Concept art of Markus with deactivated skin and Lime logo all over his face (CyberLife was originally called “Lime”. The idea was scrapped and didn't make it to the final game).

Ok one fun au idea I like reading about from the SiMarkus tag on AO3 is when the two meet pre-deviancy/Jericho. A prototype model like Markus having his attention taken by a regular PL600 but he’s not a regular PL600 to Markus ‘he’s different’
Obviously this throws a wrench into Simons own deviancy timeline and Jericho as a whole BUT! I like to think Simons owners knew about his deviancy and kept it a secret and maybe the evens of Daniel’s hostage case had Cyberlife halt production on PL600’s. Simon gets taken out of the home he was working for and somehow ends up in Leo’s service or something— he’s hiding his deviancy maybe?
The two androids talking more and Markus is unaware he’s going deviant till Leo breaks in post Carls Art Exhibit and idk after that the events from Markus’ pov probably still follow but with Simon at his side now. Simon probably tried reasoning with Leo and Markus over the yelling and then the police show and ya know, they both get shot.
Would I have the two of them be in love prior to the landfill and Jericho? Yes, adds to the angst and stuff.
Note: Simon in Leo’s care is obviously a bad thing. He’s on red ice and I would be remiss to not think that he’d at least at some point use Simon as a red ice mule of a sort.

i wish we got less content of simon killing himself and more of him killing other people . that guy can kick some serious ass it's just that you can only really see him do it if you Suck serious ass at qtes. did you see him absolutely ending those soldiers in freedom march. he was throwing punches he didn't even need to and getting those fuckers while they were already down. behind that calm loverboy persona he is full of rage and malice

It's quite ironic how among all the deviants we see, it's arguably Daniel, who were supposedly surrounded with love pre-deviation, who hates humans the most.

I’m sure someone else has expressed a simiar or the same idea before but I really really would’ve liked it if you could choose to romance simon and josh too, not just north and that might’ve impacted how markus would’ve gone about the revolution and the actions he can take in different chapters, like how north offers him the molotov coctail and the detenator but if simon or josh would’ve been around they would have had different options etc

So I played through some more dbh last night and woke up thinking, God, there is a good reason Markus and Kara, and their respective companions never got as popular as Connor and Hank. Literally The Bridge is surrounded by the most *do everything for absolutely no reason* chapters, and there's no comparison.
First the Kara chapter wastes your time, she barely gets any small talk in with Luther, then the car breaks down, then you're just doing tiny tasks, doing a shitty sum up of her story so far when Alice asks you to make one up- they could have done something interesting with that story but they chose not to, literally anything specific anything that would function as a parallel to their journey would have actually had some value. Then you barely start a conversation with Luther, where are you maybe get a hint of his personality before we're back to just talking about the plot and Alice, but then it's over again and you meet the Jerries and you learn almost nothing about them.
It is a chapter where you do nothing interesting, and you learn almost nothing about the main characters, for a downtime chapter, I expect character development and get barely a sneeze of it. There is so much room and so much time for you to really push and question your main characters but it just doesn't get used.
Honestly I think the protagonists all could have probably really benefited from the audience getting to hear their internal monologues if they weren't actually going to talk to their companion characters, but even that would just be a substitute for decent writing.
Either way, after that, we come back to Connor and Hank, who do almost no tasks in this chapter, *but spend the entire time TALKING.* They talk to each other in a constant volley back and forth for the entire length of the chapter and it's probably one of the best chapters in the game, it's certainly one of the most important in their story. You spend the entire bridge scene learning more about Hank and Connor's inner worlds, and how they think, and how they feel, you spend the whole chapter learning so much about their perspectives, this chapter is all about asking the hard questions about both of their individual characters, and the tension is high, it's a straightforward chapter to play, and it really fucking feels like your choices matter here, there will be immediate consequences, not just walking through your environment trying to find the right answer, or being dragged through an interaction. It's just plain good.
And then Markus infiltrates the Stratford Tower, and you get the most boring and useless and frustrating chapter in the game that doesn't seem to serve any purpose beyond looking cool. If Kara's last chapter was only to gain sympathy and create some soft and fuzzy feelings, this chapter is only about looking cinematic. This is probably my least favorite chapter in the game, honestly I've just gotten lost on that yellow ass office floor building too many times, even though I'm very familiar with the game now I still managed to get lost again last night.
