K-Pop Spotlight: DAY6

Come one, come all to a K-Pop Spotlight that is sure to dazzle and delight ’til the final curtain. This week, all eyes are on DAY6 following the release of their eighth mini-album, Fourever, and brand new title track, "Welcome to the Show." We caught up with the band to discuss their goals as they approach their 10th anniversary and their ever-growing connection to their fans through their music. Check out our full interview below!

Tracks like “Welcome to the Show,” “The Power of Love,” and “Get The Hell Out” seem to have very different themes. Can you tell us a little about how these songs relate to each other and what aspects make this album cohesive?

SUNGJIN: As we pursue the idea of being a 'band that sings every moment,' it seems like our albums, including the recent one, prioritize diversity in songs and situations rather than unity. Consequently, our albums contain various genres and narratives. However, there seems to be a commonality in most songs, depicting situations that everyone has either gone through or might experience.

Young K: First and foremost, I would say this album is a compilation of the best songs we could create. There's definitely a theme of love running through it. "Welcome to the Show," "The Power of Love," and "Get The Hell Out" all talk about the concept of love.

What goes into creating titles for DAY6 songs and albums, especially those that don’t come directly from your lyrics? Do you find it hard to condense the intentions and themes of a song into a title?

Young K: While there have been cases like that, all the songs on this album came from the lyrics. Sometimes, when choosing a title, we select the one that best describes the song—other times, we choose to give it a twist or make it more intriguing.

WONPIL: Naming songs involves a lot of deliberation. We often contemplate which title will catch the eye and capture the song's essence. Usually, we try to take it from a verse in the chorus. This can be a challenging part of the songwriting process.

Is there a creative project you’ve always wanted to work on but haven’t gotten the chance/found the time?

SUNGJIN: I'm very curious, and have a principle of "trying to experience as much as possible." There are so many things I want to try musically and personally, especially among the things I know but haven't tried yet.

DOWOON: I hope we can have a song that we can collaborate on with My Day, like a choir.

What does your work/studio setup look like? Where do you feel the most creatively inspired?

DOWOON: We try to keep the studio as tidy as possible and make it comfortable for practice sessions.

WONPIL: When working on songs, we talk a lot. We get inspiration from little conversations, joking around, sharing stories, and listening to music from various eras regardless of genre while giving opinions. We also try to build emotional connections with the songs. There’s a lot of communication going on. The songwriting process takes place in the studio of our long-time collaborator, composer Hong Jisang, with whom we've been working together since our debut.

How do you want to evolve as a musician/producer?

Young K: I want to be eagerly anticipated and awaited as an artist. Without those who wait for us, we wouldn't release or even step onto the stage. So I’m always thankful for My Day.

WONPIL: My biggest goal is to make good music for My Day and the public, so I think I'll continue to ponder. When working on songs, I pour my sincerity into them. I constantly strive to express this sincerity musically, fully capturing the emotions I want to convey. I hope to create songs that can still be listened to even after 10 or 20 years.

Design your own Tumblr blog: choose an aesthetic, a blog name, and would you be a frequent poster or lurker?

SUNGJIN: I think I’ll use it to catch up on friends' updates. For the blog name, THUMB BLUR sounds good to me. I might end up being a lurker who never posts.

DOWOON: Maybe a blog for plants? I think I'll post it like a diary.

[Exclusive] DAY6 to make a comeback as a whole group in March

Band DAY6 will return as a whole next month. According to a report by this newspaper on the 16th, DAY6 will make a comeback as a whole in the middle of next month. Currently, DAY6 is filming a new music video ahead of their comeback. DAY6's full-length comeback is more than three years after its 7th mini album "The Book of Us: Negentropy - Chaos Swallow Up in Love," which was released in April 2021. Since the release of the album, DAY6 has completed their military service, with all members entering military service starting with member Sungjin in the same year. They ended their military service in November last year when Wonpil, who joined the team for the last time, was discharged from the military. This comeback is expected to be the first full-length album by DAY6 since the end of their military service. Another reason to look forward to DAY6's comeback is that they have secured a strong fandom and popularity by toppling the charts with songs such as 'You Were Beautiful' and 'Time of Our Life' during their military service. Expectations are high on what kind of music they will perform in their comeback in more than three years, who have built their own musical colors with their own songs.

