CHICAGO MED | Two Halves Make A Whole
✮ Prologue - Setting the Scene ✮
[Chapter List] [Part One]
(Starting Season One Episode One)
(This series will follow the series, starting 1x01 and roughly sticking to the timeline and events of the Chicago Med with some divergence from canon to incorporate the original character and events I’ve included to involve them.)
Chicago Med (One Chicago) : Connor Rhodes x Original Female Character
Warnings: Swearing, adult themes, usual hospital/emergency department blood and gore.
Tumblr media
That morning was supposed to be easy. There’s a list of things to do, items to have prepared and packed the night before, scrubs sized and in your new locker ready and waiting. She liked the order of it in their otherwise chaotic lives, and her fiancée, even though he’d laugh at her incessant need to organise well in advance, couldn’t deny that this time it was helpful.
It’s why, when the train he was catching that morning derailed, he knew he had surgical gauze and bandages in his backpack and was already working on patients when the paramedics arrived. Hell, he could practically hear her jibing as he tied off a tourniquet for the middle-aged woman he was currently trying to ensure didn’t bleed out from a nicked artery.
“I won’t need this stuff, you know they do have gauze at a hospital.”
“Yeees and the last time I said that, I ended up stuck in a pile up for six hours tearing my second favourite shirt to pieces. I still miss that shirt..” there was a wistful sigh, and an amused laugh between the two of them, before she’d continued “Save the shirt. Carry the bandages.”
Connor couldn’t help but chuckle at the memory, earning a raised brow from the woman’s husband, gripping onto his wife’s hand with earnest concern. With an apologetic half smile, he nodded and moved on.
All the while, Mia, much to her fiancées chagrin about the painful beeping of the dawn alarm, had arrived early to the emergency department at Gaffney morning. Having already spoken to Goodwin, had the full guided tour by a remarkably well informed and equally witty nurse named Maggie, and changed into her burgundy scrubs and organised the items in her locker according to size and usefulness, she felt prepared for the inevitable storm that would likely soon consume them.
An auburn haired doctor, Halstead, as he’d been introduced to her as, and a heavily pregnant yet desperately sad, dark haired Doctor Manning had quickly become co-workers she had found rapour with, remarking on their shared love of an author that she’d caught Doctor Halstead reading as she met him in the doctors lounge earlier, and the absolute tragedy that was drinking coffee without milk. She’d chosen to stand behind her fellow female doctor when the great unveiling of the new ED had begun, hoping to catch some tips on which nurses were less likely to bite her head off and any regular patients that she should watch out for when their pagers set off in a chorus of chirps.
She hated the sound of those things.
Not for a lack of care of what they preceded, naturally if she was apathetic to the pain of others she would have never become a doctor in the first place. No, she simply hated the sound because, in her mind, it felt taunting.
Patients she could handle; find the injuries, assess the history, treat the symptoms and causes, stitch them back together… An elegant dance between science and compassion. It was the families she couldn’t bare. The questions, the accusations of how she wasn’t doing all she could, the ever shifting emotions she had to compensate for during every update.
Shaking her head, Mia snapped herself from her internal monologue of “fuck pagers”, and grabbed several pairs of surgical gloves to shove into her white-coat pockets and a stethoscope that she draped around her neck, and began to prepare for the onslaught of, from what she’d gathered from Maggie and April, a train derailment only a few miles away.
Looking down at her feet for only a moment, the same pair of lucky sneakers she had owned since she began her medical residency, what felt like a lifetime ago, battered and their black shade closer to grey now, she took a deep breath. Straightening up, she pushed the strands of loose hair that had already unravelled from her ponytail back behind her ears before she snapped on the first pair of gloves, and turned to the ED doors.

Comfort in Fear - Sarah Reese x Reader - Chicago Med
Requests: I am not sure if this has already been requested, but cute request if you're willing to do it. The cast watch a new scary movie, but Sarah gets scared and the reader notices. Even though Reese is a bit reluctant they end up cuddling through the movie and she falls asleep on the reader?
Could you do a Sarah Reese x reader fem fic where Sarah meets the new ED resident and begins to fall for her but doesn’t realise it until Maggie points it out??
You didn't expect in your wildest dreams to end up being the Emergency Department Resident of Gaffney Chicago Medical Centre. Simply because it was the one place you wanted to be. You didn't think you were that lucky.
You didn't expect your colleagues to be so friendly either.
They were friendly enough that you were invited to go see a horror movie with them.
Now you were sat in the cinema, with Sarah Reese on your left as you sat in the aisle seat. Connor and Ava were infront of you whilst Natalie, Will, April and Maggie were all behind you and Sarah.
You weren't sure who had booked the seating arrangements but you didn't complain as you slipped a Tango Ice Blast, chuckling as Reese flicked a piece of popcorn into her mouth.
"What is this movie again?" She enquired, leaving you to pause as you looked at your ticket.
"That new horror movie apparently." You replied before the lights went out and trailers began to play.
///
You hated jumpscares. You'd played video games like Until Dawn with your roommates through university and when you'd crashed at their house over the summer after you'd been kicked out.
That was a detail you left out as Sarah almost jumped out of her seat at a jumpscare.
"You okay?" You whispered, noticing how she had almost thrown the popcorn bucket if you hadn't grabbed it from her in time.
Maggie frowned as you passed the bucket of popcorn backwards to her, taking it from you as you tried to get Sarah to calm down.
"Breathe, it's just a movie." You whispered, hesistantly placing your hand on Sarah's shoulder.
You grimaced as another jumpscare went off, leaving her to flinch and almost headbutt you in the process.
Reese's reluctance to move your arm from around her shoulder decreased as the movie played, the warmth of your hoodie lulling her to sleep as the movie went from jumpscares to actual horror movie plot development.
You didn't know that Sarah was asleep until the lights had turned back on, signifying that the movie was over.
Everyone else was getting ready to head out but you couldn't move. You didn't dare move due to the weight of the sleeping psychiatry resident on your shoulder.
"Y/n?" April began, noticing how you put your finger to your lips as you gestured to how Reese was asleep.
"Did Sarah sleep through a horror movie?" Ava verbalised to Connor, who looked confusedly at Reese whilst you tried to stir her.
"Sarah, wake up, the movie's over." You whispered, stirring the sleeping doctor.
"What? Oh! I'm so sorry!"
"It's fine, but if you wanted the popcorn, I think April and Maggie finished it." You chuckled, oblivious to how Sarah's face was as red as your hoodie.
///
"Okay, what is going on with you?" Maggie asked, raising an eyebrow at Reese after pulling her aside from where she'd been doing a psych consult for you for a patient.
"I don't know, I just, I can't focus when I'm around Y/n, I keep getting really warm and the hospital is well ventilated and I don't know why my stomach keeps getting all fluttery?"
"Like butterflies?" Maggie asked, trying to school her features as she tried not to give away the conclusion she'd already gotten to.
"Yeah... butterflies." Sarah replied, pulling her lip between her teeth to chew as she spotted you chatting with April.
"Around Y/n, specifically?" Maggie prompted, leaving Sarah to nod once again.
"Reese, you've fallen for them. In fact, I think you fell Y/n after you literally fell asleep on their shoulder during the horror movie." Maggie replied, watching Sarah's face melt into realisation as she caught your eye from across the room.
She immediately looked away from you, shifting her gaze back to Maggie as you gave her a soft smile.
"Oh." She whispered, swallowing nervously as this realisation.

Truth | 16:22
Time of death!au; Ava and Jason tell each other the truth
CW: suicide mention, alcohol tw, SA mention
***
The wind whipped past her with surprising force, though it had no effect on her. Still, Ava couldn’t help the human impulse to shiver at the thought of the chilly Chicago air. She had never truly adjusted to the climate change in her move, nor did she think moving in the first place had been the right choice. Ava wondered deep down if she would still be alive had she never taken the fellowship, if she had never met Connor Rhodes, but she couldn’t answer that for herself. She wouldn’t ever know and that was quite possibly her biggest regret.
“If you think any harder your head will explode.”
“What are you, five?” Ava rolled her eyes at Jason as he materialized beside her, leaning against the concrete ledge she had perched herself on. She knew her companion spent most of his time up there, since his death place wasn’t particularly accessible, but she saw how it impacted him. Jason’s eyes never glanced over the edge and he didn’t make a move to sit beside her or even get any closer to the safety bar. Despite his apparent comfort with the rooftop, he clearly didn’t enjoy the height anymore. It made sense, of course, but it also made him seem much more human to her.
“What are you hyper focused on today, Bekker?”
“Just what-ifs,” she replied, “If I had never moved here, never stepped foot in this damned hospital, would I still be alive?”
“It’s hard to say. I ask myself that a lot,” he admitted, looking up at her. There was a vulnerability in his eyes that made Ava uncomfortable, not because she didn’t want him to be vulnerable with her but because she didn’t know what it meant. He was so calm and reassuring when Ava was brash and impulsive. Jason looking scared and upset wasn’t something she was used to.
