On the cover of Muziek Expres, 1974.
“[T]he pressure I got under that year [1974] was ridiculous. I went through so many things: produced two other albums, Shankar Family and Friends, and The Place I Love by Splinter. And I produced an Indian musical festival, which had taken me years to get together, with 15 or 16 classical Indian musicians all playing ensemble, like an orchestra—which they never do. In India you see solo players or two performers with a tabla player. In 1974 I went to India, got them all together, they came to Europe, Ravi wrote all the material. It rocked. Then came my own album and this tour I had lined up. And I also met my wife [Olivia] around then. I wrote the song ‘Dark Horse’ in the studio with Ringo and [Jim] Keltner and I never got to finish it. I took this half-finished album with me to tour rehearsals in Los Angeles and got my voice blown out by singing all day long.” - George Harrison, Musician, November 1987 Q: “You met your wife, Olivia, at the end of what seems to have been a pretty low period for you personally – 1974.” George Harrison: “Yeah, well after I split up from Patti[e] [Boyd], I went on a bit of a bender to make up for all the years I’d been married. If you listen to ‘Simply Shady,’ on Dark Horse, it’s all in there —my whole life at that time was a bit like [laughing] Mrs. Dale’s Diary [a now defunct British radio soap opera].” Q: “Were you going down fast?” GH: “Well, I wasn’t ready to join Alcoholics Anonymous or anything — I don’t think I was that far gone — but I could put back a bottle of brandy occasionally, plus all the other naughty things that fly around. I just went on a binge, went on the road... all that sort of thing, until it got to the point where I had no voice and almost no body at times. Then I met Olivia and it all worked out fine. There’s a song on the new album, ‘Dark Sweet Lady’: ‘You came and helped me through/When I’d let go/You came from out the blue/Never have known what I’d done without you.’ That sums it up.” - Rolling Stone, April 19, 1979 (x)

22 years since his passing, for what would have been his 80th birthday, I am overjoyed to announce that we are bringing my father’s music catalogue back home to Dark Horse Records, the company he started back in 1974. We look forward to releasing only the finest of packages and hope the fans join us on the deepest of dives into our archives as we continue to grow his legacy through our partnership with BMG, starting with the release of his entire back catalog in Spatial Audio, for the first time, on Apple Music. We also will be using this opportunity to make all the custom limited vinyl that we can get away with. Happy 80th Dad!!! We love you always.

Record Store Day and The Beatles - A History (Part 2)
Just before Record Store Day Black Friday we looked at all The Beatles and solo releases associated with Record Store Day (held each April), and Record Store Day Black Friday (held each November), over the 17 years since RSD first began. Of course for avid collectors there’s a sub-category of releases that come out on these two days per year that are essential as well. These are records in some…

Song Review: Yusuf/Cat Stevens - “Here Comes the Sun” (Acoustic)
Here comes the cover - Yusuf/Cat Stevens’ rendition of “Here Comes the Sun,” that is.
It sounds as if Stevens is singing karaoke over George Harrison’s isolated acoustic-guitar tracks with the other Fabs relegated to phantom status. Which is to say, Stevens’ take on the Beatles’ number is pointless, particularly given his struggles with a few of the high notes.
The remake is out to announce Stevens’ signing with the Harrison family’s Dark Horse Records and to mark the 80th anniversary of the Quiet Beatle’s birth, which falls Feb. 25.
“I’m happy to sing one of his songs, especially as it represents the returning of light and hope to a seriously dark and broken world,” Stevens said in a statement.
This “Sun” comes with a parenthetical “(Acoustic)” attached, suggesting another version may be in the offing. But one is enough.
Grade card: Yusuf/Cat Stevens - “Here Comes the Sun” (Acoustic) - C-

love the divide on the upcoming group killing session between people that are going "OH GOD DONT DO IT THAT'S SO IRRESPONSIBLE YOU'RE JUST GONNA PISS OFF THE TOWN AGAIN" and people that are going "GET HER FUCKING ASS" i agree with both perspectives equally, personally

The Apple Years Feature - George Harrison
So far as I can tell this kaleidoscopic journey through George's discography from 1968 to 1975 isn't available to watch anywhere online, so here it is!
Originally only available on the bonus DVD included with The Apple Years box set in 2014.

Photo 1 by Mark Sullivan.
“When I got Dark Horse Records, I had a couple of artists come up with logos, and there was one guy who painted one that looked really nice, with a nice color scheme, but it was a Chinese horse. I wanted something kind of different, and I was in India early in 1974 and I just thought I’m bound to find something if I keep my eyes open. One day I was in this placed called Udaipur and I looked across the street in the market, and I thought I could see some little pictures of enamel. And I got across the street and it was tins of paint on this stall. And I looked at all the tins, and they all had different labels on them, and one of them had the horse. It was a white horse but it had seven heads, and I thought, there’s my logo! I bought the tin can, brought it back and gave it to the artist and got him to make it dark and turn it ‘round so it would run the right way around the label. That’s the drag now about CDs: you don’t get to have any nice logos you can see turning.” - George Harrison, Goldmine, November 27, 1992 “[Jan Steward] created the logo for George Harrison’s record label, Dark Horse. It features the seven-headed flying horse Uchchahishravas from Indian art and mythology.” - The Los Angeles Times, August 11, 2020 “‘George always considered himself to be a dark horse — under the radar,’ [Olivia] says. ‘It’s interesting considering he was so out there [in the public]. But he was very internalized. If you looked at him onstage, he didn’t physically jump around and express himself like that. In that dark-horse way, people wouldn’t expect you to be a songwriter or be spiritual or funny, because you’re a dark horse. Nobody really knows what’s going on with you.’ Harrison told [Jim] Keltner he was starting his own record company and even showed him an illustration of the Uchchaihshravas, a seven-headed horse common in Hindu mythology, which would serve as the company’s logo. ‘He was just the king of all horses, the prototype for all horses, the best horse ever,’ says Dhani of the symbol. ‘He turned the tide in the battle and just generally was seen as this powerful vehicle for protection and overcoming.’” - Rolling Stone, March 9, 2020

Record Store Day and The Beatles - A History
With Record Store Day Black Friday 2024 coming up we started thinking about all the RSD releases there had been over the years involving The Beatles both as a group and as solo artists. Just when did they start to get involved? And has anyone done a complete look back on all the releases associated with RSD over the years? Record Store Day was conceived in back in 2007 at a gathering of…

Words: Ben Forrester Arab Strap – I’m totally fine with it 👍 don’t give a fuck anymore 👍(Rock Action) 2021 brought us the first Arab Strap album in 16 years! Following a well received reunion tour, Scotland’s finest grumps put their money where their mouths were and came back with arguably their best record. Not only did it open up a whole new fanbase that had missed them first time round, but…
