But oh, the bloom by sillyfairygarden <- sorry it’s not platonic but it is desertduo and aough it wouldn’t be me if I didn’t recommend this!! Staring at you with puppy eyes please go and read it. Just about anything written by sillyfairygarden is worth reading, but this has a special place in my heart for sure

you came at the brink of the end of by world by anonymous/louiessleeplessnights <- I’m not even exaggerating it’s about the sixth time I’m rereading this fic. I’ve genuinely downloaded it to read offline. I just love it. It’s desertduo as well, and angst and sadness and tragedy, amongst laughter. I think I fall in love with Boatem a little more every time I go to reread it. I can and would write an essay on why everyone should read it (although! Beware the explicit rating, that’s only relevant for the last 2 chapters of which there are over 20)

Bread and Butterflies by anonymous <- this was recommended by an incredible incredible author (whose desertduo fic I’ll also recommend because aoughhh) and I read it for the first time today! Tragic, desertduo, post 3rd life…. Yeahhhh I almost cried reading this. <3 definitely recommend

Like literally more tragic. Aough. Warning here that Grian is absolutely Going Through It and to heed the ao3 tags (eating disorders, suicide etc). The hunger au is brainrot for sure. Extremely slightly obsessed with the implications of TIES not being in 3rd Life-

Like literally ALL of them were in Dogwarts at one point or another, and I feel like the fact that there were so many of them was kinda what elevated Dogwarts to be as powerful as it was. So either people who weren't part of Dogwarts initially were a part of it in dbhc or they weren't NEARLY as much of a threat to the other factions as they were in canon.

The Crastle Alliance as well involved Impulse and Tango, so they're also cut in half in dbhc (which kinda makes me ponder a world in which Dogwarts and the Crastle fused into a single faction 👀)

Jimmy wouldn't have lost his life in Dare to Flare but honestly he'd've prolly lost it anyways to something else so that's not too much of a difference XD

There's probably also more butterfly effect stuff that I've missed by not watching TIES' povs but I am very interested in seeing what you have in mind (if you ever choose to expand on it in the future). I'm very curious how the clock plays into it...

(Also as an added ponderance, I can't help but wonder if Etho Hopper Clocks have another name in this universe since Etho wasn't alive to make them (or, for the funny route, if Etho was named after the clock instead of the other way around XD)

okay i understand that we're going for comedy but i cant help myself here

so double life is the third life series, and in the canon of the life series, dl is the first time joel has gotten a partner and has not been alone (i could go on and on about how that affects his relationship with etho but we don't have the time for that)

but in dbhc, he gets what is essentially a robot as a partner, devoid of human affection and intimacies (at least for now), after 3rd life where he had no team, and last life, where his team was broken on the second episode

hes starting to wonder if he's not meant to have anyone after all

WELL!!!!! An in-depth analysis on Joel is really not what i was expecting here but you uh! you make an excellent point. that's um. yeah okay that's fine, i'm fine about that !!! <me when i lie

(rest assured, when joel finds out how jealous Bdubs is of him being partnered with etho, he goes from annoyed to delighted and finds many a way to have fun with Etho despite Etho not really being... himself. He at least has a good time because Etho is more or less there to agree with his plans and go along with whatever he wants to do DSFLKGJSDF)

OVERVIEW

Dbhc, or the Detroit Become Hermitcraft AU, is an au that started as a joke and very quickly stopped being a joke LKFJGDG It’s called Detroit Become Hermitcraft, but not really because it has anything to do with the base game DBH– really, I only yoinked the android mechanics and inserted them into the minecraft-based world of hermitcraft. It’s an au that starts in Hermitcraft Season 8 (aka, many of the first androids were built for the beginning of s8 in this au), meaning that the seasons prior in this au do not technically have those hermits as part of their history. The Life Series are canon to this au, but like earlier hermitcraft seasons, 3rd Life is missing all of the android hermits due to it having taken place prior to HC Season 8.

do you have any plans to expand the dbh au outside of hermitcraft? just curious

Yes and no! Dbhc essentially is the normal plot of hermitcraft + friends (+life series, whatever) , except a big handful of them (the androids) were introduced and s8 and s9 of hermitcraft. Since Xisuma (with Doc’s help) is the one who made most of the androids, the androids are limited to hermitcraft characters (aka, sausage or jimmy or any other characters will not be androids). Skizz I think is the only exception, since he was made by Impulse+Doc+Mumbo+Tango+Etho! And he wasn’t technically a hermit at the time that info came out in the au. Though maybe in dbhc skizz WAS made for hermitcraft— not sure on those details yet!

