Because maybe there was a time when the Old Boss loved his son. But that love turned into fear into anger.

He destroyed the only meaningful bond he had. And sentenced him to a slow and painful death. He lost whatever love he had for him. And yet here’s Hirotsu talking about Atsushi with nothing but fondness.

Even as his eyes are full of grief.

The Old Boss merely pretended to be torn up about it but Hirotsu was devastated.

Listen guys I know we all like to think of our favorite queer pairings as married, but in Japan gay marriage is unfortunately illegal, now this isn’t some that has to effect your fanfics, but I would actually like if we as a community acknowledged it more. I just think it’s more impactful if the characters had to struggle with the biases of some of the people around them. It would make the characters situation more relatable, and it would also make for interesting plot for the fic, even if it is just a side thing. For some of the ships it might even make for interesting cultural shock, like with Ranpoe, since America does allow gay marriage in most states, while Japan doesn’t it would probably make for a funny interaction. My point is while homophobia and discrimination is unfortunate, it doesn’t mean we have to ignore it in stories, and pretend that it doesn’t exist at all. Idk man I just want some of my fics to be more interesting and this is one way to do it.

Edit: this is not for those who write stories mainly as escapism. If what you want in the story is to play around without the shit called homophobia, then you do you.

Edit: I wanted to say that, this could also very well be used for crack, considering canon BSD, and not an AU where they aren't all criminals. Just imagine, Dazai in a wedding dress, using a machine gun to take down the government officials who won't let him have his wedding with Chuuya (or whoever you ship him with). It also kinda depends on what year it is in Japan

He looks sad, instead. Sympathetic, even. Nothing like how Chuuya had once scowled and asked what it would take for him to being stop being such a suicidal maniac, knowing better than to show concern.

Dazai raises a brow. “This is nothing new,” and it’s flippant, teasing. Atsushi frowns, lips curving further downwards. In his head, Chuuya is calling him a mackerel and grumbling about being forced into this mission, but tugging Dazai along by the crook of his elbow towards a stand.

Are there any Dazatsu fics that you can recommend reading? I've tried finding some but not all are really great so I thought a second persons advice might help.

Hi anon! Of course I can but I dont really read recent fics on ao3 so they are probably a bit old but! I'll put author recommendations instead who writes dazatsu and example of the fics I like from them so you can check them out yourself!

First is @looking-for-stray-dogs or planet_b612 on ao3. She is like, the goddess of dazatsu fanfics if you ask me because she captured their characters perfectly in my opinion. I think there's not any dazatsu shippers who dont know her but here is one of the fics I like from them. It has getting back together trope which is rare for dazatsu.

Second is @blchwaaaan with the same username on ao3. They are specialized in writing angst, but their fluff is top tier too. This is one of their dazatsu fluff I like, and this one is the angst one.

Next is @mamichigo though they are currently not actively writing for bsd anymore but it's worth checking them out. Here is one of the ones I like from them.

@ladytective is good too. They are samuela on ao3 and not really active now but still updating their ongoing series that I really look forward to. They write romance with humors but still will make you clench your heart with the fluff and light angst. This is one of my fav!

Their friend treetrunkdaddy also write good dazatsu but I forgot their tumblr (sorry!) but this one is example of their fics.

@datura-foxglove is not an active author anymore too but their dazatsu is worth checking! There are some on their blog but there are some on ao3 too. This one is one of the fics I like.

“I’m glad they’re treating you well, but it’s almost too well.” he huffed. A confused but amused laugh leaves Atsushi as his head tilts softly to the side and corners of his mouth perk up. It was too tender of an expression, Dazai couldn’t help but be captivated. “But… It's not like I’m possessive or anything. Everyone looks at you with such bright faces, I can’t help but want you to smile at me too.”

“You’re so immature, Dazai,” Atsushi teased. “I smile at you every day, even more than you know.”

“Forget about it, it’s nothing.” Dazai flusters and continues to pout while dramatically swooping one leg over the other.

He’s just thankful for the lightened mood as they wait to be called on. Some time passes, occasionally with a nurse craning their neck from the hallway past the reception desk. The realization dawns on Dazai that he didn’t think to bring anything for the waiting room. He had been so wrapped up in the doctor’s visit he forgot the classic wait time before it. Dazai didn’t mind just passing time, he often would get lost in his own thoughts when alone waiting for the train. Right now though, he was not alone. He was sitting, doing nothing, with another man next to him also doing nothing. Whenever he and Kunikida were waiting together, the other would always pull out his notebook to scribble down next year's hourly agenda. With Atsushi beside him, the two were staring off into space together. Somehow, Atsushi still looked bubbly as his gaze drifted over the speckled ceiling tiles. Being unoccupied, secluded, and waiting in silence sat next to another man… Felt gay.

It didn’t help that nearly everyone shot them a glance before shuffling off to continue the whisper chain. It’s not like the air around them was littered with sparkles and rays of pink light which framed them in a shoujo-esque way.

Looking again to his company, Atsushi’s eyes were catching light in the most brilliant manner. His two hues appeared to shift as the gleam on his eyes glistened even under the artificial ceiling lights. If one were to get lost even closer to his face, there would be rich purple speckles dancing around his iris with shining gold trailing behind. With a quick peek towards Dazai, Atsushi’s eyebrows perked as he blinked and turned to face him.

Window blinds not far past them were hoisted up and blasted the back of Atsushi’s head with natural white light. His mouth parted as if going to speak, revealing a subtle gradient of pink to red over chapped lips. The bottom one froze in hesitance, and grazed against his teeth.

