Wednesday, October 9: Y&T, "Squeeze"

R.I.P. Phil Kennemore (1953-2011)

Earthshaker was a significant recalibration for Y&T, with the shortening of their name signaling that they were entering the ‘80s as a more streamlined, focused and intense force ready to both engage and compete with the emerging metal movement.  And tunes like “Squeeze” ably threaded the needle between hard rock and heavy metal in a manner not dissimilar to what Sammy Hagar was attempting around the same time, but was arguably more effective in its approach.  The track was distinct in that Phil Kennemore handled lead vocals, but otherwise was a brisk and banging statement of intent alongside other Earthshaker standouts like “Hurricane” that was also a better representation of Y&T’s formidable stage prowess than most of their ‘70s output.
