Hello Everyone! I've just finished reading it, so here's my review of "Darling in the Franxx" Manga!
I honestly never thought of actually buying all the volumes, but here we are XD
At first I expected it to be a basic plot based on main-stream points, considering the popularity of the Anime, but I was wrong! What a lovely and deep story!
I really liked how the events inside the chapters evolves but never escalates to the extreme, leaving a few pages for each character and each couple, to let them have their own development.
I was mostly interested in the 9's squad, they were all appealing, especially Alpha!
The only thing I disliked about this comic is the exagerated sexualization of the main squad, too often and too explicit for my taste, it ruins the serious atmosphere :/
Tumblr media
The covers are amazing! So colorful and detailed, this pic here shows some of them (you can use it without credits)
That's all for now! ByeBye!

I never watched Darling in the Franxx because it looked bad. I realized I shouldn't say a show is bad without watching it. I watched it. It's bad... Let me explain.
Episodes 1-19
It's not bad but it isn't good either. It just exists. Nothing terrible nothing remarkable. The only major flaw is the world building and characters knowledge of their world. For example, I find it incredibly strange they all know what would be appropriate or inappropriate around each other, what being at the beach means (in terms of boys getting a nicer view of the girls) and other sexual things but they don't know what kissing is or what sex is.
Other similar contradictions happen throughout that doesn't make the story very believable. Additionally, it suffers from the characters having to comment about aspects of their world in order to explain something away to the audience (the invisible caretakers not cleaning the baths but doing everything else etc). This usually happens as a joke in other shows or even Broadway musicals to let the audience know yeah we know this thing is weird, like it suddenly turning into the day time, but roll with it. In this medium t's just bad writing.
There's no plot driven reason for this story to happen at all. The sexual nature has no real purpose either. It also fails to make any meaningful comments on sexuality or puberty. The show tries to in episode 19 and after but it falls flat. So the only reason for it was just cause/creators were being perverted (it's studio Trigger so it isn't surprising but their other notable works do a better job of hiding it).
Darling DOES make some comment on what it is to be human, to be alive, to grow older and what role adults can play in children's lives. This take away message is the only good point about the anime. It's not enough to make up for all the other areas though.
If Darling in the Franxx is someone's favorite anime, I wouldn't be surprised. I think it's great to just watch and have fun (up to episode 20 after that it's downhill so badly that 20 should've been the last episode). It's something to enjoy despite the sadder parts the characters interacting and just being isn't boring at all.
Shockingly, I don't hate the MC. I also am glad the love triangle doesn't take away focus from the combat aspect. They gave Ichigo a brain and other motivations other than her love life.
Episodes 1-19 5/10
Episodes 20-24 3/10
Overall, 4/10
Not the worst thing I've seen nothing interesting happened though either.

preface, I'm not arguing about the current ongoing war situation. I only mentioned war so that people who filter out the word have their filters catch it. I'm also only commenting on XJZs behavior on the basis of using that kinda language. One bigger incident I've seen of XJZhao getting a massive wave of criticism was using "blood libel" against a Jewish follower, when they said they wouldn't buy their next book. XJZhao: "I don't want your blood money." Once again, think what you may of the current situation, or if you're on either the person's or XJZhaos side.
All that said, using a stereotype or a racist slur against someone because you feel they (as an individual) are an appropriate target is not ok. You don't get to replicate racist, discriminating, hateful and damaging words, phrases or stereotypes which attack an entire group, just because you're mad at one specific person, and then pretend it doesn't affect an entire group of people. No not even if you're POC, you don't need to be a armband wearing moron or a white hood cross burning swine to be sit at that particular kinda table.
If you're angry at a black person and use the N-word. If you're angry at a single queer person and use the F-word. You catch my drift, that's unacceptable, and would immediately get you labelled, and rightfully so, a racist, or queerphobe. Before anyone pulls that maybe they didn't know card, if someone unknowingly says something racist or queerphobic, do we just give them as pass, or do we call these people out? We still criticise people who use racist stereotypes, even if they didn't know, because this stuff should be called out regardless. Apparently that caused quite a stir, especially completely unrelated Jewish followers. Even those that are neutral/non-political or even on XJZhao's side. 👁👁
And obviously their ongoing beef with random people who criticize their online presence. XJZhao's main tool has been making tiktoks, and insta posts where they take screenshots and post the full online name and clearly invite their followers to harass them, or even tell them to blacklist and find people related to the target. Even sending their followers after someone who basically repeated exactly what XJZhao said themselves, that they missed deadlines and started fighting with their publisher. Just that they also pointed out how much leeway XJZhao was given compared to what's normal, and was still complaining. 🐧
Some of their tiktoks against the criticisms have also been just been very petulant. This one I relate to a bit lol 🤔 Such as the tiktok/yt short where they tell everyone who criticised or commented on the very blatant Darling in the Franxx story beats that "Akshually, the makers of DitF said I was all good." Yeah, that's fine, most people don't care about that though, they're commenting on how obvious the story elements were copied. It isn't always bad, many reviewers were neutral, some critical on how blatant it was. It doesn't matter if you got the green-light, it's still going to be something that might irk people because anyone who copies another story's story beats in such an identifiable way is gonna be called out at some point. That literally happened to every Hunger games, Twilight and HP clone. 🤷‍♀️
--
My dim memory is that XJZ literally said the initial plotbunny was a response to Darling in the Franxx in a youtube video long before the book came out. I think they should calm down and take some time away from toxic social media for their own good. (And yes, I do think they're acting antisemitic and getting a pass because online lefties often give people a pass for that when they wouldn't for other bigotry.) But I don't think it was any kind of secret that it's a blatant response to that series.
I haven't read the actual book. Does it come across as just a repeat? My impression was that it was supposed to be more of a critique/reaction.

