Pteri or grarrl review when you have the time? Whichever out of the two you most feel like doing

(I can do both in two parts, but for right now I'll do the Pteri.)

The Pteri is one of several bird Neopets, but surprisingly all of the other birds are specific, distinct species (penguin, owl, etc.), making the Pteri surprisingly unique for just being a normal songbird. Another thing that's unique is that the Pteri has a long non-feathered tail, almost like a Zafara; a very unique addition for a bird and one that gives it a lot more flavor than it would have otherwise.

In terms of design, the Pteri uses a simple three-color palette; base color on top, creamy accents on the underbelly and inside wing, and a complimentary shade of yellow for the beak and feet. The eyes also have these unique fire-y markings to them that accent the underbelly. My only real issue with the design is that the two head feathers don't share the same shape as any of the other feathers, and look both too long and too thin to be read as just fluff. Otherwise, it's a solid design.

The Pteri hasn't changed much through conversion, outside of gaining more distinct chest fluff and slightly longer, fuller wings. I like the overall rounded shape of the original a bit more, but I also really like the 3/4s few the converted is in; having it be front-facing in the older artwork makes the details of the design harder to see. (Also, a moment of appreciation that they just subtly cupped the converted Pteri's wing instead of trying to give it hands or something. Hissi, take notes.)

Favorite Colours:

Faerie: The Faerie Pteri is simply beautiful, and everyone knows it. Instead of having butterfly wings tacked onto it, it instead runs with the bird idea by adding extra feathers to the tail, kind of like a mini peacock, and also adding more to the head and wings. It uses a gorgeous yellow as its primary color and accents it with white, orange, red, and purple, with the colors radiating outward in layers. The design also compliments the natural eye markings with additional markings around the entire eye as well as on the head and tail, and adds some lovely eye spots on the tail as well.

The converted version technically follows the same design as the original, minus the additional eye markings, but honestly the UC/styled pose shows off the markings better and has more flow to boot, making it far superior by default.

Darigan: Unlike Faerie, the converted Darigan Pteri doesn't look that great. The design is technically accurate to the original, but trying to make those features work on the default body shape just isn't happening, and a lot of detail got lost in the shading and highlights in the process.

However, the UC/styled version is really cool. It's one of the few tan Darigan pets that I don't wish were purple, with black accents for the finest feathers and red eyes for contrast. The long feathers and more raptor-like body shape really work well, and the talons on the hind feet are accented by the beak and various spikes. I also appreciate the subtle spotting.

Valentine: Not as fancy as the other two, but the Valentine's Pteri is quite nice; a mostly pink body with a subtle white gradient that transitions into heart markings. Like most good Valentine pets, it subtly integrates hearts into areas like the chest feathers, head feathers, and eye markings, and doesn't feel overly cluttered. I do think that the tail should've also been a heart, and something about the face reads as faintly sunburned to me, but it's still a nice color overall.

BONUS: The mutant Pteri is one of those mutants that's just a little too busy to be one of my all-time favs, but I do like it a lot. The cockatrice-esq body shape is super distinct and looks appropriately mutant-ish, and the teal, yellow, and red palette works great; not to mention the actual art quality is really good as well, with some lovely shading and linework. I do feel like the details should've been trimmed back—lose the long arm fingers, lose the red things on the tail (maybe just keep the final cream segment red instead), drop the patterning, maybe even make the wing feathers cream to break up the design a bit. Still, pretty good overall.

A few edge cases here; the Darigan Grarrl and Chomby are really bothering me lol I've been thinking about them all day. They're based off of dinosaurs and do keep all the important traits but the specific nature of the wings and such that were added give them such a strong draonic vibe that it's throwing me off.

