S Rank - Yes, a LOT of them are literally just most of Series 2 & 3 with a dash of Series 1. Alvarez arc was a nice way to tie up a lot of loose ends and stories. Starting with Natsu's backstory of who he is and how he arrived to where he needed to be at Fairy Tail, Zeref, Acnologia, Dragon Slayers. A lot of people hate the 'fake out' deaths, but like... it's Fairy Tail, by this point I don't think anyone expected anyone to die. MHA and Naruto sure get "oh someone died" but they were like... basically minor/side/unknown people. I liked the culmination of who Zeref is and Mavis, both people responsible for the story to exist, and Acnologia. And while people will say "But Anna and Ichiya did a great job defeating Acnologia!" and yeah, but this is an issue for many shounen series. Zeref and Acnologia were both two antagonists that were critical for Natsu's story arc, one because of his birth and the other to avenge Igneel. Also it helps we got to see the fruits of the entire series of bonds being made coming back up to defend Ishgar and Fairy Tail. Not only that, but Gray actually admits he might actually like Natsu as an actual good friend of his despite them always fighting. I'm a sucker for these kinds of stories, an while yeah, Fairy Tail, no one dies, but it was still tense. I'm really okay with it because..... after reading Akame ga Kill and Goblin slayer, I'm 10 billion % okay with it. Tartaros in itself is a nice dark story, I mean, it involved demons. That in itself was cool. Not to mention the arc starts WITH THE ENTIRE COUNCIL BEING BLOWN UP. Like, can you ask for such an amazing intro? Not only that but we get answered about the mystery surrounding the disappearing dragons for our Generation 1 Dragon Slayers. The demons themselves are interesting. Some are ... **coughs** . One of my favorite scenes, is literally just Cana turning everyone into cards before the Guild blows up, and the three Exceeds just take to the skies towards Tartaros with the entire deck of the guild. It's like a friggin war before Alvarez was a thing. Gray gets some closure with his dad and sorta is able to move on with his past, and Lucy & Wendy both take a huge step forward in closing the gap. Both of them lacked a lot in the "combat department" but this arc really gave them a boost to work on for later. Not to mention we're introduced to Devil Slaying, and the revelation of who E.N.D. is. Grand Magic Games is definitely in my top favorite "tournament arcs" in anime. We're introduced to basically TWO anti-Fairy Tail guilds, Sabertooth and Raven Tail (The literal anti- Fairy Tail guild). It was basically a fun games tournament. What makes it top for me is that it's not JUST fighting. Yeah there's quite a bit, but we have really dumb stuff like... literally a race. hide n seek. Gauntlet (changed to strength testing), some weird swimsuit pool sphere thing. I mean yeah you can argue "fighting" still happens, but it was still fun to see something other than 1 v 1 fights. And even then the actual 'fight' battles were fun to see. Then we get a 2nd conspiracy plot of a plan to try and kill Zeref, some time travel of x years from the future, DRAGON INVASION, I mean sheesh. It started as a fun tournament full of bragging rights basically an it became a full on survival or die situation. Avatar Arc is one of the shorter ones, but it was still a nice "getting the band back together" shtick. It was also a nice 'preview' of our Team Natsu gang and what they've accomplished in just a year of training on their own. I mean. Natsu melted the stadium and everything just on his return. I also enjoyed like how this cult of Zeref supposed to matter, and like, they're taken out so quickly it's like they were the villains from 5 seasons ago. Not only that, but right before it transitions into the final arc we get a small backstory of Zeref and how he came to be immortal and the circumstances around Natsu being E.N.D. A - Rank. This is the one where it COULD have been an S for me, but there are like, 1 minor thing or something.

Sun Village was a nice transition to introduce us into the Tartaros arc, and we get a nice little backstory and redemption for Flare from a previous arc. We also get a glimpse into the "demons of tartaros" and "devil slaying magic" as well as a return of our good 'ol friend Atlas, again, from a previous arc. :3 Only thing keeping it a bit up, was that the treasure hunters, while interesting and ties more into Fairy tail Zero, could have been better.

Tenrou Arc is a nice story as it semi paid off the mention of both Zeref and Acnologia, as well as the connection Zeref had with Natsu. We also get background on our favorite booze hound, Cana, and her connection with Gildarts, as well as learning more about Fairy Tail's history as we're introduce to Hades/Precht who was originally the Fairy Tail Master Prior to Makarov. We also conclude Ultear's story that started in the Galuna arc alongside Ur's and Gray's story. I thought the teams were neat, and the examination part prior to Grimoire Heart's invasion was fun to see, especially seeing more sides of other characters like Fried and Bicslow. Laxus's entrance and the introduction of the Fire Lightning Dragon mode was great. Honestly though, I think it could've been slightly better paced, but overall still fun.

Macao arc. I bunched these shorter arcs because. They're basically the 'intro' arc still. In just these episodes we not only get to know about Lucy, Natsu, Happy, but even the Fairy Tail Guild. In the daybreak we first officially see Natsu and Lucy begin their team, that would later be added with Gray, Erza, and then Wendy. Nothing to complain.

Fairy Tail Zero. I am a sucker for backstories, especially Mavis's, and this arc just. stabs your heart to death. It's a prequel basically, and we know the fates of everyone here. Not to mention we understand her connection to the Guild and how she met Zeref. It's an A because it stabbed my heart to death.

Galuna Arc. Gray is the first character aside from Lucy and Natsu we learn to understand why he has that stripping habit, out of context it's funny, in context, it stabs your heart. xD We also get a follow up to 'another' of Zeref's demons. The pace could have been slightly better, but overall, still great. I also loved the lore about Happy’s egg and the backstory of Lisanna and how she played a role early in Natsu’s life.