Overly Formal Introduction
Welcome to the Tumblr page of Reading Too Much Into Things, a failed Youtube pop culture Archeologist, Archive, and Analysis channel with a primary focus on Japanese Tokusatsu (live action special effects) primary two branches, Kamen Rider and Super Sentai for recap and review purposes. It lasted for, I think, a year and a half. But enough about me, what do YOU think about me?
While I am not on the same side of any spectrum that will land me with an overriding Hyper Fixation, I do have a LOT of media I care deeply about, know an annoying amount about and will over share, or will get very defensive over criticisms over. I refuse to define myself or my personality off of being a fan of one of, or any, of these popular mass medias.
Fate franchise (stay/night, zero, grand order primarily)
Kobayashi's Maid Dragon
Re:Creators
Bleach
Kamen Rider franchise (Faiz, Gaim, Fourze, Anno's Shin Kamen Rider, favorites)
Super Sentai (Deka, Shinken, Kyouryu, Gokai, favorites)
Gundam franchise (G, G-witch, Wing, Build Fighters, IBO, favorites)
Darkwing Duck
Batman: The Animated Series
OK K.O. Let's Be Heroes
Steven Universe
Kingdom Hearts (Birth by Sleep favorite game)
Anime Studio Trigger (Darling in the Franxx is NOT a trigger anime)
Fromsoft video games (have finished Dark Souls 1 & 3, Bloodborne, and Sekiro)
Final Fantasy franchise
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Owl House (I will never forgive Disney)
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim
Ducktales Reboot
Space Dandy

Symphogear was fine I guess
Not much to say about this one, so I'm not going to do a full review. I watched the first season of Symphogear on recommendation from a random person on tumblr as a followup to g-witch. I can see why they made that recommendation, but this one just wasn't for me. It felt more like a magical girl anime than a mecha show, in the same way that Nanoha is more mecha than magical girl. The action was good but not amazing. For a series where they're powered by singing the music was pretty eh. Additionally, the plot was... ergh. I don't mind a wacky twist at the end of something, I like Darling in the FranXX mostly unironically. This one was just so arbitrary that it felt like they just needed a way to raise the stakes without building up to it. And the whole Superb Song where you can burn out your life force to win automatically was heavily undercut by multiple characters using their Superb Songs multiple times and being fine after. There were a bunch of other tiny issues that I won't bother to enumerate. Overall a generous 7/10. I won't be continuing with the series.

The Shambolic Anime Podcast [7/17/23] - "Liar, Liar"
Today, myself and Julian M. shoot the breeze about one of the few things from this anime season that is neither particularly good nor entirely awful, the game battle light novel adaptation Liar, Liar. You can listen below. ----

