The Hound of the Baskervilles: Three Broken Threads

Data protection was not really a thing back in 1889. However, paper hotel registers would be something filled in by the front desk staff, not the guest. They would contain details of extra charges incurred as well, all stuff generally done by computer, but you can still buy paper copies today. Particularly for the Indian market, where less than half the population have Internet access. These registers are generally mandatory and in some countries, the data will still be passed to the police when it concerns newly arrived foreigners. That's why they ask for your passport.
Newcastle upon Tyne, the one people generally talk about as opposed to Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire, was at the centre of a major coal mining area in North-East England, the Durham and Northumberland coalfields being in close proximity. India’s technology sector is set to experience a hiring boom with job vacancies for artificial intelligence (AI) roles projected to reach 1.2 lakh over the next two years. Following a slowdown in tech hiring, the focus is shifting toward the development of AI. India currently has 4 lakh AI professionals, but the gap between demand and supply is widening, with job requirements expected to reach 6 lakh soon. By 2026, experts predict the number of AI specialists required will hit 1 million, reflecting the deep integration of AI latest technology into industries like healthcare, e-commerce, and manufacturing.
The transition to AI-driven operations is also altering the nature of job vacancies. AI professionals also enjoy higher compensation compared to their traditional tech counterparts. Around 80% of AI-related job vacancies offer premium salaries, with packages 40%-80% higher due to the limited pool of trained talent. “The low availability of experienced AI professionals ensures that artificial intelligence roles will command attractive pay for the next 2-3 years,” noted Krishna Gautam, Business Head of Xpheno.

Proficiency in programming languages like Python, R, Java, or C++ is essential, along with knowledge of AI latest technology such as large language models (LLMs). While the desire to document and preserve memories is not new, Freya argues that the impulse to share them widely with strangers is, to the detriment of future generations. Of course, social media companies have a vested interest in keeping us obsessed with documentation, from Instagram and TikTok, to Goodreads and Letterboxd, to MyFitnessPal and period-tracking apps. Our pleasure-reward centres just can’t keep away from another chance to track and understand ourselves. But the proliferation of information at our fingertips has had the inverse effect on our attention spans, with the cultural trends bending towards speed and spectacle over proper standards of journalism, as Madison Huizinga recently argued. And while the fear of forgetting may be artificially-inflated by the abundance of apps to help us keep track of life under capitalism, those fears are also not entirely baseless. Once our data is digitized, it is both no longer entirely ours, nor is it entirely safe from disappearing completely at the whims of Google or Meta. It’s no longer just a fear of forgetting, then, but a fear of being forgotten as well. No wonder so many of us are trying to be reborn into childhood, to reset our mortality. The pressure to consume and be consumed, to be seen as something worth remembering: a desire which requires being palatable enough for consumption as well.

What is Mars Rover?
A robotic vehicle that investigates the surface of Mars is called a rover. Rovers are long-range, remotely controlled vehicles that gather data and take images while traveling great distances. Six Mars rovers have been successful so far:
In 1997, Sojourner became the first rover to set foot on Mars. During 83 days, it investigated the Ares Vallis region. The twin rovers Spirit (2004) and Opportunity (2004) touched down on Mars in 2004. For many years, they investigated the Gusev Crater and Meridiani Planum, respectively. Opportunity stopped operating in 2018 and Spirit became stuck in 2010.