Tower of Heaven. I think this is one of the biggest changing story arcs for our little team. It sets up not only Erza's backstory and reasoning for her personality, but also for other Villains down the road, the Oracion Seis. We're also introduced to 'Dragon Force', the temporary super saiyan-like power up for Dragon Slayers. One of the greatest things is how Erza is before & after this arc occurs. She goes from a "cold locked heart" member of the Guild to fully open her heart for the first time in ages.

|| Oh look, a Fairy Tail story arc tier ranking. I had something bigger in mind but I thought to start with just this. I'll be reblogging with reasons why each arc is in each tier, so if you're curious they will be labeled. The overall explanation wound up to be like. Five pages. So. Yeah I had a lot to say for some. Also to clear things up, I combined the first set of episodes up until the introduction of Erza into one arc because.... they're all very short and I felt it was easier talking about the entire segments as one as they sorta still count as an 'introduction' arc. Also this is strictly going by the anime as I've just rewatched it and I had to use the wikia to remind me which story arcs because I wasn't keeping track. Lol For the rundown: S-Tier: Alvarez Arc, Tartaros Arc, GMG Arc, Avatar Arc. A-Tier: Sun Village Arc, Tenrou Arc, Macao/Homecoming Arc, Fairy Tail Zero Arc, Galuna Arc, Tower of Heaven arc. B-Tier: Edolas Arc, Eisewald arc, Battle of Fairy Tail arc, Phantom Lord arc. C-Tier: Starry Sky/Infinity Clock arc, Loke arc, Oracion Seis/Nirvana Arc. D-Tier: Daphne Arc. F-Tier: Eclipse Celestial Spirits Arc.

GRUVIA WEEK

DAY 2:- WARMTH

NEXT DAY

Gray was fast asleep until his cute little daughter came to wake him up.

"Papa"

"Papa…. Wakey wakey"

Yuki patted his face which made him groan. She could see the success of her action.

Yuki tried to climb the bed which was a bit difficult for her but finally succeeded and sat near her papa and began to shake him.

Gray couldn't prolong his sleep anymore and accepted his defeat.

Finally, he opened his eyes and instantly he was hit by a wave of love and warmth seeing his daughter's smiling face first thing in the morning.

"Good morning, dear" His voice sounded a bit hoarse and pulled his daughter into a hug.

"Good morning, papa" Yuki kissed his cheeks and began to play with her father by squishing his cheeks which made him laugh.

After playing and teasing his daughter a bit, Gray sent her back to Juvia so that he could get freshened up.

Then, the family of three were having their breakfast peacefully until Gray's recent commercial began to appear on the television.

Before the commercials could catch Yuki's attention, Juvia turned off the tv and Gray sighed in relief.

They had hidden the fact that Gray is an actor from Yuki to avoid any unwanted issues to arise which may lead to exposing their relationship.

"Mama, why did you turn off the tv?" The little girl pouted.

To distract her attention from this matter, Gray began to question her what she wanted to do today.

"Yuki wants to play house with papa. Will papa play with Yuki?" She began to show her puppy eyes which made him fall straight into the trap.

Seeing her daughter and her husband spend time and reforming their bonds, Juvia's heart swelled up.

Without knowing herself, she began to tear up as she never got the chance to know what parental love and care was.

Juvia quickly wiped her tears before they caught her husband's attention.

"Okay, dear, today I'm going to play whatever my darling wants to play. Fine!!" Gray promised his little girl with a pinky cross which Yuki made him do it nevertheless.

It had been six months since Gray and Juvia began dating. In these six months, it was hardly a few times he had taken her out on a date.

By then, Gray's first tv drama had gained a lot of popularity for its storyline and also for his handsome features and acting skill which made him quite recognizable in the public.

But Juvia never minded this. She was overjoyed that her boyfriend was gaining lots of attention and his hard work is paving way for success.

Sometimes, they would not be able to meet each other due to his work schedule. Yet Juvia never complained and supported him like a good girlfriend which he was very grateful for.

One such day, when Gray finally got his much needed day off, he had decided to take her to a fancy restaurant and make her feel happy.

"Gray-sama, are you sure?"

"Certainly. Go get ready, Juvia. We don't want to miss this chance." Gray gave her a smile that was laced with tiredness.

Juvia reluctantly agreed and asked her boyfriend to wait for few minutes. Once she came back, the sight she saw in front of her eyes was Gray had fallen asleep and he looked too peaceful to disturb.

"I knew this was the case." Juvia giggled lightly and brought a blanket to wrap around him.

"Gray-sama, it's time to take some rest. You have worked hard enough for the past few weeks. Get rejuvenated.." Juvia whispered and ruffled his hairs lightly, which she always loved to do.

After it seemed to be an hour, Gray woke up suddenly and hit himself for falling asleep. Before calling out his girlfriend, he glanced at the wall clock and realized he had messed up their date night.

He mentally cursed himself and went towards the kitchen as he could hear the voice coming from there.

There Gray saw Juvia was making some spaghetti while conversing with someone over the mobile.

"No, Gajeel-kun. I don't feel neglected or burdened. Gray-sama has been taking good care of me and loves me."

From her conversation, Gray could make out Gajeel was inquiring about their relationship and still not believe him.

"See, it's not his fault. If he's busy, then that means his work and career are going in the correct direction. Of course, at times, I feel lonely but once I hear Gray-sama's voice everything fades away.

