tuesday again halloween problems (10/31/2023)
not quite an "oops all friends" edition but this edition heavily advised by viewers like you. thank you!
listening
mcr's blood, for seasonal reasons. spotify
Father Finlee by Spence Hood and Justin Ray Stringer is my new favorite song, a spooky prison? folk ballad? elements of the work song and dirge about it. rounds are underutilized in modern music imo.
Finlee played that guard like a fiddle Turned his own fears into a honing missile “Father can you save my soul…” “Well, first you gotta bring me a little C4...”
usually when a song intrigues me like this i try to find interviews or breakdowns of samples or something, but i am coming up flat empty. @dying-suffering-french-stalkers tasting notes: "Volga Boatmen, maybe, but by way of like...1950s/60s Disney choruses? Like Grim Grinning Ghosts?" spotify

reading
somewhat horrifying but unsurprising article about how companies who want (or want to keep) governments contracts can buy out entire DC Metro stations' adspaces. via @andmaybegayer i think?
The Pentagon station, a prime target for reaching DOD staffers, was one of a kind. The Pentagon is the most expensive station to “dominate” according to Outfront Media data which I obtained, even though it has substantially fewer riders than some of the others. Advertising to the 665,786 commuters estimated to visit the Pentagon station in a four week period costs $198,000 (about 30 cents per commuter), before fees. Yet in Gallery Place-Chinatown, a station in downtown DC farther away from government buildings, it costs only $120,000 to reach more than three times as many people (5 cents per commuter).
it is difficult to stress how uncooperative miss mackintosh was during this book's photoshoot. this is genuinely the best one.

i did not enjoy and did not finish Roshani Chokshi's 2018 queer magical intrigue and heist caper in belle epoque france, first in a trilogy. i think there is a mismatch between concept and execution here. i originally had a rather long paragraph about how i'd be interested in a non-new-adult book from her, but after checking her website and seeing that she mostly writes midde-grade and YA, and classifies this book as YA (which doesn't really make sense to me, i think everyone in the core crew can legally drink and i think what i read from this book fits better in New Adult) and has a forthcoming adult book i am not interested in, i think she is simply not an author for me. i reevauated this book with YA in mind, but i think teens deserve books with sophisticated writing and good execution too!
this had a really killer hook but the worldbuilding comes very in thick and fast during the first quarter of the book i read, and felt a little dorling kindersley (here is an eye of horus! on a chinese compass! with a sumerian cipher!). the magical system chokshi uses is novel in its heavy reliance on physical objects and like, countermeasures and counterspells? we get little hints of it as a global system, and it feels very analogous to The Power Of The Computer. a lot of it is based on creation of various physical objects, some of it is mind-based, there are the equivalent of magical stone faraday cages. the macguffin is like. what if a major internet exchange was an object you could carry around.
this magic system is so interesting it makes it disappointing and difficult to break down the distinction between "i don't think the soft-skill worldbuilding through connections and loyalties of characters is that well executed in these first hundred pages" and "hate this specific literary device". we are dropped into a heist at a magical auction where the many magical representatives are attending and rapidly rush through a lineup. this would be a really fun movie or other visual setpiece with intricate costuming choices, but it's hard to show and not tell a complex system of combined familial/cultural/nation-state houses of magic with backstabbing politics when you are rushing through a very time-limited heist. i know that it's the first in a trilogy, but the sheer number of factions and names is very large for a ~400 page trilogy entry. if this were a fucking doorstopper of a series i would have more faith that all will be eventually explained and i will eventually be able to distinguish them all, but i truly don't think she has the pages to do that.
the book's most frequent reviewer praise is that most of the core (but still! very wide! there are so many goddamn names!) cast are colonized or otherwise oppressed people, and i must give this book props for including a bisexual man in the ragtag crew. i read up to the first hundred pages to the first twist, and when the person who joins them at the twist has a voice that is not distinct from the existing gang’s, who are already not distinct from each other, i put the book down. a brief excerpt that does not serve this point very well but serves the following paragraph's point
Tumblr media
this book felt like someone describing their dnd campaign to me. people on goodreads do love this book so i'm sure it does eventually deliver on the heist and found family aspects, but it's simply not for me.
bought this here in houston over the summer ( i think) not sure where

watching
House on Haunted Hill (1959, Castle). this was so charming!!!
