Happy World Frog Day! Here are the Bullrush Frogs and a bit of info dump about them <3
They were first released in 1991 for the UK and then re-released in 2001. So there are Tomy and Flair versions, as well as a release in the US, which has slightly different clothes and sitting/crawling twins. The Tomy clothes for them are similar to the Urban Life era, being a bit fancier. Official Bios (this one cracks me up):
FATHER WALTER BULLRUSH is known for being very, very lazy, but this is not really true. If Walter likes to do something, he will put all his limited energies into it. He will always be ready to drive the Country Bus for instance, he will even get up early in the morning if you need a driver. Fishing, of course, is his main love, that is, dangling a hook in the water. He does not like to catch anything because if he did, he would have to then find something else to do. Walter has found that by singing at the top of his croaky voice he can frighten all the fish away! His singing also frightens everyone else away, so he spends many a happy, uninterrupted afternoon on the riverbank singing and sunning himself.
MOTHER LYDIA BULLRUSH, unlike her darling husband, is always working and working very hard. She runs a beautifully spotless house and cares for her husband and four children, and that full time job is only a small part of her busy life. Lydia has a passion for wicker work, whether it is making baskets, hats or mats, her workmanship is imacculate and very artistic. Collecting bulrushes, dying them bright colours before leaving them to dry in the summer sun is the only job she gets any help with. Algy, her oldest son, enjoys the summer afternoons down by the river helping his mother whilst she enjoys teaching him to weave.
BROTHER ALGERNON BULLRUSH hates his full name, so everyone calls him Algy, even his mother who does not like nicknames and only does so, because it pleases her wonderful son. Algy, like his mother, has a passion for weaving, but unlike his mother he prefers to create impractical items like wall hangings. He claims these items he creates are art, not picture art like in art class at school, but abstract art where the shapes and colours portray the meaning and message. Lily his sister says he gets these strange ideas from reading too many stuffy books.
SISTER LILY BULLRUSH loves to sing and unlike her father has a beautiful voice. Because she is a little shy she does most of her practising down by the river where everyone avoids going because of her fathers singing. She originally wanted to be a pop star but now wants to be an opera singer because people go to see the opera all the time. Pop singers only have concerts when they have a record in the charts. Ottilee Marmalade is also giving Lily tips on how to be more confident, hoping she will overcome her shyness.
BABY BROTHER MOSES BULLRUSH must be about the only little boy in Sylvania who loves having baths. He spends hours and hours in the bath playing with his rubber duck and other bath-time toys. If only Lydia or Walter had more time, he would spend all day playing and splashing around in the tub.
BABY SISTER IRIS BULLRUSH must be one of the cleanest little children in Sylvania, because she just hates having baths, so therefore never gets dirty. When ever it is her turn to have a bath, she just cries and cries, then bawls her eyes out and splashes about until her parents get her out of the bath. Bath-time in the Bullrush household is always rather nerve racking!
*having trouble finding official photos so here is one from Sylvanian Store Keepers and the rest are my family who dont have the right clothes lol
<3 In my town Mr. and Mrs Bullrush are renamed Sunnypatch and they are co-mayors of Sunnypatch Gardens.

MOVIES WITH MEN IN UNDERWEAR (This is outdated- website shutdown early 2000’s)
“D”
D3: The Mighty Ducks (1996) Disney romp sequel. In a revenge prank, the Ducks introduce fire ants into the seniors' dorm. About a dozen guys rush out into the corridor, most in their T-shirts and boxers.
Dam Busters, The (1954) Wartime dramatisation. In a spot of RAF roughhousing, one man can be glimpsed in the corridor in his shirt and white boxer shorts. Midway through the movie.
Damn Yankees (1958) Tab Hunter changes his pants in the baseball locker room, showing off his white full cut boxer shorts, just before he meets the sultry Gwen Verdon.
Dance, Fools, Dance (1931) Aboard a rich high society yacht, Joan Crawford throws an underwear party for all her male and female friends. Since everyone is in tuxedos, and people want to swim, they strip down to boxers of various 30’s type, including some printed full-cuts, and jump into the ocean.