“Mom, I promise there’s nothing to worry about.”

“Are you sure? I can drive up and help.”

“Yes, I’m all packed up, everything’s fine Mom, this isn’t my first time moving and there’s no way I’m letting you drive seven hours across the country,” You continue as she rants on about the overwhelming piles of paperwork and mess around the house, “I’ll be there to sort everything out soon, so don’t worry about that just… try to relax.” 

“I’ll text you when I’m on the road, ok? I love you Mom!”

“I love you too, I’ll see you soon, yes?”

“Of course.”  

You throw the phone down on the bed, your childhood hits playlist muffled by the ocean of blankets that it landed amongst. Looking around your room, an exasperated ‘fuck’ escapes your lips. Despite what you had just told your mother, your room was most definitely not packed up and you were most definitely not ready to leave behind the life that you had built just to return to your sleepy hometown. 

After your Dad’s death, you had decided to move back into your childhood home, to keep your Mom company, settle down, and have a quieter life. You’ve had your fair amount of fun in the city and you were ready to return to your roots.

A few hours later,  there’s only one set of drawers left for you to pack up. You’re a sweaty mess as the sun beats down on you through the windows. Pulling your hair back, you position yourself in front of the drawers alongside some boxes, bubble wrap and packing tape. 

Opening the bottom drawer you are welcomed by a pile of clothes that had been messily shoved in over the years. Okay not too much work left. Picking up a purple hoodie, a pile of envelopes reveal themselves, all of them addressed to the same person. 

Choi Soobin. 

Against your better judgement, you give in to your nostalgic curiosity and begin to unseal the first envelope. As far as everyone else knows, you hadn’t thought about Soobin in a couple of years - you had curated a nonchalant persona, one that didn’t care about the past and especially not the people that you had left behind. This, of course, was nothing but a persona, a facade that you had delicately crafted over the years. If you stopped lying to yourself, you would realise that he’s always on your mind. Breadcrumbs of your love littered through every street that you walk, every corner you turn, there’s always a part of you that longs for him. He lives in a part of your brain meant only for youth, for easier times. Everytime you see something bunny themed, or hear a Day6 song on the radio, you have to fight against every nerve in your body not to text or call him. So yes, it might seem like you don’t really care but oh my god, you’re not sure you’ve ever been so hung up over the past in the same way that you are when it comes to him.

Hi. It’s been a while. One month and 24 days, to be exact. 

I hope you’re okay. I’m sorry if this is weird. Is this weird? Oh god, this is probably weird. 

It’s just, we promised to give each other space and time but I can’t seem to let you go. Every second of every day all I want to do is pick up the phone and call you. You’re the only one I wanted to talk to after my first day at this new job, and when I moved in and I couldn’t figure out the stove, and when I found a new cafe nearby that actually knows how to make good macchiatos. 

Maybe I should’ve stayed. Maybe I should’ve told you to stop talking about the opportunities and convince me to stay with you instead. It’s hard to be happy without you by my side, I miss you and I feel selfish saying it.

We said it was for the best and besides, I was the one who moved away, I was the one who broke your heart. Am I allowed to miss you?

Ateez' "Guerilla" was one of the first songs/MVs I saw and I went "oh, I guess I love them now" it was so good. I love them a lot, and their MVs are bananas. Insanely talented.

OOO have a little BL-verse concept music video series "be #1-6" that you can watch here (with 2 bonus MVs/songs because they're amazing). Everything they do is incredible, and their cover was one of the best I've ever been to.

88rising’s annual festival, Head In The Clouds, is just around the corner! The festival celebrates Asian music, with a diverse group of rising and/or well-known stars. Here is our guide to this weekend’s Head In The Clouds 2021 lineup.

