Clydesdale
The Clydesdale is a Scottish breed of draught horse. It is well-muscled and strong, with an arched neck, high withers, and a sloped shoulder.
Belle aka RoseBelle
Mare - Adult - Dapple Rose Grey
Betty aka BigDream
Mare - Youngster - Light Bay Sabino
Dragon aka DragonFire
Gelding - Adult - Black
Iroh aka FlameFather
Gelding - Adult - Black Extensive Sabino
Philippe aka LoveRunner
Gelding - Adult - Flaxen Chestnut Pangare'
Phoenix aka FireBird
Mare - Adult - Black Sabino
Royale aka RoyalGuardian
Stallion - Adult - Dark Bay Sabino
Expect extreme bias out of this one. I love drafts as many of you know and this breed was one of the first drafts that came out after I got lifetime so again I have sentimental attachment. BUT I do believe these guys still hold up! The gaits are all still pretty solid particularly the trot which is very fancy. The FUR! This breed is so cute and fluffy looking I desperately want to pet them. They are perfect and I will take no criticism of them.
10/10

ok sorry in advance for bothering you, feel free to tell me to get lost, but i was wondering if you, the resident expert, have any monster romance recs that aren’t way too. nsfw i guess? maybe it’s just me but i’m having a hard time finding any. like i’m more interested in the slow burn and the romance but the genre seems to be mainly fast paced erotica and i just can’t get into it
OOh!!! No need to be sorry, I'm always happy to answer stuff like this and talk about (cleaner) monster romances!! I'm honored you'd consider me an expert, though! 🥺💛I feel like I don't actually talk about monster romances all that much!
But I agree that it can be hard to find a monster romance that isn't erotica. Not that erotica isn't good, I just like seeing slow burn romances, too!
I wish I could provide a longer list, but here's what I got so far! (and if anyone finds this and wants to add onto this list, feel free to do so in comments, tags, reblogs, etc)
I will provide links/titles to these stories, say the genre(s), provide a short synopsis in my own words, and then say why I recommend it below the cut!
Axiom's End by Lindsay Ellis | sci-fi, alternate history, conspiracy fiction, action/adventure
"An alternate history novel set in 2008 where whistleblower Nils Ortega leaks information to the public that the US government is secretly harboring extraterrestrial refugees. Cora Sabino, Nils' daughter, finds herself developing a connection with one of these aliens after inadvertently becoming the sole communication between humans and aliens."
This series is fucking great!! Admittedly, the monster/alien romance take more of a backseat to the larger plot, and mostly focuses on themes surrounding humanity, human rights, language, trauma, etc. Ellis does such a great job at writing characters that are just so... human, and deep. There is so much complexity and nuance that goes into this series, and just... it's so good! Definitely recommend if you're more into the super slow burns, alien romances, alien action movies like Michael Bay's Transformers series or Independence Day.
"The Courtship of Mr. Lyon" and "The Tiger's Bride" in The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter | Gothic, feminist fiction, fairytale retelling, horror, anthology
"'The Courtship of Mr. Lyon' follows the romance between Beauty and Beast after Beauty's father takes one of the lion-faced Beast's white roses while taking shelter following a car accident; in 'The Tiger's Bride' a young woman is sent to live with a mysterious masked man after her father gambles her away in a game of cards."
Honestly this book, though a collection of short stories, is one of my all-time favorite books! Carter's writing style is so, so gorgeous and lyrical, and she provides such fantastic, dark, moody, gory, horrific feminist fairytales. Her story "The Bloody Chamber" is also worth checking out! Honestly, this whole book is great!
Beauty: A Retelling of Beauty and the Beast and Rose Daughter by Robin McKinley | Fantasy, romance, fairytale retelling
