I'm listening to Shadow Hunter again and Maul remembers reading about the Talzin (the weird invisible-in-the-force worm thingo) on an obscure holonet site.
I have to wonder if maul is a supermassive troll on socials. I mean Plagueis mentions he has fuck all to do when not tasked with a mission or training.
The only thing more terrifying than Maul is the combined powers of his social media footprint and his search history.
#his search history contains things some would consider... unnatural#maul#darth maul#darth maul: shadowhunter#the snippets of character fluff are *chef's kiss*#shadow hunter#darth maul: shadow hunter

Why are you running a poll about gay disabled characters and allowing headcannons? Why not focus on canon lgbt characters with disabilities?
Sorry for taking so long to respond, but I wanted to wait until after Round One was posted. (Ignore the fact that it is several days after round 1 finished posting, I got busy). ((Extra update: lol this is such a late response I haven’t been doing like anything)). Also, sorry for such an extensive breakdown on an honest question, we just want to have this to refer to if we get more questions like this.
A quick breakdown: This post will have four parts: a practical explanation, an explanation more related to our blog set up, just a more philosophical explanation, and under the cut a breakdown of more headcannon like characters.
Practical Explanation:
So one of the reasons why we decided to allow more headcanon like characters is simply the logistics on defining what is more fanon or not is a pain. If you look down at the list you can see there’s an ambiguous section, and that’s because especially regarding sexuality/gender often times there is conflicting opinions/information from actors, producers, whatever. (Ex. Many of the Star Trek characters (their various propaganda has decent information.)) Additionally in the cases of especially Spock and to some extent Frodo them being read as queer has a really long history through the fandom, so to discount them from this feels a bit weird. There are also other cases where due to time period of the media specifically there aren’t gonna be specific terms for some disabilities or sexualities or genders. Overall, there is just a lot of gray areas, and to be like some noncanon stuff counts but others don’t is kinda a hard line to draw. (That being said we did reject a few characters for really not fitting, all characters in the showdown have a decent explanation for being here.)
Blog Set Up Explanation:
This is a little bit more rude (sorry). Honestly, from the get go we’ve established that noncanon characters would count, we didn’t get any complaints until we actually started the polls, and there’s not any way that they will be taken out at this point. If you don’t agree with who we let be in the showdown don’t vote for them.
Philosophical Explanation:
On a more philosophical basis, characters can still resonate with people as having similar stories/experiences to them even if they are not canonically LGBTQ or disabled. This is a place that is celebrating LGBTQ and disabled characters, and if a character’s experiences are important to you why shouldn’t they qualify?
Note about qualifications: characters with disabilities that get cured do count as disabled, also word of god counts as confirmation.
Having to sort this out was confusing as hell, apologies for any errors.
Characters that are not canonically disabled:
Sabran IX Berethnet (The Priory of the Orange Tree)
Robin Buckley (Stranger Things)
Rudyard Funn (Wooden Overcoats)
Characters that are really ambiguous/confusing:
Julian Bashir, Data, Elim Garak, Geordi La Forge (Star Trek)
Riku (Kingdom Hearts)
Kuruto Ryuki (AI: The Somnium Files- Nirvana Initiative)
Chu Sangwoo (Semantic Error)
Characters that are not canonically LGBTQ+:
Kaz Brekker (Six of Crows)
Saki Tenma (Project Sekai)
Kurogane (Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle)
Xiao Xingchen, Song Lan (The Untamed / Mo Dao Zu Shi)
Daan (Fear and Hunger)
Homura Akemi (Puella Magi Madoka Magica)
Patchouli Knowledge (Touhou Project)
Havelock Vetinari (Discworld)
Wayne Terrisborn (Mistborn)
Lapis Lazuli (Steven Universe)
Link (Legend of Zelda)
Qifrey (Witch Hat Atelier)
Viktor (Arcane)
Chicory (Chicory: A Colorful Tale)
Johnny Joestar (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run)
Schnn T’gai Spock, T’Poll, Keyla Detmer (Star Trek)
Chirrut Îmwe, Darth Maul (Star Wars)
Gaige (Borderlands)
Hiccup Haddock (How To Train Your Dragon)
Jem Carstairs (The Shadowhunter Chronicles)
Frodo Baggins (Lord of the Rings)
Eichi Tenshouin (Ensemble Stars!!)
Zuko (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
Bucky Barnes, Professor X, Matt Murdock (Marvel)
Hitori Gotoh (Bocchi the Rock!)
Jace Beleren (Magic: The Gathering)
Joly (Les Misérables)
Nodoka Hanadera (Healin’ Good Precure)
Arthur Lester (Malevolent Podcast)
Hearthstone (Magnus Chase)
Hebe Harrison (Doctor Who)
Hermann Gottlieb (Pacific Rim)
Harry Du Bois (Disco Elysium)
Merle Highchurch (The Adventure Zone)
Elphaba Thropp (Wicked)
Monkey D. Luffy and Roronoa Zoro (One Piece)
Ricky Potts (Ride the Cyclone)
Tokito Minoru (Wild Adapter)
Blade (Honkai Star Rail)