Poor thing, he had planned to take me on a dinner date to one of those newly opened fancy restaurants but he was so worn out that we couldn't go and neither I wanted to force him"

Gray could see her genuine concern and satisfaction of having him sleep instead of making him more tired.

"I'm thankful that we could talk every day and see each other at times for now that's enough. Once this project wraps up, we would get some time for ourselves till then I'm will wait." Juvia said earnestly.

Gray was so moved by her words that he felt lucky for getting a girlfriend who was so understanding and mature, unlike the few people he knew.

Soon he moved forward and hugged her from behind which made Juvia squeak which was heard by Gajeel over the line.

"Juvia, what happened? Hello," Gajeel sounded frantic.

"Gray-sama, it's you. Oof! I thought it was someone else. Gajeel-Kun, don't worry it's Gray-sama. I will call you later. Take care." Juvia cut the call before Gajeel could ask her anymore.

"Sorry for startling you. I want to tell you something, thank you for being with me. Having you by my side lessens down my stress and burden, Juvia." His words sounded so genuine to her which brought a big smile to her face.

Juvia cupped his face and without uttering any words kissed him passionately which Gray reciprocated without any second thoughts.

Once they had enjoyed their kissing sessions, Juvia then proceeded to kiss his forehead by asking him to bend down a little.

"Gray-sama, it's me who should be thanking you. After meeting you, I can say my life changed for good. Before it was only me and Gajeel-kun, but now, I got to be friends with everyone and they all are very friendly with me too.

I never knew this is what it means to be being in love. Just because we can't spend time with each other much that doesn't mean there's no love. So never think that's the case and work on your career. I will always support you, Gray-sama." Juvia said confidently and smiled at him.

Gray smiled at her and kissed her again on her lips, "Juvia, it's you who has brightened up my life. Your warm personality makes me feel at home. At times, I feel guilty that we aren't being like a normal couple but hearing your words puts me at ease. Believe me, I love you and happy to have you in my life." And then kisses her forehead.

"I love you too, Gray-sama" Juvia hugs him a bit tightly.

After dinner, the two had decided to level up their relationship a bit further.

"Are you sure Juvia?"

"Yes, Gray-sama. Until and unless if you are tired, we could just stop now."

Juvia teased him and got up off the bed but Gray caught hold of her wrist and brought her back to his lap.

"I'm sure we are ready for this. Love you, Juvia"

"So do I, Gray-sama"

Throughout the day, Gray and Yuki had played the games that the latter suggested without complaining.

Juvia had fun clicking pictures of her husband in funny makeup which their daughter had applied on his face.

"While you stop laughing, geez.. stop it Juvia" Gray grew red as she kept looking at the gallery full of Gray's pictures.

"I'm sure Natsu-San will tease for a whole month if he sees you like this." Juvia chuckled and kept looking.

Gray tried to snatch her mobile but Juvia began to play and raised her arms above her head and when he tried to catch it and soon shifted it to her back which happened for some time until Gray gave it.

Seeing he beloved pouted, Juvia let down her guard and that was enough for Gray to cleverly snatch her mobile.

"It's unfair, Gray-sama" Now it was Juvia's turn to pout while he pinched her nose and kept on chuckling.

He kept looking at all the pictures and everything was really funny and a bit embarrassing.

But he didn't have the heart to delete those pictures as in all those photos his daughter looked so happy and her smile was so adorable.

"Fine, here you go. I'm not deleting those photos. Yuki looks so adorable and innocent. I'm melting seeing these photos." Gray chuckled and handed over the mobile.

Juvia could deny the fact. Suddenly, Juvia's eyes caught the attention of a drone that was flying near their balcony.

"Gray-sama, look outside"

When Gray saw the drone, he couldn't process what is happening. He soon dashed off to pull the curtains together.

"Gray-sama, is it some kind of prank? Or is someone spying on us?" Juvia asked worriedly.

Luckily, Yuki was in her room drawing some pictures. But to be on the safer side, Juvia went to her room to check if any drone was flying near the window.

Gray, by then, informed his agency about this incident and was trying to seek details regarding this.

"Juvia looks like someone is spying on us. These reporters can go to any extent to get a scoop. Don't worry, this will get sorted out soon." Gray assured his wife and hugged her.

"Okay, Gray-sama" Juvia hugged him back.

— "You don't understand (F/N)! I swear we're soulmates!" You gushed out, showing your friend yet another picture of Todoroki Shouto, Oikawa was walking down the hallway when he heard you say this.

—He'd thought that you were talking about him, so he listened in your conversation. "Y/N, you've been talking about him for the past.. two weeks? What's so great about him anyway?" Your friend sighed, Oikawa's eyebrows quirked up.

— "Oh? I'll write you a whole essay on how much I love Todoroki, maybe even two!" You smiled, "Wow she loves me that much, wait what?" He said, confused.

— "Who the hell is Todoroki?" He mumbled to himself, "Who?" Iwaizumi asked as he popped up behind Oikawa, "Iwa-chan! Y/N's talking about another guy! You don't think she's.." He trailed off, pouting.

— "She would never do that Oikawa, she loves you a lot you know that, if you're so concerned then ask her that yourself" Iwaizumi said, walking off.

— "I guess.." Oikawa said, walking in the classroom, your friend taps your shoulder, as you look behind you to see your one and only boyfriend. "Tooru! Why do you look so sad?" You laughed, as he sat beside you

— "I'll leave you two here, see ya Y/N" Your friend waves as she walks out. "What's up?" You said, taking a sip of your juice box, "You know what's up.." He said, "Huh? I'm afraid I don't" you smiled once again.