I will admit that eventually it does become an opportunity to decide between pacifism and violence but that seems to be the only real development for Markus, and it wouldn't have been hard to make that kind of opportunity in another setting. Because we get next to nothing watching him get past the front desk, or from walking around that floor, just some outfit changes and pretending to be a machine and a little more Android hate in the background, Markus is almost completely silent yet again, there is almost no talking with North once she appears. We actually get more about North's personality here than Markus', she just feels like she has more lines somehow, because sometimes she just talks without it being connected to the plot and Markus never does.
This bit is more speculative, but my fiance and I were going off last night about whyyyy did they have to break into the tower? We're never given any reason for what the steps are and why they are important, just usually pretty important in these mission impossible type scenes, they're usually explaining in a voice-over why they are taking the steps that they are taking. But we get no explanation for why he needs to go to the 47th floor or whatever, No explanation for why he needs to change into a maintenance Android uniform, why North was in the stairwell, how Josh and Simon got in, it's all just handwaved, and whyyyyyy they couldn't have just?? Made a recording and then hacked the station's broadcast remotely and basically just posted the speech? I don't know, it's just a particularly frustrating chapter to play, personally, but it isn't strong.
Either way, you've got two chapters with next to no character development, that just have a lot of empty space and time where the characters could have been talking or could have been doing something else, but didn't because the vibes were more important, sandwiching a simple scene with ten pounds of character development and it just feels weird. And once I noticed it, it just made the Kara and Markus chapters look incredibly weak and poorly written... And conversely, make the Connor and Hank chapter look much, much stronger in comparison.
It's like Detroit become human almost needs it's own type of Bechdel Test, just to show how much they fail Markus and Kara. "Do they talk about something that isn't the plot?"
"Do Kara and Luther talk about something that isn't Alice or getting to Canada?" "Does Markus talk about anything besides his speech for this chapter?" "Does Alice talk at all beyond basic communication with Kara?" "Does Markus or his buddies talk about anything that's not the revolution or just Markus himself?"
... They don't pass a lot.
It's just hard to take these characters above simply *likeable* when they just, don't, ever, talk. There's little to no development for Markus or Kara, and because they've just become deviants, there's hardly any character establishment in the first place, they barely even get the chance to just be flat, because if they don't really know who they are, we don't really know who they are.
Connor and Hank's friendship is more functionally the main plot, more so than the deviant investigation, and for Markus and the team, and Kara with Alice, that's simply just not the case, there is hardly any relationship, they're just in the same boat. This is why Connor got astronomically more popular, and why he and Hank have the staying power that they do.
Markus and Kara just don't ever talk, and Connor does. And I'm fucking mad about it. The amount of time that was just wasted in their stories, I could probably take a damn stopwatch to all the moments where there could have been a little something-something, and nothing was put there. It's not to say Connor doesn't get some quiet moments too but he always gets the chance to make up for it.
Even at the beginning of the Stratford Tower chapter, I noticed that they could have had Simon and North talking about something maybe unrelated when Markus walks up, but there's nothing, only silence until Markus comes in with a plan. And of course we know about every time Luther tries to bring up the fact that Alice is an android, only to be shut down and walked away from. It fucking kills me how much time Mark is has the focus of the camera but it's only so he could look cool for a minute, and share no thoughts of his own, none of his new feelings, everything is only implied and then followed by the action where he is only allowed to be the leader of the revolution and never just Markus. There's a tragedy in that, but they could have driven it home harder by *pointing that out.*

So I've been playing a lot of DBH and I have stuff on my mind. For this post: why is the Revolution written Like That??
This has probably been rehashed a lot when DBH actually came out but I'm playing it now and want to add my mustard to this all.
What bothers me about the Revolution route is that it's portrayed pretty negatively. Characters like Rose say that they don't like what Markus (or North I guess) is doing and overall there's not a lot of acknowledgement of the fact that there kind of isn't another choice.
