On my own, I decided I wanted more vibrancy within the photograph. After playing around with it i decided i liked the look of it all the way up, it made the pink ribbon and the caravan much brighter and the whole image much happier and warmer. When it came to exposure i struggled a bit as the original image was poorly exposed with a high ISO. But with some help from my tutor i managed to achieve a better image that wasn’t so dark, which had been causing me to lose a lot of detail and create one with more highlights and whites.

I chose to add vignette to my image as i thought it suited the style of the image as well as adding a bit of depth and focus on the centre points. I’m not entirely happy with the image  have chosen but this is all about practice so posting will allow me to see my progress.

Who is the artist you have chosen?

Johannes Vermeer

When were they working?

October 31,1632 to December 15,1675

With what period/movement are they associated?

One of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age, with Frans Hals and Rembrandt. He was associated with the Baroque art style. One of leading artists who used high contrast of light and dark.

Vermeer is associated with the Baroque style and with Frans Hals and Rembrandt, two of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden age. Like Vermeer, Frans Hals and Rembrandt also painted commoners instead of church idols.

What is their signature technique and/or style? What are they known for?

He has a reputation of working slowly and with great care. He is famous for the high light and dark contrasts in his work; his characters are usually exposed under a soft and bright light, a technique that is also heavily utilized among today’s photographers. Vermeer is known for his famous artworks like the “Milkmaid” and “Christ with Martha Marry”.

How do you plan on adapting the artist’s technique and/or style to create your own original artwork?

Since one of the core masteries is the usage of light, I’m going to mimic that in my own original work. I am going to draw a a portrait, but in a traditional chinese style, which combines the two signature techniques of Johannes Vermeer: the use of light and shadow and the dark clean background.

What materials and process will you use?

I will draw the work on the ipad and then use Photoshop and Polarr-both are after-effect software that will enhance the work. I will mostly be using Procreate to create the original painting. I will use the brush in Procreate, which I think is called oil pastel. It’s the only type of brush I can find that is comparable to the ones Vermeer used.

Will you be working from a reference photo (a photo to help you create your artwork)? If so, include one below.

Yes, I will work from Vermeer’s two famous works: The Milkmaid and Girl with a Pearl Earring.

The Milkmaid gives me the idea of generating a soft, side on lighting and Girl with a Pearl Earring will form base of my Portrait-the high contrast and dark background.

What is their most famous artwork? Include a photo of it and label it with the identifying info (artist, date and title).

One of Vermeer’s most famous paintings is Girl with a Pearl Earring (1655). This artwork was considered revolutionary since it was one of the first pieces to compare light and dark contrast to an extraordinary extent.
