âMaybe Happy Endingâ: Darren Crissâ New Musical Shows the Lovesick Side of AI
Whether heâs standing under the glare of a spotlight on a Broadway stage, or perched in front of an open window at a bustling Nolita coffeeshop, one fact stays the same: Darren Criss practically vibrates with energy. And that observation isnât just because Criss currently stars in the new Broadway musical Maybe Happy Ending, where in a world filled with robots, energy is everything.
Criss plays Oliver, a life-like âHelper-Botâ living out his lifespan in a small apartment in Seoul, Korea. For all his robotic tendencies, stiff limbs, and jointed movements, Oliver is clear from his very first song that he cherishes his simple, unwavering routine: chatting with his potted plant Hwaboon, listening to old jazz records, and waiting for mail from his owner James. But when Claire (Helen J. Shen), the Helper-Bot across the hall, crashes into his life because of her broken charger, the twoâs budding friendship and matching dream to visit South Koreaâs famed JeJu island catapults them onto a journey about the importance of memories and the complex nature of love.Â
Written by Hue Park and composed by Will Aronson, Maybe Happy Ending is a charming addition to a Broadway scene usually dominated by revivals and shows based on established intellectual property â with Crissâ performance giving Oliver passion and heartbreaking depth that feels like it should be impossible for a battery-powered assistant. But what shows the musicalâs strength and staying power is its extremely dedicated online fandom, also known as Fireflies, who have used word of mouth posts on TikTok, Reddit, and Tumblr to drive up ticket sales and take the musical from scrappy newcomer to a Tony contender. And whether itâs kismet or something more magical, thereâs something incredibly significant about a musical thriving from its online fandom being led by an actor whose career is defined by them. Criss tells Rolling Stone he doesnât take lightly how much fans feel attached to the Broadway musical. After all, he was a fan first.Â
âYou donât go to school for this,â Criss says, black-painted fingernails curled in front of a shot of espresso. âNothing can prepare you for the oddness and the beauty of [fandom]. Itâs a mutating organism. I get it. And whenever anyone wants to be a part, Iâm very grateful, because I know what is driving that engine.â
When Criss exits the stage door left of the Belasco theater after a performance of Maybe Happy Ending, itâs always unclear which version of the 38-year-old people are cheering for. The average person might recognize the actor for his time on the Ryan Murphy teen-comedy Glee, where he played a cappella group leader Blaine Anderson, love interest of Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer). Thereâs also Murphyâs 2018 FX limited series The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, for which Criss took home a Primetime Emmy for his portrayal of killer Andrew Cunanan. Heâs also been on Broadway for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Chess, Hedwig and The Angry Inch, and American Buffalo. But what the layman might not be aware of is Crissâ digital start via the now-famous YouTube musical theater group Team Starkid. He played boy wonder Harry Potter in Starkidâs theater parody A Very Potter Musical, which was filmed during he and his friendsâ final semester at the University of Michigan. The show went viral on YouTube in 2009 â kickstarting Team Starkidâs presence online as a generation-defining digital theater company.Â
Before A Very Potter Musical was quintessential YouTube history, it was the schoolâs annual basement musical theater show for âshits and giggles.â His senior year, Criss played Potter and wrote several songs two days before the show. Because they performed in a classroom that was set up with performance cameras and mics, the group convinced lead writers Nick and Matt Lang to cut the footage together, which ended up on a DVD the group gathered to watch together. After graduation, the friends decamped to different cities, but people kept asking to be sent the DVD. So Criss uploaded it to YouTube to save money on postage. âIt was literally just a means to share with our friends, unaware that anybody outside of our dumb group of friends would be interested in this very niche thing,â he says. âBut I just remember waking up and getting a notification that we were the number one subscribed channel in 50 countries.âÂ
While Criss describes the experience of going viral during such an early stage of the internet as âuniquely terrifying,â he also notes that his jumpstart into the online world with Starkid has made him realize just how rare it is that collaborations with friends not only succeed but are well received. Maybe Happy Endingâs director Michael Arden is married to Crissâ college classmate, Andy Mientus, who was an associate director of the showâs first run in Atlanta. Crissâ co-star Shen is also a recent graduate of the University of Michigan and Criss describes her as both an actress with âsupernova potential,â and a dear friend.Â
âThe thing that scared us about [Starkid] at first was the thing that ended up being a huge asset to us, which was this sort of scrappy, me and my friends quality to it,ââ Criss says. âItâs a moment of great pride and joy for me, because it was what you dream about, which is like, âOh, if I could just make stuff with my friends.â With a lifetime of creating stuff, I know the feeling of being into [a project] when other people arenât, or vice versa. But Iâve loved this show since we started making it, and the fact that other people responded to it is really validating.â
