Dasyurus maculates, better known as the tiger quoll, the spotted-tail quoll, the spotted quoll, the spotted-tail dasyure, native cat or the tiger cat, is a carnivorous marsupial native to eastern and southern Australia and the island of Tasmania. These semi-arboreal mammals can be found in a variety of habitats including mixed dry and alpine forests, pastureland, and grasslands, but seem to prefer wetter environments such as riverine forests, rainforests and closed eucalypt forest. Tiger quolls are generally nocturnal, spending there days in dens they build in burrows, caves, rock crevices, tree hollows, hollow logs, or abandoned buildings. They emerge at night to hunt prey such as insects, crustaceans, lizards, snakes, frogs, birds, platypus, echidnas, rabbits, possums, cuscuses, gliders, bandicoots, pademelons, small wallabies, and wombats. Tiger quolls are themselves preyed upon by Tasmanian devils, masked owls, dingos, large pythons, and wedge-tailed eagles. Reaching around 27 to 45 inches (69 to 113cms) in length and 3 to 15lbs (1.3 to 7kgs) in weight, with females being a far bit smaller than males, the tiger quoll is the second largest carnivorous marsupial on earth after the Tasmanian devil. At 308 newtons the tiger quoll also sports the second most powerful bite relative to body size of any living mammalian carnivore, after the Tasmanian devil. The tiger quoll has relatively short legs, a tail as long as the rest of its body, a thick neck, and large head with an elongated rounded snout. Each foot has 5 toes with pink foot pads are ridged, an adaptation for its arboreal lifestyle. The fur is typically reddish brown, occasionally black, with a creamy white colored underside. Mating occurs from april into july. The gestation period in this species lasts for 21 days, yielding 5 young on average. The babies are then moved to the pouch of their mother, where they continue to grow for the following 12 weeks. The young become fully independent by 18 to 21 weeks of age, reach sexual maturity at 1 year, and may live up to 7 years.

  "Entre les premiers dégâts de la mouche invasive Drosophila suzukii, constatés sur des cerises françaises en 2010, et l’introduction intentionnelle de son prédateur naturel pour la combattre, il s’est écoulé treize ans. Plus d’une décennie durant laquelle les scientifiques de l’équipe Recherche et développement en lutte biologique de l’Inrae ont tenté de trouver l’insecte idéal qui viendra réguler naturellement les populations de la drosophile du cerisier, plutôt que d’utiliser des pesticides. Une démarche étayée et minutieuse, qui a nécessité l’accord des autorités. Malgré tout, le coresponsable de ce groupe de recherche Nicolas Borowiec concède auprès de Libération : «Il y a un écart entre ce que l’on observe au laboratoire dans des conditions artificielles et contrôlées, et ce qu’il se passe dans la nature.»

  «Mesurer la balance des coûts et des bénéfices»

Si l’introduction volontaire d’un parasitoïde venu d’Asie constitue un espoir pour sauver la filière cerise en France et qu’elle est très encadrée, la lutte biologique peut parfois virer au cauchemar. Ce fut le cas en Australie, avec une espèce devenue aujourd’hui le symbole d’une introduction volontaire qui a mal tourné : le crapaud buffle. Importé en 1935 pour combattre un scarabée qui attaquait les champs de canne à sucre, l’amphibien a proliféré dans le nord du territoire, devenant une espèce exotique envahissante particulièrement problématique pour la faune sauvage australienne. «L’espèce était beaucoup trop généraliste, se désole Nicolas Borowiec. C’est pour cela que l’on utilise désormais des spécialistes [des prédateurs qui ne s’attaquent pas à d’autres espèces, ndlr]. On évite ce genre de dérives.» Encore aujourd’hui, le pays n’a pas réussi à se débarrasser du crapaud buffle, qui pourrait provoquer l’extinction du dasyure, un petit marsupial.

  L’île de la Réunion a elle aussi connu des déboires avec l’introduction, en 2007, d’une guêpe originaire d’Indonésie, surnommée «mouche bleue». L’objectif était de combattre la prolifération de la vigne marronne, une ronce dont elle raffole et qui gênait randonneurs et agriculteurs. L’expérience est concluante. Sauf que l’insecte ne s’est pas limité à sa cible d’origine : cette guêpe serait entrée en concurrence avec les abeilles en butinant les fleurs. Les apiculteurs de l’île et le conseil régional dénoncent alors une «catastrophe écologique» et réclament des comptes au gouvernement. Des analyses poussées sont effectuées, et concluent que les répercussions sur les abeilles sont en réalité assez minimes comparées aux bénéfices apportés sur la vigne marronne.

  Depuis, la France redouble d’attention et a durci les conditions d’introduction d’organismes vivants. «Il faut mesurer la balance des coûts et des bénéfices avant l’introduction d’un insecte exotique dans la nature», martèle Nicolas Borowiec qui mène systématiquement des années d’études en laboratoire en amont. Et de rappeler un exemple ayant particulièrement bien fonctionné : en 2011, son équipe a introduit un parasitoïde pour lutter contre le cynips du châtaignier, un insecte ravageur de cette culture. «Après dix ans, les populations se sont complètement régulées», assure le scientifique.

L’échec de l’acclimatation

Le recours à cette méthode nécessite donc de la prudence et des analyses approfondies. Sur son site Internet, le muséum national d’Histoire naturelle avertit : «Si la lutte biologique semble intéressante, elle peut provoquer une invasion supplémentaire et déstabiliser encore plus l’écosystème d’accueil. On a ainsi renoncé à favoriser l’infection du frelon asiatique par un ver, car il n’est pas assez efficace pour menacer les colonies et il peut aussi parasiter d’autres espèces comme les bourdons.»

  L’autre risque, moins dramatique, c’est l’échec de l’acclimatation. Certaines introductions d’espèces exotiques en France, notamment contre le carpocapse de la pomme, un papillon ravageur, ou la mouche de l’olive, n’ont rien donné. Les prédateurs n’ont jamais été retrouvés dans la nature, et les espèces invasives continuent de proliférer. Une perte de temps et de moyens, que redoutent les chercheurs, toujours en quête d’une alternative durable aux pesticides."