Went to a bookstore and found some old Star Wars novels in hardcover hehehehe, I'm gonna read them.
Shadows of the Empire and Star Wars: Death Star. Steve Perry is involved in both and since he wrote my favorite Alien vs. Predator books (the old ones that predate the movie), he can do no wrong in my eyes. Michael Reaves is involved in the Death Star one, and he wrote Darth Maul: Shadowhunter and therefore can do no wrong either.
Very excited to have found them at such a bargain price.
Also got a first edition copy of The Shape of Water which I'm stoked about.

I have a question: how old Nute and Rune are in the phantom menace? Do we have any info about it? If not how old you believe they are? It would help me for a fanfic I'm writing in which they are children and I'd like to have a date for it
If I had to guess, I would say Nute is mid/late 30s. He was described as a fast-rising star within the Trade Federation, and strikes me as a somewhat younger individual. Rune is probably mid/late 50s. Lott Dod I think is early 50s. So Nute is kind of the baby of the trio.
Unfortunately, I don’t think they would have crossed paths as children, but fics don’t necessarily have to be canon.
BUT, I like to believe that Nute and Lott Dod became good friends within the Federation (they speak to each other very cordially (Cloak of Deception), and Nute would have been instrumental in Dod’s appointment. Additionally, while Rune was imprsioned, Dod would have been working almost single-handedly to get them exonerated after Naboo). Nute and Rune, on the other hand, had a very tense working relationship (evidence in Darth Maul: Shadowhunter), but I like to believe that by the end of their lives, they developed an understanding, if not a friendship. There’s evidence within Labyrinth of Evil for this, in which Nute almost lowers himself to Rune, when they are escaping, by admitting that Rune not only warned him, but warned him correctly, about the Republic finding them.

How am I supposed to pick only one character for each fandom?? Like choosing between children 😭
1: Morgana, BBC Merlin
2: The Ninth Doctor, Doctor Who (clearly you have excellent taste in doctors, nerd)
3: Elide Lochan, Throne of Glass
4: Sirius Black, Harry Potter
5: Asami Sato, Legend of Korra
6: Aragon, Lord of the Rings
7: Emma Carstairs, The Shadowhunters Chronicles
8: Master Harper Robinton, The Dragonriders of Pern
9: Yvaine, Stardust
10: Padmé Amidala, Star Wars
BONUS
Ahsoka Tano and Darth Maul
Ok, that was difficult, mostly because when asked to name fandoms I suddenly forget all media I've ever consumed. Thanks for the tag @ramblingsofachristiannerd !! It's 530AM here so I am too half asleep to think whom to tag. Everyone is welcome of course!!
Ten Characters, Ten Fandoms, Ten Tags
I was tagged to do this by @redvelvetrevolver yeet (Do some of these even count as fandoms? Idk. If it’s something t, that’s a fandom, right?)
Erik Carriere - Phantom of the Opera
Nick Valentine - Fallout 4
Wilson P. Higgsbury - Don’t Starve
Sherlock Holmes - Jeremy Brett ftw
Sir Percy Blakeney - The Scarlet Pimpernel
V - V for Vendetta
Shane - Stardew Valley
Edward - Twilight (I regret nothing, I refuse)
Data - Star Trek TNG
Sans - Undertale
Wow, I’m kind of basic I guess ;-; Also, these are all men?? Is that weird??? Idk.

