Just Like It Was Before from Bandstand is SO GOOD because so much art from that era romanticized the idea of a post war-life and Bandstand takes that and then contrasts it with the gut-wrenching reality that soldiers were coming home from a harrowing and traumatic experience with scars both visible and invisible and with the loss of so many others in the war. It shows how hard everyone's trying but they're just failing because the goal isn't attainable. You can't send boys to battle and expect them to come back the same. It's fair that people just wanted things to go back to normal, but that was never going to happen.

Bandstand Headcanon

Johnny loves the movies. It’s one of the few things he can remember stuff about besides music. He knows the names of a bunch of stars and remembers movie quotes. He annoys the band by constantly quoting movies. He also has the biggest crush on Gene Kelly which him and Julia both gush about and see every new movie with him in it together (also Judy Garland because Johnny is an OG friend of Dorothy).

Me trying to explain Bandstand to anyone: A family isn't always your blood. It isn't just a mother and a father. Sometimes a family is a depressed bisexual war veteran, the widow of his best friend, an alcoholic double bass player who likes Shakespeare, a drummer with memory problems, a gay lawyer who likes checkered trousers, a divorced dad of two who has OCD and a trumpet player with anger issues.

THE EPILOGUE FOR BANDSTAND GOES OVER A SPAN OF AT LEAST FOUR YEARS? HELLO?

The beginning scene takes place a year after the events of the radio contest. We know Act One and the majority of Act Two (everything but the Epilogue) take place in 1945, so that means the Epilogue starts in '46 (see image below).

But we suddenly jump forward FOUR YEARS to not only when The Rainbow Room has opened again, but they've ALREADY PERFORMED THERE?

That's it. That's the post. The band is still together after, like, five+ years. This is fine. This didn't make me almost start crying out of happiness. (<- complete and utter sarcasm.)

Man something that always kills me is that even in the midst of a panic attack/implied flashback Donny notices Davy/Wayne’s defeatist/suicidal remarks and makes a point to encourage them/reach out to them later in right this way (“they’ll say right this way/you’ve been fighting for far too long”)

How each member of the Donny Nova band who knew each other pre-war met (hcs):

Jimmy and Davy

These two I have the least concrete idea on. They’re old friends to me but not like childhood. Maybe they were friends in high school? I think they initially hit it off over music but grew even closer through a shared love of Shakespeare Jimmy mostly for literature reasons and Davy mostly for theater reasons (however through this shared love they learn to appreciate literature/theater more)

Davy and Nick

They met at a gay bar. I feel extremely strongly about this. Maybe they hooked up maybe they didn’t, but they did hit it off and became friends (especially since I think Nick was a little less closed off pre-war) In their initial chats they discovered that they were both musicians and ended up going to a few of each others shows.

Nick and Wayne

I think that they played several gigs together after high school and became friends. While I’d like to imagine they had a very messy situationship in that time I don’t think so, since I personally think Wayne started dating his wife in high school and I don’t think he’d cheat on her. That being said they were most definitely attracted to each other, and began developing feelings for each other (which potentially resulted in a drunken kiss im not sure) When he realized Wayne freaked tf out and started distancing himself from Nick a little, playing less gigs and only spending time with Nick for the sake of playing. Nick was pissed but ultimately forgave him. His feelings did not change, but Wayne’s kind of faded (until the events of bandstand)

Wayne and Johnny

Wayne met Johnny at university, they were in the same class for a semester but Wayne was a senior and Johnny was a sophomore. We know that (according to Geoff Packard) Wayne has a degree in engineering (or some kind of mathematics based degree) and Johnny is exceptionally good with numbers (I got a theory). I like to think that Johnny was getting a mathematics degree and therefore had classes that overlapped with some of Wayne’s. Idgaf that that’s slightly unlikely considering the age/grade gap it’s real to me. I think they became friendly and ended up playing a gig or two together. I think they tried to stay in touch but Wayne became more busy with his family and they never got close. Wayne feels extremely guilty about this after the war and makes an effort to check on him.