“I mean we did this to ourselves,” she sighed a little, “Can we really blame the hospital for that one?”
“I mean, were you suicidal before?”
“Before Gaffney?” Ava found it laughable that she even had to think about it, “Borderline Personality Disorder, Jason. Diagnosed when I was 19.”
“Shit.”
“Makes sense now, doesn’t it?”
“I mean… that doesn’t mean you would have snapped and killed someone — or yourself — if you hadn’t left home.”
“Maybe,” it was hard to think of life going any other way than how it had ended, “What about you?”
“It was med school that did it to me. The transition from school to residency was too much. I wasn’t cut out for any of it and I could see that… I was turning into my father,” neither of them mentioned how Jason’s voice shook a little.
“How so?”
“The drinking. I promised myself years before I wouldn’t ever drink and yet… one hard day and I turned to the bottle and it only got worse. I couldn’t take it anymore, Ava, I just saw myself becoming him. So I ended it, before he could take over.”
“I’m sorry, Jason…”
“Why did you do it?”
“What’s that?”
“Kill Connor’s dad,” was the last question Ava expected and it caused her nonexistent heart to jump in her chest. She hated to even think of that man, relieved she had never seen him in her months in the in between. If she never thought about Cornelius Rhodes again it would be too soon, but she felt like Jason deserved to know the truth.
“I- he was a trigger for me… he was trying to get between Connor and I. My brain, the way it’s wired, I got so paranoid thinking my favourite person would leave me. I hate to say I was obsessed with Connor but that’s how BPD goes sometimes.”
“Is that the only reason?”
Ava knew he could see her holding back, “He- I don’t really know how to say it… Cornelius didn’t have boundaries. He did some stuff to me that brought up not so good memories and I just snapped. It doesn’t excuse what I did, I know that, but he was not a good man, Jason.”
“Oh,” it took a minute but she saw the realization dawn on his face, “Oh, Ava, I’m sorry.”
“I-I didn’t even want to kill him… I would never kill anyone. I was honestly thinking of just offing myself, I don’t know what drove me to administer that laced insulin but it wasn’t just my disorder. I was sick, not evil; tell me you believe that, please?”
“I don’t know who you were when you were living but I believe you,” he answered, “I believe you because this hospital is not kind. It does things… it messes with you.”
“The shadow people?” Ava hated to even bring them up out of fear of them breathing down her neck. She felt their eyes track her every move, following her no matter where she turned.
“Them,” Jason shook his head, “For elusive beings they certainly know how to make themselves known.”
“There’s something about them that I don’t like. What, I don’t know but I don’t like not knowing.”
“There isn’t much to like. None of us know why they’re here or what power the really have, just that they’re in charge.”
“So you don’t even know what you’re warning me against?”
“I just don’t want to see you disappear,” he answered cryptically, “As much as you hate being stuck here, letting the hospital take you completely is a million times worse.”

Nothing to Worry About
Pairing: Kelly Severide x (female) Reader
Requested?: Yes
Word Count: 2311
Author’s Note: I’m pretty sure I’ve said it before, but I love getting requests for Kelly.
Trigger Warning(s): Implied sex, implied consumption of alcohol, nervousness, long distance relationship, implied hooking up/casual relationship
Disclaimer: I don’t owe nor am I affiliated with any of the Chicago shows, I just like to play with the characters
Summary: Kelly has been dating a doctor from out of town for a while now, well when she gets a job at Gaffney, Kelly finally introduces her to everyone.
Y/N = Your Name
Y/LN = Your Last Name
Tumblr media
You met Kelly when you were in Chicago for some doctor’s convention thing that you hadn’t been too keen on going to in the first place, so you ditched and went exploring.
At first you weren’t going to give him the time of day. His entire persona screamed player and you weren’t the kind of woman to fall for the game.
But then you decided why not have a little fun while you were in Chicago, so you let the cute firefighter take you home.
You didn’t know what it was, but for some reason the two of you were just drawn to each other after that night. Before you left he had asked for your number, and that began a somewhat casual relationship.
However, casual did not last long because before you knew it, you were starting to really fall for him. And he was starting to fall for you just as hard.
It all came to a boil one night. He paid you a surprise visit at your apartment, having driven hours to get there, only for you to not be home.
You came walking down the hallway an hour later and saw him sitting there, outside your door, waiting for you.
“Kelly?” You asked quietly, confused. “What are you doing here?
He looked up at you, blue eyes locking onto yours. You could tell he was confused and hurt by the conclusions he was drawing. You were dressed nicely and had your hair and makeup done up nicely as well, you looked like you were coming back from a date.
He stood up and went to move past you. “This was a bad idea.”
You stopped him by grabbing onto his arm. “Kelly wait.”
He only partially turned to look at you and shook his head. “Nah, I get it. I’m just a fun time whenever you happen to be in Chicago, a guy you keep on the hook just so you don’t have to be lonely.”
His words cut you deeply, but you knew he was only saying them because of how the situation looked. You shook your head. “It’s not like that.”
“Oh? Then what is it like?” Kelly asked you, and just the tone of his voice showed you how much he was hurting.
“Well it’s not what you think.” You told him. “Can you just come inside so we don’t have to have this conversation in the hallway?”
“No, I think I should just go.” He replied, pulling his arm out of your grasp. Even with how hurt he was, he was still gentle when pulling away from you, he never wanted to hurt you.
“Kelly please.” You begged softly. “I just got done dealing with my family being all dramatic.”
He stopped dead in his tracks and looked at you. “You were…”
“With my family, yeah.” You nodded. “I decided to take them out to dinner and they all decided to be dramatic and make the night horrible.”
Kelly’s face fell into an expression of instant regret and embarrassment. “I...I thought…”
“That I was on a date?” You asked and shook your head.
“And now I feel like an idiot.” Kelly ran a hand over his face and looked down. “I’m sorry.”
You smiled softly and shook your head, taking his hand in yours. “It’s fine, but can we please go inside now? I have extremely nosy neighbors.”
Kelly nodded and let you lead him into your apartment after you unlocked the door.
“I don’t think I can do this anymore.” The words came out of his mouth before he realized how they sounded, it only dawning on him when he saw the look on your face. “I mean how casual it is between us.”
You immediately relaxed and nodded slowly, a soft smile finding its way onto your lips.
He walked over to you. “I know it’s long distance, but I think we could make it work. I mean, we’re already making time for each other as is.”
“Kelly.” You started softly, eyes meeting his. “What are you saying exactly?”
“I want you to be my girlfriend.” Kelly told you, placing his hands on your hips gently. “I’m not interested in seeing any other girls besides you, and I hate the idea that there could be other guys in your life.”
“There aren’t.” You assure him softly. “It’s only you and has been for a long time.”
“So does that mean we’re exclusive?” He asked with a small smile.
You nodded, smiling a bit more. “Most definitely. And yeah, I’ll be your girlfriend.”
After that, you two were completely exclusive and made the whole long distance thing work. You’d either go to see him, or he’d come see you, or you’d meet in the middle somewhere. You made it work.
And then you got offered the position at Gaffney. You immediately called him up.
“Y/N? Everything okay?” Kelly asked, worried because you seldom called him in the middle of the day like this.
“Everything’s fine.” You breathed out, trying to contain your excitement. “I was just offered a position at Gaffney.”
“Here in Chicago?” Kelly asked, surprised.
“Yeah.” You breathed out, then it dawned on you that maybe he wouldn’t want you to move to Chicago, as well as a bunch of other insecurities.
“Are you going to take it?” Kelly asked you.
“I don’t know...do you think I should?” You asked timidly.
Kelly paused. “Do you want to?”
“Do you want me to?”
“This isn’t up to me, Y/N.” Kelly told you, getting a bit frustrated.
“Would you be okay with me living in Chicago?” You asked after a moment.
There was another pause on his end and that sent a pang of fear through you. “Do I want my girl to be living in the same city as me? Of course I do. But I also want you to make sure this is what you want, I don’t want you unhappy.”
Relief flooded you and you smiled wide even though he couldn’t see it. “Then I’m going to take it.”
You could practically hear the smile in his voice when he spoke next. “That’s great. I can’t wait until you’re here.”
And within the next few weeks you were moving. Kelly was excited to introduce you to his friends, but gave you time to settle in. He helped you pack up your previous apartment, and unpack at your new place in Chicago.
You smiled and admired your new place after you had gotten everything situated so that it was just so.
Kelly wrapped his arms around your from behind and placed a few chaste kisses to the crook of your neck and shoulder, causing you to giggle softly.
He smiled at you. “So what do you think of your new place?” He asked you softly, his arms still wound around your midsection.
You turned slightly in his embrace to get a good look at him. “I love it.”
“And Chicago?”
“So far? I love it too.” You smiled at him.
Kelly smiled and looked down briefly, not meeting your eyes as he asked his next question. “Anything else you love?”