“Dazai?”

He flinched at the onslaught of light as a small apology came from across the room. Forcing himself to accustom his eyes to the radiant glow unable to outshine Atsushi, he sputtered out a “huh” and a “what?”

“Is there something on my face?”

“No, why?” Despite asking, Atsushi wasn’t prepared for that answer. He rushed to turn straight ahead, unable to meet the other’s eyes. A blush crept up his cheeks as he couldn't find anywhere around the room to rest his gaze.

“You were staring.”

Here's yet another BSD OC I've been meaning to introduce since last year but alas, free time grows ever so scarce. She's inspired by Haruko Enomoto - mostly notably known as Haruko Kunikida, Doppo Kunikida's second wife and novelist!

Her ability is a reference to one of Haruko's works, True Heart. More info under the Read More break~

Ability

True Heart (真ごころ, Magokoro) reveals the truth in an affected person's words as well as their connections to other parties, be those personal, professional and/or criminal.

When activated, Haruko's ability will allow her to see the affected person's words as bright blue visual writing in front of her eyes, much similar to a projection. Anything colored in red, no matter how small it is of a detail, is 100% a lie, even if the remaining of the sentence is colored normally.

If she chooses to further investigate the person in question by 'searching their heart', her ability will show her their involvement with other people through projected lines that connect one to another; the color of the connecting line is indicative of what kind of relationship it is. As much as it intrudes on people's privacy, showing even personal relationships no matter how much of a secret those are, this has been a key trait of Haruko's ability that has aided her on solving many cases before in which multiple criminal parties were allied to each other.

When in use, True Heart will turn Haruko's eyes a brighter blue with scarlet-colored pupils and irises ends. There are no exceptions to the effect of Haruko's ability other than herself and Osamu Dazai.

Personality

Haruko is a down-to-earth, level-headed woman. Her usual composure when at work usually tricks others into thinking she's the stern type but once she's off her shift and breaks character, her joyful and good-humored personality shines through. She eases up the most while drinking at her favorite kyabakura, especially if in the company of a drinking buddy, becoming chatty and endearingly silly.

Extremely adaptable, despite her overall considerate and caring nature, she's not one to be lenient with the unjust and will seek to punish those accordingly.

She carries a stationery store-bought small notebook on her at all times whose notable features are its flower-print cover embellished with the word 理想 (Risou, Ideal) in golden letters. In a similar fashion to Kunikida, Haruko is into scheduling and planned routines albeit hers are much more flexible than his. That didn't stop them from hitting it off as soon as they met however, quickly bonding over their shared interest. Now and then she changes notebooks once they run out of pages to write in, but the flower-print cover and golden writing are always a must-have for her.

As a police department employee, she's proficient with handling firearms and has remarkable physical combat skills, being well-versed in mixed martial art styles such as taekwondo and kickboxing. Her strongest traits are her endurance and willpower.

Backstory

In the original story's timeline, Haruko is first introduced rather early on but becomes more relevant as a character during the events of the Sky Casino arc. She works as a private investigator under her senior officer, Minoura, as he's the only one who knows about her ability and keeps it a secret since the use of those without a permit is considered taboo. Given that the information she finds thanks to her ability always leads her to uncovering actual, relevant clues and evidences in the cases she has solved, no one has ever suspected a thing.

However, it was exactly because of her ability that she was one of the few people that doubted the truth imposed by The Book when reality was altered to frame the ADA as a terrorist group, to the point of questioning her own judgment when no one else did. This state of unrest led her to conducting an investigation on her own, trying to find loose ends whilst staying out of the police's sights in order not to be accused of coniving with the ADA. After all, she believed in their innocence thanks to their previous collaborations with the Police Department, having personally met and inspected most of its members with her ability.

She's finally able of making a breakthrough once Ranpo shows himself on broadcast; while that geared the people affected by The Book to think for themselves and see the situation more clearly, that allowed Haruko to use her ability on Ranpo and not only confirm everything he said was true, but also gave her some leads to follow, cueing her into investigating the Decay of Angels more closely. She's come very close to finding out Kamui's real identity thanks to that.

Currently, she's helping the Police Department deal with the aftermath of the vampire outbreak.

Trivia

🌸 Similar to her irl counterpart, Haruko comes from a financially poor background. When younger, she lived in a humble village and made a living off flower arranging lectures, only moving in to the city after getting her job in the Police Department to support herself. Nowadays, flower arranging is one of her favorite hobbies as it gives her a warm feeling of nostalgia. 🌸 She can hold her alcohol pretty well but if she drinks to the point of becoming too drunk, she'll start crying over pointless things (like how one time she saw a mother goose with its young trailing after and thought it was very cute, for example). 🌸 Despite Haruko's dainty appearance, she's physically stronger than she looks. Rumor has it that she's able of effortlessly lifting Kunikida off the ground regardless of him being comically much taller than her. When asked, he neither confirms nor denies the claim. 🌸 As expected of someone in an investigative career, she's clever, with a good sense of responsibility and a keen intuition when it comes to predicting outcomes in the cases handed to her. Such adeptness paired with her ability make Haruko an obnoxious foe to face head on. 🌸 Even if the concept of ideals draws her in, she mostly relies on a very personal, strong sense of loyalty and duty rather than idealized courses of action. 🌸 Much like Kunikida, she does have a 'requirements list' for an ideal partner and even with her list not being as extensive as his, he still does not fit all requirements. That didn't stop them from falling in love anyway, as she does not fit all of his requirements either - being 4 short of being a perfect match to the list.
