@threadstories (E)quality is a day long symposium taking place at @ncad_dublin presented by @ncad_appliedmaterials_taa tomorrow Friday 15th November. If you are in Dublin or near I recommend you head along. Speakers will muse and question the role of making through textile processes and the unique materiality this has to communicate. These are ideas I ponder and wrestle with constantly in the studio, as a visual artist that grounds my process in making, in the hands-on, in traditional craft processes, engaging in the dark arts of intuitively creating art is in constant opposition to my training in Fine Art, which often leads me to question and muse on my practice....., then say f*ck it ...I’m suiting myself! Crocheted Masks by threadstories Question How We Portray Ourselves Online

Irish visual artist Threadstories crafts wearable textile masks that are often full-coverage, obscuring her face with layers of multi-colored yarn. The works are made with traditional techniques, and inspired by everything from the art of basketweaving to Francis Bacon‘s distorted figural paintings. Each work begins with a crocheted baklava which the artist uses as a base to attach each segment of material.

Conceptually, the masks question how we portray ourselves online and how this is influenced by a rapid decrease in personal privacy. “The masks deny the viewer the full story of who the sitter is, echoing the curated or false personas we portray and view online daily,” threadstories tells Colossal. “The masks are mutations of our private and public selves.”

I am delighted to announce that this piece has been chosen for exhibit as part of the 2020 Sculpture in Context, venue the gallery in the Botanic gardens.   Creative Island

Showcase Ireland 2015 opens at the RDS on Sunday the 18th of January.Over the past five years at Edel MacBride we have exhibited our beautiful wares in the Creative Island zone of the show (strictly trade event folks).

Having spent numerous earlier years in the more industrial side of the show (hall e), a return to handcrafted clothing heralded joining forces with the Crafts Council of Ireland (now the  rebranded Design Crafts Council of Ireland), in the area called ‘Creative island’. Here are some highlights of the show for us.

  Made in Ireland

With criteria to exhibit in the Creative Island being strictly ‘Made in Ireland’ and by selected craft and design led business only, this proved a fitting location.

As we are not exhibiting this year, for a cocktail of reasons, so here are a few highlights from Showcase Ireland 2011 – 2014.

Good luck to everyone at this years event, especially those crafts people who like us are making with skill here in Ireland.

Thank you to our retailers (who bought and paid!) and to the DCCOI team for the opportunity of exhibiting at Showcase, to Enterprise Ireland and especially their wonderful Japanese translator.

                      The Drive for dress…

The gold dress that was renamed ‘the Drive for dress’ at the Collins Barracks Jan 2010 picture Robbie Reynolds model: Faith Barnett

There may have been a layer of crisp white snow on the ground at Dublin’s historic Collins barracks on the morning of the shoot, but Faith Barnett looks stunning in our handmade gold dress and belt with a Juvi design necklace. This hand loomed dress in Irish linen with Italian lurex thread became an iconic piece of Edel occasion wear. It was lovingly and individually recreated for clients from California to Convoy, some to famous to mention.

    Silver celebrations

While we celebrated 25 years of happy knitting at Edel MacBride recently, silver is never far from Edel’s workshop. It’s a life long love. This dress was quickly snapped by a regular customer who also got it in black and in a longer version and in their 7th decade knows that style has no age. Boy does she look good in it too and knows it! A much loved possession. Showcase 2103 ?

  A need for Tweed

                    We are from Donegal, tweed is what we breathe and love. We invented it and that is that. Nothing warms your world like it, here sitting writing this we is clothed in it!!! yet it must be handled with care, design care we mean (it can take a beating) we have more to come in 2015.

  When Eve became Adam

  Before the 2013 image of Faye Dinsmore in our iconic hand knit Aran, was this simple catalogue shot. Edel called it Eve her reasoning being that it would be the first of another generation of passionately made aran sweaters. It was fitted, short and damn sexy. Hand knitted in Donegal just like your mama taught you. While it showed at the 2013 Showcase fashion show it wasn’t an overnight success. A chance post on our facebook page starting enquiries from down under and up over literally! And the surprise was the amount of guys wanting their own Eve? And so came spec 2 which was Adam. Now remember who was first!

The Showcase fashion show 2014 by SRM pr was a glorious example of just how we are a nation that can knit! While there was beautiful clothing and weaving, the overall power of the show was plainly knit. While not all shown at Showcase is Irish made (the Creative Island zone being an exception), their is a great return to bringing production back onshore, let’s get behind that. The dress centre front is by West End knitwear in Kildare, a family with a long established history in knitwear manufacturing as are other companies represented here like Irelands eye Knitwear and Fisherman out of Ireland. Rossan knitwear and Rathlin knitwear represent some of most ethically produced hand looms (100% made in Ireland) and the ‘Studio Donegal’ family weave us tweed dreams in the hills of Donegal.

While we will miss the camaraderie with our neighbours at the show, in particular John hannah and his energetic daughters, our road in the woods has diverged this year and sure a change is as good as a rest!
