Haven't done any DDR fanart in months, so I decided to get back to it, fittingly during Pride Month, so I drew Konsento:01 and Oshare-Zukin from DDR 1stMIX as models in an LGBT Pride-themed fake DDR magazine cover.

In here, I headcanon both Konsento and Zukin as a gay and lesbian, respectively, and I wanted their flag's colors reflected on their designs:

I added a fur scarf on Konsento that has the colors on the gay flag, and a leather jacket meant to resemble his model on the PS1 games where there was texture erroring on his arms, coming off as black with a few of his white and pink stripes

Zukin already has orange on her design, so what I did was replace her green plaid skirt with a layered fringe skirt that has the colors on the lower half of the lesbian flag.

Character artwork for Dance! Dance! Dance!, a dance-based rhythm game for PS1 by Konami, released within 3 months of DDR 1st Mix. Like Vib-Ribbon, the game supported custom music through swapping CDs.

Dinner rations having been held early at 5pm-6pm for the entire building, the next hour was spent furiously setting up the tables that had already been previously set out for goodies. Every room off the Atrium and the Atrium itself are all strung with the Christmas lights and battery operated fairy lights, streamers hung from and across everything they could be, and balloons not only covering the floor to just bounce around as they please, but taped to the walls in random scattered patterns to fill the space. In the middle of the Atrium in the place where the Christmas tree had just been taken down stand a chair next to the piano which had been rolled out of the common room. The muffled sounds of music are already filtering out from seemingly every space, and the colour changing lights from The W's dance floor are spilling out from the open double doors. By 7pm, everything is set up and ready for the guests. Activities include:

December 1st, 2024 - Arcaea, SDVX IV, DDR EXTREME, ITG

a strange title indeed... you've seen SDVX EG on here often, and maybe even SDVX VW if you go all the way back, but SDVX IV? from before i even got into rhythm games? but how? ...well, it's (mostly) a secret that i'm not sure i can discuss on this account... but as part of an anniversary party, i found a cab that ran the game and got to set some scores on it!!! but first! a word from our sponsor: SUPER AMBULANCE [FTR-10] EX+ on the ride to the place in question :]

...between leaving for and arriving to the place, that's thankfully the only score i got as i was just trying to deplete my world mode stamina. but as soon as i was dropped off in seattle and got myself something to eat (could feel myself fainting in the moment... not very good gaming condition), i hopped on the train to the Certain Spot:tm: and met with the beautiful holy cab... the SDVX IV cab!!!! ...and so, although it was mostly just stuff i'd already played in SDVX EG, it was the thrill of the classic theming and experience (and 60hz-ness ig?) that was the main appeal... i even got a volforce class up pop-up!!! (though i'm not sure how volforce works in this version, so i'm not sure if it means anything despite getting it in a single set) ...and i also got a silly little fail on Kita Saitama 2000 [EXH-18]... maybe i'll get it on SDVX EG when i play it?

while getting to play SDVX IV for the very first time was incredible, it wasn't the sole (or even main) reason i was here... no, i was actually here for the DANCE GAMES the place mainly took pride in! and continuing from SDVX IV the trend of rhythm game versions older than my interest in them, here's a rhythm game version that's even older than ME!!! that's right baybee, it's DDR EXTREME!!!! the first and only time i'd ever played on an EXTREME cab was a super ugly and busted cab where almost every background animation was missing... but this one, on the contrary, was a full-fledged DDR EXTREME PRO setup with everything intact (and with great pads too!) . struggled getting used to Vivid and all the background effects, but i managed to close out my set on the cab with a GFC on CARTOON HEROES (Speedy Mix) [HVY-9]... followed by another GFC on the signature Extra Stage song, The legend of MAX [HVY-10]!!! (or [ESP-15] if we're talking modern levels www)

what an incredible experience!! and yet somehow, it wasn't even the main reason i was here either!!! no, the main reason i was here was to play... IN THE GROOVE BAYBEE!!!! sure, i have my own pad at home, but it's not a whole ass awesomesauce arcade pad like the one here is... and the display isn't as good as this one either!!! if anything, this is the prime ITG experience... a bit complicated and basic, sure, but in terms of gameplay, i think the scores speak for themselves...

...okay yeah it was incredible . haven't even had as good of a dance game experience on DDR at Round 1 as i had on this cab, it's just THAT GOOD!!! and while i didn't stick around for long (guess why . it's homework . again . it's always homework), i deeply cherished the time and scores i got on this game session despite how absolutely annihilated and exhausted i was from playing iL-Artifact [13] specifically (oh my GOD there's so many streams i was gasping for breath afterwards), followed by an okay GFC on Odo [11] immediately afterward!!! (the GFC was impressive as the chart was littered with footswitches, but then again i coulda had better acc... ah well, maybe next time!!!)