Dangerous Ground (1997) Crime drama. Ice Cube tries to sober up his junkie brother Stephen (Eric Miyeni), who's wearing an orange satin shirt and black briefs. In a later scene, he and friends go to a guy's apartment, tie him up in his in his bathroom in his T-shirt, socks and boxers, and give him electric shocks.
Dark Side of Genius (1994) Patrick Richwood. Towards the end of the movie, he wears an open robe and very tight black jockey shorts (the kind with the fly-front) and you can see every bit of his big dick! ENORMOUS BASKET!!! I saw that actor at the Beverly Hot Springs, here in Los Angeles and he is, in fact, hung like a horse!
Darling Lili (1970) Rock Hudson wearing white World War I ‘drawers’ as he has a comic bedroom scene with Darling Lili, played by Julie Andrews - a comedy indeed.
Day the Earth Caught Fire, The (1961) Sci-fi disaster movie. Edward Judd in white boxer shorts for a moment.
Day the Fish Came Out, The (1967) A young Tom Courteney spends most of the movie in his Jockeys.

Dead Ringers (1988) Jeremy Irons and his ‘twin brother’ walk through several scenes in their printed boxer shorts.
Deadly Outbreak (1995) Action. Early in the film, one of the bad guys tries to rape the heroine, but is interrupted by Jeff Speakman. His pants drop, revealing printed boxers, and Speakman grabs his pants and flips him over, before kicking him in the crotch.
Death of a Soldier (1987) Couple of cadet boxer scenes ... a guy on the john too.
Death Race 2000 (1975) Action. Don't miss David Carradine, wearing only his black face mask and underwear, slow-dancing with his gorgeous female navigator. Hilarious.
Death Warrant (1990) Action. Jean-Claude Van Damme and several other men in boxers and T-shirts, as they are processed into jail.
Delicatessen (1991) Surreal black comedy. The hero strips down to his large boxers in a flooded room.
Deliverance (1972) Infamous rape scene with Ned Beatty in his "panties."
Design for Living (1933) Fredric March waits for his pants to be pressed in a momentary full-cut boxer short scene, while he paces.
Detention (1998) Rick Schroder as a crazed gunman who goes out and shoots up his old high school. Early in the film, before the shootout, Schroder is shown in his bathroom, wearing only his boxers and white socks.
Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo (1999) Comedy. "Deuce does an exotic dance routine for a woman in his tightfitting briefs. She grabs his underwear and stretches it down before letting it go, causing it to snap him in the groin. Later, we see Deuce and this woman's husband doing a dance for her in their tightfitting briefs.
Devil in a Blue Dress (1995) Tense film noir. Fabulous 1940s cars, and, for a moment, Denzel Washington getting out of bed in his underwear. Much of the rest of the time, he's wearing a ribbed, white undershirt, as here:
Devils Don't Dream! (1995) (Investigating the Story of Jacobo Arbenz Guzman (1995)) Movie about the former president of Guatemala. September 1954: overthrown in a CIA-sponsored coup, Jacobo Arbenz is stripped down to his underwear and presented to the photographers, before his journey into exile.
Devlin (1992) (TV) Bryan Brown is in laundromat doing laundry. He took his pants off to wash them and he wears a jacket and blue jockeys.
Diaboliques, Les (1955) When Simone Signoret loses her keys in the pool, one of the school boys, about 14-16, strips to his classic white jockeys to dive in the pool. Really hot scene as he emerges with totally wet undies and his bulge is clearly seen. Really hot for a ‘50s film.
Dick (1999) Comedy. "briefly see the top of the backside of guy's underwear as he pulls down his pants after being accidentally stabbed by a pin."
Die Hard: With a Vengeance (1995) Action. Bruce Willis is instructed to show up in Harlem in just his white full-cut boxers and a sign containing the ‘n’ word.
Diggstown (1992) I think it’s this one James Woods in white boxers and sweatshirt.