— Oikawa sighed, rolling his eyes. "Who were you talking about with (F/N)?” He asked, propping his chin on the palm of his hand. “Hm? You heard that?” You said, nervously chuckling, he observed your jittery antics, “So? Who was it” His eyes bore into yours. “Uh, it’s just someone I swear!” You said, “Uh huh sure..” He said he said in a sarcastic tone, “But it’s true” You said, defending yourself.

— “It’s just embarrassing okay?” You said, hiding your face behind your notebook. “What’s more embarrassing is that you have a fully capable boyfriend right here but you’re talking about other guys” He once again rolled his eyes. “Fine! I was talking about my favourite character okay?” You said, with your face blushing.

— He looked at you with wide eyes. “T-That’s it? I was jealous for nothing?!” He yelled, covering his mouth right after the words fell out his mouth. “I-I mean, I’m not jealous at all!” He said, crossing his arms together.

— “Hah? You were jealous? Over Todoroki?” You started laughing at him, while he just sulks. “It’s not my fault! I didn’t know who that was.. Whatever! I should be the only guy you talk about” He said, trying to look serious. But the way you laughed at him made him smile as well.

— “I guess it can’t be helped” He shrugs as he takes your hand in his, making you stand up. “Let’s take a walk hm?” He said, shining his dashing smile towards you.

Kuroo Tetsurou

—You were talking with your friend on the phone while hanging out with Kuroo, he excused himself to get a snack or something when he heard you talk about ‘Natsu’ Kuroo leaned closer to the room, trying to listen in your conversation.

— “Omg, his abs? Too much to handle” You squealed, rolling on your bed while hugging a pillow. Kuroo huffed as he lazily walked back inside, “I’m back,” He said, holding a cup of instant ramen, he sat on your bed.

— “Hey Kuroo, I’ll call you later, bye!” You hung up, sitting up as you opened your mouth. “Give me some”. He put some noodles in your mouth as you chewed happily. “Hey, uh who’s Natsu? And why are you talking about his abs?” He bashfully said, scratching his nape, “OH, um.. It’s nothing!” You tried to play it off.

— ‘You’re not telling me something here..” He said, putting the noodles aside, he gently pushed you down the bed, caging you between his arms, his body hovered on top of yours. “And you gotta tell me now darling” He smirked, you were speechless nonetheless. Kuroo quirked his head to the side. “Not talking?” His head moving closer to yours.

— “H-He’s a fictional character! N-Nothing else” You said, shielding your face with your hands, “See? That wasn’t so hard now was it?” He said, moving his body away from you as he reached for his noodles.

— “I got jealous over a fictional character, that was lame” He laughed at himself, looking towards your direction, your hands were still covering your face. “Yeah, so stupid Kuroo” Your voice was muffled, “Come on now, I didn’t fluster you that much didn’t I?” He chuckled, you shook your head refusing to uncover your blushing face.

— “Now you got something to actually talk about with your friend, Natsu’s abs pfftt, don’t make me laugh” He joked, “Kuroo!” You yelled as he laughed at your misery,

— Every now and then when he catches you staring at him at a game, he would tease you by lifting up his shirt to wipe off his sweat, giving you a clear view of his abs.

Bokuto Koutarou

—Bokuto was playing some game on your phone when a text notification catches his eye, ‘You got pictures of Kuroko, give them up bitch’ Bokuto’s face contorted into a confused one. He texted back ‘Kuroko? Who’s that’. He started playing again but the same person texted back.

— ‘Don’t give that bull, the one you’re in love with, you talk about him all the time’ Bokuto stared at the message, the last time he checked his name wasn’t Kuroko. So who was the guy you were in love with? He decided to leave the conversation alone as you popped in, “Hey Bo, can I have my phone?” You asked Bokuto nodded as he handed your phone back to you.

— “Something wrong?” You said, scrolling down your phone. “Nothing, uh listen I gotta go to Akaashi, see you Y/N” He said, not even sparing you a glance, and his usual cheerful persona was nowhere to be seen, now you know something was up. You tried to strike up a conversation with Bokuto but he just shuts you down with ‘I’m busy’ and walks away, he’s been ignoring your messages and calls.

—You got fed up with this behavior, so when you got the chance to have him alone in the classroom you took it. “Bokuto Koutarou” You said sternly, “Do you know how hurt I am when you deliberately avoid me?” You said, “But I’m the one who’s hurting Y/N,” He said, not looking at you, as he walked up to the door but you quickly blocked him.

— “Get out of the way Y/N” He said, sighing loudly, “Not until you tell me what your problem is” You said, standing your ground. “Fine! Who’s Kuroko then? Your friend says that your so in love with him and you- you keep talking-” Bokuto didn’t get to finish his rant as you doubled over, laughing.

— “Oi, Y/N this is no laughing manner!” He said, “B-But Bokuto! You’re mad about a fictional character!” You said before laughing again, Bokuto stood frozen in place as he tried processing your words, “Oh..” Was all he said, “Y/NNNN I’m sorry! I was so childish and didn’t ask you first” He said, as he hugged you tightly.

— “Oh, Bo, you ought to tell me what’s wrong, that’s how a relationship works” You smiled, “I’m still sorry! I’ll be sure to tell you if something’s bothering me from now on!” He said, bowing. “It’s alright,” You said, “How about I treat you ice cream? It’ll be my apology for my actions” He said, taking your hands in his. “Sounds good,” You said as you felt relieved to finally make up with your little owl.

Gratsu Winter Solstice 2020 Prompt: Fun in the Snow Pairing: Gray x Natsu

“Have you figured out the answer yet?” Gray asked, trying to remain patient even though it was clear to him that Natsu wasn’t paying the slightest bit of attention to the math problem he was supposed to be working on.

