i cant find the post that talks about it, but ive definitely talked about it before - i still think that the de:pp fallen angels could easily be read as a disability metaphor, especially if you look at the more bureaucratic, cubicle-esque capitalistic interpretation of the divine order....

especially that bit in s2e9/10(?) about "squeezing the last bit of labor out of your damaged body". the fact that the angels hide the fallen angels away from the public eye in a literal Prison Orb. the fact that more often than not one becomes "fallen" by suffering a physical injury.... the absolute power of the angels and the divine order as a whole relies on the idea that the angels are flawless, that their will is pure and right in every imaginable way, and that their ministerings will make the world whole and keep everything in check - therefore, fallen angels are an unacceptable margin... they show that angels aren't infallable, so they might as well not exist (unless we find a way to make use of them)

it could just be me. but i think theres some merit to it. i have a lot of thoughts about what little crumbs we see in the show about angels and their business and doings

fox rambles about his de:pp au for an hour (WILL INCLUDE S2 SPOILERS)

right. the ghost pug au. note some might be out of character because I just really needed this au to work.

this au is mainly tem focused, with some courtney and pugsley and crumbs of barney and norma. with logs and badyah being Irrelevant

up until the s1 finale everything is the same. Until after tem leaves. where he comes back because oops he's been disowned, and while I don't think it's possible I need this, tem has his magic. Gone.

thus he ends up coming back to the park as a permanent resident. he takes the form of a ghostly pug (what he looked like in driver's seat) because he finds it more comfy after being in pugsleys body for so long.

he has various opinions on and by the rest of the cast. norma and barney think he's. Bewildering. but norma Does enjoy having the prince of demons at her job because like. cmon that's prime podcast shit.

Courtney and pugsley though...

they're a lot more. Important.

tem likes to think him and Courtney are friends. but courtney is still spiteful he didn't let then go "home" (we all know what that home actually was) so they have a sibling dynamic until eat the parents where they clear it up in that argument, where they chill out. still sibling dynamic though

Pugsley... oh he is conflicted for a Long time. the dude possessing him just lives with him now. but he comes around and the two become Inseparable.

general episode tidbits

during s2s opening courtney and tem are just playing fuckin go fish before fingers shows up(courtney immediately bolts leaving an annoyed tem to follow)

fingers has beef with tem too, because he's a very big issue between pugsley being the watcher.

during trials of barney tem and norma are watching the match and he tries to tell her about as. and fails because norma waves him off because they got into a minor argument earlier and she wants to figure this out herself.

tem has a very awkward experience during sweet 1600. but when the watcher shows up tem jumps in front of zagan and gets blasted.

Pugsley and courtney are rightfully pissed when they realize. but fingers denies any involvement and that he'll be out soon.

He isn't.

regardless everything leads up to the other side and going up. where pugsley has two reasons for going with fingers. the revival of barney and. That fingers said he'd release tem if pugsley went with him.

going up is. About the same. but with the addition of tem being released with the other three. everything stays about the same up to pugsleys sacrifice. tem is Distraught.

the timeskip goes the same. expect tem has moved from sleeping in the same room as barney and pugsley to the same room as courtney. who's reluctantly told tem about them being a fallen angel. so when that scene plays with the fake halo, tem barks(because he picked up being doglike from his time in pugsley) to alert courtney about someone entering, before following norma down, following her to the last scene, where he bows and apologizes for his past acts and that he's not asking to be undisowned, but that his ex family will help him and norma take vengeance on the angels.

Review Everything 27 - Dead End: Paranormal Park

For the love of God can hosting sites PLEASE stop canceling shit before it has a chance to have an actual end?!

Like, come on, this isn’t even a “possibly the end”, it’s just very clearly a show that meant to have a third season it didn’t get. The show’s creator has said the story will continue via the books, so at least we’re getting crumbs [not saying books aren’t as good as cartoons but a story having to switch media, particularly unplanned, to get itself told is usually an unsatisfying way to wrap things up, at least to me].

On to the actual review: I really only have two complaints about the actual show itself, one that matters a little and one that matters not at all. The one that matters a little is that Norma was a pretty mean character when she was first introduced, which I feel is a pretty common and pretty unfair way to portray Autistic people in media. However she kind of gets over that as the show goes and and she learns to open up to her friends. The one that matters not at all is that I hate the Human nose designs in the show. It broke immersion for me at least twice an episode. XD

I feel like this is on e of those shows that someone made and then went, “Look, this is for YOU.” DE:PP centers around two of my most favorite special interests, the Paranormal and Theme parks. Even a bit of “pop culture understanding of the Bible” sprinkled in there for fun.

Lots of nice, smooth, frame by frame animation throughout, really saving the budget for important scenes without scrimping on the moment to moment stuff. Other than the noses the character designs are all really great. One good example is Courtney, the first time Angles were mentioned in the second season I was like, “Oh that’s why her horns are curved and also hollow, they’re meant to be a ring, like a halo.” She’s not a demon she’s a fallen angel which people often think are the same thing, this makes sense, I love this, good design, good character setup and payoff.

Also this magnificent beast is one of my favorite animated designs I’ve seen this year.

Of course watching children’s media is “guessing the end before the end" on easy mode, but I did see all the major twists for the second season coming long before they happened. That’s never been an issue for me since it’s kinda just how I process media so I don’t really know what it’s like to watch stuff without that happening. To me it’s a sign of a story well told, it means the plot is making sense and that payoffs are set up correctly.

Loved seeing some Trans rep, some Bi rep, some gay rep. I also liked that Norma had to deal with the person she had a crush on being straight and not interested in her. Some cool character dynamics there, not something I’ve seen in a show that I can recall.

The pacing only really dipped once, the first episode of the second season felt squished, like they had too much to fit in to the run time. Probably because they did, they had a hell of a lot to both wrap up from the first “demons are the  Humans’ problem” arc to the second “angles are everyone’s problem” arc.

I am really quite sad it got canceled, and don’t understand this trend at all. Were the ratings that bad? The views? Netflix claims it was a “cost cutting measure” but like, does that mean it wasn’t making money, or? Who the fuck knows. I’ll just have to hope the graphic novels are as good as the series, that they do write an ending for the show, and be content with those unless and until some other company picks the show up for a third season.

In Summary: Even if it wasn’t geared to a lot of my own special interests I would have liked the show, but with those added, I love it. If you haven’t seen the two seasons I’d recommend going and watching, I bet it’s super bingeable now that both parts are available. 

Overall: 8/10

Pael moodboard for anon! Sorry this took so long lmao, I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted to do for this. I ended up having a gray/black and white kind of theme, just because I wanted some continuity. Pael and the angels are so interesting to me, and I'm very excited to see how this system is further explored in future seasons! thanks for the ask <3