"Classic Beauty and the Beast retellings."
Despite both being BATB retellings by the same author, both are so, so good in their own ways! While Beauty is way more classic and straightforward in its retelling, the characters are so endearing, the fantasy world is enchanting, and the writing is so *chefs kiss*. Rose Daughter is much the same, only slightly more adult in its tone and writing style - and its ending!
The Shape of Water by Guillermo del Toro and Daniel Kraus | Romance, historical
"A mute janitor working in a high-security government facility falls in love with an amphibious creature."
Yeah, yeah, this is basically the novelized version of the movie lmao. I've not read the whole novel itself, but it's not half-bad!! It's decent enough - though I still feel like the movie to be better. Still worth checking out, I think!
Frankenstein's Monster by Susan Heyboer O'Keefe | Historical
"A sequel, of sorts, to Mary Shelley's classic novel. What becomes of Frankenstein's monster after Frankenstein dies? Where does he go, left to wander the earth?"
Not really a romance, per say, but there are SOME elements of romance! Mostly, this book follows Frankenstein's monster following the OG novel, who he all meets, and it is very much a character study on the monster! It's super fascinating, but its writing style is super similar to Mary Shelley's, so this very much reads like a classic novel. Honestly, I love how O'Keefe was able to mimic Shelley's style so well! But, again, romance is way more lowkey and this is more of a character study than anything else. Definitely reccomend if you loved the OG Shelley novel!
Beauty and the Beast by Megan Kearny | Webcomic, romance, fantasy, fairytale retelling
"A retelling of Beauty and the Beast."
Beautifully illustrated and wonderfully told, this comic is just SO GOOD!! It very much has the same vibes as Robin McKinley's novels, and is steeped in a cozy fantasy atmosphere! The characters are so loveable, the story intriguing, and just AAAUUGGGHHH SO GORGEOUS!!
Netvor: Beauty and the Beast by @rosesnwater | Fantasy, romance, fairytale retelling
"Aceline Capet swears to slay the monster Netvor that lurks in the forest surrounding her village - and ends up becoming entrenched in the world of magic and monsters and Fae."
LEGIT JUST UGH!!!!!!!! THIS NOVEL IS SO FUCKING GOOD!! Legit this is one of my all-time favorite reads from this year! If you love fantasy featuring actual, lore-accurate faeries and super intriguing slow burn romance with endearing characters, please please PLEASE check this out!!!!!!! I SWEAR YOU WONT BE DISSAPOINTED!! Definitely recommend if you love fantasy movies like Legend, Labyrinth, Thumbelina, Howl's Moving Castle, Disney's Beauty and the Beast, etc. or books like Naomi Novik's Uprooted, Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Robin McKinley's work, etc.! It also currently being rewritten as a(n equally beautiful) webcomic that should definitely be checked out as well!
That Which We Call Beast by @raph-fangirl | Historical fiction, romance, fairytale retelling
"A young woman is seeking marriage, and comes into contact with a mysterious bachelor that hides himself from her behind a veil."
Basically if Jane Austen wrote Beauty and the Beast! Definitely a well-written slow burn! It's not completed yet, but with what's available to read it's legit so beautiful!! The prose is so well-crafted, and it legit feels as though I'm reading an Austen novel! Definitely recommend if you love films like the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice!
Then uhhhh not to toot my own horn but if you wanna read a Victorian Era Gothic romance-horror BATB retelling with a pathetic meow-meow of a monster I offer my story The Monster and the Butterfly- 🤲🥺
These are all the recs I have for now! Again, if there are any you'd like to add, whether they be published, a friend's online work, or your own work!! I hope these are helpful and satisfactory enough for ya!
Again, I love talking about monster romances, thank you so so much for this ask!!!! 🥺💛