“What?” Natsu finally stopped staring out the window long enough to glance at Gray with a guilty expression that he couldn’t help but find incredibly cute.

Hana, Atlas, and Aki were glued to the window as well, oohing and aahing as the backyard accumulated more and more snow.

“What’s the matter with you guys? You’re all acting like you’ve never seen snow before.”

“Well, I mean, they sort of haven’t. It didn’t really snow that much in Edolas, a few inches at the most,” Natsu reminded him, “This is the first big snowfall they’ve ever seen, and they’ve been looking forward to it for weeks.”

The longing in Natsu’s eyes made it clear that the kids weren’t the only ones who had been looking forward to it. To his credit, he did try to shift his focus back to studying, staring at the problem he was supposed to solve for about five minutes before his eyes strayed back to the window again.

“Fine, fine, you win,” Gray sighed, realizing any further attempts would be pointless and that Aki would probably love to go out with Atlas and Hana in the snow. “Let’s go play.”

He snorted when his words were immediately met with cheers and dazzling smiles.

“Are you sure?” Natsu asked, “I know I can get this if I keep at it.”

“There’s no point. Your mind’s clearly out there,” Gray shrugged. “We can take a break for one day. It won’t mess up anything. Besides, how can you expect me to say no to those faces?” He nodded towards the kids, who were staring at them with big, pleading eyes, bouncing on their feet in anticipation. “I guess you’re right,” Natsu chuckled and closed his math book as he got up. He stretched his arms above his head, causing his shirt to ride up and expose part of his abdomen, and now it was Gray’s turn to be distracted.

Hana dashed to the coat closet to grab her winter gear and put it on, all the while telling them all the things she wanted to do once they got outside.

“Do you have stuff for Aki?” Natsu asked, his lips twitching at Hana’s running commentary. “I think Erza got two sets for Atlas. He’s welcome to borrow one.”

“Nah, I’ve got his stuff in the car. I’ll be right back.”

Gray put on his jacket and went outside, stopping briefly to collect some of the snow that had accumulated on the steps into his gloved hand and examining it, grinning when he saw how well it stuck together. Perfect snow for playing, fluffy and wet.

He felt his own excitement build. Winter had always been his favorite season, and some of his fondest memories were of playing in the snow with his parents and Rogue once he was a bit older. They’d had snowball fights, built snowmen, collapsed on the snow to make angels, and careened down ever higher hills on sleds for hours, returning home to hot cocoa and cookies as their mom complained that their lips were a worrying shade of blue.

Gray still treasured those memories and looked forward to doing some of those things with Aki now that he was old enough. He rushed back inside, beginning the long process of bundling his son up into his winter gear.

Thankfully Atlas was there to distract him, chattering excitedly as Natsu got him ready. It was only when both boys were dressed that Gray shifted his attention.

“Are you sure you don’t want to put anything else on?” Gray mocked, amused by the ridiculous amount of clothing Natsu was wearing. Snow pants tucked over his snow boots, a padded jacket, the checkered scarf he often wore, a balaclava under a woolen hat, and thick gloves.

“It’s cold,” Natsu shrugged, then looking him over, he urged, “Shouldn’t you get ready? The kids are getting impatient.”

“I am ready, Sunshine.”

Natsu gaped at him, or so Gray imagined since the only part of his face that he could really make out was his eyes.

“You can’t be serious. You’re going to freeze!”

“And you call me a princess? I hate to break it to you, but it’s not even that cold. I’ve got gloves and my jacket. I’m good.” He opened the door that led to the backyard and walked out with Aki and Atlas following close behind. Hana dashed past him in a purple blur.

Snow continued to fall, although the heaviest part of the storm seemed to be over, and Gray stuck his tongue out, trying to catch snowflakes as he’d done when he was little and smiling at the familiar tingle.

Gray thought he saw Natsu staring at him, but it was too brief for him to be sure. He shrugged it off, switching his attention to the boys and chuckling at their antics. Atlas had lain down on the snow and was rolling himself around, turning into a human snowball as more and more snow stuck to him while Natsu somehow managed to take pictures on his phone.

Aki was busy alternating between admiring the snow that stuck to his mittens with an awed expression and giggling at the crunching noise his boots made when he moved, causing Gray’s heart to swell. He quickly took a few pictures to show his parents and walked over to encourage him to play with the others.

He stopped short when he saw the misshapen blob that Hana and Natsu were cobbling together.

“What is that supposed to be?”

“What do you mean? It’s a snowball, obviously.” Natsu held up his creation with a lot more pride than it deserved.

“That thing has no business calling itself a snowball,” Gray scoffed, “It’s going to fall apart in the air long before it hits anything.”

“Will not.”

“Oh yeah? Go ahead, throw it at me.”

Natsu hurled the snowball, but Gray didn’t even bother moving, and just as he expected, it never hit.

"Told you," he said smugly and squatted down to grab some snow off the ground, skillfully shaping it into an almost perfect ball. "My turn," he flashed a wicked grin and threw the snowball, watching with childish glee as it soared through the air and hit Natsu square in the face.

“Hey, no fair, you’re not supposed to throw them in people’s faces,” Natsu protested, wiping the snow off his face with his glove.

“I figured you wouldn’t even feel it through all that padding,” he teased, making no effort to apologize. “That’s what a real snowball feels like.”

“How’d you get it to pack like that?”

“Here, let me show you, and then we can have ourselves a real fight,” Gray offered before Natsu could get it into his head to retaliate. “You too, Hana.”