“You.” You whispered your response, causing him to look up and finally meet your eyes.
There was a small silence between you and it almost made you panic, but you somehow remained cool on the outside, waiting for him to say something.
“You serious?” He asked softly, his breath catching.
You nodded. “Yeah, I’m serious.” You whispered out again. “I love you Kelly.”
He smiled softly. “I love you too.” He breathed out, a look of relief on his face.
It was about two weeks later that you were finally settled in enough to meet his friends, and you were nervous as hell.
You were still getting ready when Kelly showed up at your place and knocked on the door.
You hurried to pull the door open and greet him. “Hey.” You kissed his cheek. “Just give me a few more minutes and I’ll be ready, promise.”
He could immediately tell you were nervous just by the way you were acting, and grabbed your hand as you went to scurry away. “Hey, babe.” He said softly, pulling you back to him and causing you to look at him.
“Kelly, I gotta get ready.” You told him.
Kelly looked you up and down and raised a brow. “This isn’t ready?”
“I haven’t even started on my makeup.” You protested.
“I don’t really think you need it.” Kelly told you, but let it go. “I just want you to take a breath, okay? They’ll love you.”
You took a deep breath and nodded. “I hope you’re right.”
“I am, trust me.” Kelly told you, kissing your forehead. “Now you can go finish getting ready.”
You smiled and scurried off to the bathroom to do your makeup.
You fidgeted in the car the entire ride to the bar, causing Kelly to place a hand on your leg in an attempt to calm you.
When you finally got to the bar, Kelly led you in with an arm wrapped around your shoulders.
You were met with a few questioning looks from people you’d only heard stories about and you immediately felt awkward, your stomach was in knots. You were well aware that the people you were about to meet were more than coworkers, more than just friends, they were Kelly’s family and that meant you had to make a good impression. You were beyond worried that they wouldn’t like you.
You realized that the questioning looks weren’t directed at you, but at Kelly, causing you to look at him.
He walked over to the group, his arm still around your shoulders. “Everyone, this is Dr. Y/N Y/LN.” He introduced you, and the looks didn’t change. “My girlfriend.”
The questioning looks then turned to a mix of surprise and confusion. A blonde man stepped up. “Girlfriend?”
Kelly nodded to him and you were left confused, had he not told them about you?
“So that’s why you haven’t exactly been friendly with the ladies lately.” Someone commented from behind, you didn’t see who.
“It’s been long distance for a while now and she just moved to Chicago.” Kelly told them.
“Why’s this the first we’re hearing about her?” A man from behind the bar asked.
“I wanted to keep her to myself.” Kelly answered him sarcastically. “I didn’t wanna jinx it, but I don’t think that’s gonna happen.” He looked down at you with a small smile.
“So this is where you’ve been disappearing to?” The blonde man asked.
Kelly nodded to him.
Instead of commenting, he turned to you and offered his hand out to you. “Matt Casey.”
“Ah, the best friend.” You commented, shaking his hand. “It’s nice to meet you.”
Introductions went off without a hitch and you seemed to fit in pretty well with them, and your nervousness from earlier melted away over the course of the night.
You currently sat across from Sylvie Brett, talking to her about different things when the conversation got turned around to you and Kelly.
“So how long have the two of you been together?” She asked you before taking a sip of her drink.
“Well we started out as causal.” You told her. “And that was about a year ago, but a few months in he asked me to be his girlfriend, and we became exclusive. So we’ve officially been dating for nearly eight months.”
“Wow, I didn’t think he had it in him.” Sylvie commented.
You chuckled a bit and played with your drink nervously. “Yeah, I know he’s got a thing with the ladies.”
Sylvie noticed your unease and was quick to try to remedy it. “Hey, he seems pretty serious about you.” She spoke softly.
You looked up. “Then why didn’t he tell anyone about me?”
“You heard him, he said he didn’t wanna jinx it.” She answered, still in the same soft voice.
Your eyes went over to Kelly, he was across the bar talking to Matt and Herrmann about something, and when he noticed you looking at him, he smiled at you. You returned the smile before turning back to Sylvie. “I really hope that’s why.”
She nodded and smiled at you. “It is. He loves you, I can tell by the way he looks at you.”
Your cheeks turned pink as you smiled softly and nodded.
When you got back to your apartment, you sat on the couch and waited for Kelly to sit next to you.
“Alright, go ahead, ask me.” Kelly told you as you leaned into his side.
You raised a brow. “Ask you what?”
“Why I didn’t tell them about you.” Kelly answered, looking down at you.
“Well, why didn’t you?” You asked softly, you didn’t sound upset or hurt, because you wanted to believe what he had said, and what Slyvie had said.
“Because if I had, then they would have wanted to meet you sooner.” Kelly answered you honestly, letting out a small sigh. “And I wasn’t ready.”
You nodded slowly. “But you could’ve told them before we walked into the bar. You could’ve told them when I moved here.”
“I know.” Kelly sighed again, nodding, he knew you had a point.
You looked down at your hands. “Just tell me that the reason you didn’t tell them wasn’t because you aren’t serious about me.” You said quietly.
Kelly turned to get a better look at you. “That’s not why.” He said softly, getting you to look at him by lifting your chin gently with his fingers. “Hey, I love you.”
You smiled softly and nodded. “I love you too, I was just worried.”
He pulled you into his side again and kissed the side of your head. “You’ve got nothing to worry about.” He assured you.

Manga the Week of 6/2/21
SEAN: June’s busting manga out all over. Let’s see what’s fallen in front of us.
Airship has two print releases: Adachi and Shimamura 5 and ROLL OVER AND DIE: I Will Fight for an Ordinary Life with My Love and Cursed Sword! 3. They also have an early digital release of I’m in Love with the Villainess 3.
ASH: Oh, that means I still have some time to catch up before it’s released in print!
SEAN: Cross Infinite World has a new novel, Romance of the Imperial Capital Kotogami: A Tale of Living Alongside Spirits (Teito Kotogami Romantan Kinrо̄ Otome to Oshikake Jūsha), about a young woman living as a caretaker to a bunch of handsome yokai. This certainly sounds like a couple of recent Viz shoujo manga titles…
MICHELLE: Definitely conjures some Demon Prince of Momochi House vibes.
ASH: That it does, and thus intrigues me.
SEAN: J-Novel Club has several new digital releases, as we get The Apothecary Diaries 2, Discommunication’s 7th manga volume, Girls Kingdom 3, Marginal Operation’s 7th manga volume, My Instant Death Ability is So Overpowered, No One in This Other World Stands a Chance Against Me! 5, and The World’s Least Interesting Master Swordsman 6.
J-Novel Club also has print titles. We’ll see By the Grace of the Gods 4, How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom’s 2nd manga omnibus, In Another World with My Smartphone 16, and Marginal Operation 6.
Kodansha sees the print debut of The Summer of You (Kimi wa Natsu no Naka), a BL story about two teenagers loving to hang out and watch movies, and the love that develops between them. The author is also known for The Two Lions, just licensed by Seven Seas, and about 70 billion Gintama doujinshi.
MICHELLE: I’ve been looking forward to this one!
ASH: I wasn’t previously aware of this series, but now that I am, so am I!
SEAN: Also out in print: Chi’s Sweet Adventures 4, The Heroic Legend of Arslan 14, Hitorijime My Hero 10, Rent-a-Girlfriend 6, Sweat and Soap 6, Wave, Listen to Me! 6, Weathering with You 3 (the final volume), and With a Dog AND a Cat, Every Day is Fun 4.
MICHELLE: I need to catch up on Wave, Listen to Me! and With a Dog AND a Cat, Every Day Is Fun; I enjoyed both a lot for very different reasons.
ASH: I’m definitely here for Wave Listen to Me! . I’ve been meaning to give Sweat and Soap a try, too.
SEAN: Kodansha’s digital debut is Ya Boy Kongming (Papiri Koumei), a shonen title from Comic Days about a Three Kingdoms general reborn into modern Japan.
We also get Chihayafuru 26, Girlfriend Girlfriend 3, GTO Paradise Lost 14, My Dearest Self with Malice Aforethought 5, and With the Sheikh in His Harem 2.
MICHELLE: Insert traditional “yay!” for Chihayafuru.
ANNA: Yay! Also I’m so far behind!
SEAN: Seven Seas debuts The Tale of the Outcasts (Nokemono-tachi no Yoru), which ran in Weekly Shonen Sunday. This tale of a young orphan girl and a beast immortal should appeal to fans of Girl from the Other Side and similar titles.
ASH: Oooh, you have my attention.
SEAN: Seven Seas also has New Game! 11, Peter Grill and the Philosopher’s Time 5, Reincarnated As a Sword 6, and the 15th and final volume of Shomin Sample.
Viz debuts Yakuza Lover (Koi to Dangan – Dangerous Lover), a shoujo title from Cheese! spinoff Premium Cheese!. College girl meets yakuza boy, and despite trying to avoid “bad boys” she’s irresistibly drawn to him. Given it’s Cheese!, I suppose this is more in the “shousei” genre – expect a spicy story.
