Which Side Are You On? (remix by Rebel Diaz, dead prez, Rakaa Iriscience)
Lyrics:
[Intro: Pete Seeger] Which side are you on, boy? Which side are you on? Which side are you on, boy? Which side are you on?
[Verse 1: G1] See before I draw the line, I gotta welcome you close To all the folks who knew Obama sold the people a hoax Gave the money to suckas while our community's still poor Withdrew the troops but started another war Colonized and terrorized and created an oil crisis So they could make a killin' on food and gas prices Prisons is fillin', they tryna lock up the future Militarize borders and control of computers While the stupid bumping music that ain't healthy for the shawties Povertize the schools and policeman in the hallways Can't be dormant, I've awoken, rise up, be ready Brought the family with us and we hold the machete
[Verse 2: M-1] Ridin' the fence, ridin' the fence Too many people be ridin' the fence Yeah you say you're ready for war but are you convinced? I'm not convinced If you're a writer, freedom fighter, crime exciter, then let's do this We can make one big united middle finger to the U.S Gimme the bravest and the truest, fuck the hippest and the coolest We're gonna spark this revolution and cross this off our to-do list Put your foot down if you look down on this criminal system Put your book down and get shook down like my niggas in prison Don't be condemning and condoning they actions in one sentence Now keep in mind, you decide Is you a patriot or a menace to society? So riot or sit by quietly But don't pull out your flag and try to say you gon' ride with me You flip-flopping like hip-hop, I don't get locked in that trick box Get got like Big and Pac, shit's got to stop "I am the people, not the pig," I repeat after Fred So please blow my brains out if I ever forget
[Verse 3: stic.man] I'm with the independent thinkers, I'm down with the movers and the shakers And the ex-Henny drinkers, the non-smokers The health advocates, the non-voters The young bloods in the hood trainin' like soldiers I'm on the side of the tracks with the hood gardens With the little child that don't color inside the margins I don't ride the fence, I cultivate my strength 'Cause if it ain't about power, it don't make sense I've been down with Boogie Down since BDP and Brown Pride And black power make RBG a OG An OG told me choose your battles wisely In the struggle, don't forget about your children and your wifey If you don't see me on the podium, preachin' it Every day, I hope my every action is teaching it 'Cause revolution is a process, it's not a speech or a panel Don't bite off more than you can handle
[Chorus: Pete Seeger & RodStarz] Which side are you on, boy? Which side are you on? Which side are you on, boy? Which side are you on? Chi City, Palastina, Venezuela Which side are you on, boy? Which side are you on? Which side are you on, boy? To South Bronx baby! Which side are you on?
[Verse 4: RodStarz] Ay, I still rock hard like slingshots in Palestina Con todos los estudiantes por educación gratuita I'm with workers uprising and the right to unionize We ain't crossed the border, so you better legalize I'm with la Penã del Bronx, I'm still with Victor Toro 'Cause gentrification is pollutin' my borough Sold bro never, South Bronx forever Decolonize the block, make your neighborhood better I ain't down with the rich, I'm more Richie Perez Don't talk to grand juries or cooperate with feds I'm with students, doctors, janitors, teachers We need living wages but they don't believe us Manida, Baretto, Spofford, Hunts Point My point, my hood I love, we join, forces Forming RDAC-BX Taking over buildings, Rebel Diaz for the children
[Verse 5: Rakaa Iriscience] Politics the sickness, streets express symptoms Caught up with a quickness, big business pimps 'em Scholars play the simpleton, fools play with wisdom Who will stand and fight back, who will play the victim? Trials and tribulations, here's your generations Stolen history and outsourced innovation Babel tower fell, tribes are at war The battle story not represented in the score The game's fixed, most of the faces and names switched Credit stolen for art, science, religion, language Technology, philosophy, and the strangest They paid in Haitian for the knowledge of the ancients Power in words, actions, guns swords Ain't Paris, Brown Berets, young lords, pick a side One sickness, one cure, one love One blood, one world, one war
[Chorus: Pete Seeger] Which side are you on? Which side are you on? Which side are you on? Which side are you on?
[Outro: Pete Seeger] Come all of you good workers Good news to you I'll tell Of how the good ol' union Has come in here to dwell

Dead Prez - Let’s Get Free
This is probably the first true blue hip hop album that I fell in love with. When I moved to America at 19, Dead Prez was the first concert I went to! This album and Dead Prez in general has always had a special place in my heart, but it’s been a good long while since I’ve listened to it! On this relisten, i have to admit, I still REALLY like this record. Yeah some of the lyrics didn’t age terrifically or are a little cringe, but they all come from the same place of political revolution and social and racial equality. This is a radical fucking album with some really awesome Spanish style guitar beats, loads of awesome lo fi and hi fi production, Great use of synths and 808s, and on top of that the lyrics and flow do actually go sooooo fucking hard. So glad I gave this thing a relisten. Just embracing the sentimentality and letting stic.man and M-1 educate me.