Even if there was a good way to spoil the magic of the show â there isnât â it would be a disservice to try here. But Criss, a father of two, calls Maybe Happy Ending âthe greatest possible thing that could be happening to me and my family creatively, spiritually, emotionally and mentally,â because the schedule allows him to have time with his wife and kids. âThese are very valuable years I will not get back,â he says. âAnd Iâm keenly aware of that, so I get very emo about this very beautiful moment in my life.â But itâs not just a return to Broadway for the actor, itâs a return to the very theater where he starred in Hedwig and the Angry Inch in 2016, but with a friend making her Broadway debut.Â
âThe fact that Helen and I are now just sharing this moment, and that marquee, thereâs a real poetry to it,â he says. âI get to behold this staggering Broadway debut. I think this is gonna be one of those moments that we talk about many years from now. âOh, I saw Sutton [Foster] in this,â or âI saw Audra [McDonald] in this.â I saw Helen in this eight times a week. And I had the best seat in the house.â
Fandom aside, Maybe Happy Ending also has a clear draw with the prescient questions it raises about artificial intelligence and the idea of planned obsolescence in an actively growing tech field. Yes, that doesnât sound particularly conducive to a no-intermission musical helmed by a talented predominantly Asian-American cast and a jazzy, romantic score. But thatâs the sheer surprise of Maybe Happy Ending, which manages to tackle giant thoughts of romance, trash, and a human devotion to tech, all within an hour and 40 minutes.Â
âI got asked a question today, like, âHow soon do you think [robot helpers] are gonna happen?â And I was like âIt happens now,â We have emotional relationships with our technology,â Criss says. âYou lose your phone in a fucking cab, you go insane. Your phone is an extension of yourself, for better or for worse. I always tell people like when theyâre trying to get their head around the pitch for the show, âWell, how many old iPhones do you have in a drawer?â How many old pieces of technology do you keep for reasons beyond rational belief systems? We ascribe parts of ourselves into these things that are part of our story, and we canât let them go.âÂ
Broadway fandoms arenât something that can simply be manufactured to help with a showâs appeal. Theater is a notoriously inaccessible medium, with filmed versions either expensive or entirely unavailable. Itâs an art that is experienced best in person. But that proximity can also bring a bit of a taboo about digital fans, where their fervor and intensity can put off actors or creatives. Criss notes that while this can seem weird to some, he always encourages people to double down on the love for their interests. After all, he says his intense love of musicians and movies is what got him to this stage in the first place.
âPeople say âDonât chase your heroes.â No,â Criss says . âWait outside of buses for them. Go to a store and get your sneakers signed by them. Keep track of what theyâre doing. And then cultivate your mind and your skill set to get to a level where your abilities put [you] in a room with them. Thatâs the way the inspiration wheel works.âÂ

Hello, i´m Rubi, but everyone can call me Angel. I´m a very fan of musicals, my actuly obsesion is Hedwig and the Angry Inch, i like to write, sing, acting, compose and draw/painting. Lately, i´ve been felling a little loney; that´s why i decide to open tumblr.
I´m non-binary, a Drag Queen/King, a Gleek, I write essays and fanfics, i´m new on internet, inglish it´s not my native lenguage.
I´ve been planning write a little history about HATAI, i´m in love w Hedwig and I don´t see people writing about how beautiful she is, so, my plan is a history about Reader x Hedwig; It would only be the beginning of all the things I write, I have many things in the draft (not in English) but I would like to see if I am accepted.
With love, late at night, hoping someone reads this, Kristal.

now that i'm not an obsessed middle schooler and can mostly see past the bias can i say ngl i don't think i really like andrew rannells as hedwig... 14 year old me would have been out for my blood if they heard me say that but it's true he's honestly too perfect it feels less like a concert how it's supposed to and more like a deliberate broadway show with him. which is why i honestly prefer john cameron mitchell (originated ofc so how could i not) and michael c hall because they both play the role a lot more. imperfectly i guess and that's what i love about it
#like honestly mch bias too BUT i don't even really like his voice and for some reason that's what works about it for me#from what i remember the same about this post applies to several of the other hedwigs ive seen boots of in the past#like darren criss and. god bless her but lena hall was way too fucking perfect to be hedwig she was just too good

From Hedwig to Helperbot: Darren Criss Looks Back on His Stage Journey
Itâs nap time for Darren Crissâs newborn son, Brother, when the Glee star hops on our video chat. The cameraâs off, but he quickly turns it on to say hello face-to-face dressed in workout clothes â a green sleeveless top and a ball cap â as he tries to do some chores at the same time.
