Jack Kelly: We have had a lot of people come through our doors over the past 11 years at Tin Pan Alley. Last night is one to remember for life. After Darren Criss did a two hour show at town hall last night. Over an hour with the folks that paid for a meet and greet with him. He came to Tin Pan Alley and asked “ can I play a set when the piano player is finished“ He played a full hour. Don’t get me going on his wife Mia Criss. Two of the kindest humble people. Thank you both. Can’t wait to see you again soon.

A review of old VoicePlay Christmas music, part 1
(This was split just because there were like 20 songs total that I listened to, and I didn't want the post becoming overly long. Go find part 2 HERE)
So basically there's a fair few old (or at least older) covers of Christmas songs by VoicePlay that I've either never heard or just have only listened to once or twice and since have forgotten about them completely. And literally everywhere and everyone around me has decided that Christmas season has well and truly begun (plus we don't do Thanksgiving in Australia), so like, I might as well make this the first Christmas music I voluntarily listen to this season, and make a post about it! (I'm bored and my blog has been quiet anyway).
(Note: I know at least a few of these tracks have videos to go with, but some are just audio, and so I'm just gonna stick to the audio tracks for all of them to keep it fair)
Title: Winter Wonderland Released: 2004, on the Unstoppable EP Am I familiar with this song? Heck yeah, I love this song! Thoughts: Wow they've always had a fondness for the old-timey radio effect huh? (Not criticizing though). Oh hello new lyrics? Where did these come from? Also the audio track on Spotify has like two minutes of complete silence at the end of it, which is odd.
Overall, it's neat, but personally I'd stick with a more "classic" version (unless of course VoicePlay wanna do a new version this year? 👀)
Title: Deck The Halls Released: 2012, on the Peppermint Winter album Am I familiar with this song? Of course! Thoughts: Oh hey Tony! (I'm sure it's absolutely a coincedence that Earl got the first "don we now our gay apparel" line) Omg Geoff <3 (sounds a bit different to how he does now, but that was still a really nice vocal line). And would that be Layne doing his sleigh bells impression? Hello remix version! And old-timey radio effect again! Kinda)
Sure, I'd relisten to that one, definitely one for the (currently hypothetical) Christmas playlist. Just wish it was longer!
Title: Holiday Road Released: 2012, on the Peppermint Winter album Am I familiar with this song? Nope Thoughts: Ooh they did some fancy audio mixing effects on this one! (Like when you're wearing headphones sometimes you hear some parts in one ear and then other parts in the other ear!) Oh a switch to Sleigh Ride? Lit! (Ngl I typically prefer covers that do the "ring-a-ling-a-ling-a-ding-a-ling bit, but eh minor nitpick). Okay I just looked up "Holiday Road", and oh it's from the movie National Lampoon's Vacation, and based on the OG lyrics, this "Sleigh Ride" interspersal is VoicePlay's doing! And hi again Geoff <3
Yeah this one kinda slaps actually, definitely another one for the playlist!
Title: I'm Dreaming Of A White Christmas Released: 2012, on the Peppermint Winter album Am I familiar with this song? I mean duh Thoughts: Look, obviously I'm biased because of Geoff's solo cover, but I didn't wanna skip over this one regardless. I don't wanna be critical of this one, but basically Geoff has really honed his skills and improved a lot since 2012, and we love that for him... OH WAIT I FORGOT ABOUT THIS SPOKEN BIT *PFFT* (I've listened to this track maybe once or twice before in the past?) Yeah, one thing that hasn't changed much: Geoff's sense of humour! XD
Obviously Geoff's solo cover from 2022 still reigns supreme for me, but this one was good for a giggle if nothing else!
Title: Santa Claus Is Coming To Town (ft. Michael Andrew) Released: 2012, on the Peppermint Winter album Am I familiar with this song? Absolutely! Thoughts: I'm sorry are they singing "Batman's coming", or is it meant to be "fat man's coming"? Also I don't know who Michael Andrew is but damn he's got the perfect voice for this! Like Robbie Williams or Michael Buble or whatever - he's got a very "classic/vintage" singing voice here! Omg they're mixing in bits from The Man With A Bag? Yes! I love that song! (There's specifically a cover by Darren Criss and Adam Lambert that I love, but that's for a post on my other blog). And YES GEOFF YES! He sounded so "natural" on his vocal line here, like he wasn't trying too hard to reach for lower notes, and it was wonderful. Hey I don't know some of these lyrics from Santa Claus Is Coming To Town? Where (or perhaps whom) did they come from?