He cupped some snow between his hands, rotating them slowly to help fuse the snow together. “You just gotta make sure to press down firmly when you rotate your hands. That packs the snow in real good and keeps it from falling apart midair.”

Hana and Natsu watched eagerly as he explained, imitating his actions. Their first efforts were pretty pitiful.

“Just keep at it. Those already look better,” he encouraged, “ You’ll know you’re doing it right when you can stack them up.”

He noticed Aki gazing at the trees with interest and picked him up, walking over towards the nearest one so his son could touch one of its branches, delighting at his laugh when the snow came down. Gray kissed Aki’s chubby cheek and whispered, “I love you, kiddo.”

“I did it!”

Hana’s exalted cry was cut short as the stack of snowballs she’d worked so hard on toppled over when Atlas attempted to grab one.

“Hey!” she started to protest, but whatever expression Atlas had on his face changed her mind, causing her to dissolve into giggles instead.

The sound of Hana’s laughter drew Aki’s attention, and he wiggled in Gray’s arms, wanting to be put down to go investigate what his friends were up to.

Gray obliged, watching as Hana and Natsu created stacks of snowballs for Atlas to topple, and when Aki joined in, he began to make some as well, amused by how easily the two boys were entertained. After a bit, Natsu changed up the game, showing them how to stack the snowballs instead.

He had to admit that his friend was pretty good with kids, which was probably not a huge surprise, considering he seemed to be a big kid himself. It made Gray wonder what parenting might have been like if he’d been married to someone like that.

He analyzed Natsu’s backyard, trying to distract himself from any thoughts of his ex. He was soon struck with an idea.

“Hey Natsu, you got any snow shovels?”

“Yeah, hang on.”

Natsu waddled over to the small shed that sat on their driveway, returning with two adult shovels and two child-sized ones. “What do you have in mind?”

“How do you feel about putting a small sledding hill in for the kids?”

“I think it’s a great idea, just surprised you came up with it, “ Natsu’s eyes crinkled, and Gray could easily visualize the accompanying grin underneath the balaclava. “I bet I can shovel more snow than you, though.”

“In your dreams, Squinty Eyes.”

They decided on an area and began shoveling snow into a large pile and packing it down while Hana kept the boys entertained.

“Getting tired yet?” Natsu huffed.

“This is nothing. I could go all day,” he smirked, noticing Natsu’s discomfort, “You seem pretty done, though.”

“In your dreams, Droopy Eyes.” Natsu unzipped his jacket to reveal a fleece liner underneath, “I’m just getting started.”

“Droopy?! And here I’ve been told they’re one of my best features,” Gray retorted, as he climbed to the top of the makeshift hill, ensuring the snow was packed in well enough. “I think we can stop now. This is probably tall enough for them. You’ll have to impress me with your stamina another time.”

Natsu’s eyes widened in disbelief before he exploded into a fit of raucous laughter.

“Is it ready?” Hana asked, rushing over to them with Atlas and Aki chasing after her.

“Yep, go get your sled from the shed, and can you bring that little inflatable one?”

“Yeah,” Hana ran off, returning with a pink saucer sled and a folded up piece of vinyl, which she handed over to her father to inflate.

“I got it. Wouldn’t want you to have to take off anything,” Gray grabbed the sled out of Natsu’s hands, finding the plastic tube and blowing into it until it had filled up.

Hana climbed the steps he’d carved into the snow with the kid shovels and sat down on her sled, squealing loudly when he gave her a firm push. She slid down the hill, her sled continuing to travel for several feet, leaving a trail in the snow. She was up as soon as her sled stopped, running back to them with a massive smile on her face.

“That was awesome!”

Gray couldn’t help but grin in response, pleased that he’d been able to make her so happy with such a simple act. He wondered how Aki would respond, and knowing his timid nature, he asked Natsu to have Atlas go first.

The sled had a little seat belt built into it, which was nice because the last thing on Atlas’ mind was holding on. He cackled all the way down and then chatted excitedly to Natsu as they returned.

Aki pulled on his leg, eager to take his turn, and Gray helped him into the sled. He let him have a moment to get used to it before nodding to Natsu to give him a push. Although his response to the experience was more muted than the two Dragneel kids, it was no less joyful, and Gray hid his face, fighting back unexpected tears at watching Aki lead a life more in line with what he’d always wanted for him.

Rather than tease him for getting overly emotional, Natsu offered him a half hug and went back to helping the kids sled down the hill until he was ready to rejoin them. It was gestures like that that made him wish that Natsu would see him as someone he could love, rather than just a good friend.

“Dada!”

Aki’s excited cries called him back, and they stayed out until the kids’ teeth began chattering from the cold.

0-0 After they’d helped the kids get out of their layers and put all the winter gear away, Natsu moved to the kitchen. He filled a large glass measuring cup with water, placed it in the microwave, and then started searching through the cabinets. “Do you want some hot cocoa?” he asked Gray once he’d found what he was looking for: a box full of packets of instant hot cocoa powder. “Sorry, what?” Gray stared at him in a mixture of horror and pure disbelief. “I’m going to pretend you didn’t just say that.” “Huh?” Natsu puzzled, completely lost as to what he meant. “Whatever you think that is-” Gray pointed an accusing finger at the box, “I'm not drinking it. Move over.” He did a quick check through the fridge and the cupboards to make sure Natsu had everything he needed to make real hot cocoa and got to work. Meanwhile, Natsu piled a mountain of cookies onto a plate to go along with it, laughing when Atlas and Aki came begging one off him before he’d even finished. Natsu’s phone buzzed in his pocket, and he quickly wiped the cookie crumbs off his hands before checking it. Gray watched his brows knit together as he focused on the message, but his expression soon turned into one of joy and relief. “Well, looks like I get tonight off. Jellal told me not to bother coming in. It’s been quiet all day because of the snow,” he reported happily as he put his phone away again. “You should stay for dinner. The roads are crap anyway.”