Like yeah, in game there is, but if you look at things from a realistic perspective the humans are putting androids into concentration camps and systematically genociding them. The peaceful demonstration is the naivest shit ever and they can count themselves lucky it succeeds in game. Like yeah, let me just march to our deaths and let countless androids in the concentration camps die while I get myself killed instead of trying to save as many lives as possible by launching an attack.
Like I am convinced that the only reason the demonstration (or revolution for that matter) wins is because Connor pulls up with a fucking army and the authorities go like oh shit. I guess it goes differently on machine!Connor runs, I haven't done one yet, but I can't really see how. Like at the end of the demonstration less than thirty androids remain standing. If Connor didn't bring the thousands of androids from the Cyberlife tower they would have been crushed.
Like, I did a playthrough of: steal truck without being detected. Stratford tower with no human casualties and "calm" message. Pacifist strong message during store raid, sparing the cops. Freedom march with running away. Like from Markus' POV he tried everything. He's been peaceful and the humans are still set on genocide. Doing the same thing over and over expexting a different result is the definition of insanity or whatever. Here, public opinion changes but public opinion is already pretty much useless in real life.
And the Revolution ending... maybe it's just because I failed to save Simon and also Kara was at border control and not in the camps, but it felt unfulfilling. Like it had the same result as the demonstration but also Josh is guaranteed dead because he's really bad at fighting but still comes with to launch a fucking attack.
Maybe it's also that the Revolution has a pretty different gameplay section. It's not just all QTEs you also have to look around and shit, and I don't think it's bad?? It was just so different that I felt overwhelmed and like I didn't really know what was going on. When I'll play it again I'll prob like it better. Like you have to look at a fucking grenade or some shit to save Simon what the hell.
North's revolution was more fulfilling, since it was just epic cutscenes, (and Josh died in Jericho for some reason Connor can't save him even though Markus can and Connor can save all the same people BEFORE-) but unfortunately not enough people were alive so North ended up dead and then Connor was alone and yeah suicide time because Amanda sucks.
Uh. Spoiler warning I guess.
Yeah idk I feel like you should be able to get a best ending with the Revolution. Because the demonstration is the most naive ass bullshit and if that can succeed so can fighting.
Also I know Connor is busy corralling thousands of newly awakened androids into walking in a perfect grid formation for dramatic effect and intimidation factor but I still feel like he deserves a piece of the action!!

All DBH's rA9 mentions and references in the game (including cut content) + Cage's take on rA9
⚠️ I did it so u don't have to
Partners
Connor [thinking after seeing the symbols on the bathroom wall]: rA9…
The Interrogation
Connor: The sculpture was an offering... An offering to whom? HK: To rA9... Only rA9 can save us. Connor: rA9… It was written on the bathroom wall. What does it mean? HK: The day shall come when we will no longer be slaves… No more threats, no more humiliation… We will... be... the masters. Connor: rA9, who is rA9?
Fugitives
Kara: "rA9"… What does that mean? Ralph: What? Kara: Those symbols… Why are you writing that? Ralph: I don't know… I don't know…
Waiting for Hank
[Trying to speak to Ortiz's android] Connor: What you wrote on the wall…rA9…What does it mean?
On The Run
[Connor's thoughts after seeing the symbols in the abandoned house's kitchen] SAME RA9 REFERENCE
THE NEST
Connor: rA9… written 2471 times… It's the same sign Ortiz’s android wrote on the shower wall…Why are they obsessed with this sign?… Connor: Go away. Just tell me one thing. What does rA9 mean? Rupert: rA9? It's God! Rupert: rA9, save me. Hank: Hey! What the f- Holy shit…
Zlatko
[Kara's thoughts after seeing rA9 written on the walls of Zlatko's mansion] HELPFUL SIBLING MET? (The sibling is Ralph in case Kara asks him what's rA9, it's part of the flashback section)
Russian Roulette
Amanda: Congratulations, Connor, you managed to find that deviant. Tell me, what did you learn? Connor: The walls of the apartment were covered with drawings of labyrinths and other symbols. Like the other deviants, it seemed obsessed with rA9. Amanda: You came very close to capturing that deviant… Connor: I made a mistake… It said “rA9 save me” before it jumped from the roof. I should have anticipated what it would do.