I don't know why my brain wanted me to this, so here's the 141 fellers + Alejandro, Rudy and König as RDR2 horses (or horses in general) because why the fuck not! No one asked for this!
1. Captain Price is definitely a Mustang, but the Tiger Striped Bay coat, or maybe the Black Overo coat mustang. I was gonna put an Arabian, but he's 100% Mustang energy
2. Soap is a Missouri Fox Trotter in the Silver Dapple Pinto coat, or any Missouri Fox Trotter for the matter. Sassy horses.
3. Gaz is also a Mustang in the Red Dun Overo coat, or the Spotted Tricolor Norfolk Roadster
4. Ghost is debatable, but he's definitely a Breton in Grey Steel or the Iron Grey Ardennes. Mostly because of its built, but any muscular looking horse will do. Perhaps the Splash White American Paint
5. Alejandro has Marble Sabino Criollo energy because look how beautiful it is!
6. Rudy gives off Dark Bay, Turkoman energy, or Sorrel Overo, Criollo energy.
7. König on the other hand, is the Shire horse in any coat! So here it is in Raven Black. A giant horse for a giant man!

Hello it's me, the horse genetics obsessed anon posting from a sideblog.
Caveat: I'm not an expert. I learned most of what I know from playing various horse games that try to have realistic genetics and I have researched a lot of real genetics but there are things outside of my understanding.
So grey is a completely separate gene from everything. If you think of genes as layers, grey is the very top layer. It goes over everything.
So you can have a bay horse and layered over that bay can be grey.
Horses do usually go grey over their lifetime and horses with two copies of the gene (as far as I know) grey faster and more thoroughly than horses with only a single copy.
There are a lot of different types of greying patterns. Dapples, fleabitten, etc. Bloody shoulder, I believe, is a type of greying where part of the coat just fails to grey out.
Here is where my knowledge coming mainly from games tends to fail me: I *think* greying can also cause "hyper-pigmentation" which is when the hairs go darker before going grey. Which is part of why I feel like the horse in your original post may be a palomino that's going grey, if we are to believe the ad that it was at one point a palomino.
But it is also possible that the horse is a roan. The pictures aren't great, but it looks like the face isn't as greyed as the body, which is more typical of roans than greys (in my experience). Yes, the horse isn't as pale as what you would expect with a palomino, but there are many many shades of palomino and it could be a very dark one.
Genuinely, in regards to your original question about the true color of the horse: There is no way for us to know for sure based purely on pictures. Even seeing it in person may not give a definitive answer because the roan/grey is covering up the base coat color.
In order to know with 100% certainty, you would need to either have seen it grow up or get a test to see what genes it has.
Going by phenotype, without knowing the genotype, I would personally call it simply either a grey sabino or a roan sabino (in person, one probably could tell whether it was grey or roan but I can't judge from those pictures fully), since we don't know what color is for sure under there.
I've tried to contain myself to only what's relevant to the original point but I'd be happy to go further into details of horse genetics in general if anyone wants. I'm *obsessed* so I have a lot more to say. 😅
All horse colors can be grey. So yes, palomino can be grey.
My autism is compelling me to give you a horse genetics lesson because it's my special interest but I shall refrain.
PLEASE explain horse genetics to me, I would love that<333

Ride up - 12 lessons in England
I've just moved to the UK for university and I started taking riding lessons at the place affiliated with the university in November? Maybe October.
Guys. I'm having a really nice time.
There was that initial weird sussing-out moment from the horse people, been sitting on a bunch of school ponies, couple of schoolmasters, but now sort of moving towards schoolmasters/babies and onto the More Exciting horses. They sort of tested me out with a Big Bay warmblood/Irish Draft gelding schoolmaster in my first lesson this year (who handed my ass to me a little, but I won't lie I loved it, 10/10 would do again) and then I had sort of a rough ride on a lesson pony who'd been trouble in the school (the lesson before, I'd gotten this just GORGEOUS 13hh skewbald pony pulled out of the New Forest as a feralish young mare with a foal at foot, 8ish years old and cute as a button, and JUST like a pony I used to ride back at home. The coach kept shouting out,
'She looks really happy!' and tbh I was glad because I was having a fantastic time on her, pressing all her lil buttons. She had ALL the transitions in place, from halt to canter and back down to halt. She had a lil leg yield! And a not-half-bad shoulder-in. Maybe the nicest I'd managed to ride lateral-work). And then I had a rough ride and felt very dejected because other Trouble School Pony didn't magically turn angelic for me like the previous Trouble School Pony (tbh I came off him 45 minutes later feeling as if I'd made the problem worse, not better).
And then on Monday I got Bob
Bob is REALLY FRIGGING CUTE. He's a big (16h+) Irish Cob/drum horse type, with stupid big hairy feet and a dumb white face, one brown one blue eye, a MOUSTACHE (!) with funny dark ears and a blue roan/sabino thing going on. He's a looker. About 8 years old, comes from a maybe not so nice home (origin story unclear) and the instructor describes him to me as 'a bit tense' when I'm getting on. And she's standing at my knee looking up at me, and I suddenly felt 15 years old with my old instructor from back home standing next to me and talking me through a new horse before a ride. It felt good to remember that I've got hours under my belt and experience, LOTS of different horses and mostly successful rides. Some real bad ones thrown in there, but when I look back at those really bad rides later, they're probably the ones where I learnt the most about myself, the ones that changed me for the better.
And I just sort of had a ride and enjoyed it. And it was simple. Calm. A little wiggly sometimes, a bit messy on the right rein, but he was an uncomplicated, fundamentally good loveable baby who just wanted to do a good job. He tried so very hard. His feet are Very Big and hairy and cantering is hard work, but he tried his best at laterals. He was very, very sweet. And we had fun together and were both better for it and I'd happily do it again.
And that's where I'm at. Next lesson's on Monday evening.

