Saint Aebbe Cut Off Her Nose to Spite Her Face
If you’ve ever heard the saying “cut off your nose to spite your face,” have you ever wondered where it came from? Legend has it that Saint Aebbe, also known as Saint Ebba or Æbbe the Younger, was a pious woman who disfigured her face to protect her chastity from invading Vikings in the 9th century, giving birth to this famous saying in the process.
This bizarre English idiom is still in use even today, though its modern-day meaning has different connotations to the original. These days it is used to describe a self-destructive act or overreaction, usually motivated by anger or revenge, and whose ultimate consequence is to do more harm to oneself rather than the offending party.
Apparently, a group of Vikings, led by children of Ragnar Lothbrok, arrived on the shores of Scotland around 870, and ended up burning and sacking Coldingham. When Aebbe the Younger, the Abbess of Coldingham Priory on the southeast coast of Scotland, discovered they had arrived, she cut off her own nose in a desperate bid to avoid being raped by the invaders.
She was also said to have convinced the other nuns to cut off their noses. The sight encountered by the Vikings must have been truly hideous. Nevertheless, while they escaped forcible violation, their actions still irked their assailants who continued to burn down the convent. The nuns were killed in the flames. Their purity had been preserved but they ultimately came to an untimely demise. In some accounts, the day of their martyrdom is given as the 23rd of August.
These events were first recorded in Chronica Majora by the Benedictine monk Matthew Paris (circa 1200 to 1259), written over 300 years after the events actually took place. They also made an appearance within the Flores Historiarum , though it has remained impossible to prove, or disprove, these accounts for lack of archival evidence. It’s also impossible to know if this was truly the origin of the saying.
While it sounds like a truly horrific turn of events, nose mutilation was actually a pretty common form of punishment and torture throughout ancient world. Known as a rhinectomy, the removal of the nose was a type of corporal punishment in ancient Egypt, whereby the noses of certain criminals were cut off as a permanent sign of their crimes and they were then banished to Rhinocolura. There are also accounts from the Persian Empire, ancient Greece, medieval Europe and pre-Columbian America.
According to Plutarch’s De Exilio, King Lysimachus of Thrace cut off the nose and ears of a subject who insulted his wife. He also gouged out his eyes to ensure the message was received loud and clear. Heracles in Thebes was given the nickname Rhinokoloustes, meaning “the nose-docker,” since he reportedly had the noses removed of all messengers sent by Orchomenos to demand tribute. Even the Old Testament recommended rhinectomies in the case of prostitution.

Lente Atelier

Fugazi, De Bogaard, Geel, Belgium 9/22/90 (FLS #0263) & Fugazi, Netwerk, Aalst, Belgium 9/23/90 (FLS #0264)
In the fall of 1990, Fugazi toured Europe and the United Kingdom, performing an incredible number of 60 shows in just over 2 months.
This included two gigs the band played back to back in Belgium, i.e. in Geel (province of Antwerp) and Aalst (province of Oost-Vlaanderen) for a modest number (between 400 and 600) of fortunate fuckers. There’s a time and place for everything, time and place… It would be the second time Fugazi visited my home country, having played just one show here as early as 1988.
For some reason, I haven’t really been paying much attention to these 1990 shows, and have favorited the Fugazi recordings from their 1995 performances in the cities of Leuven and Gent, as well as the one from their 1999 concert in Brussels.
These 1990 recordings probably slipped under my radar because I was just 14 years old at the time and would only get to know their work later on, I think 1991 or 1992, finally getting to see the band play live on the 1995 Red Medicine tour and 1999 End Hits tour.
Now back to the 1990 recordings. Between these two shows, Fugazi played the 1990 Repeater album (released in April) as well as the Margin Walker EP in their entirety. Four different songs are taken off Steady Diet of Nothing (yet to be released in July 1991), and four different staples off the 7 Songs debut EP make the cut as well. The gig in Geel plays out a bit longer, offering 19 songs, whereas the one in Aalst showcases some 16 live tracks.
Both recordings sound really good overall to me, even though Joe’s bass is somewhat low in the mix for the most part. The interplay is powerful and engaging nevertheless, straight-forward, with few mistakes dotted around, which makes these performances stick. The band is in a good mood on both occasions, the audience appreciative yet tentative, not putting up much of a hassle.
Note the running gag on the first night in Geel, as Guy references the UFO Dictator song by Tampax, and the band appears to tag Runaway Return and Two Beats Off with a couple of lines and chords from this song, which was originally released as early as 1979 as part of a split 7″ with Hitler SS and which currently is listed to sell for $549 and up. Discogs offers some more details related to this obscure Italian band:
“Italian prime-mover punk band formed in 1978 in Pordenone by Ado and Willy Gibson, originally as BumPamBingTilt, changed to Tampax in Summer. They released the very first Italian punk 7" single, a split with their fellows Hitler SS, and were also among the founders of The Great Complotto, an independent record label and countercultural organization.
Broke up in the Autumn 1979, back from London where they moved in August together with Hitler SS and where both bands played the 1st September the famous ‘Cartoon Concert’ under the Aklam bridge in Portobello Road.
Atfer the split Ado and Gibson formed their own electronic/experimental projects, 001011011100…Cancer and Musique Mecanique, and were involved in the production of many local new wave and punk bands.
Reformed in 1984, in 1988 Tampax released their first Album, “Sorry Not Tonight”, an LP featuring recordings between 1978-1986; during the 1990s, Tampax had a fan club that requested a photo of your genitals as compulsory subscription fee.”