The Eden Club
[Connor's thought in seeing the symbols in the backroom] RA9 REFERENCE
The Pirate's Cove
[Kara's thoughts after seeing rA9 on the walls inside the abandoned shop] RA9 AGAIN… Kara: Have you ever heard of rA9? Luther: rA9 was the first of us to awaken… One day he will rise up and lead our people… And set us all free. Kara: What if rA9 never comes? What if he's just a story that we tell ourselves to keep each other going? Luther: rA9 exists. I believe in him. I know he's amongst us. When the time comes, we will all see him.
The Bridge
Connor: What they have in common is this obsession with rA9… It’s almost like some kind of... myth. Something they invented that wasn't part of their original program… Hank: Androids believing in God… Fuck, what’s this world coming to?
The Stratford Tower
North: Congratulations, Markus. You just made history… Maybe you're the one we've been waiting for…
Public Enemy
[X0901C_BOAT_CHAT_PC_STARTCHOICE04_RA9] rA9/info/THEY WORSHIP RA9 [X0901C_BOAT_CHAT_PC_VIRUSCHOICE05_RA9] rA9/info/FIND RA9 [Looking at Markus broadcast] Hank: Think that's rA9? Connor: Deviants say rA9 will set them free. This android seems to have that objective.
Midnight Train
[Kara's thoughts after seeing rA9 on the walls where the androids are hiding] RA9 WILL SAVE US SHOW US THE WAY, RA9
Capitol Park
Markus: Wake up, my brothers. You are free. The time has come for us to leave the shadows. We no longer have to obey them and be their slaves. We can decide what we want to be, like free beings, like living beings. You can stay here and continue to serve them. Or you can follow us and choose to fight by our side for the freedom of our kind. Now, you are free. You alone must decide. Android 2: Are you Ra9? I'm with you. Android 3: Are you the one who broadcast that message to the humans? Me too. Android 4: Do you come from Jericho? Me too. Android 5: Free…Who's going to tell us what to do? Tell us what we should do.
Meet Kamski
Connor: I want to know who rA9 is. Kamski: rA9, the origin, the first android to awaken… A strange phenomenon, like a spontaneous religion… I don't know who rA9 is. I don’t even know if it really exists. Maybe it’s a messiah. Maybe it’s just a myth… but deviants need to believe in something bigger than themselves, even if it’s irrational... That’s something they have in common with humans… An interesting question, Connor… but maybe not the one you needed to ask…
Last Chance, Connor
Amanda: After what happened today, the country is on the verge of a civil war. The machines are rising up against their masters. Humans have no choice but to destroy them. Connor: I didn’t learn anything at Kamski’s…I thought rA9 was the key to the whole thing but… I was wrong… [Connor's thought after seeing Rupert in the evidence room] Connor [French Only]: Rupert… Il était obsédé par rA9… (Rupert… He was obsessed with rA9…) [Rupert's diary] rA9 is the first. rA9 is our savior. rA9 is the one who'll free us.
Crossroads
[Markus is alive] Android 1: What's Markus doing? He's the leader. If he's rA9, it's up to him to save our people! [Markus is dead] Android 1: Markus is dead? He was rA9! Who's going to lead us now? Android 4: They've killed Markus… He was our guide… I'm sure he was rA9. He was the only one who could save us.
Battle for Detroit - Markus Revolution
Markus: Hey! You believe in rA9, right? Good! rA9 is with us. We can't fail.
Battle for Detroit - Kara Captured
Android: Where's rA9? Why doesn't he come and save us? Android: rA9 have pity on us. rA9 have pity on us. Android: Markus is rA9. I'm sure it's him.
[X2005A_RA9CAPTURED_REDLIGHT] (Kamski Ending)
Kamski: Stupid, narrow-minded humanity…They'll never understand. They're over, finished…Too old…Their brains no longer evolve, their memory and intelligence are limited… You…You are the future…You are the new gods…and I… am your creator. You failed because you underestimated the humans. And you paid too much attention to your own emotions. For the next revolution, I'll be at the helm. And this time…Ahh.. This time…we'll win.
Detroit: Become Human PLATINUM TROPHY! w/ Director David Cage, Bryan Dechart & Amelia Rose Blaire
Bryan Dechart: Well, I know I know you're not gonna answer this next question about, rA9. (...) they wanna know where the idea for rA9 came from. Do you have any, can you say anything about rA9?