Dil To Pagal Hai (1997) Rahul (Shahrukh Khan, aged about 32), out shopping, goes into a dressing room to try on a shirt. Sounds simple enough, but he forgets to put his pants on and walks out in his underwear. Pooja sees him but tries to avoid him, so as not to embarrass him.
Diner (1982) Kevin Bacon in boxers in an outdoor scene.
Disco Years, The (1991) Short coming-out drama. The young lead jumps into a swimming pool in his underwear (which his friend then pulls off).
Disorganized Crime (1989) After accidentally falling on an anthill, Corbin Bernsen strips off all his clothes, except for a pair of black bikini briefs, and goes running off into the woods in only his underwear. Ed O'Neill plays George Denver, a detective who goes to a small Montana town. At one point, he needs to cross a river, to join his partner who is waiting for him on the other bank. Since he doesn't want to wet his suit, he removes it and his shoes before stepping in the river. But the water is icy cold and some of the pebbles are quite sharp, making the crossing a bit painful and difficult for the cop carrying his clothes in his hands. When his partner shouts at him not to drop their precious flashlight, George trips over and drops both the flashlight AND his clothes, which are swiftly carried downstream by the strong current. Poor George! After that, he gets to spend the rest of the day - and the whole of the following night - running around the countryside in his shirt and tie, and full-cut white boxer shorts!
Diving In (1991) High school boys in Speedos.
Divorce American Style (1967) Dick Van Dyke, angry at wife Debbie Reynolds, refuses to speak to her as he dresses, wearing his full-cut white boxer shorts.
Divota prasine (1975) One of the two partisans in this Yugoslavian tale has lost his pants and must lug around a huge machine gun, the other is a young boy who hero-worships him. They are caught behind German lines and are in as much danger from their cowardly countrymen as they are from the Germans.
Doctor at Sea (1955) [Not sure if this is the right title. Can anyone confirm?] Comedy. Chubby, mustachioed police chief ends up stripped to his outsize, spectacularly colorful boxers in a jailbreak.
Doctor Detroit (1983) Dan Akroyd makes a running change, exposing his bare legs and printed full-cut boxers to all who’ll see. The print is a polka-dot pattern.
Doctor Takes a Wife, The (1940) Ray Milland wakes up one morning in his full-cut white boxers and garters, only to find out that he’s married to Loretta Young, and that she and another man have hidden his pants. The comedy intensifies as Ray Milland paces about, loudly screaming "Where are my pants?!!!"
Dogboys (1998) (TV) Thriller. Many scenes with prisoners in their prison-issue olive-green boxers and undershirts.
Dollars (1972) ($) Crime caper starring Warren Beatty and Goldie Hawn. Hawn plays a prostitute, and during one scene a client is running all over her apartment in his underwear and black socks.
Dolores Claiborne (1995) Drama. Kathy Bates laughs at her husband when his pants split. At first, he laughs along and pulls the split wide open to show off his white briefs; but then the mood turns ugly.
Dominick and Eugene (1988) Bed scene with Ray Liotta in white jockeys and Tom Hulce in blue jockeys and white A-shirt.
Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood (1996) Spoof comedy. Sight gag sends up the saggy-pants fashion, as the camera pans across three young black guys standing with their pants hanging low, lower and lowest (hips, knees and ankles), showing off their white undershorts. Another shot shows some fancy boxers.
Don't Just Lie There, Say Something (1973) Abysmal British trouser-dropping farce.
Don't Just Stand There! (1968) Comedy. The plot involves some clothes-swapping and affords the chance to see Robert Wagner's white boxers.
Don't Look Down (1998) (TV) Chiller. Billy Burke in gray boxer shorts.
Double McGuffin, The (1979) A group of boys goes swimming in their underwear. The youngest looks about 13 and flashes his bare butt.
Downhill Racer (1969) Robert Redford momentarily, in his longjohns.
Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde (1995) Tim Daly (Wings) handcuffs himself in bed wearing white Jockeys. HOT HOT HOT scene. Very big bulge. Also, takes his white boxers off and shreds them in the paper shredder at work. Nice ass!
Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (1993) Jason Scott Lee as Bruce Lee is only wearing white Fruit of the Loom briefs as he gets up from bed to answer the door.
Dream a Little Evil (1992) Has scenes of the very hot older brother in his underwear at the beginning of the movie and about 30 minutes into it. White briefs for a couple of minutes.
Dream Team, The (1989) Comedy. Middle-aged mental patient is stopped just before stripping naked in a revival meeting, and is thrown out in his underwear.
Dreamscape (1984) Dennis Quaid is a clairvoyant who is being tested at a sleep clinic. One of the doctors enters his room while he is sleeping. Dennis Quaid wakes up and gets out of bed in just a pair of skimpy black bikini briefs while in discussion with the doctor. Sexy scene.
Dress Gray (1986) (TV) Alec Baldwin in Speedos in a swimming pool. Lots of shots of his chest in the whole movie.
Drive, He Said (1971) A seldom seen movie of the early 70s, directed by Jack Nicholson, and (to my knowledge) not available on video. Sexy, fairly long scene of male leads in a college basketball locker room scene, stripped to their white briefs. At least one other white-briefs scene involving one of the leads. A real underwear movie, worth getting hold of if you can.
Drop Squad (1994) Abrasive satire. Vigilante squad abducts blacks they consider sellouts. One man is kept chained up in a cage in his boxer shorts.
Drugstore Cowboy (1989) Matt Dillon in boxer shorts.
Dumb & Dumber (1994) Comedy. Jeff Daniels sitting on the john taking a heavy-duty dump with his pants down, CK briefs clearly visible, after being tricked into taking a laxative.
Dying to Love You (1993) (TV) Tim Matheson in his T-shirt and striped boxer shorts a couple of times.

You wipe your hands on a tea towel when you hear the front door open, signalling Violet and Sean’s return. You then hear Violet’s footsteps pitter-patter down the hallway, immediately followed by Sean telling her to come back and take her shoes off first. Smiling to yourself, you leave the kitchen and head over to greet them, finding Sean knelt down and helping your daughter out of the aforementioned shoes.
“We’re back mum!” Violet says happily when she sees you.
“Yes, I can see that, love,” You smile before giving her a look. “Vi, you know how to take off your own shoes.”
“It’s fine,” Sean assures you, leaning over to place them neatly off to the side.
He had been visiting frequently ever since you and Vi moved into your new place - an arrangement you both had agreed on not long after everything had been dealt with. He wanted to be an active part of Violet’s life and you were more than willing to let that happen, knowing how much it would mean not only to him but to Violet, too. She still didn’t know the truth about Sean but it was clear she’d grown attached nonetheless, her eyes never failing to light up every time you told her Sean was coming over. Today, she had been particularly excited because he promised he would take her to a park.
“There was a pond at the park, mum!” Violet exclaims excitedly, practically bouncing where she stood. “And we saw so many ducks! And swans. And gooses! One got angry at Sean.”
She’s giggling as she tells you the latter and you look at Sean with an amused expression on your face. Still crouched before your daughter, he glances up to give you a deadpan look as if to say don’t even ask, which makes you snort.
You both miss the way Violet’s gaze flits between the both of you curiously, a happy smile forming on her face. She then throws her arms around Sean, hugging him farewell.
“Bye Sean.”
He sways a little at the force with which she throws herself at him but manages to steady himself, chuckling as he hugs her back.
“So eager to be rid of me, hm?”
Violet pulls away with a sheepish look on her face, “I’m going to watch TV now.”
“Go on then,” He taps her nose. “I’ll see you later.”
She grins at him and then she’s gone, energetically sprinting past you and down the hallway, making a quick beeline for the living room.
“You don’t need to run!” You call out to her but it’s futile, she’d already disappeared into the other room. Behind you, you hear Sean chuckle.
“You’re such a mum,” He teases, getting up onto his feet.
You let out an amused scoff in response, folding your arms across your chest. “Don’t even start, she'll be a little terror if I don’t give her some rules to adhere to.”