Tengoku Daimakyou (Heavenly Delusion)
A post-apocalyptic sci-fi full of action, mystery, and sexual themes. It follows a pair of protagonists on a quest through Japan after some event leaves society in ruins. They scavenge and take odd jobs while they travel around. And they strange fight monsters that have started appearing around. Why did society collapse? Where the monsters come from? Will they finish their quest?
Weak points: unappealing & peculiar art style/character design. Lackluster ending. Strong points: realistic action/fight scenes against real dangerous enemies that require wit and strategy. Varied characters, relationships and settings featuring people striving to have a life in the ruins. Content warning: several plot points are about sex (including rape, sex slavery, prostitution, pregnancy, masturbation, among others). Gruesome content (depictions of suicide, death, blood, human bodies cut in half, stitches, amputees, needles, monsters are unnerving lumps of flesh, among others).
Tumblr media
An interesting series because I started watching it for the amazing fight scenes, which remained high quality through most of the series, although the latter episodes looked a bit rougher than the first ones, however, looking back and reviewing the series as a whole, I see now it's a really solid sci-fi series that explores from multiple sides situations that emerge when you remove conventional knowledge. After society collapses, how do people live? If you don't know what "normal" is, how do you behave? If you don't know what a "normal" body or a "normal" social interaction is supposed to look like, you'll find no resistance to encountering all sorts of super-humans with special abilities because you'll have no frame of reference. As is typical of sci-fi series featuring trans-humanism, the series deals a lot with body-related topics, specially sex, but also gender, and by extension a sizable part of the series is also about romantic relationships.

Queer Angel’s Tea-sis on Darling in the Franxx
Tumblr media
Part 1: Introductions-We’re doing this in parts because tumblr says I typed way too much
Welcome guys, gals, and enpals to Queer Angel’s Tea-sis. A series where I discuss the good, the bad, and the questionable depictions of queer characters in anime and apply a queer lens of analysis. As any anime watcher will tell you, there are anime that start so-so but end well or turn out awful. However, few anime has the distinction of starting near-universally applauded (albeit I saw red flags a mile away) and then slowly take a downturn before nose-diving into a flaming hunk of garbage and exiting through the gift shop. Of course, some queer fans saw the death flags of this show’s narrative in the first three episodes of the show with its positing of a post-apocalyptic world where humans achieve immortality at the cost of reproduction and where they rely on quite literally the naïveté and uneducated horniness of teenagers to defend themselves from a subterranean existential threat. By discussing issues in production, story, and representation/messaging I hereby present the case for the designation of the title of “dumpster fire” to the show: Darling in the Franxx (DITF). (franks? Fran-X-X? who cares?)
Tumblr media
Production
Taking us back to July of 2017, Studio Trigger announced DITF at Anime Expo 2017 revealing that it would be a co-production with A-1 pictures. A-1 is most known for creating the Black Butler adaptation and Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day, but in recent years they’ve gained a reputation for making some … lackluster features like the Sword Art Online franchise and Eromanga Sensei (a production that is gross on many levels). However, during the show’s broadcast (January-July 2018), the team working on the project from A-1 changed labels to CloverWorks on April 1st of the same year. This change may or may not have led to issues toward the end of the series. Another issue with the production was a poor choice of director and head writer for the series. While Atsushi Nishigori has some serious animation chops such as being the Chief Animation Director for Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0 and key animation credits to multiple A-tier anime, he had almost no writing experience before DITF. Besides, his sole directing credit for a show was…an adaption of the Idolmaster franchise. Now while I will admit to enjoying some very cheap “cute people doing cute things” musical anime, they’re typically not the most intensive story-wise and Idolmaster is in my personal opinion, one of the most brainless and junk-foody of idol anime. This is coming from someone who watched an anime that was basically a recruitment tool made by the corporate monsters behind AKB48 and still enjoys it while trying to pretend it was made in a vacuum universe where creepy entitled male fans and producers don’t exist.
Tumblr media
While I don’t want to place blame solely on Nishigori for the faults of DITF, there were other issues that I will discuss in the later sections, his inexperience in writing and directing beyond single anime episodes certainly didn’t do the show any favors. This is especially considering this was a show heavily publicized by both major studios A-1 and Trigger, was heavily promoted in both Japanese and western anime news media, and was guaranteed to have a lot of eyes on it.
Footnote: Japanese idol culture has the expectation that female idols remain single. The penalty for being caught dating can be getting kicked out of their groups and ostracized by their fans for the crime of dating.
Tumblr media
Note: I’ll slowly start adding my sources to the review as I post the rest of this apparently too long for tumblr review.
Also, the rest of the review is added via reblogs~