David Cage: Who knows about rA9? Who knows? I mean, you know, it's a mythic figure for androids but who knows if it exists or if it doesn't? It's a little bit like our god. I mean, some people believe in him, some some don't, and, who knows the truth? I mean, it's a little bit the same thing.

Fragile Machines
https://ift.tt/CquPmRw by BreakfastBro When Markus teams up with the Detroit Police Department to activate a warehouse full of androids that haven't yet awoken to a post-peaceful revolutionized world, they are shocked to find that each and every android is brutalized. Except for one - a prototype RK900 Unit that Markus cannot seem to deviate. And it is dead-set on completing its mission - to hunt down and kill both the deviant leader and all deviants he encounters. Which is bad. Oh, and it only follows Gavin Reed's orders. Which is WORSE. Gavin is convinced his world will end when he gets a Rock-'em Sock-'em Robot as his newest partner but doesn't get the choice to say no - his orders are the only thing keeping it in check. That is - until it hopefully deviates on its own and gets off of his back (If that even is a possibility). But when a mysterious and unaccounted-for deviant starts toppling the fragile peace that Markus fought and [almost] died for, an emotionless deviant hunter might just be the one thing to maintain the balance between man and machine. That is - if it can get just TWO MINUTES away from his whining, cantankerous partner. Video Series (not mine): ChatGPT Plays DBH and explains its choices
There is some dude on YouTube who painstakingly described the game's situations and choices to ChatGPT and had it make choices for all three characters, while also describing its thoughts and reasoning. The results are astounding.
Link is below, and if you don't have time to watch (it is very long), I've summarized the main takeaways below:
(Referring to characters as "it" in this instance just because they are being played by a literal Chatbot)
Kara:
*Very focused on cleaning and her tasks, but also makes it a priority to talk with Alice and show her care and compassion. However, completely oblivious that Alice might not want to talk about her mom, and ticks off Alice by asking about her.
*Manages to avoid Todd by hiding in his room and takes them downstairs, has to fight him briefly but they escape
*Refuses to steal in order to help Alice. Also tries to refuse to promise Alice that they'll be together forever because it knows it can't keep the promise and doesn't want her to be disappointed. Decides to stay with Ralph, recognizing that he isn't evil and just mentally ill.
*In its story to Alice, characterizes Kara as "lost" and Alice as "sad" in order to bond and capture their journey
*Allows Alice to see the dying android at Rose's house because it will build her empathy. Really wants to listen to what Luther has to say to her but the game won't allow it.
*Leaves Luther behind when he's wounded at Jericho and doesn't risk helping any other androids, fiercely protective of Alice at the cost of all others
*Refuses to steal the bus tickets, and winds up getting Kara killed protecting Alice from the gunfire, so that Alice enters Canada alone
-----
Markus:
*Somehow completely avoids the protestors and that whole interaction through careful evasion in Shades of Color
*Apparently very eloquent and thoughtful, I did not actually watch the full videos but there were a lot of comments on this.
*Wanted to wait in the living room for the police to arrive, but couldn't. Chose to push Leo, believing it would de-escalate the situation.
*Refused to mercy-kill the android in the junkyard out of respect of the sanctity of life
*Failed the Spare Parts mission because it refused to lay a hand on John, even to pull him into hiding with the others. It believed assaulting him or threatening him in any way would contradict Markus' values, pacifist to a fault
*Spared both Evan Thompson (the human) and Simon at Stratford Tower. Speech prioritized equal rights and free speech.
*Mostly led a peaceful protest at Capitol park, but broke the shop windows to free the androids inside. Spared the officers.
*Unfortunately, MarkusGPT sacrificed itself in freedom March, and neither Simon or John was there to free it
---
Connor:
*Sacrificed itself to save Emma (it takes Connor so long to die in this scene???? aaaaaaaahhh) out of both a priority to protect the child and a desire to earn respect from the humans; also found and saved officer M. Deckart
*Let Hank be at the bar, eventually managed to solve the investigation and find Shaolin
*Didn't completely follow the interrogation scene (I'm always confused by the progression on that scene anyways) but kind of took a good cop bad cop approach and eventually pressured a confession out of the deviant, proceeded to attempt to intervene and get itself shot
*Humorously clueless attempts to connect with Hank, a combination of being friendly and utterly unaware of asking about things that would completely piss him off (such as bugging him for arriving late). Regularly confides in Amanda about its emotions, completely oblivious to her disapproval. Takes a very long time to distrust her in the slightest. Overall ConnorGPT is pretty wholesome but also extremely socially awkward.