“You sure? We wouldn’t want to put you out.”

“Sure, we’ve got plenty of frozen pizzas,” Natsu opened the freezer, pointing to an alarming amount of pizza boxes.

“Is that all you eat?” Gray asked in horror.

“Hah, well,” Natsu threaded his fingers through his hair in an embarrassed gesture, “Erza’s the one who usually cooks. She gets those for us for when she’s not around. Oh! I should let her know she doesn’t have to hurry back.”

He pulled out his phone and began texting his sister as Gray mulled the invitation over. He hadn’t really been looking forward to going home yet. Lyon would still be at work, and he knew the apartment would feel empty after having spent the afternoon surrounded by Natsu’s warmth.

That decided him.

“Fine, I’ll stay, but we’re not having frozen pizza.” He rolled his sleeves up and headed to the sink to wash his hands, thinking about the limited number of things he knew how to make.

He opened their pantry and breathed a sigh of relief when he found two boxes of pasta and a few jars of sauce. “Make yourself useful, fill a big pot with water and put it on the stove,” he demanded, moving stuff around to see what ingredients he could use to add to the sauce.

“I dunno, Erza uh- doesn’t really like it when I use the stove,” Natsu murmured, avoiding Gray’s gaze.

“Why? What did you do, set the kitchen on fire?” Gray blurted, laughing at how absurd that was.

When his joke was received with silence instead of the angry denials he’d been expecting, he glanced up to find Natsu quietly pouring the hot cocoa into mugs and placing them on the table in the breakfast nook along with the cookies. He called the kids over and walked back into the kitchen, still avoiding direct eye contact.

“Oh my God, you did! Didn’t you?!”

“It was an accident!” Natsu protested, “I was making dinner when Atlas’ diaper overfilled, and I had to deal with it. By the time I was done with that, I had forgotten the stove was on.”

Gray wanted to give him a hard time about it, but he could absolutely see that happening. He was well aware of how unreliable Natsu’s attention span was at the best of times. It was the one thing they struggled with the most during their study sessions.

“Well, I’ll be the one cooking, so it shouldn’t be a problem,” Gray assured him, pointing him towards the sink once again.

“What about knives? Are you allowed near those, Pyro?” he taunted as he tossed him an onion to chop.

“It was an accident!” Natsu complained, and when that did nothing to stop the teasing, he pouted, “You’re not funny.”

“Oh, I don’t know about that,” Gray smirked, quite pleased that he might have finally found a nickname to counter the dreaded Princess.

“Jerk,” Natsu muttered, grabbing a knife and attempting to chop the onion.

They worked in somewhat comfortable silence. As usual, Natsu couldn’t stay mad for long, and soon he was telling Gray funny stories about people he’d met at work, while Gray told him about some of the places he’d traveled to for shoots.

“I’ve always wanted to travel,” Natsu commented, pulling out plates from the cupboards and walking off to set the table.

“You’re not exactly dead yet, you know,” Gray called out, pouring the pasta into a colander and checking on the sauce one last time before turning off the stove.

“Yeah, but come on, when am I ever going to be able to afford it or have the time?”

Gray had no answer to that, so he changed the subject instead, “Food’s ready.”

“Hey, you wanna watch a movie after? There’s this one about dragons and vikings we’ve wanted to watch.”

“How to Train your Dragon?”

“You’ve seen it?”

“I went to the premiere,” Gray explained, but when he saw how disappointed Natsu looked by his admission, he hastily added, “But who really watches the movie at those things, it’s all photo ops and gossip. I’d love to watch it.”

It wasn’t entirely a lie, either. Siegrain had felt slighted by some industry bigwig and had spent most of the movie complaining about it. But honestly, even if he’d seen it a hundred times, he’d gladly watch it again if it meant he could experience the beaming smile Natsu flashed his way.

The sun had long ago set by the time they finished eating their dinner, and it wasn’t hard to see that all three kids were going to conk out as soon as they were still for any amount of time. Natsu didn’t seem to notice, though, and Gray didn’t have the heart to dampen his enthusiasm. Not when he was practically bouncing as he went around making popcorn for everyone. Gray volunteered to load the dishwasher, claiming, much to Natsu’s chagrin, that he didn’t want to be responsible for his being banned from yet another kitchen appliance.

Natsu lit the fireplace, placing the screen securely in front while Gray settled the boys on the sofa. After a frantic search for the remote, they were finally ready. They sat down next to each other as the opening credits played. Aki climbed onto Gray’s lap, and Atlas did the same with Natsu, while Hana snuggled up next to her father.

As Gray had predicted, all three kids were out ten minutes later, and then it was just the two of them again, talking and laughing along with the movie. Gray ached to stretch his arm and pull Natsu closer to him, even as Aki snored quietly against him.

He stopped paying attention to the movie, frustrated by how his infatuation with Natsu kept growing outside of his control. Today had only made it worse, enticing him with all the things he’d always wanted in a relationship but had given up on somewhere along the way.

The sound of loud snores startled him out of his thoughts, and he turned his head to discover Natsu had also fallen asleep, his neck tilted at an awkward angle.

Gray stretched his arm, wrapping it around Natsu’s shoulders and slowly pulling him into his chest so he could rest more comfortably. Natsu muttered something in his sleep, snuggling into him with a faint smile that he found adorable.