ANNA: I’m stoked for this and Cheese! spinoffs.
SEAN: There’s also a pile of other Viz. Chainsaw Man 5, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba 22, Dragon Ball Super 13, Jujutsu Kaisen 10, My Hero Academia 28, One-Punch Man 22, Seraph of the End 21, Takane & Hana 17, Twin Star Exorcists 22, Vampire Knight: Memories 6, We Never Learn 16, and Yona of the Dawn 30.
MICHELLE: So much good stuff.
ANNA: Indeed.
ASH: A very good Viz week.
SEAN: Yen On has some May remainder titles that got bumped to June: the 10th Haruhi Suzumiya novel in paperback (it’s actually Books 10 and 11 in one big book), High School Prodigies Have It Easy Even in Another World! 4, Overlord 13, and Strike the Blood 18.
Yen Press likewise has a LOT of “this used to be May” titles. We get As Miss Beelzebub Likes 12 (the final volume), Eniale & Dewiela 3 (also a final volume), Happy Sugar Life 9, If Witch, Then Which? 2, IM: Great Priest Imhotep 9, Love of Kill 2, Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun 12, Overlord 13, Shibuya Goldfish 9, Teasing Master Takagi-san 11, The White Cat’s Revenge as Plotted from the Dragon King’s Lap 3, and A Witch’s Love at the End of the World 3 (another final volume).
ASH: Wait, did you say Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun?! Hooray!
SEAN: There’s a lot of series in this list I love to bits. What are you getting?

The Boogeyman was Real
Tumblr media
Photo: Criminal Minds Wiki
Albert Fish was a real life "boogeyman," lurking in the shadows, waiting to snatch and eat children like a character in a horror movie.
Fish was convicted and sentenced to death for kidnapping and killing 10-year-old Grace Budd in Long Island, N.Y. in 1928.
Budd's disappearance remained a mystery until her mother received a gruesome letter in 1934 from her daughter's killer. The killer described how he murdered and cannibalized her daughter in explicit detail.
Tumblr media
Grace Budd, Photo: Wikipedia
Investigators traced the type of paper that the letter was written on to Albert Fish. Fish confessed to the murder of Grace Budd, plus he claimed to have killed and eaten other children. He is suspected of torturing and killing five other children besides Grace Budd. His victims may have ranged in age from 5 to 17.
There is proof that connected Fish to the murders of two boys, 8-year-old Francis X. McDonnell and 4-year-old Billy Gaffney. McDonnell was raped and strangled to death and Gaffney was tortured and cannibalized.
Authorities later found writings by Fish in which he, like with Grace Budd, explicitly described how he killed and consumed Billy Gaffney. A child neighbor of Gaffney's said that he saw "the boogeyman" take the little boy.
Albert Fish grew up in an orphanage in Washington, D.C. An older boy supposedly introduced Fish to fetishistic sexual activity when Fish was only 12-years-old. As Fish grew older, he began engaging in self-flagellation and genital mutilation. He began sticking needles into his genital area, among other acts of self harm.
Fish claimed he began to sexually abuse male children in his late teens and that he worked as a prostitute. He also reportedly tortured a lover for two weeks before cutting the man's penis off. Fish also attacked and stabbed a developmentally disabled boy in 1919 and claimed that he attacked more children throughout the 1920's.
Fish believed that God commanded him to perform these horrific acts against children. Obeying the voice in his head, Fish put a macabre tool kit together of what he referred to as his "implements of hell," which consisted of a knife, saw and meat cleaver.
Fish pleaded insanity for the murder of Grace Budd. However, the prosecution questioned whether or not Fish was insane, stating that many of Fish's predilections, fetishes, etc. where shared by many others who otherwise were well-adjusted, law-abiding citizens.
The court found Fish to be legally sane and he was sentenced to die in the electric chair. Albert Fish was executed by the State of New York on January 16, 1936.

Babel Chapter 3. Seven
Seven years for him to prove it. To prove that he, a poor boy from Gaffney can do it.
The Hale-Underwood wedding
https://archiveofourown.org/works/19241746
or continue here
drop the stardust from your shoulders
stand besides me
in the summer rain
until the rivers run upstream
.:.:.
3rd of September dawns on them faster than they thought. The ever cooling nights make summer seem like a far away memory tucked somewhere in the back of their heads. Short were the summer nights and short was the journey from one glance to love. She opens her eyes in a foreign room. Flowers on the tapestry coil in the same way as her anxiousness and happiness swirl inside her chest. Warm light showers her as she sits on the neatly made half of the bed in solitude, soaking up the slowly rising sun.
It’s a tradition that the groom doesn’t get to see the bride the day before the wedding, so her mother has made her stay the night in a smaller suite in their fancy hotel. Well as fancy as a small town like Gaffney can get. Her mother has arranged everything she could get her greedy little hands on. If she doesn’t get to sell her daughter out for the highest bidder like a broodmare, she is going to make sure to leave her fingerprints everywhere. After all the wedding should reflect the stature of the Hales. For a month she has had to live under her mother’s cold eyes judging and picking her apart. It had reminded Claire of her younger years, struggling to grow under her mother’s iron fist. But Elizabeth Hale is not there to watch her daughter as she sneaks off from her suite like she used to sneak out from her room in the dead of the night.
Fresh cool air and morning dew welcomes her outside. She misses Boston already. The colder temperature is suited better for her compared to the burning hotness of the southern summer. The shop’s door clinks as Claire slides in in the early hour of the morning. The shop is a mix of scents varying from different chemicals to the floral scents of the hair products. Dorothea greets her in with a giddy smile motioning for her to sit down on a cozy looking leather chair.
‘’You already look like a princess!’’ Dorothea gasps romantically as she throws the white cover over Claire’s shoulders. White fabric falling like a veil over her, covering her twitching hands. Claire ignores Dorothea’s compliments as she scrutinizes her dark under eyes closely through the mirror, exhaling slowly as Dorothea starts to comb her fingers through Claire’s thick golden hair, untangling the mess. Maybe she can do some magic on her face later with the make up.
Dorothea starts working on her as she parts her hair lifting up the curtain that now covers her whole back. The heavy shadow she has learned to hide behind. Is this petulant act of rebellion against her mother? Hasn’t she mentally grown at all from those far away days? Maybe it’s her asserting herself. It’s my body, my decision. It’s me. As Dorothea’s fingers run through her now silky smooth hair Claire voices: ‘’I’ve made the decision. I want you to cut it here.’’
.:.:.
Frank doesn’t think he’s ever been this nervous. He keeps walking in circles in the backroom of the church unable to sit down and just wait. Patience has never been one of his strongest suits. He can feel the cold stone wearing out underneath his soles. So many questions are clouding his head, stopping any relevant thought trying to pass through. Will Claire be there? Would she break her promise, abandon him like this, on their wedding day without a word? He hates to be kept in the dark, waiting and useless.
She definitely might. Her mother may have talked her over. Twisted Claire’s head in the same way Elizabeth Hale has managed to crawl under his skin on this past few weeks. He can finally understand the pressure of the shadow of Elizabeth hovering over Claire.
Sweat is beginning to gather on his brow from his nervous pacing and the still heavy autumn air weighting down on him. How fitting that he is a sinner sweating in a church. How could he have thought that a woman with Claire’s stature would marry a dirt poor farm boy from south with nothing in his name. There certainly isn’t a lack of competition for her hand. She could have chosen anyone. An hour before the wedding he stands there in his perfectly tailored white suit and he feels like a fraud. He’s ashamed of luring Claire into this mess and more afraid that she has come to the same realization of him being a social climber. That he is not worthy of her. He can’t help the devil on his shoulder whispering these thoughts into his ears heightening his sense of uncertainty. Making him ready to run off from the venue.
Creaking of the door interrupts Frank’s manic pacing making his heart leap. The door reveals Charles Hale wearing a stylish navy suit and understanding smile on his face. ‘’Don’t worry about Elizabeth she can be a bit prickly when she’s nervous. She’ll be busy soon enough as the guests arrive. She’s a tough woman. You’ll have to give her some time to soften up but she’ll come along.’’ He adds with a chuckle: ‘’Eventually.’’
Even though Charles Hale’s aura is warm and welcoming Frank can only get a nervous laugh out of himself. He is a proud and intelligent business man. Frank only has respect for him. Frank’s palms are sweaty as he crosses his fingers together, trying his best to seem calm and collected: ‘’Well I can tell that Claire has taken some after her mother.’’
Charles Hale can’t help but smile at the fact. No matter how old Claire is, she will always be his little girl laughing wholeheartedly while riding Red on their back yard. With age she has become more like Elizabeth, and there is more Elizabeth in Claire than Claire would like to admit.