"it’s a pity you didn’t know when you started playing murder…that i was playing too." vincent price truly is that bitch. his scenes with his fourth wife in the film, carol ohmart, are electric. they hate each other so much. they've tried to kill each other so many times. she laughs when he reminds her how she poisoned him with arsenic. the sex has got to be insane.
this is a public domain movie that's embedded in its own wikipedia page, lol, but there are various restorations of varying quality floating around.
youtube
the exterior shots of the "old, ugly, moldering house" are the frank lloyd wright ennis house in LA, which made me shriek bc it is a famously light/airy/sundrenched building. (exterior wikipedia, interiors here).
thank u @americanwwhore for logging it on letterboxd recently and making me go "oh hey i should watch that too"

“Furbys were banned from government offices because those dummies in DC thought they were artificially intelligent, can you believe that silliness? LOL”
They were banned because they would “learn” and repeat phrases said around them repeatedly. It was an advertised feature of the toy. People routinely “taught” their furbys to swear or say other vulgar things for laughs. That created the possibility of a stupid toy repeating bits of classified information as part of it’s gimmick.
No one thought they were “AI”, they were just aware that it was basically a shitty listening device.

Hi to all -
FBI
After the mad shooter, James Hodgkinson, fired 136 rounds at a group of republican members of congress who were doing a charity baseball game, seriously wounding several, including Steve Sacilise, back in 2017, the FBI tried to peddle this as 'suicide by cop'. With a new director at the FBI, this narrative has been challenged and changed. The shooter was a big Bernie supporter, who was angry that Bernie was not doing well in the campaigns. Firing all those rounds from his position was not a suicidal act by a deranged man, especially since there were no uniformed cops anywhere in sight. There were a couple of DC police, undercover, who took a very active part in ending this shootout. As republicans have demanded, this event is now classified as an 'act of domestic terrorism'.
Speaking of cops.....Remember Maxine Waters, the Mouth that Roared? She went to the trial of policeman Derek Chauvin, in order to incite violence. Of course, Nancy and Chucky threatened anyone who dared to criticise her for this action. Maxine went in the company of two Secret Service Agents, and two Capitol Police Officers (well outside of her jurisdiction, and theirs), and further demanded not only a police escort to and from her insurrection, but also demanded two additional air marshals on her flight. To provide this high level of protection for a person with no business attending the trial, and who came only to cause trouble, those air marshals had to be pulled from other 'high risk' flights. See, it is okay to support police, if they protect democrats who want to enslave you, just not okay to support those who try to keep your neighborhoods safe. By the way, in this trial, the full video of what happened was not permitted to be shown. Seems George was screaming 'I can't breathe' for more than nine minutes before he was on the ground. And George is a big guy - well over six feet. He was screaming about being put into the police car, and literally kicked his way out. But, that little bit of information does not support the narrative. Better to destroy a man's career, and burn down the peasants' neighborhood, perhaps even killing some of those peasants, than to actually question the narrative.
China
They have achieved a milestone. They have landed a Rover of their own on Mars. No other nation on earth has done anything like that. China wants us to know that they are world class, and highly skilled. This was called the Tianwen-1 Mission, and the Rover was named Zhurong after a Chinese God of Fire.
California
A tree trimmer, Ryan Scott Blinston, 37, was arrested by a SWAT team as he attacked a man with intent to murder him. Seems Ryan had returned to the homes of people who contracted his company to trim trees, and cut their throats. Several of his victims were elderly. The one who lived was 50. Ryan is being treated as a serial killer. California seems to grow a lot of serial killers. When I lived there, years ago, we had the Zodiac Killer, and one of his unsolved attacks happened just down the block from where I lived.
Israel
The rocket attacks continue, more than 2000 so far. So, the air strikes by Israel are also continuing. Israel used a clever trick to lure Hamas fighters to their caves and trenches, and then bombed them to death. In every war, media have been co opted into spreading propaganda and misinformation, often without the media being aware that they were tricked. The latest attack also dropped a high rise building in Gaza, which was both a media center (the AP had offices there) as well as a command center for Hamas. Lots of 'how dare you' talk from the liberal press. Hey, folks, if you sleep with dogs, you will get fleas.