10/10, no notes, love this one, throw it on the playlist! (Which I've just made)
Title: Christmas Island Released: 2012, on the Peppermint Winter album Am I familiar with this song? Not in the slightest Thoughts: Unrelated to the song, but fun fact: the actual Christmas Island is an external territory of Australia! Oh hello trumpet(?) imitations? Whom??? Earl and someone else? Oh I'm so biased to Geoff lol rip. I hear him start singing and immediately I go from :) to :D!!!!!!
Sure, that was nice. Good as background music I guess, but I'm leaving it off the playlist
Title: Season's Greetings Released: 2012, on the Peppermint Winter album Am I familiar with this song? I don't think so? Idk we'll see when I listen to it Thoughts: Wait is this an original VoicePlay Christmas song? Because I tried looking it up and the only other songs with that title are a lot more recent - i.e. I can't find any previous version! Who wrote these lyrics then? Was it Geoff?
I mean I feel like this one has to go on the playlist just by pure virtue of the fact that I'm pretty sure it's original.
Title: Here Comes Santa Claus Released: 2012, on the Peppermint Winter album Am I familiar with this song? For sure! Thoughts: "Here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus - down Santa Claus layne!" They removed the word "right" and just made it a pause instead? Getting deja vu from Thriller ngl. Oh they're adding in bits of Up On The Housetop/Rooftop? Man VoicePlay be loving mashups in their Christmas covers, huh? (Not that I'm complaining - it honestly slaps). Oh go off Tony! I'm sorry Layne what was that beatboxing breakdown/changeup thing?
Hm, I'm not sure actually. I think I'll add it to the playlist, might as well, but eh
Title: Have A Holly Jolly Christmas Released: 2012, on the Peppermint Winter Album Am I familiar with this song? Definitely Thoughts: Hey Tony! :D Ooh whistling! Is that Tony as well? It's pretty good! (One thing I can't do whatsoever - I can't whistle! At least with finger clicks I can "cheat", but no such workaround for whistling, rip). "He's a rootin' tootin' Santa Claus" sorry what? Okay I just looked it up and apparently "Rootin Tootin Santa Claus" is an old song by Tennessee Ernie Ford! (Hey Geoff! I got a new Christmas song idea for ya!)
Sure, that can get a spot in the playlist - it's not often that I listen to stuff with Tony getting a lot of lead vocals, but it's nice!
Title: Left to Right Released: 2012, on the Peppermint Winter Album Am I familiar with this song? Not a dang clue what this is! Thoughts: Oh so that's why I don't know this song! It's a Hanukkah song! Honestly good for them - when two out of five of your group members are Jewish, you might as well do something for Hanukkah as well! (And thus it's fitting that Eli gets lead vocals for this one).
I don't feel right putting this song on my Christmas album, because of the obvious, but this is definitely a great song cover regardless!
Okay, that's part 1, now onto part 2!

An ask meme / sentence starters based on lyrics from some songs I really like for this time of year!
The “//” means the other part is OPTIONAL! You can add that or make it it’s own thing entirely!
Under the Cut since there’s going to be quite a few...
► Cold December Night — Michael Bublé
With a heart on board so please be careful
Each year I ask for many different things
But now I know what my heart wants you to bring
So please just fall in love with me // this Christmas
I want something that lasts forever
So kiss me on this cold December night
Let's cozy on up by a fireplace
Dim those Christmas lights
I'm here, I'm yours for the taking
'Cause I don't wanna be alone tonight
► Beautiful Christmas — Big Time Rush
We'll decorate the halls with love and cheer
Under the mistletoe, Oh I've been waiting all year
As long as I got you here
► Baby, It’s Cold Outside — Michael Bublé & Idina Menzel
I really can't stay
This evening has been so very nice
I wish I knew how to break this spell
Mind if I move in closer?
You're very pushy, you know
I'd like to think of it as opportunistic
Gosh, your lips look delicious
But maybe just another dance more
Never such a blizzard before
You've really been grand but don't you see?
There's bound to be talk tomorrow
► Last Christmas — Ariana Grande’s Ver.
I hate that I remember
You left my heart a mess
But the very next day, you gave it away
I'll give it to someone special
Thought we belong together
I should have known better
You broke my heart with no warnin'
► All I want for Christmas is You — Michael Bublé’s Ver.