‘’Even though Elizabeth’s been hard on her, she loves Claire more than anything. She’s the most precious thing in our entire lives. She just wants what’s best for her. As do I.’’ Charles looks at Frank with understanding smile, trying to ease him down from his worries.
‘’Claire is the only family I have besides my mother. And I love her more than my words can express.’’ Frank confesses fiddling with this heavy coppery class ring. He doesn’t want to reveal anything about his bastard of a father. The heavy class ring on his hand continues to remind him of his salvation, the Sentinel. His escape from the hell his mother and him had to live in. Soon the heavy ring will get a brother on his bare ring finger. A reminder of his bright future.
Charles Hale has been watching him closely the whole time since he arrived to Gaffney a week ago: ‘’I can see that. And that’s why I’m letting you marry Claire. You would do anything for her.’’ Silence falls over the pair. They both listen to the echoing voices coming from the church.
Charles clears his voice attracting Frank’s attention back to him: ‘’I’m willing to support you and your ambitions for congress. Whatever it is that you need, you’ll have it. As long as you make Claire happy.’’
Frank is about to deny his more than generous offering before he continues:
‘’Claire’s happiness and wellbeing is the most important thing for me. From now on it’s going to be your top priority too. Don’t let me down son.’’
.:.:.
There are thousands of butterflies stuck in Francis’ stomach flying in a circle, daring to rise up to his throat. Deep booming of the church bells signal her arrival and when the wooden doors reveal the light of his life, the butterflies are set free. Days of waiting have brought them here. He thought there wouldn’t be a feeling to match it, when he first time laid his eyes on her three years ago in that garden. How could he have been so wrong. Her approaching figure knocks his breath away. He forgets all of the insecurities clawing at him from before, as she walks towards him down the aisle. White light pours inside the church from the open doors making her skin glow, creating a halo over her. His angel.
He believed that she couldn’t be anymore radiant but there she stands on red velvet covered by elegant white dress that drapes over the curves of her body in rivers of silk. With her head held high she looks like a Greek goddess, flown to the ground from the Olympus. Her golden hair wrapped up in a simple sleek updo away from her face bares her tall neck and sharp clavicles. Her steps are measured and graceful as she slowly glides towards him accompanied by her father. Both of them look statuesque. Rays of sun through the stained glass windows shower her in a spectrum of colours, breathing life into her.
Their eyes lock from afar. The crowd fades away as she slowly makes her way closer to him. As she nears him, he make out little crystals of happiness in the bright blues of her eyes. Their brilliant shine is only competed by the diamonds sparkling on the decollete of her haute couture dress, dripping down her chest like the tears that have fallen down her cheeks or the cold spring rain that washed down on them. When he sees Claire’s eyes beaming with happiness instead of tears, he dares to finally inhale.
The velvet carpet leading to Francis feels endless. Even the pipe organ can’t cover her heartbeat pounding in her ears. If she didn’t know any better, she would be sure that the whole affair could see her heart daring to leap out of her chest. Fresh flowers, her favourite, are tightly clutched on her hands, stopping her from fidgeting with her nails. She holds the bouquet tight in her fingers, like her life would depend on the blooms. Green of the leaves stand out against the stark white flowers. Claire can smell the intoxicating scent coming from the flowers.
White roses, lilies, tulips and gardenias.
Innocence, magnificence, everlasting love and clarity.
Claire’s sharp heels sink into the plush carpet digging deep as they drift closer to the altar. Silence following her measured footsteps instead of the powerful clicks she’s so used to hearing. She doesn’t even dare to look at her father, standing proud besides her, guiding her forward. Claire hopes mother can’t see her legs shake through the silk drapes of her dress.  As she dares to tear her eyes away from the endless sea of red before her, she is faced with the fiery burn of his brown eyes.
He can’t recall anything about the ceremony. Later this all will feel like a dream. They hadn’t written their own vows, for they already made one for each other in whispers while covering their bodies in kisses. There were no rings to bind them, only their hushed words in the setting sun. He can only breathe her in while pretending to listen to the priest. She makes him smile as a sly smirk plays on the corners of her rosy lips. There’s no hesitation on her face, even though from up close he can see her racing heart from the hollow in her neck. And as they vow to be with each other in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, he has drowned in her eyes. Whatever she desires from him next is granted. Blue of her irises hypnotize him lulling him into a deep sense of security. Compared to the bright blues of her eyes the brilliant autumn sky looks like lead.
Francis’ hand feels terribly hot in hers as a circle of diamonds is slipped around her ring finger. It’s a perfect fit for her slender hand. As the ring is secured in her finger, Francis squeezes her hand in his to offer her comfort as the priest pronounces them husband and wife. His lips feel like fire against hers as they bodies close together. Their lips tenderly brush against each other in a modest sweet kiss appropriate for the moment. She keeps her eyes closed for a second breathing against his lips before they turn to face the cheering crowd.
Claire Underwood
.:.:.
The after party is all sucking up to relatives and trying to exchange pleasantries. Francis feels comfortable in these situations, where he gets to charm his way through the room impressing guests, family and friends with his wit and quick brain. Claire has consciously pulled back from the big crowd as she’s focused on playing the perfect demure bride. A wallflower.
After everyone on the venue has fallen in love with Francis, they finally make it back to their own house. Birds are chirping in the nearby trees as the pair takes in the view of their home. The sapling they planted over a year ago has grown so much, showing how much time had passed. Her heels click against the stone as the pair sways together to the soft hums of Francis’ voice. They are going to build a home here for them, together. On the pavement he sweeps her in his arms in a billow of light blue silk. Claire squeaks from the surprise wrapping her hands tightly around Francis. He carries her carefully over the foyer like the tradition. After the initial shock, it makes Claire scoff against his chest. He stops her eye roll by smacking a wet kiss on her cheek.
‘’You can let me down already. I think I’m clear to walk on my own now.’’ Claire voices as she lets go of Francis’ neck. He gingerly leans forward to let her down on her feet. As she’s safely back on the floor, they stop to stand still in the silence of their own house. They take in the still bare living room with the limited furniture they have. The house is decorated with neutral colours. Its white walls are still devoid of any memories.
‘’Too clear I say. You should have drank more of that great champagne.’’Frank jokes breaking the silence as he starts to undo the bow on his neck. Claire laughs at the mental image before opening the scene for him: ‘’Imagine mother’s face seeing her darling little girl making a scene in her own wedding. It would be the scandal of the year for her.’’
Frank would love nothing more than to see the outraged face of Elizabeth Hale scolding very drunk Claire. ‘’Every family needs that one drunk relative who spices up the utterly boring parties and family fairs.’’
‘’You know she’s already based a bet on when we will divorce.’’ Claire’s voice has taken a more serious tone as she frees her aching feet from the silvery high heels.
‘’I hope she’s ready to be disappointed. She’ll see that I’m never going to let you go.’’ He closes his arms on her embracing her as she rests her head on his strong shoulder. His words sound as scary as they did years ago.
Slowly they move to their bedroom in the back of the house. Jewels are placed in a leather box on her dresser as she removes the heavy diamonds from her ears. He drapes his suit carefully on a hanger and lays down on the edge of their mattress on the floor. Light panels are lined up straight across the ceiling. Frank turns his eyes away from the panels as she slowly drops the simple yet classic reception dress from her shoulders revealing white lace underneath. His mouth goes dry the second time today from the sight of her. It hypocritical. How she can look so innocent and yet so seductive in her white underthings.
He sits up to the edge of the mattress motioning for her to move closer to him. Their eyes lock as he slowly kisses down her chest. His lips travel over the hardening nubs of her breasts. The lacy dream snaps open from his fingers, baring her breasts to his hungry mouth. Leaving her to shiver in her white lace panties and a garter belt. Moan escapes her rosy lips from the pleasure as his mouth coaxes more small gasps of air out of her.
When Francis moves to caress her nipples with his nimble fingers, she’s free to lift her hands up to her hair. She carelessly pulls couple of pins out of her hair. Finally her hands find the rigged edge of the jeweled comb from the back of her hair. She pulls it up and out, blonde silk sliding through the teeth of the comb, letting her hair down. Instead of a blonde mane falling down her back like a waterfall, her blonde hair swishes on her shoulders. Her breasts left bare without the hair hiding her body from his hungry gaze.
‘’You cut it.’’ His statement cracks the silence. His rough fingers caress the blunt edges of her freshly cut hair barely touching her shoulders. Intrigued by the change in her. He can’t help but be surprised by the fact, that he had been so focused on her perfect face and body that he hadn’t even noticed her missing bun of hair.
Her face looks sharper than before. Her jawline ready to cut iron. His fingers move to her jaw as he traces the shape of her face. Her striking features could be sculpted from marble by one of the masters. Her icy eyes follow the movement in his as he continues to caress her face in his hands while he takes her in. Claire nibbles nervously on her lower lips waiting for his judgement of her reckless behaviour. Instead of harsh words, she’s faced with his smouldering kiss against her pale lips.
‘’You are perfect.’’