What shits me is the way my phone number is being linked even if I don't provide it, because that's how google/android works, and I have to fight their system if I don't want my files to be uploaded to computers in foreign lands. The iphone leaks should have been a warning. Celebs suddenly found their nudes being leaked on the black market. How? Because iphone copies your stuff onto what is called THE CLOWWWWWD, which is a obfuscation for their servers. They have copies of whatever they can grab, and they do it without asking, and if you block it, they can switch it on remotely, and you end up pouring over hacks that they are trying to stop through legislation, hacks to stop them arse raping your life. We are slipping into the dystopia of shit, the gradual tofu dreggery of everything. The only hope at the moment is maybe some tech savvy radicals will get a voice in the political arena and speak up about it. I do laugh when I read that the EU actually has some good privacy laws, because otherwise they seem to be far closer to a police state. My phone has an ai. I turn it off. The mandatory 'patch' turns it back on. My phone sends my voice to their ai to be analysed. I turn that off. The mandatory 'patch' turns it back on. I say no. They say ok, we'll do it later. You can keep trying to say no, but one slip of the finger and we take that as a yes, and we harvest your data and sell it off. One of the reasons old people are attacked by scammers is because they can get extensive profiles on likely victims. All this data harvesting is deliberate and harmful, and the companies know it will be used to harm the most vulnerable people in the world, but they don't care. That old lady being swindled out of her life savings because a call centre in India bought gigs of data about her to make up convincing lies, she's not responsible, the companies that harvest us and then sell that are, just as surely as if the post office was making wax prints of our locks and selling them to thugs at the pub. When all of this started, I wanted to avoid a mobile phone because I hated having to be tracked all the time by the government, and yet if I needed help, the government suddenly has no idea where I am. All this stuff is not to benefit us, it's about benefitting a few malicious elites take control over us.
And the most galling thing? Every time they kick, every time they smash a tooth out of our faces, they repeat:
WE ARE HERE TO HELP. STOP STRUGGLING. YOU ARE MAKING IT WORSE.
I don't know I'm not done talking about it. It's insane that I can't just uninstall Edge or Copilot. That websites require my phone number to sign up. That people share their contacts to find their friends on social media.
I wouldn't use an adblocker if ads were just banners on the side funding a website I enjoy using and want to support. Ads pop up invasively and fill my whole screen, I misclick and get warped away to another page just for trying to read an article or get a recipe.
Every app shouldn't be like every other app. Instagram didn't need reels and a shop. TikTok doesn't need a store. Instagram doesn't need to be connected to Facebook. I don't want my apps to do everything, I want a hub for a specific thing, and I'll go to that place accordingly.
I love discord, but so much information gets lost to it. I don't want to join to view things. I want to lurk on forums. I want to be a user who can log in and join a conversation by replying to a thread, even if that conversation was two days ago. I know discord has threads, it's not the same. I don't want to have to verify my account with a phone number. I understand safety and digital concerns, but I'm concerned about information like that with leaks everywhere, even with password managers.
I shouldn't have to pay subscriptions to use services and get locked out of old versions. My old disk copy of photoshop should work. I should want to upgrade eventually because I like photoshop and supporting the business. Adobe is a whole other can of worms here.
Streaming is so splintered across everything. Shows release so fast. Things don't get physical releases. I can't stream a movie I own digitally to friends because the share-screen blocks it, even though I own two digital copies, even though I own a physical copy.
I have an iPod, and I had to install a third party OS to easily put my music on it without having to tangle with iTunes. Spotify bricked hardware I purchased because they were unwillingly to upkeep it. They don't pay their artists. iTunes isn't even iTunes anymore and Apple struggles to upkeep it.
My TV shows me ads on the home screen. My dad lost access to eBook he purchased because they were digital and got revoked by the company distributing them. Hitman 1-3 only runs online most of the time. Flash died and is staying alive because people love it and made efforts to keep it up.
I have to click "not now" and can't click "no". I don't just get emails, they want to text me to purchase things online too. My windows start search bar searches online, not just my computer. Everything is blindly called an app now. Everything wants me to upload to the cloud. These are good tools! But why am I forced to use them! Why am I not allowed to own or control them?
No more!!!!! I love my iPod with so much storage and FLAC files. I love having all my fics on my harddrive. I love having USBs and backups. I love running scripts to gut suck stuff out of my Windows computer I don't want that spies on me. I love having forums. I love sending letters. I love neocities and webpages and webrings. I will not be scanning QR codes. Please hand me a physical menu. If I didn't need a smartphone for work I'd get a "dumb" phone so fast. I want things to have buttons. I want to use a mouse. I want replaceable batteries. I want the right to repair. I grew up online and I won't forget how it was!