Moral Support
It was another ordinary day at Smith Farms. The green grass swayed in the breeze as the overcast sky hung over the Kentucky land. Today was slightly different. A guest had come for a short while.
All of this was Gary’s. Sure his father owned the house and land, but the horses that inhabited it belonged to Gary. They came when called, ran to greet him, and most listened.
“Hey moron, step back a bit,” Gary ordered, pushing his companion back.
Jimmy had been the guest.
The ginger complied, as he didn’t want to get kicked by these massive beasts. These things were about as big as Norton Williams and Bif Taylor. Maybe they even had a few inches on them.
Gary stepped inside the stall of a young stallion, Rue. Rue was a green four-year-old with hardly any experience other than halter training. He was the son of his mare Deady Debutante, although it’d be s shocker to some. Rue’s sooty buckskin coat contrasted with Debutante’s bold bay sabino pattern. Rue had no other markings than the white diamond on his forehead covered by his puffy forelock.
He gently put the yellow halter over his head and led the youngster to the cross ties. Jimmy watched Gary gently tack up the young stallion. He noticed how Gary kept flopping and kicking around anything he could. Rue’s ears flicked and turned at all the noises. His head perked up a few times upon hearing the metal pang and jostle. Jimmy would follow as Gary led Rue into the indoor arena and chose to sit on the bleachers and spectate. For moral support.
Gary placed a foot in the stirrup and hoisted himself up and over into the saddle. The brunette patted the stallion on the neck to let him know he was being good. Once Rue had adjusted, Gary applied pressure on his sides to have him walk. The pair maneuvered around the arena, slow at first, but quickly picked up the pace over trot poles. Occasionally Gary corrected Rue on his pace and used his crop to make him mind the speed limit.
Jimmy spectated from the stands, watching as Gary controlled this thousand-pound stallion like a bike. He made it look so easy, so effortless. In a way, it did make Jimmy a tad bit jealous. Sometimes he wished he was sophisticated and well-written. Instead, Jimmy was just a loose cannon with nobody there to restrain his impulsive hostile nature. His brown eyes up to the skylight. He took notice of how dark the sky was. It looked like an evening at only 3-o’-clock in the afternoon. The clouds were heavy and dark, and a storm brewed above. He imagined it brewing in the sky. The water would swirl and churn the sky like a whirlpool.
Gary didn’t focus on the clouds. What he focused on was getting Rue to clear these tiny jumps. Rue wasn’t exactly the bravest of stallions and could be timid. That was what Gary wanted to eliminate. He desired to get Rue out of his comfort zone. Maybe, someday even turn him into a cross country champion, or perhaps a Grand Prix jumper like his dam.
However, his hopes, and Gary himself, crashed down quite literally.
A massive roar of thunder ripped through the air and rattled the walls. Rue squealed and bucked. The stallion stumbled over his own feet as Gary attempted to keep his seat. But Gary was sent harshly to the floor as Rue bolted.
Jimmy’s eyes widened, and he immediately got down from the stands. He quickly came to Gary’s side, kneeling over him.
"Gary, are you alright?" Jimmy asked.
“I’m fine- moron-” Gary rasped, clearly holding back tears as he cradled his leg.
“Let me see.” Jimmy insisted as he pried Gary’s hands from his injured leg.
After Jimmy prodded a bit, he concluded that Gary had sprained or broken his ankle. Without even acknowledging Rue, Jimmy hoisted Gary into his arms.
“Put me down,” Gary wavered, “I can walk on my own.”
“No, you can’t. Also, didn’t anyone tell you it’s ok to cry, Gary?” He asked.
“Shut up, moron.” He hiccupped, refusing to swallow his pride. However, a few tears did slip from his eyes.
Jimmy had taken him back to the stall area and had Gary sit down and take off his boot. Now that had to be painful for Gary. His ankle had already started to swell up. The ginger ventured past the tack rack and into the feed closet. There he dug into the deep freezer and retrieved an ice pack. He walked out and sat beside Gary, handing the cold compress to him. The brunette carefully set it over his injured ankle. Jimmy saw his jaw clenched and that his eyes had been squeezed shut.
He sat beside Gary, carefully rubbing his back to comfort him for moral support.

I just found your blog and just wanted to ask you if you can comment something about the azulejo overo in criollos horses? I can't find info about anywhere and they are beautifull! 😢
In spanish-speaking countries, the term overo usually refers to a horse which, in english, we'd call sabino. The Sabino and White Spotting genes often cause extensive roaning as well as white patterning, so the parts of the horse's coat that aren't completely white seem to be diluted to a lighter color. In black or dark bay horses, the interspersed white hairs can make the coat look grey or blue. Here's an example of a horse referred to as overo azulejo:

The fall horses kinda got me thinking and tbh I feel like a lot of SSO's horses are kinda same-y if that makes any sense? I remember when the paint horses came out and seeing the chestnut one in Fort Pinta and then looking at the bay sabino Clydesdale that was there at the time and being like "Wow besides the mane these horses are the same color." I guess with normal horses I understand because they have to follow a breed's allowed coats and there's only so many coat colors to go around but with fantasy horses? Where anything is possible? Antheia looks like the songsorrow which already looked similar to the woodear. It even has the same mushroom thing going on as the woodear too. And as much as I love it, the embermane is the third dark-grey-to-black horse with a fiery mane we've gotten after the red and black nixie and the Galloper Whinfell. And while the snowdancer's magic coat is pretty distinct the non-magic coat is the third light grey on the arabian model and second dapple grey. I could go on but basically what I'm trying to say is I hope SSO starts thinking a little outside the box soon
.
#sso#ssoblr#star stable#star stable online#starstableonline#I agree with this since we KNOW that SSO is capable of making really good magic horses#it feels like they're just...losing their creativity at some points#that's just my opinion tho!
