Martin Goldman - Dark August (1976) A surprisingly interesting indie horror film from the 70s which follows a man plagued by a curse after he accidentally kills a young woman. The whole film is an exercise in paranoia and tension but with some interesting magical elements. The script of the film was actually written by the main couple in the film, the cursed man and his girlfriend, which is pretty interesting. The magical elements beyond the curse which opens the film are mainly in the character played by Kim Hunter (A Street Car Named Desire, A Matter of Life and Death). Kim plays a white witch who practices a mix of folk and ritual magic and although the rituals she preforms are a bit of a mish-mash they are not figments of the scriptwriter's imagination. There's a Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram, there's invocation of IAO, Kabbalistic references, a not terrible reading of Tarot cards, one of the few where the Death arcanum doesn't actually mean death! . None of it is perfect, of course, but this is worth pointing out as clearly being one of the rare films that actually demonstrates some knowledge of ritual beyond the fancy of the writers. It is also interesting that nothing truly unexplainable or supernatural happens in the film, the rituals don't produce pretty lights or immediate effects, and it's hard to tell if anything supernatural is happening in the film at all! The film itself ends up being a tense cat-and-mouse tale about escaping a curse with some pretty impressive scenes, such as a particularly freaky dog attack. The cool soundtrack and amazing Vermont scenery are also worth noting. A good sombre watch which is more psychological thriller than actual horror film, but still worth watching.