Kwanzaa music
...is very hard to come across.
There are a few albums out on the major music streaming sites. But I'll admit, nothing really worth talking about.
I think my problem with most Kwanzaa music is that all too often, it sounds like Holiday Music, or it sounds so traditional that it's too hard to really get into.
So instead of trying to find Kwanzaa music, I went through the music I already like, music I was already raised on, and tried to identify what gives me an overall Kwanzaa vibe.
Honestly, I don't expect everyone to like it, or for the playlist to get popular. There's only 15 songs on it. But it's as close as I can get to finding music that really captures the essence of Kwanzaa, at least to me.
For people that don't use Spotify, here's the list. It's arranged in no particular order because I'm not very good at that...
1. Zanset Nou Yo by Boukman Eksperyans
2. Worth His Weight in Gold by Steel Pulse
3. African by Peter Tosh
4. Every Ghetto by Talib Kweli
5. Radio Freq by Dead Prez
6. I'll Be There by the Jackson 5
7. Celebration by Kool & The Gang
8. Exodus by Bob Marley and the Wailers
9. Sikiliza Kwa Wahenga by Michael Abels (it's the song from Get Out...ik, ik, but literally look up the lyrics)
10. MY POWER by Nija
11. Where I'm From by Diggable Planets
12. Pacifics by Diggable Planets
13. Have Some Love by Childish Gambino
14. Africa by Boukan Ginen
15. Master Blaster (Jammin') by Stevie Wonder
16. Stand Tall by Childish Gambino

Truly growing tired of people being so media illiterate they have to like actually over analyze every piece of media cause they actually aren’t « smart » enough to just…accept something as « art » for what it is…including the time it was made…not to excuse anything but like Rocky Horror Picture Show was a counter culture, shocking, « disgusting » piece of media…ironically during the same overly puritanical time that seems to be coming back. Again, cause most audiences just sit and STARE and accept whatever they see, they go with the mainstream opinion and then go on to find something else to consume. How that era of Musical Theater were angry, horny responses to the restriction of heteronormative, evangelical ideology and queer phobia…
Whether it’s Jesus Christ Super Star, HAIR, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Little Shop of Horrors…like even when you watch it how can people miss the OBVIOUS cultural commentary and fuck you??? EVEN GREASE KINDA!!! Omfg Frank n Furter IS/WAS/WILL ALWAYS BE so quintessential to my unapologetic queerness. Random but I literally want a song played at my funeral to be I’m Going Home…if at that point you don’t get Frank N Furter…get the fuck out the room!!!
Respectfully why do people need to problematize everything old nowadays??? Answer: the height of PSEUDO intellectualism. People feel late to the intelligence game (cause kids WERE left behind.) They feel late to the critic/discourse culture that really is DEAD. Swear to god, I’ll die for my terrible, ugly, problematic, angry, homosexual, hyper sexual, crazy ass media. If you can’t hang, drop off….
EDIT: AND LET ME ADD TOO THAT MY STRAIGHT (hmmm I’m rethinking a lot) WHITE DAD BORN IN 1963 WHOS OPENLY FAVE PREZS ARE NIXON AND TRUMP…STAY WITH ME!!! STAY WITH ME!!! A MAN LIKE THIS SAT ME DOWN AT LIKE 6 AND MADE ME WATCH THIS SHIT!!! I SAY ALL THAT TO SAY…a lot of these criticisms of older media literally just seem like tryna almost appropriate an assumed response of the time…when everyone kinda ate it up…lol
Just saw a video like "um actually rocky horror isn't good queer representation because frank sexually assaults janet" girl he kills and eats people. It's called the rocky HORROR picture show not the rocky cute gay rep tw t-slur picture show

Reverse Unpopular Opinion: your favorite music genre
I think this ask game is supposed to be me saying good things about stuff i otherwise dislike but I'm happy to talk about music if thats what you want anon.
My favorite named genre is probably hiphop. good hiphop to me feels driven, something that a lot of other music lacks to me. love songs are great, and Im a big fan of certain melancholic styles, but theres nothing quite like listening to music born out of a struggle for something better. Its deeply real and relatable but it also doesn't feel like a pity party for cishet people like a lot of pop songs tend to feel like for me. I'm also a big fan of the more organic instrumentation, not that I dont like synth music, that can be great, but what I hate in music is when its sterile. Of course the specifics depend on the song and the artist but people like Dead Prez and Ren consistently pour so much emotion into their music that resonates particularly strongly with me, they're not afraid to sound "messy" or imperfect. Thats something shared by a lot of music I like, another genre I find lovely is breakcore and I think that "messiness" is a big part of why. I do actually have a favorite unnamed genre, though maybe theres a name I don't know of. this answer is already pretty long so I'll just say I like when people take classical instruments and then introduce the messiness and/or emotion i talked about above. Blending classical and modern styles is heaven to me when done right, unfortunately I don't know many artists that do it and I don't know a name for the genre, one of the better examples I can give is this song. There is also a fair bit of music in this "style" by Japanese artists like Susumu Hirasawa