He sat quietly, content to let everyone sleep while he watched over them, and let himself imagine that maybe, someday, this pocket of happiness could belong to the two of them.

It was only the first day of class and already you could feel exhaustion seeping into your muscles. Although you had fun, perhaps touring the city as much as you could in 5 days wasn’t the best idea. After you finished unpacking, which only took up a day thanks to the help of your neighbors, Yamaguchi had offered to show you his and Tsukishima’s favorite city sights. You couldn’t just say no when presented the chance to explore your new home, get closer to your new friends, and maybe see Tsukishima loosen up a little. Apparently there was a lot to see because each night you three came back to the townhouse past midnight, and after parting ways, you had only enough energy to plop into bed, outside clothes still on, and pass out until morning. Then the cycle repeated.

You were lucky that in both your lectures so far, the professor simply introduced themselves, went over the syllabus, and dismissed class early. You took a mental note to be more strategic about exiting unless you wanted to fight your way through a sea of students after every class, but for now you were just relieved to be outside the stuffy classroom.

Still unfamiliar with campus, you wandered until you found yourself seated on a wooden bench within a community garden. Grateful you had found a relaxing space to rest before your final class of the day, you took out last night’s leftover pasta from the Italian restaurant you visited and dipped a fork into your lunch.

Mid-chew, a soft mewl caught your ear. You gulped and took a glance around your surroundings. Eyes narrowing in confusion, you wondered, ‘Maybe I’m just hearing things?’

But then you heard it again, slightly louder. Curious, you set down your tupperware and stood up to investigate. You searched the enclosure, kneeling down to the ground every so often to scan the bushes for any signs of a potential furry friend. Still nothing. With a sigh, you got back onto your feet and brushed the dirt off your pants.‘Maybe they went away.’

However, you noticed a small wooden shed, presumably a garden supply closet, standing right outside the enclosure. You approached it cautiously. If there happened to be an animal nearby, the last thing you wanted to do was scare them away.

You stopped in your tracks when you heard a soft chuckle.

“Hey, there, little guy,” a mysterious voice spoke soothingly. “How’s it going?”

On the other side, a boy with light brown hair sat cross-legged with his back against the wooden toolshed. The back of his outstretched hand gingerly pet a grey tabby, who purred and rubbed its cheeks against his fingers. His chocolate gaze glimmered with amusement when the cat started playfully batting at a red keychain dangling from his backpack.

The cat climbed onto him. Leaping across his lap, its fluffy tail brushed against the male’s slightly open mouth. His face scrunched in disgust, and he sputtered in attempts to spit out stray strands of fur that stuck to his tongue. He wiped an arm across his mouth as an extra measure.

“Ugh, give me a warning next time, okay?” he chided, scratching the cat behind its ears.

You couldn’t stifle a soft snicker. Caught off guard, the boy stiffened and the cat dashed away, disappearing behind the opposite side of the shed.

Embarrassed and guilty for eavesdropping, you raised your hands in front of your face and spoke frantically, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt or scare your friend!”

‘Great, now you just look like a creep!’ you thought self-consciously as you took a sudden step back. A yelp escaped your throat when you felt the heel of your feet stoop lower than expected, and you stumbled back.

Though you braced yourself for impact, a quick tug of your arm catapulted you into the boy’s chest. He stepped back and placed his hands on your shoulders in an effort to regain balance. You stood in front of him, a mixture of shock and mortification evident on your red, open-mouthed face. He breathed out in exasperated relief, releasing the rush adrenaline pent up from the last several seconds. Finally settling his gaze on you, a faint rosy tinge dusted his cheeks and he released your shoulders.

He cleared his throat with a fist to his lips. “Ah, geez, watch where you’re going,” he chastised, pointing at the gaping indent in the grass behind you. “That hole’s a bit too big to go unnoticed.”

Your mind blanked. How humiliating was it to be caught staring then almost fall on your dumb ass if it wasn’t for this person’s mad reflexes.

Unable to think clearly, your words tumbled out. “Oh, hah, I guess you’re right! And, uh, thank you for catching me, by the way! You moved really fast, I was surprised, ahaha but really, I appreciate it! Especially after I was kinda standing here like a creep, you know, but it’s not like that..! I swear I don’t have stalker-ish tendencies, I was just having lunch and I thought I heard a cat and wanted to check it out, so I came here and found you, and uh, yeah!”

Heart racing in the midst of awkward silence, your eyes darted around and sought refuge upon the aging bark of a nearby tree. You would give anything to grab a shovel from the toolshed and dig yourself a hole, saying a friendly goodbye to the boy before you buried yourself alive in the dirt.

“You could’ve just said hi in the beginning, you know,” he responded with an amused, arched brow. Extending his hand, he said, “Morisuke Yaku. I go by Yaku. Nice to meet you, uh...”

“Y/n!” you blurted out, relief overwhelming your senses. “I-I’m y/n, it’s nice to meet you, too,” you shook his hand, hoping he’d ignore the nervous warmth of your palm. “Sorry again for scaring away the cat.”

He shrugged. “Don’t worry about it. Natsu always comes back. I usually come by around this time to give her some food.”

Kneeling down to look inside his pack, he pulled out a can of wet cat food. The mere pop of the can was enough for the grey tabby to come bounding back excitedly. Yaku smiled and set the food on the ground, giving Natsu a gentle stroke along her back. Glancing up at you, he offered, “Do you want to pet her? She’s really friendly.”

Your eyes lit up in pleasant surprise as you nodded. “Sure!”