Day 1 (November 6, 2021)

DPR LIVE & DPR IAN Hong Da-Bin and Christian Yu, known best by their stage names DPR LIVE and DPR IAN, are part of the independent label Dream Perfect Regime. South Korean singer-rapper DPR LIVE debuted in 2017 with the EP Coming To You Live. He has since then released many songs that demonstrate his creativity and capability. Meanwhile, Korean-Australian singer and rapper DPR IAN is the founder, creative director, producer, and chief editor of DPR. In late 2020, he made his solo debut with “So Beautiful” and showed the world just how multifaceted he is. Both artists are notorious for their brilliant abilities and innovative artistry that continue to inspire a new generation of musicians.

CL CL is no stranger to the international music scene. She debuted as rapper of legendary K-pop group 2NE1 in 2009, where she achieved her first Billboard chart ranking. Since then, she has launched her own solo career, with hits including “The Baddest Female” and “Hello Bitches.” In 2018, CL participated in the Closing Ceremony for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, where she performed her 2NE1 debut track, “Fire,” and “Hello Bitches.” This year marks a new page in CL’s journey. The rapper-songwriter returned with her first full-length album, ALPHA. The long-awaited album consists of 11 riveting and bold tracks, including singles “Spicy” and “Lover Like Me.” As an experienced performer, CL is ready to take the Head In The Clouds stage by storm.

Day 2 (November 7, 2021)

Feel Ghood Music (Tiger JK, Yoon Mi-Rae, BIZZY, BIBI) Four different musicians from the label Feel Ghood Music are set to perform this year at Head In The Clouds. South Korean singer-songwriter, BIBI, debuted on May 15, 2019, with her single “Binu” and has since made a name for herself while captivating listeners with her sleek vocals. Korean hip-hop group MFBTYconsists of some of the most respected rappers,��Tiger JK, Yoon Mi-Rae, and Bizzy. After four years, they made a comeback in 2019 with the EP Dream Catcher. With their unique impact, MFBTY have a strong influence in the Korean hip-hop community. 

eaJ eaJ is DAY6’s Jae moniker in his solo endeavors. Since 2020, the DAY6 vocalist and lead guitarist has ventured into his own singing-songwriting career, first releasing the song “LA TRAINS” on his YouTube channel. He then collaborated with other 88rising artists such as Rich Brian, keshi, and the latest being with Seori in “Dive with you.” Compared to his contribution to DAY6, eaJ is more stripped down and personal. With soulful ballads and poetic lyrics, eaJ has proved himself to be a soulful artist.

Hearing all the other songs people have shouted out has been super fun!! My taste is extremely eclectic and I jump all over the place so… we’ll see what this turns out to be!

Never can have enough of her!! One of my favorite artists of all time. Recently saw a drag performance of this, so glam.

A classic. Saw them in concert recently, they are GREAT live. Better than in the studio honestly, oops.

Lol this is a weird one. I was listening to this album in the background while doing some work since I kept focusing too much on either music or English podcasts. Figured a Korean chatty sort of thing would work since I don’t know the language haha. If anyone wants to translate what they’re saying, send it my way. Here’s the song they’re commenting on if you’re interested. I highly recommend it, actually.

For some reason I just got really back into this song last month. It’s so fun!!

10) Closer by Tegan and Sara

Quite literally the song that made me realize you could desire women. Like, carnally. I have a vivid memory of watching the music video (in class on the one computer, WHY??) and reading the lyrics and just… realizing. I knew men and women and men and men could be attracted sexually to each other but… women? It had never crossed my mind. I had been poisoned by this belief that girls who liked girls did it in a “pure” sort of way. I got excited that I was allowed to feel this way, then terrified that I… may very well feel that way. This song was quite literally my sexual awakening (and triggered quite a bit of panic and internalized homophobia). Kinda hilarious now, watching the music video back. It’s so joyful, not promiscuous at all. I was in the nascent period of questioning my sexuality, at that point wondering if I was some sort of bisexual, and this song poured fuel into the fire.

from fourever: welcome to the show, didn't know. i warmed up to (and got too passionate about) get the hell out and sad ending later on. the title song has such a beautiful and fresh lyrics. i used to feel this lungs-full-of-fresh-air type of excitement towards youngk's waited, and this had the same effect on me. to say or to receive those expressions.. the thought of it makes me happy. in theory.