[Anime Review] DARLING in the FRANXX
Tumblr media
DARLING in the FRANXX (2018)
Genre: Science Fiction, Romance Episodes: 24 Seasons: 1
Plot Summary: In the distant future the land is ruined and humanity establishes the mobile fort city Plantation. Pilots produced inside Plantation live in Mistilteinn, also know as the "birdcage." Children live there knowing nothing of the outside world or the freedom of the sky. Their lives consist of battling to carry out missions. Their enemies are mysterious giant lifeforms known as Kyōryū, and the children pilot robots called Franxx to face off against them. For the children, riding the Franxx proves their existence. A boy named Hiro is called Code:016, and he was once known as a prodigy. However, he has fallen behind, and his existence seems unnecessary. Not piloting a Franxx is the same as ceasing to exist. One day, a mysterious horned girl known as "Zero Two" appears before him. (from ANN)
When did I watch it? May 3-4, 2020
My Review:🌙🌙🌙🌙 3.75 Although it's really addicting, since I always wanted to know what's going to happen on the next episode, I can't give it a high rating. By the way, it's not really for kids to watch. There isn't any sensitive content, but only hints of it.
If you're familiar with an old school anime titled Vandread that aired way back 2000, it has the same style. "Robots", girls and *ahem*. The good news for me is, it doesn't really concentrate much on fight scenes, but more in the "slice of life" side. I love that about the anime and the complicated background story of the main characters. I wasn't expecting it, to be honest.
The reason why I have a hard time raising my rating is because of the near ending robot look. Yes, I know it isn't really a robot. You can find it out for yourself once you watch the anime but the explanation is near the last few episodes of the anime. It was just weird for me.
Seriously speaking though, the plot is much more complicated than it seems. It will be hard for watchers who aren't used to sci-fi themed animes. It was a stretch before the conclusion and I it felt rushed. I am also not a fan of the ending but I am still happy about it. I have mixed feelings about this anime.
How about you guys? Have you watched this yet? Did you also feel the same way?

So, 2018 is over and I´ve been wanting to do something like this for a while. Besides, my internet connection is dead and I don´t have anything else to kill time with. Anyway, here are my favorite things of 2018:
Warning: Giant wall of text incoming, proceed with caution
Part 3: Anime
This year was weird for seasonal anime as in: Winter Season had me watching a lot more shows than I usually keep up with and all of them were good while Spring Season didn´t peak my interest at all. Summer had one good new show and 3 sequels making it the best season in terms of the scores I gave but the worst when it came to finding new shows. And finally, Fall has me watching shows I´d usually never touch because it´s just this weird of a season.
Winter gave me not only another 12 episodes of Gintama (and an fantastic OP like always) but also a ton of enjoyable shows in Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens (feeling like a spiritual successor to Baccano and Durarara), Darling in the FRANXX, Violet Evergarden (the true unlimited budget works) and Kokkoku, which apart from having my favorite opening to come out this year also had a genuinely interesting concept and compelling characters, making it the first contender of Anime of the Year.
Spring had 5 big sequels coming up, none of which I had any interest in. In addition to that, none of the new shows kept my interest which led to the weird situation of me only finishing the winter leftover FRANXX even though it self-destructed halfway through its final core.
The only new show I picked up from Summer is Banana Fish which would leave me with a weird feeling of not knowing what to think of it. Especially in its first episodes there´re instances of brilliant visual story telling as well as rather clumsily handled scenes, luckily it got more consistent over time. Also at this point I need to give a shoutout to it´s 2nd ending for being the most effective insert song I´ve heard all year. The real winner of the season though were its sequels. Gintama returned with some of the strongest episodes the show has to offer and Spyair to deliver an emotionally charged OP (always a win). Attack on Titan finally came around to adapt my favorite arc of the manga and it´s just as gorgeous as I expected. I still wouldn´t recognize my favorite voice actor in this show if I didn´t know it was him. And Free!, well, Free! existed. There´s not much to say about Dive to the Future except that the characters are still likeable and water still looks better that it has any right to do and this is coming from a canoe slalom athlete. But in the end, this season doesn´t have much purpose other than hyping up the next installment which makes me wonder why KyoAni didn´t just make this a split core.
Fall finally came around and was being weird. It made me watch (and enjoy) an idol show, an isekai and a story about a bookseller. Zombieland Saga proves that I´m right about watching anything MAPPA puts out even if I don´t like the gernes it´s attached to, zombies trying to be idols while Mamoru Miyano delivers every single line as though his life depends on it creating some of my favorite anime moments period, what else do you need? Meanwhile That time I got reincarnated as a Slime (which does exactly what the title is saying) and Gaikotsu Shotenin Honda-san (a compilation of short stories about a skeleton who works as a bookseller) are equally strong contenders for the title of “show that definitely shouldn´t work but does”-of-the-year. Slime makes an almost by the number isekai more fun than it has any right to be and Honda-san not only gifted us with some of the funniest scenes this year and an amazing artstyle but also Saito Somas performance as the titular skeleton. I´ve been a fan of him ever since Zankyou no Terror and this is another performance I´ll never forget. Like I said, it´s a weird season, but also the strongest we´ve had in a long time.