Criss has a limited window at home as he prepares to star in the new musical Maybe Happy Ending, now playing at Broadwayâs Belasco Theatre. The story, with book, music, and lyrics by Will Aronson and Hue Park, takes place 100 years in the future in Seoul, South Korea. Criss plays Oliver, an obsolete Belperbot along the lines of Siri or Google, âexcept more human-like, who is definitely past his prime and has been just waiting [in a Helperbot retirement facility] for his owner to pick him up,â Criss describes to Broadway Direct of the role. He stars opposite rising star Helen J Shen, who plays Oliverâs retired Helperbot neighbor. âIt almost feels like two people in an old-folksâ home trying to connect with a family member.â
The plot sounds dramatic, but âmake no mistake: This is a musical. Itâs a musical comedy,â says Criss. âIt has a lot of heart and a lot of joy and a lot of humor and amazing music, and itâs a hell of a spectacle.â
His friend Michael Arden, who won a Tony Award for his direction of Parade, was a big reason for Criss to sign on to the project â and serve as an executive producer as well. Arden brought the show to Crissâs attention many years ago, and again recently when Criss was starring in Little Shop of Horrors Off-Broadway.
âThis had been kind of percolating for a while, and between the pandemic and strikes and just a lot of other things, that really comes down to timing. So the stars just kind of aligned,â Criss says.
Criss, a figure on Broadway for well over a decade, started to gather a following while at University of Michigan as a founding member of Team StarKid, the student-run theater company behind the viral Harry Potter musical parody A Very Potter Musical. His big break came on the hit Fox TV show Glee back in 2010. The show had already aired for a full season before he was cast as Warbler Blaine Anderson and future love interest to Chris Colferâs Kurt Hummel. If not for Glee, he believes his career would not have had the same trajectory.
âI felt like this was my masterâs in performance of music on camera,â Criss says, admitting that, until Glee, he didnât consider himself a singer â rather, a musician who acted. âI have that show to thank for giving me any headway in the musical-theater space.â
In the middle of filming Glee in 2012, his Broadway debut called. Criss was asked to succeed Daniel Radcliffe in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying for three weeks during a winter break from filming Glee. âI left on, like, a Friday night from my last day of shooting. I started rehearsal on a Saturday. Within 10 days, I was on a Broadway stage. I left my Sunday matinee, got on the plane, and went to work [at Glee] Monday morning as if nothing had happened. So it was a bit of a fever dream. It goes by as quickly as it came, like all other moments in life.â
Three years later, Criss stepped into his next Broadway role. This time, he played Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch for about two and half months, succeeding John Cameron Mitchell. âPeople always ask me, âWhatâs your dream role?â Iâm like, âI kind of did it,ââ he says of the opportunity. âHedwig was a role I always loved so much when I was a teenager, and getting to jump into it was so special to me and my wife. We both love Hedwig so much. Itâs a big part of our relationship.â
More recently on Broadway, Criss starred in the play American Buffalo with Laurence Fishburne and Sam Rockwell in 2022 for a three-month limited run. âI completely idolized them,â he says of his scene partners. âI mean, if you see a pattern here, I recommend this to everybody, to just chase their heroes. Iâve just been chasing my heroes my whole life, and Iâm not being bashful about it at all.â
Getting Rachel Evan Wood to play Audrey opposite Crissâs Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors at the Westside Theatre earlier this year was something that he says was his idea.
âI pitched her pretty hard,â he said of getting casting directors to choose the Westworld actress as his costar. âWhen they heard her sing, I think it was very clear that this wasnât like a favor to anybody. She was doing us a favor. The fact that she said yes just blew my mind.â The role of the nerdy floral shop worker wasnât something Criss thought heâd get the opportunity to add to his rĂŠsumĂŠ âbecause it just was never something that I thought anybody would let me do. ⌠I wasnât sprinting to that in the way that I was the other things in my life.â
Criss welcomed Brother, his second baby, this past June with his wife Mia. The timing couldnât be more coincidental, since their first, Bluesy, was born during his run of American Buffalo.
As our conversation comes to a close, Criss says he kind of got all of his chores done and haphazardly put things away and folded laundry. The next project he wants to pursue is his writing, something he hasnât tackled much in five years. Until then, heâs reveling in Maybe Happy Ending.
âI do find myself at a loss for words, trying to truly put into words how special this experience has been,â he adds. âI think it really is a thing of beauty that can really add quite a bit of ornamentation in perhaps a grim world.â