Maultober day 1: disguise. Cheating a little bit becuase i need to draw day 2 and im behind. 😅 This is a sketch based of some great tweets theorizing what darth sidious and Maul's "tourist" disguises would have looked like when they toured the jedi temple in Darth Maul: Shadowhunter. Since reading the book ive realized that maul was a kid and id like to redraw it seriously but today is not that day #maultober

For the meme: why do you like Darth Maul?
This long infatuation started just because I thought he looked cool: the martial arts moves were snappy, the facepaint was #aesthetic, and I thought the actor was stunning. As a teenager in a small town I read more about Maul’s early life and could identify with the feelings of entrapment, of waiting for one’s purpose - Shadowhunter was this twitchy journey of unstoppable irritability. Since then I’ve achieved enough autonomy to not go quite so whole-heartedly in for the catharsis, but still like him as a sort of reversal of heroes like Luke Skywalker. Maul was always told that he had a great destiny, dedicated his entire life to fulfilling it, and never did. And then instead of learning a lesson about appreciating everyday life (an important lesson in its own merit, and one it’s sometimes difficult for me to grapple!) Maul just kept going. He fought as many different factions in the galaxy as he could. (I always love the characters who just. Won’t. Die. RIP Ventress, ∞.) Part of why I was so agog over Maul's final (?) death in Rebels was that he was both never painted as a hero /and/ died feeling that his purpose had been fulfilled. But that’s a tangent for another post. ^_^

LGBTQ Disabled Characters in the Showdown Currently
Notes:
1.) This list is subject to change; before we start the showdown there will be another post with all confirmed characters. Characters are under the cut.
2.) If you see a character on here and you want to submit propaganda for them the form will still be open.
3.) If you think of a character that is not on the list you can still submit them in our form found here. If you submitted a character and they are not on the list, it might be an error on our part, but first check here to see what characters we rejected and why. More about submissions here.
4.) Submissions after this post will be open at least until August 10, but this could be extended. The only way this could be shortened is if we get 192 or more characters, but that seems unlikely. There will be around 12 hours notice before submission close.
5.) The categories are just a way to sort out characters in a more efficient way, they have no factor on matchups for the showdown.
6.) If you think a character doesn’t qualify, you can ask us and we can show you the explanation we have for that character and why they count. That being said, some of the character’s qualifications are up to personal opinion.
7.) If there is a character you think is problematic on here you can shoot us an ask, but just know that it’s not a competition of who is the best representation.

I suspect the ones I'm most curious about have been asked already, but hm. I'd be interested in hearing what you look for in a Darth Maul.
(For this meme.)
1) Maul is single-minded. He has such tunnel vision about Jedi that he goes after them instead of Padmé, his actual target. It isn’t so much that Maul is unable to plan ahead as that he has been trained to have an almost pavlovian hatred of the Jedi; he topples an entire Mandalorian social structure in order to draw Obi-Wan into the open. (This is one of the areas in which The Clone Wars and I disagree on how exactly Maul would go about this, but that’s a story for another time, and one you’ve probably already heard.) His CV would say that he is results-oriented.
Therefore, any moral qualm he would have would not be one of heart but one of mind. In what circumstance might he discover that kind actions actually generate quicker results than murder does? We’ll see what the new comic has to say about that. On a related note …
2) Maul is well-read. Raised in secret for a mission he was never really meant to complete, Maul spent a lot of his time studying. These studies were probably focused on combat arts from around the galaxy and how to counter them, but he would also need a thorough knowledge of alien biology, a working knowledge of the cultures that spoke relatively common galactic languages such as Basic and Bocce, and some less common languages. It would do no good for a spy to make a social faux pas because he is not just disinterested in, but also ignorant of, graces. Some of Maul’s silence is rooted in his personality and some of it is strategic.
(Also, I learned the word “myrmidon” from Darth Maul: Shadowhunter and so I associate him with SAT words.)
3) His feelings about Darth Sidious are … complicated. One of the fun quirks (?) of Sith philosophy is that fury can start to look like devotion. It’s the flip side of the idea that every apprentice must one day overthrow her master; Maul’s attempts to get back in Sidious’ good graces after he is abandoned (several times) during the Clone Wars look like a desire for revenge and control, but at the same time they are an attempt to impress Sidious enough that he’ll invite Maul back willingly. In a sense, Sidious trained the boy to be too loyal.
By the time of Rebels, when Maul has been alive long enough to understand that Sidious has truly discarded him, this feeling turns into a generalized sense of anger at the universe. Maul’s victory was yanked out from under him, and he’s always aware of that.

The Darth Maul comic continues to be thoroughly decent; for every misstep in dialogue there's some characterization I think fits perfectly. (After a couple issues of tiptoeing around it, he actually used the word "anxious" in #3.) The Jedi Padawan hardly has any characterization at all, unfortunately. It's all very Shadowhunter lite, without doing anything egregiously offensive either.