However, since this au pretty much follows normal hermitcraft timeline with s8/s9 onwards (although some androids were introduced/made in s9, and were not present in s8), everyone else (empires, life series, etc) are still part of this world! and the hermits interact with them like they would in normal canon :] which is why we have the life series and everything! This DOES mean that events previous to s8– including 3rd life + previous hermitcraft seasons follow a pretty different timeline, as a lot of those characters would not be there yet. Makes for some fun plot rearranging! But I don’t have all of that figured out yet :]

Hopefully that helps clear it up a bit! I’ve had a few people ask if other non-hermits were going to be androids, so hopefully this answers that too :3

Something I've been wondering- how do player deaths work in dbhc? Like is it a permadeath au, or does respawn work similarly to how it does in minecraft? Bit of both? I know there was the real threat of etho shutting down as a result of his injuries when he first deviated, but if respawn isn't a thing then that begs the question of how the life system works when they're on 3rd life etc

HI good questions :D I actually rambled a bit about “damage’’ and “respawn” mechanics in This Ask Answer! (ALSO THANK YOU I’VE BEEN HAVING LOTS OF FUN WITH THEM!!)

I will add on though: i mention in that post that a “Shut Down” is most similar to a permanent death, where the android goes offline due to permanent damage, injury, or loses the ability to function some way otherwise. The android won’t be able to boot up or come back online unless it’s fixed or repaired, and because of the androids’ programmed psychological responses to pain, shutting down feels the most like dying. So, even though they can be fixed, it’s unpleasant and scary at the very least. However, I’d also like to note an exception to this concept: It comes up once or twice in the base game(dbh), but I believe that an android can actually be briefly re-activated post initial shutdown. By triggering a start-up sequence, re-connecting crucial power cords, or forcing the system to try to come online, the android will likely boot up for anywhere between a few seconds and one minute before shutting down again (due to previously mentioned injury or inability to stay functioning). This is hardly a productive state, however: the android will likely be panicked, desperate, and flooded with error messages that makes it difficult for them to function beyond basic comprehension, and the more times this state is triggered, the less likely it is that the android will be able to turn on at all unless fully repaired. It’s kind of like trying to boot up a laptop that’s out of battery— the lights will come on, blink a few times, the monitor may briefly light up, but then the system will realize it’s out of power and shut down again.

So while it’s possible to get information or answers out of a shut-down android, there are very few circumstances where it could be considered justifiable or productive to try booting them up only to put them through a few more seconds of suffering.

wait last life being canon to dbhc au is so interesting. are androids a well known thing outside of hermitcraft? or is grian inviting multiple robot friends to his death game a little confusing for the non-hermits present

YEAH so it IS a bit confusing and that’s the reason I hesitated on getting into life series territory for this au at first, but I figured it wouldn’t be much different besides the non hermits meeting these guys for the first time through the life series. I know I haven’t planned specifics or anything, but I’m pretty sure all of the androids are deviant by the time 3rd life starts up anyway (subject to change I guess, but I do wanna keep all of the main/important plot stuff within hermitcraft).

Soooo yeah! basically the second thing— xisuma is still the one who designed/made all of the androids, so they’re hermitcraft-exclusive, but they’re still able to participate in the games and everything like normal!

“Hey, Cleo, help me hang this straight will ya?” Bdubs voice snapped her out of her thoughts. When she looked up, he was holding a golden clock aloft and blinking at her.

“I’m not sure how helpful I’ll be for that, but I’ll give it a go,” they joked, turning to the wall he was eyeing. “Where did you get that shiny thing?”

Bdubs puffed up proudly. “A treasured gift from Scar! Day one clock, I keep it in my pockets when I’m mining. So I can avoid the stupid phantoms. I’m just gonna make a nice hook for it here when I’m running around so I don’t lose it or somethin’.”

Cleo eyed it. A gift from Scar, huh? She was curious to know how Scar had gotten a hold of it in the first place, whether he had crafted it himself or if it had been some junk in a dungeon chest. The slowly shifting sky it depicted was strangely… alluring. And she wasn’t even into clocks like Bdubs was.

He clutched it close to his chest, breaking her line of sight. “Hey now, careful how you’re lookin’ at it. Treasured gift, remember?”

They quirked an eyebrow at him. “Don’t worry Bdubs, I don’t want your silly clock. Usually I just look up at the sky.”

He laughed and shook his head. “Yeah, yeah, whatever, just tell me if this is a good height -”