The scale of their investment is hard to ignore. In the first half of 2023, tech giants poured $74 billion into capital expenditure. By Q3, that number had jumped to $109 billion. In mid-2024, spending reached $104 billion, a remarkable 47% rise over the same period a year earlier. By Q3, the total hit $171 billion.
If this pattern continues, Q4 might add another $70 billion, bringing the total to a truly staggering $240 billion for the year.

Revenue potential: AI is already proving its value. Microsoft’s AI products are expected to generate $10 billion annually—the fastest-growing segment in the company’s history. Alphabet, meanwhile, uses AI to write over 25% of its new code, streamlining operations.
Amazon is also ramping up, with plans to spend $75 billion on capital expenditure in 2024. Meta’s forecast is not far behind, with estimates between $38 and $40 billion. Across the board, organisations recognise that maintaining their edge in AI requires sustained and significant investment.
Supporting revenue streams
What keeps the massive investments keep on coming is the strength of big tech’s core businesses. Last quarter, Alphabet’s digital advertising machine, which is powered by Google’s search engine, generated $49.39 billion in ad revenue, a 12% year-over-year increase. This as a solid foundation that allows Alphabet to pour resources into building out its AI arsenal without destabilising the bottom line.
Microsoft’s diversified revenue streams are another example. While the company spent $20 billion on AI and cloud infrastructure last quarter, its productivity segment, which includes Office, grew by 12% to $28.3 billion, and its personal computing business, boosted by Xbox and the Activision Blizzard acquisition, grew 17% to $13.2 billion. These successes demonstrate how AI investments can support broader growth strategies.
The financial payoff
Big tech is already seeing the benefits of its heavy spending. Microsoft’s Azure platform has seen substantial growth, with its AI income approaching $6 billion. Amazon’s AI business is growing at triple-digit rates, and Alphabet reported a 34% jump in profits last quarter, with cloud revenue playing a major role.
Meta, while primarily focused on advertising, is leveraging AI to make its platforms more engaging. AI-driven tools, such as improved feeds and search features keep users on its platforms longer, resulting in new revenue growth.

Darshan Hiranandani : Hiranandani Group Unveils Plans for India’s Second Semiconductor Park
In a landmark development for India’s semiconductor industry, the Hiranandani Group, under the leadership of CEO Darshan Hiranandani, has announced plans to establish the country’s second semiconductor park. This ambitious project will be located in the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) region, near Noida, Uttar Pradesh. With this initiative, Hiranandani Group aims to position India as a key player in the global semiconductor supply chain.
The proposed park will follow in the footsteps of the semiconductor and display manufacturing facilities already being set up by Vedanta Limited and Taiwanese company Foxconn at the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
Hiranandani’s semiconductor arm, Tarq Semiconductors Private Limited, has officially applied for permission under the Indian Semiconductor Mission Scheme, submitting an application to both the Central Government and the Uttar Pradesh government. The company has already paid Rs 50 Lakhs in application fees. Once approved by the Centre, the UP state cabinet will allocate land for the project.
At the UP Global Investors Summit in February 2023, Hiranandani Group signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Uttar Pradesh government, committing to invest INR 170 billion in the development of the semiconductor park. As per the MoU, Tarq Semiconductors will set up advanced ATP (Assembly, Testing, and Packaging) plants for semiconductor production, covering three types of production lines: legacy, mature, and complex. The first ATP plant is set to begin in phase one over the next 24 months, with the second and third plants to follow in the second phase, over a similar timeline. The project is expected to create approximately 1,000 jobs.
In a letter to the CEO of YEIDA, Darshan Hiranandani stated that the initial phase of the project will attract an investment of over Rs 25 billion. He further emphasized that Hiranandani Group has seen great success in Uttar Pradesh through its data centre arm, Yotta Data Services Pvt. Ltd., and is now eager to expand its footprint by diving into the semiconductor sector.
This semiconductor park marks a significant milestone in India’s push to become a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing. Supported by initiatives like the Indian Semiconductor Mission, which aims to foster a robust semiconductor ecosystem within the country, the project aligns with India’s ambitions to reduce its dependence on foreign semiconductor imports.