Sean smiles fondly, thinking about his little terror of a daughter. While you were mostly joking, Sean knew there was a bit of truth to your statement. It was a task and a half to wrangle Violet sometimes, the headstrong little thing that she was. Unsurprising, Sean thinks amusedly, considering who her parents were.
But as difficult as she could be sometimes, Sean had seen first-hand all the good values you’d managed to instill in her. You’d definitely raised a sweet kid, one who was wonderfully earnest and full of kindness, and he tells you just as much, with a genuine sincerity in his tone that catches you off guard.
“You’ve raised her well, y/n,” He says sincerely, leaving you speechless for a moment. You didn’t expect to hear that from him at all.
“Thanks, Sean. I feel like I’m a terrible mum sometimes,” You confess quietly. “So that’s… that means a lot.”
He smiles and you’re sure your heart skips a beat.
You didn’t want to admit it but you enjoyed Sean's visits just as much as Violet did. The more time you spent around him, the more you found yourself falling for him all over again. You’d forgotten how well the two of you could get along and on top of that, watching him and Violet spend time together made you melt. You had no real inkling as to how he felt about you but moments like these definitely didn’t help your growing feelings.
“Do you want to stay for dinner?”
It comes out of your mouth before you could even think to stop yourself and when you see the surprise and hesitation on his face, you immediately regret asking.
“You don’t have to, obviously,” You assure him, trying to backtrack. “You probably have things to do.”
He winces apologetically, “Yeah, I’m sorry. I’ve got to go back to the office tonight, unfortunately. Take care of some things.”
“That’s fine!” You reply almost too quickly, embarrassed at the fact that you might’ve been too forward by asking him in the first place. “No worries.”
There’s an awkward pause where neither you nor Sean know what to say next and you sigh, feeling like you’d just ruined a perfectly good moment between you two.
“Well I won’t keep you then,” You continue as nonchalantly as you could, hoping he didn’t notice how mortified you were. “I hope you have a good night.”
“Yeah, you too.”
He gives you one last parting smile and you watch as he heads out the door, hating how disappointed and embarrassed you feel after it clicks shut behind him.
You stand there for a moment before letting out an agonised groan and heading back to the kitchen, trying to forget that conversation ever happened.
The rest of your night is filled with your usual routine - dinner, dishes and then giving Violet a bath before bed - but no matter how hard you try, you can't help but keep dwelling on the exchange, ruminating on what it might have meant.
You were starting to feel foolish for thinking that maybe things were changing between you and Sean. That’s what led you to ask him to stay for dinner to begin with, thinking you were both at a place where that could happen without any tension or awkwardness. Maybe you were wrong. Maybe he wouldn’t have stayed even if he didn’t have business to attend to.
You shake your head, trying to stop yourself from going further down that rabbit hole. You were going to drive yourself crazy if you kept thinking about it. The fact of the matter was that you had no idea how Sean felt about you but he was here nonetheless because he cared about Violet. You just had to live with that and forget your feelings.
Easier said than done, you think sourly. When the mere sight of him makes my goddamn heart race.
"Mummy?" Violet asks while you shampoo her hair, bringing you out of your spiral of thoughts.
"Hm?"
"You and Sean should get married."
You nearly choke on the air you breathe. Pausing your actions, you look at her in bewilderment but her eyes are on her hands as she glides them through the soapy water.
“Why do you say that, Vi?” You pry gently.
You wonder if you’d been that obvious with your feelings or if maybe Sean had said something, but she just shrugs like it was simply a passing thought she decided to say out loud.
“Sean and I are friends, darling,” You say to her, though you were starting to wonder if maybe that label was a stretch. “Usually people who get married are dating each other."
Violet makes a contemplative face, “Will you and Sean do that?”
“What, date?”
She nods, leaving you more confused than ever.
“I doubt it, Vi,” You sigh.
I burned that bridge a long time ago.
You massage her scalp gently, lathering up the shampoo as you watch her continue to play with the water, your own mind racing.
“Did you want us to date?” You ask her, still trying to figure out where this was coming from.
She nods again.
“Why?”
Violet looks sheepish now, patting away at the bubbles that surrounded her, and she says shyly, “So then I can have a dad.”
