So— I grew up watching Life with Derek. Dasey was the first ship I ever shipped and I am CONVINCED it was like a girls gateway drug into the taboo. Still, as I got older, the show wasn’t running anymore and, even with the occasional fan video or fiction I would nostalgically/curiously indulge in (like a relapse), the whole thing felt like a fever dream.

Now, let’s fast forward a bit…

My husband and I are house sitting for my parents because they are on vacation. There is a Roku in the family room and, as I was scrolling through the random live TV options Roku had because why not I have time, I discover the surreal and unexpected Life with Derek CHANNEL. The whole channel is called Life with Derek and all it does is show episodes and clips from the show. So, of course, we know what I’m doing this summer.

My husband has heard me rant and rave about this show sporadically for years, but I don’t think he really understood, really believed the extent of the Dasey in this show. Even I doubted myself. Even with the fan vids/fics, I doubted that we all somehow weren’t projecting somehow like a form of mass hysteria.

BUT NO GUYS! THE DASEY IS REAL! We’ve been watching for a couple days now and… My husband is SCREAMING about this show now. It’s both hilarious and validating because SEE I TOLD YOU!

Anyway, we’ve gotten to the point that we are mostly watching reruns and would you believe me if I told you that my husband started looking for ways to stream Vacation with Derek unprompted, without me even mentioning it? Because he did. Of course VWD is next to being completely unavailable (except for something unlisted on YT because bless this fandom) but guess what we are doing this weekend!

Lol I never would have expected LWD to somehow bring me and my husband closer and become something that we would deep dive (and dissect and analyze) but here we are!

(Side note: we are watching Arrested Development right now, too, and don’t even get me started on whatever vibes are between Michael and Lindsay omfg)

I ship Derek and Casey; and I have since I was 13/14 years old.

Besides, Michael and Ashley ship Dasey & Joseph and Grace ship Hellcheer.

It's not our fault that Dasey and Hellcheer have amazing chemistry.

Have you ever noticed any pattern with your OTPs? Mine usually fall under Canon or "Would've Been Canon if the writers/creators had actually been paying attention". I know of at least 3 of my OTPs being should've beens. But I suppose that's what fandom is for. :) Any recurring favorite troupes? I've loved enemies to lovers for many years (I think I can trace the source). Love your Dasey fics! <3

Ooooh. Hm.

Most of my OTPs are, like yours, Canon and Should've Been Canon if the Writers Weren't Cowards (I'm looking at you, Stucky). I think ALL of them are Friends to Lovers -- and while people make the argument that Dasey is an Enemies to Lovers, I've always written and thought of them as an Enemies to Friends to Lovers. Because honestly, by the time we get to Season 4, those two are friends. They will NEVER admit it because they're stubborn (and Derek has big scary feelings and Casey is Cleopatra), but they ARE friends. They care about each other a lot.

Almost all of my OTPs are a team: they've been through trials and hardships together and they back each other up ("You can have my back any day;" "Or, you know, you could have mine.") I like banter. I like it when they genuinely enjoy spending time together.

They're best friends who also wanna bang. And isn't that beautiful?