He whispers against the side of her mouth before wrapping his hands tightly around her. She follows his strong arms leading her on their bed. Even though she’s perfect, he embraces her like she would be broken. As she breathes to the crook of his neck, he almost squeezes the life out of her like trying to desperately mold their bodies together. Love for him overflows her heart. They make love through the night on their mattress on the floor. His rough fingers dig into her now short hair. Unable to find any purchase from the slippery silk.
.:.:.
The sun is ready to greet them when they stumble on to their patio to smoke. Claire shivers from the chilly morning air, wrapped only in her light cashmere robe. Cold creeps up from her bare feet making her wrap her arms tightly around her middle to look for warmth. Silver lighter snaps to life and with its flame Frank lights up a cigarette for them to share. With every inhale fire consumes the cigarette turning the rest into ashes. After moments of silence, it’s all gone. Claire stumps the cigarette on the ornate glass before leaning on his shoulder.
She admires the view with her head resting against his shoulder. Beautiful soft pinks and oranges rise to the sky with the sun colouring the clouds in their soft hue. Her thoughts are running slow from the fatigue. She’s content to be right here by his side. Sleep and cold is sneaking up her bones making her eyes close involuntarily. Her eyes have closed a dozen times before shivering Claire picks herself up and squeezes his now warm shoulder tightly, before sliding inside from the double doors leaving Frank outside alone in the crisp morning air.
His thoughts run more clear without the warmth of Claire by his side. Yesterday had been all smiles, kisses and rainbows. His mind has stilled from the turmoil and emotion of yesterday as the anxiety of the morning had changed into teeth rotting happiness. With a long exhale he pushes everything away. All of his senses focused solely on the nature surrounding their house. On the scent of the dew gathering on the strands of grass growing on their yard. He can hear the songbirds somewhere in the tall old trees surrounding their estate. As he raises his eyes from the grass he can see the birds take off far away. They spread their wings and leave their trees rising up to the blue sky because it is in their nature to fly.
Autumn winds have always brought the change with them. This is the official start of their first seven years together. Their deal has now begun. He can almost see the congress shining in the distant horizon if he looks far enough. Why seven years, he can’t help but wonder. He has had a year to find out the answer to her riddle. For there are seven treacherous paths to heaven. Seven long halls in the underworld. Seven deadly sins they both have committed and are guilty of. No, that’s not it. Heaven or hell it’s all the same with her.
Seven years for him to prove it. To prove that he, a poor boy from Gaffney can do it. To get into the Congress. Under three years to establish himself in a new light and get everyone to fall in love with him. Claire is a vital part of the plan. Together they’ll represent the American dream. Visions of them ruling the free world run through his brain. One nation, one leader: Underwood. He has placed all of his faith in the future, in them. They are each other’s adulthood, future and absolution. They are each other’s sorrow, happiness and redemption.
They will be made out of each others memories.
Dibbing of the mattress wakes her up from the web of dreams as Francis slowly slides back under the covers. He stays on his side of the mattress letting her alone. In the dark he hadn’t noticed her wide open eyes. For minutes she listens to his irregular breaths steadying and finally calming down. As she waits for the sleep to come, her thoughts drift to the impossible red wine stain on her reception dress. Sun is shining on the sky when sleep is about to claim her. She closes her eyes besides Francis, not being able to feel the weight of his ring around her finger anymore.

CHICAGO MED | Two Halves Make A Whole
[Prologue - Setting the Scene]
[Chapter List] [Part One]
(Starting Season One Episode One)
(This series will follow the series, starting 1x01 and roughly sticking to the timeline and events of the Chicago Med with some divergence from canon to incorporate the original character and events I’ve included to involve them.)
Chicago Med: Connor Rhodes x Original Female Character

OTHER NOTES:
Considering this film is set not long after season seven ended, it’s kinda weird that Gee has apparently gone from his newly-appointed Captainship to campaigning for Mayor in that time. I mean, I’m not surprised that he would be bored out of his mind in Property Crimes, but this is quite the sudden leap for a guy who never expressed a desire or inclination for a political career.
The old credit sequence is back! Wouldn’t have been right to finish without it.
SPEAKING OF OLD THINGS THAT ARE BACK:
Tumblr media
Forget about Gee’s career shift being weird: what the heck with fucking GHARTY being Homicide’s shift commander now? Remember four years ago in-show, when he was introduced as a cowardly derelict-in-his-duties uniform officer just trying to make it to his pension (only a few months off at that time)? How does that guy make it to Lieutenant in four years? Seems fucking ridiculous.
Mike Giardello going on a rampage beating the shit out of people is objectively uncool, but the decision to have Mike Kellerman tagging along watching him while casually snacking makes the whole sequence hilarious.
It’s been so many hours since Gee was shot, where the heck are his other kids, huh? I feel like they’re conveniently pretending they don’t exist so that they can focus on making his bond with Mike seem especially ~profound~. It’s too late in the game for the father/son Ultimate Bond cliche, y’all.
Why the fuck Gharty talking about putting up with being a ‘stooge’ in order to get off the street, instead of just taking that Goddamn retirement? What a tiresome man. I can’t believe we wasted literally any scenes at all on giving him a weak excuse for a subplot-esque thing, when we’ve got all of these other great characters running around getting about three spoken lines and zero functional purpose. Urgh.
Bayliss confessing to the Ryland murder to Pembleton is a great scene, but it feels out of place in the film, and disingenuous as a plot development for the characters - considering it’s the last development they ever get, I really don’t think it’s a meaningful conclusion (individually or as a partnership), and it takes a mainstay of the series at its best - the writing, acting, and chemistry that made Pembleton and Bayliss the show’s flagship team - and perverts it with the kind of dramatic contrivance that was a mainstay of the series at its worst.
Tumblr media
Lewis just gotta bring up Bayliss’ sexuality, coz he’s a jerk.
The afterlife scene is super weird and not a strong ending for the entire series in the slightest (the dialogue there feels especially stilted), but I am delighted that they took the excuse to include Crosetti and Felton, and complete the set by getting every single major character from the series back again, living and dead.
Tumblr media
I mean, yes, I am delighted that I got to see EVERYONE one last time, but it made for a wildly overstuffed hour-and-a-half film, and almost none of those characters were used to meaningful effect. Essentially, having the entire cast back is a gimmick - and a gimmick that I love - but consequently the plot has no idea what to do with itself, characters drift in and out of it and mostly achieve nothing more than just physically being there for the sake of it, and thus there’s almost no building of emotional resonance or even the natural tension which should arise from having our beloved shift commander shot. More than anything, this feels like an excuse to bring Bayliss and Pembleton together one last time, and I certainly understand that temptation, but it’s a bad move in terms of actually telling the story of the film (which involves thirty-six other named and speaking characters who are not Bayliss and Pembleton, lest we forget).
Additionally, the movie is dotted with useless extras that have nothing to do with the core narrative and only serve to waste vital time which could have been better invested giving one of the many underused characters something to do (the pointlessness of Detective Hall, who was not part of the original series and has no impact upon this film now, is chief in my mind on this score - adding drama by having the shooter in the hospital was also a time-waster), but then again, even the scenes which DID use our old characters were largely red herrings that could be excised from the film completely without altering the story at all. In some cases, that really would have been an improvement, since the movie doesn’t even pretend to treat Little Gee’s rampage as anything other than a pointless dead end, nor Munch and Bolander’s visit to the African Revival Movement, Sheppard and Lewis’ interview with the white supremacist (who was never part of the original series either), or Howard and Falsone’s visit to the widow Desassi. All of these scenes exist purely so that those other characters can do One Single Thing as if it will magically legitimise their presence, while Bayliss and Pembleton unsurprisingly take up the bulk of screen time and are the only ones who uncover anything useful (seriously, they’re even the ones who notice the gunsmoke on the video, even though Ballard and Stivers were assigned to review the footage. Fucking script couldn’t even give some other characters just one genuinely useful thing to do in all this useless mess).
Altogether, the whole thing feels massively under-cooked as a story in its own right, and it has nothing to say about the show, its legacy, what it meant or why it existed in the first place. Homicide was never about Al Giardello’s command, any more than it was about Bayliss and Pembleton’s partnership. Then again, this movie isn’t really about those things either, they’re just the only aspects it manages to carve out with anything close to clarity. Ultimately, I’m not so sure this movie was about anything.

Absolutely Fabulous: 18 Fab Facts You Probably Never Knew About The Iconic Comedy
Tumblr media
This year marks three whole decades since Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone burst onto our screens in a Bolly-drenched, drug-fuelled blaze of ridiculousness in Absolutely Fabulous.
The BBC sitcom followed the antics of PR guru Eddy and fashion magazine editor Patsy, sending up the industry and the colourful characters that inhabited it.
Ab Fab originally spawned three series and a special between 1992 and 1996, before subsequent revivals in 2001 and 2012, with a big-screen outing seemingly serving as a swan song for the outrageous duo, played sublimely by creator Jennifer Saunders and co-star Joanna Lumley.
