for herself—the flood is too loud for anyone to hear Linh’s quiet voice

As Linh presses back against the water and makes it do what she wishes, the roaring water in her ears becomes something it has never been before—a calming, clarifying noise; and something inside her clicks

She is not less powerful or damaged or a liability because she is hard of hearing; the water does not control her. The water cannot take anything away from her. The water DID not take anything away from her, because Linh is not lesser without an ability to hear. She is a whole elf, with or without hearing, and she is a powerful elf. She saved an entire city because even if she can hear nothing else, she can hear the water, and the water is hers to control

Linh never hides her signing after that, and speaks louder and with more confidence than before.

She is never afraid of water again.

i hc that Linh is either deaf, or partially deaf bc water damaged her ears when she flooded Atlantis/Ravagog, and when she lost control as a kid. Also the road of water in her ears is sometimes just so *loud* it’s hard to hear other things. Her and Tam know some form of sign language, it def helped in Exillium as a form of two way communication. they’re trying to teach essential phrases/words to the others. thoughts? -t1sb

hoh Linh Song is such a spicy take i love this, and I love the angst this offers.

Like, hhhhhh yes like the water just being so LOUD right there and she can't get rid of it

or, better yet, the rest of the world is just silent, and she can only hear water through her ears hakjfshkasjdksj, and it's the only thing that's loud at all, and when it rains it's the only thing she hears.

In Exilium, of course, she had to figure out how to work around her inability to hear, and like hell they were going to get her hearing aids or something. She hasn't heard Tam's voice in years, has seen him sign things to her, but that's not the same. She hasn't heard music in years, either. She'd heard it, before, and now it's just missing. Sound is just... missing.

So, I love this headcanon. Thank you for sharing it!!!

but, one question on the technicals, if there's water in her ears, wouldn't she just be able to maneuver it out via hydrokinesis? I've always headcanonned Linh to not only be able to maneuver water outside of herself but inside of herself, which means she could blood bend like a pro, and also, if she ever choked on water or tea or something, she'd be able to literally just move it around inside of herself. So, if the water is in her ears, wouldn't she be able to bend it out via hydrokinesis?

Linh was everywhere.

Not in the physical sense, of course, but here, standing under the Panakes in a sweeping purple ball gown, she was all that truly existed to Sophie at this moment.

Beautiful, strikingly poised with her hands clasped behind her back, and looking like something out of a dating sim, Linh was life, laughter, and love all at once, in perfect harmony with all six elements, even shadowflux, as she opened her perfect mouth and began to sing.

At first, Sophie was not sure of the tune- it sounded like something soft and gentle- but eventually she recognized it as a song from her childhood in the Forbidden Cities.

A rather smarmy pop song, but coming out of Linh’s mouth, it was an angel’s melody, and Sophie began to realize why her last name was Song as Linh kept singing, this time more clearly, and Sophie remembered some of the lyrics:

I have died every day waiting for you

Darling, don’t be afraid,

I have loved you for a thousand years

I’ll love you for a thousand more

And all along, I believed I would find you…

And then, Sophie got a strong urge to run to her and kiss her until the end of time.

But when she got closer, the landscape suddenly became bathed in blood, and Linh’s song gradually became quieter, and more mournful, until it was naught but a sorrowful, near-silent whisper, nothing more.

It escalated almost too fast for Sophie to process. She tried to grab Linh’s hand, but as she reached, the ground beneath Linh opened up, and the girl with the silver-tipped hair gave Sophie an alarmed look as she plunged into the darkness below.

It wasn’t very deep,and Sophie could see that Linh had fallen into a seemingly bottomless cavern of water, but instead of trying to get out, Linh simply floated there, the expression on her face having changed from fear to pure betrayal, looking up at Sophie, watching her silently as her silver-blue eyes pierced Sophie’s heart, staring deep into her deepest secrets as Linh sank to the bottom, submissively, quietly.

The silver tips of her hair hung limply around her neck.

Like a halo.

Like a noose.

Sophie tried to scream, but nothing came out, and her silent pleas fell upon deaf ears as she watched her soulmate’s face slowly contort and turn blue from the very element she had mastered.

And with that, Sophie Elizabeth Foster awoke with a start in the dark, buried in the heavy blankets of her and Linh’s bed, the latter with her arms wrapped around Sophie’s stomach, her own pressed into the small of Sophie’s back, the two of them two spoons that fit together like puzzle pieces.

Sophie pressed a hand to her face in the darkness and noticed she had been sweating. Plus, her eyes were a little watery. It took her a moment, but she was finally able to correctly identify the scene she had just witnessed as not real, as a simple nightmare.

Nightmare.

That word alone gave Sophie chills, but she had sworn off sedatives long ago, and besides, when they had gotten married, she’d assumed Linh’s warmth was the only sedative she needed.

Evidently she had been wrong.

But she refused to show the echo that had never quite left that she was weak enough to pass up real dreams for flowery images of glittery pineapples in tutus.

Still, though, this one had felt much too real, so she rolled over and gently nudged Linh, who eventually raised tired eyes to her.

“Sophie? What’s-” She yawned. “-What’s wrong? It must be 3 AM.”

“Linh, I’m really sorry for this, but-”

“Another nightmare?”

Sophie managed a smile. Linh knew her so well. “Yeah. It-it was kind of terrifying. I just… I don’t know why I woke you up. I’m sorry.”

Linh placed a hand on Sophie’s shoulder. “Don’t you dare apologize. You know that I’ll always be there to help. It was in our wedding vows, remember?”

“How could I forget?” It was true. Their vows had been unique ones. Sophie had loved saying them, though.

Linh smiled- a warm, genuine, reassuring smile that momentarily made Sophie forget all her worries.

But the dark feeling was back in another second with a vengeance.

“It’s okay,” Linh said, wrapping her arms around her wife again. “Look. Just breathe and watch the water,” she said, creating a small ball of water in the space between them and shifting it into different forms (first a heart, then a ball, then multiple shapes). Sophie forced her tired brain to comply, and within a few minutes, her breathing had slowed down and she was thinking more clearly.

“There. Better now?” Linh asked gently.

Sophie’s only response was to pull her partner into a soft kiss. After they broke away, Sophie grabbed Linh’s hand and murmured “I love you.”

She thought she heard Linh’s response, but she couldn’t quite make it out as she drifted off to sleep once again, her dreams of Silveny and Greyfell and Linh and Havenfield no longer plagued by darkness, death, or fear.

She thought she heard Amy’s voice, too. But perhaps it was simply an echo from other, more complicated times.