You broke my heart with no warnin'
I just want you for my own // more than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
No, I'm just gonna keep on waiting // underneath the mistletoe
I just want you here tonight // Holding on to me so tight
► Santa Tell Me — Ariana Grande
Don't make me fall in love again // if he won't be here next year
I'm trying to play it cool
It's hard to focus when I see [him/her/you] walking 'cross the room
I won't get in the mood
I'm avoiding every mistletoe // until I know it's true love that [he/she/you] think of
I've been down this road before
Fell in love on Christmas night
I woke up and [he/she/you] [wasn't/weren’t] by my side
Now I need someone to hold
it's hard to tell if this is just a fling or if it's true love
► Like It’s Christmas — Jonas Brothers
This is what it's all about
But as long as you're with me // It's always that time of the year
I can't deny what I'm feelin' inside
Nothin' fake about the way you bring me to life
Everyday that I'm with you
► This Christmas — China Anne McClain Ver.
I'm gonna get to know you better
How much fun it's gonna be together
Your eyes outshine the town, they do
► The Man With The Bag — Darren Criss ft. Adam Lambert Ver.
You're alright? Just alright? // Whaddya mean alright?
I just don't know how much longer I can wait
Hey, if it makes you feel any better
► Mistletoe — Justin Bieber
I'ma be under the mistletoe
I can't stop staring at your face
The way I followed my heart // And it led me to a miracle
'Cause I am feeling one thing // your lips on my lips
Kiss me underneath the mistletoe
Show me, baby, that you love me so
► Sleigh Ride — Meghan Trainor Ver.
it's lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with you
Our cheeks are nice and rosy // and comfy cozy are we
We're snuggled up together // likе two birds of a feather would be
► I Don’t Wanna Spend Another Christmas Without You — The Ready Set
I have you on my mind
I wish you could be here tonight
So I could kiss you
So I could hold you one more time
All the signs seem to point in your direction all the time
I wish I could see you again
Because I never know // when you will be here with me

CHARACTER INFORMATION
face claim: Darren Criss
full name: Jamie Christopher Mariadaga-Evans
nickname(s): J, Miko (close family)
pronouns & gender: he/him & cisman
sexuality: bisexual
birth date: October 27, 1989
birth place: San Francisco, CA
time in town: six years
housing: Historical Downtown District
occupation: Registered Nurse
family: none
personality: He can be a bit shy at first, but usually easily warms up to people. Close friends will always know him for being supportive and loyal, even if there are times where he’s a little stubborn.
BACKGROUND / BIO
Jamie was born in San Francisco, California, to a military man and a stay-at-home mom. his childhood was pretty typical, and the kids were involved in all sort of extra curriculars at school. come high school, he was involved in a lot, including the school plays, played lacrosse, did science club, advanced classes. He found that he loved science and decided to pursue that as a project going into his senior year of high school.
It looked easy from an outsider’s point of view, but the family didn’t reveal their struggles openly, even to their children. they just heard it from down the hall. Rather, Jamie did, being the youngest at the time, where his older siblings had already left for college. His picture perfect family was on the verge of slowly tearing apart. It would only be so long before that happened. And the next thing he knew, his dad was getting remarried, and he’d have a step-mom and two younger step-siblings.
Shortly after the wedding, he left for college to study nursing at UCLA. It was a tough program, but he had made a lot of friends in school, as home life had been getting him down. Even with the heavy workload, he managed, doing his best to keep his grades up to stay in the program. The motivation was that he could somehow make a difference. At least in L.A., he had a bit more freedom to have some fun when he wasn’t studying or working. Being about 45 minutes away from Disney? Not bad. Still. he really missed his mom, who had moved closer to her side of the family across the country shortly after the divorce, while he had stayed in California for college.
During his years at UCLA, he met someone who ended up being his first serious boyfriend. It felt like a brand new relationship for a while, until he realized the guy had been cheating on him. That hit him harder than how it felt going through family drama, but he had to act fast. His grades had started to slip, and without that high GPA, he was out of the program. But after a little more soul searching, he was back on his feet and finally graduated.
After graduation, he went to Maine to live closer to his mom and her side of the family, where he took his first job after graduating nursing school, and was reunited with a friend he had made in Los Angeles and has lived there since.

Yellow 💛
Thank you so much gorgeous! I love this question, even though it's very difficult to answer because there are so many artists and styles of music that I really adore and that I think are very underappreciated. To briefly name off a few: Logan Smith, The Cab, Set it Off.
I could stop there, but I think there are some particular songs that could do with more love and attention—and oh my god what have you started, I'm about to waffle on about music again! Haha.
I've already mentioned to you RIOPY's I Love You, so I won't go into too much detail, but I cannot begin to express how much I love this piece, it's gorgeous in every which way. Similarly, I think one of my favourite piano pieces right now is A Heart Made of Yarn by Franz Gordon, I discovered it in May some time and I'm still in love with it. Honestly, I think I need to put together a playlist on Spotify of my favourite instrumental works because the list is steadily growing.
