Sochi Olympics 2014 | Aerials. The fingers of God coming down from heavens. Or alien death rays. This is my fav pic from the Olympics. @davidburnettfoto gave me some advice at the beginning of my career - “if you see a crowd of photogs standing around looking for the same picture - go somewhere else.” So I did. I climbed up the slope of the snow covered ramp slipping in the melting ice (it was a warm day). Snow and water and sweat got all over my cameras as I made my way up the steep climb - hoping for a better angle. As my lens frosted over from the melting water, the venue’s stadium lighting began to flare. To flare beautifully. To add another element to the frame. And there were no other photographers in sight. Boy do I LOVE THIS 💕 #repost @davidburnettfoto ・・・ A couple of weeks ago I walked the Veterans Parade route in New York, and stayed with a group of reenactors all dressed in 1918 regalia, both military and civilian. I kind of liked the idea that grown up men and women would put on their utmost century old-style threads, and make their way, very 1919 - like, up 5th Avenue. They finished their walk, then strode down 46th street, and found a wonderful little recessed cafe area on 6th avenue. I was carrying the Aero-Liberator camera, the 4x5 SLR with a fast lens (the Aero Ektar)… and made a couple of frames of them at the end of their jaunt. There is something cool about film, about big formats, about schlepping a big-ass camera in places where other options would be easier. Walter Cunningham, Lunar module pilot, Apollo 7. On the anniversary of the lunar landing, photographer David Burnett captured images of the men and women behind the program, a fraternity that is a terribly tiny. With his 4x5 camera mounted with lens from a 1943 P-38 fighter in hand, Burnet said it was as if they had met an old friend. "As a photographer, I was most interested in trying to simply see what they have become" Burnet wrote, " So much life has passed by. So many lines and forehead creases have been justly earned. Photo: @davidburnettfoto // Last year after a hundred years of majestic presence, a large Cottonwood known as the Balmville Tree (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balmville_Tree) , in Newburgh, had to be cut down. At one point this huge tree was over 125' high, but age caught up with it, and in spite of many attempts to get it back on a healthy track, it was finally taken down last fall. A 10' high stump still remains, along with a few plaques which tell of its storied past. Since then I have been keeping my eye out for something arboresque of a similar nature, and about a month ago while driving along Balmville road, about 1/2 mile from the old "Tree," I saw a stately tree on the edge of the Powelton Golf Club. I have no clue what kind of tree it is, nor even which fairway it represents 150 yards from the green, but it's one of those trees which by its mere presence is both stunning and awe inspiring. The fact that winter stripped it of its leaves gives an even clearer view of how it is formed.