Tumblr media
Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders as Patsy and Eddy in Absolutely Fabulous
There’s never any shortage of cries for Jennifer to resurrect Eddy and Patsy, and as we approach Ab Fab’s 30th anniversary later this year, speculation is bound to intensify as to whether the comedian has something up her Lacroix sleeve.
As we wait patiently to find out, we’re continuing our celebration of nostalgic TV in our Rewind To The 90s series with 18 surprising facts about Ab Fab you probably won’t have known...
1. Ab Fab started life as a French & Saunders sketch
dailymotion
Absolutely Fabulous was first conceived after Jennifer and Dawn devised a sketch for their show French & Saunders called Modern Mother and Daughter.
The skit aired in 1990, and featured the characters that would later become known as Eddy and Saffy – although Dawn played the original “Saffy”.
2. There was originally some concern that the show might be too London-centric for everyone to get it
Ab Fab producer Jon Plowman – who later became the BBC’s head of comedy – said that when they started work on the show, there was concern that “an audience outside the square mile of Soho would not know what this was about”, he told the LA Times in 1994.
3. It originally started out on BBC Two, before being promoted to the main channel
Tumblr media

According to the LA Times, the BBC originally hoped the show would find a modest cult following, but it proved such a hit with critics and viewers that it was promoted from BBC Two to BBC One for its second series.
“Maybe one of the things about comedy is that if you set out to make something of huge mass appeal, you’re less likely to make something that really catches fire,” Jon Plowman said.
4. The show proved to be a difficult sell in the US, however
A number of the big networks turned down the chance to show Ab Fab in the early 90s, with one TV boss telling Plowman that Eddy and Patsy were not very good “role models.”
Plowman said he was repeatedly told that execs thought the show was “wonderful, but we could never show it”.
The show was eventually picked up by Comedy Central in 1994.
“As soon as we saw it, we knew it was absolutely right for us,” Comedy Central’s senior vice president of programming at the time Mitch Semel said. “For us, it’s dead on target.”
5. Two attempts to make a local US version failed
In the 90s, Roseanne Barr put the wheels in motion to produce a US version of Ab Fab, which would have starred Carrie Fisher and Barbara Carrera as Eddy and Patsy, but it never came to fruition.
In 2008, another attempt was made with Kathryn Hahn and Kristen Johnston set to play the lead roles, with Zosia Mamet (aka Shoshanna from Girls) as Saffy, but Fox passed on commissioning a full series.
6. Eddy and Patsy did appear on an episode of Rosanne’s comedy, though
dailymotion
After Rosanne’s planned adaptation of Ab Fab did not work out, Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley appeared as their characters in an episode of the US star’s hit sitcom in 1996.
Fellow Ab Fab star Mo Gaffney also appeared in the episode, but did not play her character Bo.
The episode saw Roseanne, Jackie, and Nancy visit New York City’s Upper West Side, where they mingled with celebrities and were invited to Martha’s Vineyard.
7. Bananarama was a huge inspiration for Ab Fab
Tumblr media
Jennifer and comedy partner Dawn French with Bananarama in 2017
Jennifer spent a lot of time with the 80s pop group in their heyday, describing having “some of the best nights of my life” with them.
She told Caitlin Moran during a Radio 4 interview: “I got a lot of gags from Bananarama because they were big vodka drinkers... when I started doing Ab Fab, I remembered all of the falls that I saw Bananarama do.
“I once saw one of them coming out of a cab bottom first and hitting the road, and I thought ‘that’s class’.”
8. PR exec Lynne Franks was also a rumoured influence for Eddy’s character
Tumblr media
Lynne Franks pictured in 2004
Jennifer has long cited publicist Lynne Franks as someone she based the character of Eddy on.
When the show was originally on air, Lynne was rather displeased about her link to the show, but in 2018, she said that it no longer “upsets as much as it used to”.
Lynne, who appeared as a contestant on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! in 2007, told the BBC: “It is a very funny programme and I love it but it can get a little bit tedious when it gets mentioned every time.
“If it creates an interest in me and I can then talk about things I really care about, then it is a really useful and helpful tool.”
9. Eddy Monsoon is named after Jennifer’s husband Adrian Edmondson
Tumblr media
Jennifer Saunders and Adrian Edmondson in 1989
It is a play on his name that he used in an episode of Channel 4 show Comic Strip Presents in 1984, in which Jennifer also starred.
10. Adrian can also be heard on the show’s theme tune
youtube
Wheels On Fire was originally recorded by Bob Dylan in 1967, before Julie Driscoll recorded a cover a year later.
Adrian’s vocal was added to a reworking of Julie’s version, appearing alongside her on the theme. It was remixed when the show returned for a fourth season in 2001, with Julie credited under the surname Tippetts.
Kylie Minogue also recorded a cover as the soundtrack to the 2015 film.
11. Jennifer was frightened by Julia Sawalha in her original audition
Tumblr media
June Whitfield, Jennifer Saunders and Julia Sawalha on set in 1992
In the 2001 series companion book Continuity, Jennifer said that they had already seen quite a few people for the role of Eddy’s daughter, but none were right – but then Julia auditioned.
“She didn’t try to make Saffy funny,” Jennifer explained. “I found her quite frightening to read with because she was so serious I couldn’t look her in the eye.”
12. There is only 10 years between Jennifer and on-screen daughter Julia
Tumblr media
Julia Sawalha (left) and Jennifer Saunders in a scene from episode Fat in 1992
When Ab Fab started, Eddy was just turning 40, while Saffy was 16, but in actuality, Jennifer was 34 and Julia was 24.
13. Joanna Lumley was cast after appearing on Ruby Wax’s sketch show
youtube
During the sketch on a 1991 episode of The Full Wax, Joanna – who was known for her roles in the likes of The Avengers – showed a different side when she sent herself up as a drunk, drug-taking has-been, which cast her in a new light.
14. Joanna used her own hair to create Pasty’s beehive hairstyle
Tumblr media
In a promo photo for the show
Pasty’s barnet is nearly as iconic as the woman herself, and it was all Joanna’s own hair used to create it.
Jennifer compared it to “the Tardis” from Doctor Who, writing in Companion: “When it’s down and normal it looks perfectly safe, but once a hairdresser gets inside and whips it up, you realise the extraordinary volume.”
15. Jane Horrocks actually auditioned to play Saffy
Tumblr media
Jane Horrocks pictured in 1992
Jane tried out for the part of Eddy’s daughter, but Jennifer instead cast her as the character’s assistant Bubble instead.
In the 2001 series companion book Continuity, Jennifer said: “She looked nothing like me and was frankly too old, even though she’s not as ancient as Dawn French… But Jane is so talented and funny and attractive that we immediately offered her Bubble.”
16. Bubble was originally conceived as a very different character
Tumblr media
Jane was cast as Eddy's assistant Bubble after auditioning as Saffy
Jennifer wrote in Continuity: “When I first wrote Bubble, I had imagined a useless ‘Sloane Ranger’ secretary. A girl so posh but very stupid that she might either become a secretary or do a cordon bleu course or work for a high-profile charity.”
Of how the part changed after Jane’s casting, Jennifer added: “What was upper class eccentricity became bizarre and surreal.
“The costumes which always seemed rather childlike and extreme were always based on the very newest ideas in magazines like i-D. Fashion taken to its limits.”
17. Idris Elba appeared in the show before he was famous
Tumblr media
Idris Elba appeared in the third series of Absolutely Fabulous
The actor is now world famous, but prior to hitting the big time, Idris appeared in the 1995 episode Sex, where he played an escort.
18. Jennifer thought the original finale of the show was “disjointed”
When Jennifer decided to wrap up Ab Fab after three seasons in 1996, she responded to criticism from a newspaper critic who called the last episode “an idea flogged well past its sell-by date”.
In an interview with The Independent, Jennifer said that the episode was “disjointed”, but added: “I just had to get rid of all those jokes I’d always wanted to do. It would have been tragic to look back in 2000 and think, ‘I wish I’d done that’.”
As it turned out, Ab Fab ended up returning for two more series between 2001 and 2004.

Personal Sunshine
Pairing: Connor Rhodes x (female) Reader
Word Count: 2027
Author’s Note: First request for Connor! Woo-hoo! Hope it’s good! I haven’t watched the old episodes of Chicago Med in so long, and I had a hard time finding clips when I was writing this, so Cornelius might be OOC and I apologize for that. I also only loosely based it on the episode, because like I said, it’s been a while since I’ve seen it.
Trigger Warning(s): Misogynistic comments, argument, bad words
Disclaimer: I don’t owe nor am I affiliated with any of the Chicago shows, I just like to play with the characters
Summary: Connor and Y/N are happily married and have been for awhile. They’re both working at Gaffney when one of his father’s employee’s comes in after getting injured. This wouldn’t really be that big of a problem if Cornelius wasn’t a complete ass to his son and daughter in law.