Militia
Okay, the Second Amendment describes 'a well regulated militia' as being a vital interest of the nation. For generations, democrats have been struggling with the definition of that, in their ongoing efforts to disarm the peasants. Lets ride on the Way Back Machine and see why that term was used.
The Founders distrusted a standing army. After all, they had been occupied for many years by the British, and had a long and bloody war against a standing army. And, the British routinely confiscated food, and their homes, and anything else they needed for support of that army. The "Founders" saw all citizens as a civilian soldier army, ready to be called up at a moment's notice, to defend the nation from another attack. In fact, the British did try again, and we had the War of 1812. So, the term 'militia' was not some group of National Guard troops, but included all able bodied males. Imagine if all able bodied males today showed up, armed and practiced, to face down a tyrant - foreign or domestic? This is the greatest fear of democrats, which is why we have troops around the capitol to protect them from all others.
CNN
Gosh, with no Trump to bash nightly, and daily, no one seems to be watching them anymore. They went from an average of 2.1 million viewers, to about 800,000 today. Bet that means that their advertising revenues are also down by 65%. Someone is going to have to figure out how to cut costs, or find a new gig.
Nazi Germany
When things began to turn against Hitler and his war, he needed some way to keep the peasants in line. And, also, his own troops, who were increasingly unwilling to die for the glory of the Fuhrer. That is when the infamous Nazi Salute became a mandatory thing for everyone, soldiers and civilians alike. Kind of like 'mandatory' vaccines and masks, or perhaps something we haven't even seen yet. But, as the power slips away, you will certainly see devices to maintain control enforced on everyone.

Tumblr media
I’ve gotten quite a few asks lately asking to make a tutorial on how to roleplay on jcink, so I’m going to break it down as easily as I can! If you have any other tutorials that you would like me to do, just send me an ask! If you need me to clarify something, just let me know!
PART i: FINDING A SITE
Okay, so the first thing that you’ll probably do is find a site in order to join it. There are a lot of other great directories out there and I know that a lot of people search through resource sites. A lot of these directories have separate categories or tags which you can use to find just the site that you’re looking for. Here are a few examples:
@jcinknetwork - navigation page
@jcinkadverts - navigation page
wecode - advertising section
That’s about easy enough! If you’re looking to make a site and want to know if other people might be interested (ex: a real life site based in Washington, D.C, a post potter era adult era site, a fantasy site completely made up), you can usually find an “interest check” tag or section in order to ask.
PART ii: FORUM BASICS
The majority of sites have a similar layout, so I’m just going to be describing what the general layout is.
Each forum has different categories, which is the main section. Keep in mind that all skins will usually look different in colors, minor structures, and so on, but the overall design for most skins is generally quite similar.
Tumblr media
In the image above, it’s the part that says “wecode”. Beneath each category is a forum. In the image above, they are important reads, site announcements, and moderation.
Tumblr media
If you click on the forum (we’re going to click on announcements), you’ll see what’s in the picture above (though without all the cool colorful boxes).
PiNK - That’s a subforum.
BLUE - This is just going to tell you what forum it’s in, but technically it’s called a maintitle (though that isn’t crucial knowledge).
GREEN - This is a topic. You can usually see who posted it, the description of the topic, the last person who posted in it and when, and how many views and replies it has.
Now, most sites are set up in a similar way. Here’s a basic rundown of how the forums are structured:
[ Site Name Here ] - Important Reads (member groups, rules, lore, etc) - Announcements (activity checks, announcements) - Moderation / Codes (site codes, topic moderation)
[ Registering ] - Registry (application code, where you post your application) - Claims (canon lists, face claims, other site claims)
[ Development ] - Shippers (where shippers are sorted, usually don’t post here yourself. plot with other characters here!) - Classifieds (requests) - Development (personal character development, post moodboards, aesthetics, etc here) - Communication (quick threads that usually take the form of notes, texts, calls, etc)
[ Location (Hogwarts / Washington, D.C. / DOWNTOWN) ] - The number of location boards varies per site. HP-wise, it might be set between Hogwarts, Hogsmeade, and London. If you’re in DC based site, it might be split between DC, Maryland, and Virginia. The locations listed under the location boards are usually located within the location title.
[ Out of Character ] - Usually just advertising and archives
PART III: ROLEPLAY BASICS
There are a few terms that you should know before you get started roleplaying on jcink because there are times when it might be a bit confusing for newbies, but it’s generally quite user friendly.