from band aid: melt down, shxtty game, still there (and occasionally i'm fine) when i go out, melt down or shxtty game is the first songs I play. the desperate singing of youngk and the low tone of sungjin and wonpil in still there... oh my god.

from 30: i don't wanna lose, check pattern, i don't wanna do anything, as always. i get the feeling you mentioned. that's why i intentionally didn't check any of the promotions and dived right into the album with the possibility in my mind that i might not like it. check pattern is beautifully sung by sungjin. i don't wanna lose got the biggest reaction from me. i am happy to meet with sungjin's writing style. finally we have an idea on each member's individual taste.

yes you're right, it's so nice to have heard all of them in solo projects and see what they explore and like - it means a lot that they can produce strong solo work but also work together on the day6 sound and keep exploring new things and grow as a band

the funny thing is i actually really hesitated between get the hell out and sad ending for fourever lol as for shxtty game the "can i do it?/can i win it?" part is so catchy, i love it when they're playful, one of my face songs from them is 365247 (also you pointing out their low tones in still there made me realize it's what i like best about the song, they sound so good and i love when lower tones are used)

i don't wanna lose was the most impactful to me, there's something in his voice in the chorus that really hits and kind of makes me want to cry, especially when he says "daeche wae /gamdangdo mot hal mankeum"

Hi! Hahaha, I just want to have fun with this 30-day challenge by @nunayomtae to celebrate and count down to our beloved Younghyun's birthday! I’m not going to stretch it out over 30 days, though—LOL! I’ll answer all the day's challenges in two posts. Let's start! I will write on this post for day 1-15!

Day 1 : When did you notice Young K? I first noticed him during the WIN program when they had the rap battle. Young K was on a team with Jackson and Mark, and he confidently dissed YG. I thought, "WOW, his confidence is off the charts!"

Day 2 : What made you stan Young K? I just love how passionate, hardworking, kind, and goofy he is. He’s a person full of curiosity, and at the same time, also a couch potato. I love how adorable he is!

Day 3 : what team are you Young K/Brian/Younghyun/Kang Bra? I’m on the team of whoever Kang Younghyun is. Young K is Brian, Kang Younghyun, Kang Bra, Kang Yaman and Bbirongie. He is one person with his flaws and strengths. Whoever he wants to be, he should live as himself and be happy!

Day 9 : What's the thing you learned from Young K? Do the things you love passionately, no matter how hard it is, how difficult the obstacles you face are, how tired you are, or how big the sacrifices you have to make. Challenges in life are like untied shoelaces that you need to tie if you want to move forward. I also learned from him that you have to believe in your ability to accomplish things, and you should love yourself more than anyone else.

Day 10 : Favourite Young K era? I’ve admired him since Day6's debut. I’ve seen him grow from a passionate teenager to a mature and hardworking adult.

as for which groups i like, we actually have a lot of groups in common! nct, svt and txt are also loves ! (pls dont ask me to pick biases im very bad at picking favorites ahfjdskhg) and omg day6!! in love with their music truly. i've listened to the rose and nflying and i've actually recently been getting into xheroes and p1h ! i adore kbands (and bands in general tbh) so much!

as for girlgroups, i actually listen to a lot of them as well ! i actually haven't really listened much to stayc but they seem so lovely ! my faves are probs itzy, le ssera, twice, red velvet, purple kiss and billlie? but i'm probably forgetting some agskdh. i actually love a lot of soloists as well but i'll stop here ahsdkf

okay but ateez…..their recent cb was really good like im still obsessed with cyberpunk, new world, etc lol im looking forward to the cb coming up!! idk much about them but i feel like ive absorbed some things through my moots 😂 i had the same thing with ateez too when i first got into kpop, i was like idk if this is for me either but now with nct and skz noise music i think my taste has changed LOL. it’s so interesting how our taste in art (not just music) can vary depending on the timing of when we come across it

ooh i listened to billie’s stuff recently and i liked it a lot, i also like their concept and even like the album/track titles! and they make a whole separate album thats a soundtrack for their actual album?? i think thats so cool
