Sometimes, I Write Beginnings I Never Use (Dark Story Prompts)
Now and then, I write things that could serve as the start of a story, though I never actually use them. Here, I’m sharing a few that lean toward the darker side. Feel free to use them as prompts, and have fun with them.

The house had been empty for decades, or so they said. But when I stepped inside, the floor creaked underfoot as if it remembered every step ever taken, every secret ever buried.
There was a strange comfort in the darkness, a place where shadows whispered the truths the daylight refused to see.
The wind outside howled, but the sound inside was worse—soft footsteps echoing through the empty halls.
I thought it was just a nightmare, until I woke up with the dirt still under my fingernails.
They said I wouldn’t feel a thing, that I’d be free once it was over. But as the needle slid in, I realized I was still very much alive—and trapped.
(Do you want a part two?)

It is just befitting to pay for the plethora of pleasant dreams by a myriad of nightmares, is it not? #dreams #nightmares #writingprompts #darktheme #darkprompt #dreamcatcher #blackandwhitephotography #darkaesthetic https://www.instagram.com/p/Bqj7Brrn2L2/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=a8pascvvr8pl

Request: Chase saying 8 to his kids? Thanks!
Monsters in the Dark
Prompt 8: “I’m never letting you go.” (part of my 100 prompt challenge)  (10th prompt done, yeah!!!)

“Daddy?” Chase heard the distant call. Vague and blurry, but there. He looked around for someone. And there was no one. Just him and an open.. area with no clear landmarks or anything. Was he dreaming? “Daddy?” More clearly this time.
“Ariana?” Chase called out in his dream. Though, did he actually say that, or did his mind say that? He felt something shake his shoulder. But the area around him remained still. He needed to wake up.
His eyes opened. His real eyes. It was bright out here, well some parts were bright. The TV was still playing because Chase forgot to turn it off before going to sleep. Ariana’s face was blocking part of the screen. Her face was starting to come into view as his eyes adjusted to the light.
Chase pushed himself up so that he was now sitting up straight (well, straight enough) on the couch. “What is it sweetie?” Pins and needles started crawling up the arm he had been sleeping on.
“I had a nightmare.” She brought her plush seal to her face, snuggling it tightly. “You and mommy were fighting. And you were getting louder and louder. And then something started crawling up behind you daddy.” Ariana started swaying back and forth, squeezing her animal tighter. “I ran to warn you, and then you were snatched away by the monster in the dark. And mommy seemed happy. And then I saw that mommy wasn’t mommy, but she was actually a monster too. I turned around and there were monsters all around me.” She brought her hands up to her face and covered her eyes. Rocking herself even harder now.
“Oh, sweetie.” Chase picked up his daughter and placed her on his lap. He wrapped her in a hug and squeezed tight. Nightmares weren’t something he was used to dealing with. Rather, he wasn’t used to dealing with his kids’ nightmares. “I’m here.”
“Can I stay up tonight daddy? I’m afraid to go to sleep.” The words were soft, much like Ariana. In Chase’s eyes, she was too sweet and innocent to be having nightmares.
“It’s a school night, you need to go to school tomorrow.” He felt her shoulders start to tense up. Chase pulled back a bit so he could look into little Ariana’s eyes, keeping his grip on her. She still needed comfort. “What if I stayed with you the night, would that be okay? Could you go to sleep then?”
Snowy the seal was still smushed into the side of her face. Her lips were turned down, the way she always did when she didn’t get what she wanted. He didn’t blame her for being disappointed. Sometimes he would stay up to avoid his own nightmares. Not that that actually helped him. And sleeping on the couch indefinitely wasn’t helping them either.
After a few seconds, Ariana did a small nod. “Please Daddy.”
“Of course, baby.” Chase moved his arms again so he could support her weight. Ariana wrapped her arms around her father’s neck and legs around his chest, clinging to him like sticky tape. With some effort, Chase managed to stand up with both of them. His legs had feeling in them, so at least he could walk without hassle. He left the TV on as a light source while he walked upstairs. Stacy would give him hell about leaving it on (another thing for her to hate him for), but it was the best soft light he had.
After getting upstairs, the light was lost and his eyes had to adjust to the dark. At least he knew how far down the hall Ariana’s room was. Once he reached it, he bent slightly to open the door without removing an arm from his little princess. Her night light was still on, streaming a red-green-blue cycle of light. Chase laid her down on her bed and started to back away to grab a chair. Chairs weren’t the worst thing to fall asleep on.
“No!” His hands had just left her and were now hovering a few inches above her. Ariana lifted her head up. “Don’t leave me.”
“I’m not sweetie. I’m just getting a chair.”
“Nooo.” What was he supposed to do?
“Alright.” Chase placed a hand on her side and knelt down beside her bed. This was… probably not right. So, not a chair, and not on the floor… Chase spoke carefully, “Do you want me to sleep beside you?”
“MmHm.” Ariana nodded her head quickly.
“Okay. Scooch.” Ariana wiggled over to the edge of her bed while Chase climbed to the area behind her. He pressed his back against the wall and bent his knees so that he was just barely contained on the bed. It didn’t feel right just having his hand on her side, so Chase reached around until his arm covered her tiny torso. She moved back and nestled her way into his chest. Chase squeezed her close to him. He wanted to protect her from her nightmares, and this was maybe the best way he knew how.
“Don’t let go Daddy. Okay? I don’t want to lose you again.”
Chase kissed the top of her head. “Don’t worry sweetie. I’m never letting you go. I promise.” Even if he and Stacy ended up getting a divorce, he would keep that promise. No matter what, he would never let his kids go. He loved them, and that was all that mattered.