~
You sit against your headboard with your head in your hands, thinking about everything that had transpired since the late afternoon. Not only were you dealing with your reemerging feelings for Sean - who most likely did not reciprocate them - you were also dealing with a daughter who suggested you marry the man because that was the only way she thought she could get a dad.
Letting out a frustrated groan, you press your head against your forearms. You were acutely aware that you would not be dealing with any of this if you’d never left Sean in the first place. You sit there despairingly for a long while before a persistent buzz from your phone starts to fill the air. Lifting your head, you blink in surprise at the caller ID before answering it.
“Sean?”
“Hi,” His voice comes through the speaker, making your heart involuntarily skip a beat. “Sorry, I know it’s late.”
“It’s fine,” You assure him, shifting the phone to a more comfortable position. “Is everything okay?”
“Everything’s fine, I just… I wanted to apologise again for not being able to stay for dinner. I should have taken you up on it, the meeting I went to instead was the dullest shit imaginable.”
You can’t help the small laugh that bubbles out of your throat at the grouchy tone his voice takes on as he tells you about how dull it was, “Sorry to hear that.”
He hums in response and you could just imagine the amused smirk on his face. “You don’t sound very sorry.”
“Well, I don’t know,” You reply. “Violet spent all of dinner telling me about every animal you saw at the pond today. Not sure if you would prefer a play-by-play of your own day over the meeting.”
“You underestimate how boring the meeting was.”
“No,” You laugh. “I’ll take your word for it.”
There’s a natural lull in the conversation and you know you have to take the opportunity to clear the air, for the sake of your own sanity.
“Sean,” You start, steeling yourself with an inhale. “I hope I didn’t overstep earlier, asking you to stay for dinner.”
“Overstep?”
“I… I worried you might’ve thought it was a bit much. The three of us have never properly spent time all together so I realise that it might have been a big ask and-”
“It was fine, y/n,” He says softly, quelling your worries. “I was surprised you asked but it wasn’t a problem. I would’ve liked it, the three of us together.”
After all that time you’d spent ruminating earlier, the statement is more than you ever expected from him. So much so that you’re rendered speechless, your heart in your throat.
“That’s why I called, actually,” He continues. “I wanted to ask if you and Vi wanted to come over for dinner next weekend. To make up for the fact that I couldn’t tonight.”
You don’t even have to think twice about your answer.
“Yes, of course. We’d love to.”
“Great,” He says and you can hear the smile in his voice. “I’ll see you both then.”
You can’t help but smile in return, “Looking forward to it.”
“Me too. Goodnight y/n.”
“Night, Sean.”
You’re giddy as you place your phone on your bedside table and settle into bed for the night, Sean’s call single-handedly flipping your entire mood. Maybe it was silly to feel that way after just one phone call but you couldn’t help it, not when it came to Sean. Against all your better judgement, you feel a little spark of hope in your chest as you drift off to sleep.
Maybe there was something there after all.

i saw your interaction with tinkiisms and I was just wondering if you could talk about the similarities between mr Darling and Hook?
@tinkiisms. Under a cut because this is really long.
I most certainly can!
Tumblr media
So, I can’t answer this question without first talking about how George and Jim are often portrayed by the same actor - now, in the original performances of the play, I imagine it was just to keep the roles simple: as George and Hook are never on stage at the same time, there’s no reason they oughtn’t be played by the same actor, and this is a theatre tradition you see in all kinds of performances - most notably, for example, in Hamilton, where Peggy Schuyler becomes Maria Reynolds, Lafayette becomes Philip, et cetera.
In newer performances, however, particularly in television, film - even in animation - where you truly need to have one actor playing the two characters. So there’s a few reasons we see it - part of it is that a lot of the time directors and writers want to create a very visual manifestation of the grown-up in the eyes of the children.
George, as a father, is focused on being respected by his children: he’s stern, he makes them take baths, he says they have to grow up and be mature and open checking accounts! He is the villain of the every day world - he is the children’s nemesis. He is also a terribly shy bank cashier who can’t make small talk, would go to the ends of the earth for his wife (in a taxi cab), and he worries constantly about whether his dog respects him or not (she admires you tremendously, George).