Y/N = Your Name
Tumblr media
You and Conner met while you were both still in med school, it started out as a friendship but quickly turned into something more. You dated throughout school and got married when you were going through residency.
Connor admired you, although you didn’t really know why.
He admired how kind and thoughtful you always were, even when you were exhausted you still managed to smile and be friendly. He admired how smart you were, and how you were able to think on your feet faster than any other doctor he knew. He admired how you gave your all to save every patient you could, and how you didn’t stop fighting for them until the very last minute, even when everyone else was ready to throw in the towel.
He admired and loved everything about you, every strength you had, every weakness, every virtue and every flaw. He loved all your quirks. The little dance you do when you’re cooking and think no one is looking. How you sing or hum along to your favorite songs. How you get excited over the little things in life, how your eyes light up when you tell him about your hobbies or about something new you just learned, or how talkative you get when telling him about your last obsession.
He loved every little thing about you, but couldn’t figure out what you ever saw in him.
It was something that played through his mind the entire time you were dating, and had almost kept him from ever asking you out in the first place. And this little worry still nags him even though you’ve been married for a few years now. It’s not as bad as it used to be, but it still floats around in the back of his mind waiting for the slightest little thing to make him second guess everything.
You had tried to assure him, time and time again, that you loved him and that you thought he was amazing, but your words fell on deaf ears most of the time. You blamed it on his upbringing. Although you had never met his dad, the little things that Connor actually told you made your heart ache and a disdain form for the man.
That was something you never brought up, meeting his dad. It wasn’t because you didn’t love Connor, it was the opposite in fact. You loved him so much that you didn’t want to put him in the position, so you never really talked about his dad.
That is until Connor walked into the break room, steaming.
You could feel how upset he was, and even if he didn’t look upset, which he did, you always had a way of knowing. You watched him carefully, walking over to him slowly. “Babe? What’s wrong?” You asked him gently.
His eyes found yours and immediately his demeanor softened and he let out something that was between an exasperated sigh and a groan. “My father is here.” He answered briskly.
You frowned in confusion. “Why? Is he hurt or something?”
“No one of his employees is and he doesn’t want to cover the operation.” Connor answered in the same tone, with an annoyance that wasn’t aimed at you in the slightest, just at the situation. He pinched the bridge of his nose and closed his eyes, leaning his head back.
“Oh.” You barely said, walking over to him and running your hands up and down his biceps slowly, trying to calm him. “Is there anything I can do to help?”
His eyes found yours and you could tell that he was relaxing a bit, he gave you a small, tight smile and shook his head. “You’re doing exactly everything you can do.” He told you, the annoyance fading from his voice.
You sighed a bit and nodded. “Wish there was more I could do.” You told him.
He shook his head. “I really don’t want you near this.” He told you. “I don’t want you anywhere near him.” He clarified.
You nodded, your eyes fixed on his even though he wasn’t looking directly at you at the moment. “I’ll try to keep my distance.” You assured him. “Shouldn’t be too big of a problem, I have back to back surgeries today.”
“Well sounds like you’re in for a fun day.” Connor replied, a genuine smile forming.
“Yeah sure.” You laughed a bit, glad you were able to make him feel even slightly better.
Connor kissed your forehead tenderly before looking at you and sighing. “I have to go and try to deal with him. Good luck on your surgeries.”
You smiled gently at him. “Good luck with your dad.” You gently squeezed his arm as he pulled away from you.
You finished up your first surgery a bit early that scheduled, so that left you with enough time to get some coffee, so you did just that. However, on your way back you decided to detour through the ED to check on Connor. You were halfway through the waiting room when you were stopped by an older man.
It didn’t even dawn on you that this man could be Connor’s dad. Maybe it was because you still had your mind on the surgery you just finished, or maybe it was because you were thinking about the one you were about to start. Or maybe you just didn’t connect the dots between this guy and your husband.
You thought it was incredibly strange that this man would hit on you in the middle of the busy hospital, surrounded by people waiting to hear the status of their sick or injured loved one, but it actually wasn’t the first time. Not that it made you any less uneasy that he hit on you, but coupled with the fact that this man was old enough to be your father, you started to feel incredibly uneasy.
“Now what is a girl like you doing wasting her pretty face working in a hospital?” He had asked you.
You hadn’t even noticed he was talking to you until you turned and saw him staring, waiting for an answer. “Excuse me?”
“I’m sorry, it’s just that you’re so beautiful you could be a model. Or at the very least a trophy wife.” He replied like it was a compliment.
You stared at him in disbelief for a moment before shaking your head. “I beg your pardon, I happen to be one of the best pediatric surgeons, not just in Chicago, but in the Nation.” To say that you were insulted was an understatement.
“Smart girls rarely get guys, sweetheart.” He replied and the way he called you sweetheart made you blood boil. “Guys like pretty girls that don’t challenge them.”
Your eyes narrowed into a glare. “For your information, my husband adores how smart I am.” You replied snidely, unable to maintain your normal happy go lucky personality.
He seemed to be shocked, whether it was by your tone or the revelation that you were married, you weren’t sure. “Oh you’re married?”
You nodded as you tried to calm down, it didn’t look good if you weren’t polite, and if any of your new coworkers saw you upset, they might get worried. You were kinda known around the hospital as the happy girl. Connor called you his own personal sunshine.
“Well he certainly is a lucky guy.” The man replied to you. “Is he a doctor too?”
You nodded again. “Yes, in fact, he is.” You smiled proudly, and that was when you spotted Connor and thought that it was the perfect way to get out of this annoying conversation. “There he is now.” You practically skipped over to him, halting just a bit when you saw the look on his face. “Babe? What’s wrong?” You asked, frowning slightly and tilting your head.
Connor looked at you and his cloudy expression was replaced with what seemed like a tired smile, whether he was actually tired or just exhausted from dealing with rude people, you didn’t know. “Nothing.” He tried to assure you, but you assumed it was still from dealing with his father.
You let it go for a second, wanting to tell him about the guy that hit on you. “Hey, you see that weird old man over there?” You asked quietly, leaning in towards him and discreetly motioning over your shoulder. “He just hit on me in the rudest way ever. Told me I’m too pretty to be a doctor and should be a trophy wife instead.” You huffed out and rolled your eyes, keeping your voice low.
Connor’s eyes trailed over to the man and his cloudy expression returned. “Do me a favor and stay away from him.” He told you, lowering his voice so only you could hear him as he continued to glare over your shoulder.
You gave him a confused look. “I was already planning on it. Why?” You stopped short, a dread settling in your bones that you knew exactly why Connor was asking you to stay away from him.
“That’s my dad.” Connor answered you in the same tone, still not looking at you.
Your eyes widened slightly from the revelation, even though you had already pieced together that, and you were about to say something when you felt someone come up behind you.
“So you got married and didn’t invite me.” Cornelius remarked.
“Yeah, there’s a reason for that.” Connor replied coldly, his body going stiff and his expression hardening.
You turned so that your back was no longer to Cornelius and so that you were beside Connor.
Connor’s arm wrapped around your waist, holding you close to him in an almost protective way.
“Hard to believe a pretty little thing like her would marry you.” Cornelius replied.
You felt Connor inhale sharply, about ready to reply when you butted into the conversation. “Excuse you? What the hell is wrong with you?” You asked, crossing your arms.
Cornelius was taken aback by your sudden outburst.
“You come in here and think you can treat him like that? Well you can’t.” You told him, trying to find the words to say but it was becoming difficult due to how upset you were. “Connor is a great man and a great doctor and I love him so much, there’s not enough words to express how much.”
Connor was even shocked by your sudden outburst, you were usually so polite, even to the rudest people.
You couldn’t find any other words, so you huffed and took Connor’s hand, pulling him away from Cornelius, who was still trying to make sense of the fact that you just stood up to him.
As soon as you were alone, you turned to Connor. “I’m sorry-” You started to apologize but were cut off by his lips on yours, kissing you passionately. You kissed him back, your arms going over his shoulders, draping them around his neck.
His hand rested at the base of your neck, the other on your waist, holding you close to him as he continued to kiss you.
You only pulled back when you needed air. You slowly opened your eyes to look at him, being met with his blue eyes gazing at you with love and adoration.
“Don’t apologize.” He breathed out, a small smile forming on his now puffy lips.
“But...but won’t this cause problems?” You asked him as you felt the worry started to settle in your mind.
Connor shook his head. “I’ll deal with it.” He assured you gently, kissing your lips once more before kissing your forehead. “Don’t worry, sunshine.” He told you before he began to walk away.
You felt your lips quirk up into a small smile and quickly grabbed for his hand. “Hey.” You said, stopping him, and waited until he looked at you to continue. “I love you.”
He smiled at you again. “I love you too.” You watched as he walked away after that, the smile he caused not leaving your face for the rest of the day, despite the fact that you were still incredibly worried about what the repercussions of your little outburst might be.