Now some songs from a musical I love.
Wicked Little Town and Midnight Radio from Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
The amount of love I have for this musical is monumental, and these two songs in particular always make me feel a whirlwind of emotions, and every time I see a live recording of these songs being performed I get goosebumps and tear up all the time. I want to give a special mention to Darren Criss' performance of (well, every song really, he was phenomenal) but in particular his version of Wicked Little Town Reprise and Midnight Radio is my favourite. Also special shout out to Lena Hall who is incredible as well.
Rapid fire round because I don't want to continue boring everyone with me rattling on.
Vegas Skies by the Cab — I could have a whole new post detailing every which reason why I am in love with this song. Listen to it, it's gorgeous.
I see the Light from Tangled — No one at all should be surprised, but this movie in general is underrated and is one of my favourite Disney songs.
Miss Mysterious by Set it Off — The ending of this song gives me chills and has always been very dear to my heart. The drums that kick in in the second verse, his voice... It's masterful, and it's probably one of my favourite songs to play on the piano.
Not Alone by Darren Criss (Starkid Homecoming Version) — Probably not as underrated in the HP community for those who remember the Potter musicals, but this live version in particular is phenomenal and one of my favourite live versions of this song. The accompanying band is glorious.
When you asked this question, I'm pretty sure you expected a pretty short answer, but I couldn't help myself. I get too excited when sharing music lmao, but you already know that. Hopefully there's something you like in here. xx

Sense8
Sense8, the Netflix science fiction series about eight strangers with a psychic connection to each other, traveled around the globe in its fight against the nefarious Biologic Preservation Organization and the diabolical villain Whispers. But beyond the dazzling cinematography and action sequences was a simple message: Humans, regardless of their race, ethnicity, language, sexual orientation, and gender identity, are interconnected. Created by the Wachowski siblings, the show had a diverse cast including several LGBTQ performers, such as Jamie Clayton and Brian J. Smith, who recently came out as gay. A dazzling scene at São Paulo Pride also featured a game-changing kiss between a closeted actor, Lito Rodriguez (Miguel Ángel Silvestre) and his partner Hernando (Alfonso Herrera), which delivered an empowering message to the streaming universe about the power of love and visibility. As did the infamous orgy scenes!
~~~~~~~~~~
Tumblr media
Looking
Created by Michael Lannon, Looking took the torch from Tales of the City in its showcase of gay life in San Francisco. Through the eyes of Patrick (Jonathan Groff), a 29-year-old navigating life and love in the Golden Gate City, the HBO dramedy explored many issues impacting (then) modern queer life, including PrEP, serodiscordant dating, generational divides, and the advent of marriage equality. The show was sadly canceled after two seasons (and a two-hour finale special), but it remains a beautiful love letter to S.F. and its vibrant queer history and present. The cast (Groff, Frankie J. Alvarez, Murray Bartlett, Russell Tovey, Raúl Castillo, and Lauren Weedman) wasn’t bad to look at either!
~~~~~~~~~~
Tumblr media
Schitt's Creek
Schitt’s Creek is a bright spot on the comedy landscape. Created by Eugene Levy (Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind) and his son Daniel Levy, who is gay, Schitt’s Creek brims with absurdist humor that’s (mostly) sadly missing from pop culture these days. The series, about a wealthy family that loses it all and is forced to rebuild in the podunk town they happen to own, stars Eugene Levy as the patriarch of the family opposite his frequent on-screen partner Catherine O’Hara, who plays his kooky, over-the-top wife Moira. Daniel Levy plays the family's pansexual son David while the wonderful Annie Murphy stars as their bizarrely worldly daughter Alexis. Over the seasons, David has engaged in relationships with men and women on the show, including the town’s motel’s owner Stevie, played by out actress Emily Hampshire. Loaded with camp and a queer sensibility, Schitt’s Creek continues to be a panacea for the daily news cycle.
~~~~~~~~~~
Tumblr media
Glee
Ryan Murphy’s musical dramedy Glee, which ran on Fox from 2009 to 2015, introduced numerous LGBTQ students and faculty members to the halls of William McKinley High School. The love stories of Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Blaine (Darren Criss), and Santana (Naya Rivera) and Brittany (Heather Morris), gave queer teens around the world romantic possibility models, while transgender characters like Coach Beiste (Dot-Marie Jones) and Unique Adams (Alex Newell) explored gender identity at different ages. The true delight of the show, however, was watching out actress Jane Lynch scheme to bring down the glee club as cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester as well as the various performances themselves, which recruited a new generation of viewers to the wonders of classic musicals and Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” alike.