In the world of Neverland, however, baths, maturity and checking accounts are little but distant dreams - in the fantasy lands and islands, they fight their nemesis in a more hands-on fashion: with swords and witty repartée! Hook isn’t shy in the fucking least, but we see the elements of his three-dimensional character just as we do with George - we see the lingering ghosts of his time at Eton and his crippling insecurity as to whether he has good form or not, for example.
George and Hook are presented to their audience as having their own anxieties, and as the audience we’re entertained by them as they add a lot to their characters, but we simultaneously know that the children, young as they are, are blissfully unaware of any worries or insecurities they might have - whether the weapon used is a bed time or a hook, the adults are their enemies.
Then is the element of respect. George and Hook are adults, and although they’re enemies, they’re also… Cool! … Okay, cool is the wrong word.
But nonetheless, there’s an element of mystique to each of them - George is very impressive, does some vague job with numbers at the bank, and is the head of the household. He loves his children desperately. There’s a quote from the book, from the first page, actually, that is as follows:
Mr Darling used to boast to Wendy that her mother not only loved him but admired him. (Barrie, 1911, p.5)
So, for a reader this is just amusing, because it’s such a ridiculous thing to boast about, but it’s actually a concern we see manifest in the children in a lot of adaptations - yes, Mr and Mrs Darling love them… But do they admire them? Do they respect them? A big part of growing up is that you get to be respected, but why can’t they be respected without growing up?
Just as George constantly worries about whether people (his wife, his children, his boss, his dog) respect him, the children want to be respected too, and the idea of respect in the original novel and in a lot of the adaptations is constantly present.
We see it in Hook, as well - Hook’s hyperfocusing on the concept of good form, as instilled in him during his time at Eton college, is all about the politics of respect: respecting rules of engagement, respecting your partner in a melée, respecting the world around you. So George and Hook are on a level with this - both of them sort of demand respect, but because the children are fascinated by the mystery of this strange adulthood, they also want to be respected by George and Hook respectively - either by being a Proper English Gentleman ™ as is the John Darling way, or thinking about how one might be as a pirate oneself.
And the final parallel is probably played up most in Peter Pan (Hogan, 2003), which is probably in Wendy’s Electra Complex. We see it in a few different adaptations, and it’s pretty much always very subtle, but it has that line of respect and admiration where the fascination with Hook is on the cusp of sexual when they’re portrayed by the same actor. Now, I won’t really talk about this, because I think that Hogan’s adaptation, while one of my favourites, draws a lot of its weight from Wendy and Peter being on the doorstep of puberty, and so it poises a lot of concerns and thoughts that just aren’t present in the book.
So, yeah, basically, George and Hook are often portrayed by the same actor, but that’s more to do with the way the children perceive them to be rather than in actual similarities between their characters - other than their both being blokes in their 40s with numerous insecurities and loving spouses (my next essay will be about Mrs Darling and Smee ;) ). Onto the ACTUAL similarities between the two of them!
Tumblr media
First and foremost is the similarity in them of education. Hook attended “a famous public school”: Eton. In regards to his walk, his attitude and his knowledge, “its traditions clung to him like garments”, and although Hook is now quite aged up, the focus of his school days still sticks with him. George might not have attended so prestigious an institution, but when the Darling children go away with Peter, he cries out, “Mea culpa, mea culpa!” The quote that follows is “he had had a classical education”. (Barrie, 1991, p. 15)
So, with George and Hook, the both of them are very intelligent, quite cunning men, but both are minded as to the literary and the like - no man who’s recovered from his school days cries out in Latin, and it’s infinitely more obvious that Hook hasn’t recovered from his own. Their education is very important with both of them, particularly as it adds to their insecurity.
Tumblr media
In Hook (Spielberg, 1991), Hook’s catchphrase is “GOOD FORM!” Now, Hook is a pretty ridiculous movie, and although it’s a very detailed, passionate adaptation of the original text, it’s intentionally cartoonish in its characterisation of Hook and Smee, who are extra gay - but this is actually quite accurate in that it probably shows Hook’s inner thinking very well.