SHIPPER - (Dossier, Plotter, Plot Page) These are used to plot between characters on the site (though the majority of sites now also allow plotting on Discord channels). There’s often a code you can use on the site to post your shipper as most sites generally like it to be uniform or at least to be using their codes. You fill in the shipper which usually includes a platonic, antagonistic, and romantic section for a short general description. Images are also included in these! If you want to plot with someone, you first post in their shipper. They will usually reply in your shipper, so keep an eye on that!
WANTED AD - (Classifieds, Requests) If you want to request people or a certain plot, this is the place to do it. If you aren’t sure what kind of character you want to make, check this section to see if anyone is looking for anyone.
PROFILE - You can usually click on your name on a site and it will take you to your profile. To access an editing panel, you can usually find the cog in the topbar or someone where on the page and click on edit profile info on the sidebar in order to edit your profile. A lot of sites include multiple images and player or character information on the profile page, so be sure to fill those out.
APPLICATION - Although getting more rare nowadays, applications are where you apply to join a site. Follow the rules outlined in the application code topic for what your title and description should look like and post a new topic in usually one of two different forums: complete, unfinished. Usually there’s a third forum entitled “pending” for character applications that just need a bit more work.
SHIPPER APP - Sometimes sites use shipper apps. Instead of just being an application, it’s a shipper as well! Two birds with one stone, eh?
PROFILE APP - When it comes to profile apps, you have to go to your profile and edit it. There’s usually a large textbox for the actual freeform part of the application, though there’s also a lot of just general information to fill out. Completely a profile app usually also requires people to post their shipper before they join.
MEMBER GROUP - These are groups that your characters are sorted into. These vary depending on the site. A classic example is this: a Harry Potter site is usually separated into Slytherin, Hufflepuff, Gryffindor, and Ravenclaw. You just pick which group your character goes into. By default, you’ll probably be a “member” or something similar.
PART IV: JOINING A SITE
The first thing that you want to do once you find a site that you like is read the rules. This usually tells you how you’re supposed to register your account. What you register your account as is what everyone else sees, so if you register as Harry J. Potter (with the capitalization), that’s what everyone will see. Most of the time, you just register with your character’s first and last name in proper caps, but this is where reading the rules comes in. Some sites prefer all uppercase, all lowercase, middle initials, and some sites even require you to first register an alias account instead of a character account. Just be sure to read the rules!!!
The next step is to reserve your faces or characters. Most sites only allow one or two reserves at a time, though be sure to read just to make sure. Usually on a site, there’s a code listed as the “reserve code” that you can use. If the face or character is already taken, you can’t use them.
The next step is creating your shipper or application or editing your profile. It depends on the kind of application (see PART iii).
Then, you wait. I know, it totally sucks to wait, but it’s what you gotta do. If you’re pended, you’ll get a PM on the site from the staff letting them know what you missed. If you’re accepted, well get on plotting!
PART V: PLOTTING + THREADING
Visit the shipper forum and plot with other characters. This is totally informal so you can fangirl and sob all you want to. There is usually a code to do this, so be sure to look around before you do so (sometimes it’s just a button). Once you find one that you mesh with or come up with a plot that you absolutely have to do, let the other person know that you want to do a thread with them. If they agree, either start the thread (and let them know that you’ll do it) or ask if they would be willing to start it. Determine the location (ex: Draco and Pansy in Hogsmeade at the Three Broomsticks - I (Draco) would post in the Hogsmeade category in the Three Broomsticks forum.) You would title it anything you want and the description usually tags the person. Example:
Title: ; start a fight Description: pansy parkinson / alias of other person
Then, of course, send the other person a link to the thread you guys are doing. When you guys think that your thread is done, just request to have it archived in the moderation forum.
PART VI: OTHER THINGS
Now, if you want to keep track of all of the threads you’re doing or have all of your character’s shipper pages in one thread, you can go to development and create something called a tracker. You can edit this page however you want to include all of the threads that you’re character or characters are involved in so you can access them quickly.
Don’t forget to join your site’s Discord as well to interact with other players!
QUESTIONS? COMMENTS? SUGGESTIONS?
If I missed something (which, tbh, I probably have) or if you need me to clarify something, don’t hesitate to send me an ask. If you want it answered privately, please let me know.