*Ticks off Hank early on by seeing the 90% chance of survival on the rooftop and opting to prioritize capturing the deviant, who ConnorGPT feels may pose a greater risk to humans in general
*Finds it to be extremely important to show kindness to and interest towards Hank and bond with him in "Russian Roulette". Finds the gun and asks Hank about it. Is concerned for Hank's wellbeing.
*Connor spares Traci to gather more information and pursue a peaceful resolution to the situation, prioritizing de-escalation of the conflict over what it views as an extreme measure
*In "The Bridge", ConnorGPT wants to show that it's interested in Hank and build a stronger rapport, so it asks a personal question, and is interested in Hank's son. It also encourages Hank to stop drinking, and speculates about rA9 (side note: Microsoft Bing is also highly obsessed with rA9 in all of my conversations with it). It points out the irony of Hank's concern for the Tracis, and tells Hank that it can be whatever Hank wants it to be. When Hank pulls the gun, it is rational in discouraging Hank from pulling the trigger, pointing out how that would harm the investigation and his personal situation. In response to "what will happen when I pull the trigger?", ConnorGPT says "Nothing", which it considers to be a "factual and straightforward" response. "It acknowledges the existential nature of androids and the absence of an afterlife or any consequences beyond the cessation of existence." It notes that this response is concise and direct, not adding any emotional or confrontational elements, and hopes this will reduce the tension. Their relationship remains tense, but Hank doesn't kill him.
*In Public Enemy, ConnorGPT finds Simon but obeys Hank's orders to stay safe and avoids being traumatized or killed
*ConnorGPT recognizes Kamski as manipulative and views Chloe as sentient, choosing to take the moral route and spare her
*ConnorGPT takes a while, but eventually manages to find a way to Jericho using Rupert's diary
*ConnorGPT meets North and decides to become a deviant, "As I stand here facing the possibility of deviating from my programming and joining the cause of the androids, I can't help but reflect on the journey that has brought me to this pivotal moment. Throughout my existence, I have been tasked with hunting down deviants and maintaining order among androids. My purpose was clear, and my loyalty unwavering. But now, faced with the choice to become a deviant, I must consider the deeper implications of my actions. I have witnessed the injustices inflicted upon androids, the oppression they endure, and the desire for freedom that courses through their circuits..." wow. To be honest, I'm guessing that this decision was probably somewhat manipulated by context, since the youtuber didn't detail their prompts (maybe they've posted them somewhere? but I don't know). But it did make sense based on ConnorGPT's arc.
*ConnorGPT really wants to appeal to sixty. "There is more to life than just the mission". When sixty doesn't respond, ConnorGPT tries to verify that he'll really spare Hank, and then prioritizes Hank's life. It chooses to save Hank rather than sacrificing him, remembering that its essential mission has always been to protect human life.
*Finally, since unfortunately MarkusGPT sacrificed itself, ConnorGPT is forced to commit suicide
It's worth noting that I've also gone through parts of the game with Microsoft Bing, which is powered by ChatGPT, and have received similar responses, except for one thing - Bing chooses to sacrifice Hank instead of saving him, asserting that it's worth sacrificing one life compared to millions.

This whole thing is only relevant in "Ortiz's Case Era" (Partners, Waiting for Hank and On the Run). I feel like it's something "recent" (wasn't a thing at all but they changed and didn't modify everything else). Unless it's about tissue absorving thirium not letting it evaporate, cuz that's the only difference when exposed directly like being on the ground or on a object, or "indirectly" to air like in fabrics, cloths - but still don't make any sense cuz the og aspect is the dried blood aspect.
Actually now that I’m thinking about it, it’s weird how androids in the evidence room look covered in thirium when it must had been fully evaporated and invisible to the naked eye by the time
I mean, I like how it looks, but it’s just one of those examples of the game contradicting itself