As Hook thinks on whether he’s good form or not, “from far within him he heard a creaking… “Have you been good form to-day?” (Barrie, 1911, p.117) was [the creaking’s] eternal question.” in reference to the ghosts of his time at Eton. He doesn’t feel like he’s good enough in terms of real-life respectability, and then he gets insecure about being insecure - “Was it not bad form to think about good form?” (Barrie, 1911, p.117).
Now, let me compare these side-by-side: “his proud spirit broke” (Barrie, 1911, p.49) and “his proud heart was nearly bursting” (Barrie, 1911, p.19) - Hook and George are both so proud and in times of stress (Pan calling Hook a codfish and George being made to take his medicine respectively) they just buckle.
Tumblr media
George is so insecure, like, “He had sometimes a feeling that [the dog] didn’t respect him,” (Barrie, 1911, p.8), can you imagine being a grown man and worrying that your dog doesn’t admire you? Genuinely, though, George’s insecurities are often gently patted by Mrs Darling (just as Smee pats Hook’s), and they’re constant in his every interaction. It says “he craved for admiration”, and that’s something similar to Hook, who commands a distinct respect from his crew.
These insecurities aside, though, George and Hook are both described constantly as being brave and honourable. George is “very honourable” (Barrie, 1911, p.6), and Hook is described as “a man of indomitable courage” (Barrie, 1911, p. 50); these aren’t just words, though, it is shown. Hook constantly dives into battle with pretty much everyone, and even when he feels fear, he doesn’t usually let it linger with him except for fears of his own blood and of the crocodile out for his blood; George, too, shows how brave he is, though in a different fashion. Despite his apparent fears over money in the Darling household, he takes the plunge with having Wendy, and then John and Michael; equally, he braves parties despite a ridiculous fear of small talk. George’s fears might be far more pedestrian, but he does his best to conquer them nonetheless.
Tumblr media
With this distinct focus upon courage and their stiff upper lips, they take this onto command as well - Hook “stands aloof” from his “followers” (Barrie, 1911, p.105), and George says to Michael, “Be a man,” (Barrie, 1911, p.18) when he’s like… 4. Hook is a ship’s captain, and he takes to command very well, but George would actually be very good at command himself were he not so short-tempered and nervous all the time.
There are a few other similarities, too - the two of them are ridiculously over dramatic, and in their focus upon good form, they actually use use politeness as an insult. When Wendy brings George his medicine, he thanks her “with a vindictive politeness that was quite thrown away upon her” (Barrie, 1911, p.19), and there’s a direct parallel with Hook later in the book, where Hook treats Wendy with “ironical politeness” (Barrie, 1911, p.108), where he takes off his hat and gives her his arm, et cetera. The both of them know, on one level, that such things are pointless to do with children, but this ridiculous, emotionally constipated passive aggression is just ingrained in them.
And my last and favourite similarity is this: they both think creatively under pressure. They have a hyperfocus on the rules, but they constantly think of ways to skirt the rules, duck under them, play fucking limbo. In the start of the book, the text is about how all the men realized they were in love with Mrs Darling and they ran along to her at once - all except George, “who took a cab and nipped in first” (Barrie, 1911, p. 5). That is quick thinking in a crisis, like- George isn’t as plainly piratical because he isn’t a pirate, but he will think creatively and outside of the box, because he’s so quick-witted himself.
There are a few other things - they both have really sharp, sarcastic senses of humour, they’re both constantly being fussed over by their respective spouses, they’re both assholes with egos the size of Memphis, but those are the main similarities between them.
There are differences, of course.
George feels a lot more guilt than Hook, he’s of lesser means, he’s less violent and he has more fear when it comes to other people… But the main difference between them is probably the lack of confidence. Hook might be focused on good form, but he believes in his skill for everything else - Darling is a lot more uncertain of himself.
But were he more confident? God, he would be a MARVEL.