Zondag 18 april – The Antilibrary: Why Unread Books Are The Most Important is een post op de blog fs (Farnam Street) van de wonderlijke figuur Shane Parrish (wiens motto is ‘helping you master the best of what other people have already figured out’).
“The writer Umberto Eco belongs to that small class of scholars who are encyclopedic, insightful, and nondull. He is the owner of a large personal library (containing thirty thousand books), and separates visitors into two categories: those who react with “Wow! Signore, professore dottore Eco, what a library you have ! How many of these books have you read?” and the others - a very small minority - who get the point that a private library is not an ego-boosting appendage but a research tool. Read books are far less valuable than unread ones. The library should contain as much of what you don’t know as your financial means, mortgage rates and the currently tight real-estate market allows you to put there. You will accumulate more knowledge and more books as you grow older, and the growing number of unread books on the shelves will look at you menancingly. Indeed, the more you know, the larger the rows of unread books. Let us call this collection of unread books an antilibrary.”

Solange Addresses Rumors That She Was Cheating With A White Man, But Folks Still Have Questions
Solange Knowles is speaking out for the first time after announcing she and her husband Alan Ferguson ended their marriage. However, fans still have questions. Find out what she said and more inside…
On Friday, Solange Knowles had the Internet in a tizzy when she revealed she and her husband Alan Ferguson had called it quits after 11 years together and nearly 5 years of marriage. The breakup news comes days before they were set to celebrate their 5th wedding anniversary (November 16th).
In her Instagram post, she mentioned their split occurred earlier this year, however, she didn’t say exactly when. Around the same time she posted the uncoupling announcement, a video of Solo all touchy feely with a mystery man hit the ‘Net and instantly went viral.
Then, the rumors started. Folks on Twitter started accusing Solo of cheating on her husband with “a white man.”
Solange has a White Man?

In July, pictures of “The Cranes In The Sky” singer heading to the Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris with a white man popped up. You can see them here.
Apparently, the Internet thinks he’s the man she cheated on her husband with. So, the Grammy Award winner responded.
Turns out, it's her former co-manager, John Bogaard.
“Yo ty [thank you] @onvaction for being the best co-manager for 5 years. Sorry, the internetsss are so unkind n b lying go back to enjoying ya vacation," she captioned a picture of her with her former manager.
What's interesting is the fact she makes NO mention of the viral video of her with the mystery man (that was allegedly captured back in August):

And there's more...
Back in May, Solo was caught on IG stories grinding all up on a man who wasn't her husband. The video has been taken off social media, but the screenshots are still floating around.
Do y'all see what we see?