Found a Korean ddr clone called Dance Diet Revolution that. OK so it's a conversion kit for Pump It Up cabinets but there's also a karaoke feature and a home PC port that, from the one piece of gameplay footage I found, just wholesale steals DDR 1st Mix music. I also found a British PC DDR clone that looks like lost media but it also looks kind of bad so maybe that's for the best

NEW MONTH, NEW ARCADE SESSION, LET'S GO!!!

testing out this strat of warming up on IIDX first, then unleashing the acc on DDR, and today it actually went pretty well ! (though i didn't get to play too much DDR due to lines n' stuff)

but it's not just DDR that was cool of course, this IIDX session was SICK!! very nice clears, including the H-CLEAR on Super Freak SPH-9, regular clear on B4U(BEMANI FOR YOU MIX), and then... while not pictured here for the time being... MY FIRST EVER 10 CLEAR ON VAJRA SPH-10!!!!!!!!

moving into DDR, my scores alone were mostly focused on clearing (aside from that osumatsu-san OP PFC), but then when having to play with someone else, i KILLED IT with the upscores . even got my new highest 14 as a sightread PFC somehow!!

I got my very own DDR cabinet recently! It was sitting in a local arcade going unused after its hard drive died (last May!), and after a solid half a year of nagging they finally agreed to sell it to me (this past January!) and I’ve been slowly fixing it up into a working thing ever since. A couple weeks ago I finally got it up and running and I’ve been playing on it regularly! Here are a few pictures and a bunch of words about it.

The machine is a Japanese 1st-gen cabinet (it might have originally come with 3rd Mix?) that was at some point upgraded to the US Supernova 1. The pads were in terrible shape when I got it (I’m still clearing out and re-assembling Player 2′s side, as you can see) but the base cabinet is in pretty good condition aside from a few minor quibbles! For the price I paid for it to get a J-cab, I think I got a pretty good deal.

(For the unaware, Japanese cabinets are generally higher-quality than the Korean cabinets produced around the same time, which are known for having slightly lower-quality parts and not being properly electrically grounded in some places. I don’t know if one kind is any harder to come by than the other, but the easiest way to tell the two apart is at the back; Japanese cabinets have one maintenance door, and Korean cabinets have two.)

Since the original board isn’t working, I pulled out the main guts so the machine could run Stepmania. The theme is the SM5 port of Simply Love, with a custom-rearranged song select screen. There are currently around 1200 songs on the machine (the vast majority of which are DDR songs; 1st Mix through 2014, plus the Mario Mix songs! c:)

The extra guts are sitting in a box in my room right now. A Python2 with a dead hard drive, a US-model EXT-IO board, and memory card readers that may or may not work. I’m still undecided between selling them or trying to fix the hard drive and having SN1 around to pop in and out for nostalgia. (This happens to be the same machine I played on to get back into rhythm games around a year and a half ago, and the PS2 version of Supernova was the only thing standing between me and obesity in middle school. I have a lot of fond memories of it.)

I’m still running the original CRT monitor. I want to replace it some day. Feeding a PC feed to it is a huge pain. watch in 240p for best quality

The PC running it is a cheapo refurbished desktop that I got online just for running this game. It’s connected to the machine’s inputs through a couple of USB adapters (a J-Pac for input and video, and a LumenAR/glorified PacDrive for lights) and wired up to a router flashed to act as a client bridge to the main router upstairs. The network connection lets me access the machine’s hard drive from my laptop, which is great for adding songs and getting screenshots from the machine.

Rhythm Game Song of the Week - THE BALD HEADS - SKA a go go

Welcome, everyone, to another Rhythm Game Song of the Week. This week, DJ’s will surf through the mountains.

The most notable trait about this song is the ending. A lot of songs in Bemani will put their hardest sections right at the end, and SKA a go go is practically the codifier for this. There is nothing in beatmania 2nd mix quite like it: a drumroll on the two white keys, and a few cymbals and hits on the rightmost keys. The version on the soundtrack is a measure longer; Konami apparently had some restraint on the ending when they put it in the game.

DOCTOR S, aka DJ Simon, made a “~Perfect Mix~” for SKA a go go in beatmania completeMIX 2. Ken Matsumoto, whose only other credits appear to be synthesizer programming for Mr.Children albums, would do a ~SKACORE MIX~ for beatmania CORE REMIX. This version has entirely different lyrics about “getting the funk out of here”. It was called the “get the funk out mix” on the soundtrack, dispelling any belief that the singer is shouting anything else in particular. No Highs Off U situation here!

Both versions appeared as Hyper and EX charts, respectively, in SKA a go go’s short appearance in pop’n music. It also had a very brief appearance in beatmania IIDX from 1st to 2nd, featuring an Another chart with a longer ending than even the soundtrack. Because it was on substream, it appeared in DDR CLUB VERSiON. While no version of the song is in any current Bemani game, ディッシュウォッシャー◎彡おいわちゃん (Dish washer Oiwa-chan) in IIDX SINOBUZ pays homage to its ending.