Tentatively, I'm going to say that I will add all except for Darigan Grarrl, whom I will further consider. Keep in mind Neopets has a lot so, a fair few will have to be cut anyway.

fun facts about my neopets!

mostly like, how i got them! bc idk why but i keep all this information tucked in my brain all the time

weetjetokje was My Very First Ever Xweetok rescued from an 18 year old account that i thought was lost to time until i submitted a ticket and was able to get it back! as soon as i got her, i vowed that she'd never leave my side again and painted her starry! i believe i rescued her from the pound shortly after creating my account, since she's around a week older than the account itself.

bliaz was a gift from someone i can only imagine was a former unconverted trader who just wanted their former UC plushie cybunny to go to a good home. they randomly messaged me after seeing my board post looking for one and just offered to adopt her out to me 😭 she was born in 2001!! she is my oldest neopet

on the subject of gifts, the following other pets were random gifts:

Northdawn - the thing that sold me on keeping her was the fact that she's a royalboy grarrl, but her gender is female. i LOVE royal pets with funky genders, this is a thing with me (Jittomiru is also a female royalboy pet!!)

i gained a reputation for being a Xweetok Fanatic on the neoboards, and thus quite a few people just Gave Me their painted xweeetoks bc they knew i'd give them a good home. this includes:

-Soahpe

-Snomad

who were both given to me/traded to me by the same person! she wanted Snomad to go to a good home so she struck me a good trade deal, but she just gave Soahpe to me! :3

Mortanio has a similar origin story in which another person on the boards who LOVES xweetoks had him, but wasn't feeling inspired by his character. so they agreed to trade him to me on the premise that i keep him as a permie since i was looking for a halloween xweetok at the time!

Lilovia also was obtained like this!! she was technically my third robot xweetok i owned, and her previous owner agreed to do a robot xweetok nameswap with me bc i told them i'd keep Lilovia as a permie!

star_saver was a pound rescue who i saw was stuck in there since 2015 on lost and pound. it made my heart hurt bc his name was so sweet, so i exchanged one of my pets so that someone would rescue him from the pound, paint him relic, then trade him to me. (this is a weird arbitrary rule neopets has regarding trading pets for customs. don't worry about it)

i got InfernalCreature and Muimie from the same pet auction house last fall! this is a recurring bit where i will walk into a random pet auction house (or pah for short) and leave with one or two permies i didn't intend on getting.....i don't know why but these are the ones i usually end up latching onto the strongest too????!

i spent like a week THROWING all the fodder i found at FireEmblem's former owner before something struck their fancy and they agreed to trade him. i then rejoiced for like a month afterwards. he was the reason i got into neocash trading! bc i kNEW he needed to have a kickass custom to match his name.

prince_curse was another pound rescue who i had painted darigan then traded to me. i actually did trade him once in a pah, but i immediately regretted it and traded him BACK when i saw him listed in another pah :'3

Yhgo was obtained through a giveaway from a little group called "Second Chance Robotics" on the boards! they zap pets robot and then adopt them out to people! they were celebrating a milestone in their group, so they were giving away a robot draik to celebrate. robot draiks are notoriously tricky to obtain, as you can ONLY get them via the secret lab ray. i ended up applying and i wasn't chosen. BUT! the people in the group loved my application so much, they agreed to send me a completely DIFFERENT robot draik! and that's how i got Yhgo! :D

i think i might have rescued TroubledAngel from the pound bc i really wanted a stealthy gelert and that name just SCREAMED edgy guy to me. i used my premium perk to paint him stealthy bc this was back when stealthy paintbrushes were REALLY expensive

So recently, I decided to re-join Neopets with a brand new account for a fresh start. I currently have six pets on there, four of which were pound rescues (I definitely plan on adopting more if I find a way to buy some Neocash in order to get more pet slots), and I decided to draw the oldest out of my pets: Runawaydino the Darigan Grarrl!

I found this guy via a fansite called The Lost and Pound, which is basically a directory for pets that are currently in the Neopian Pound. I was looking for a Grarrl to adopt on there and this guy really stuck out to me. Not because he had a fancy paint brush color or anything (in fact, this guy was originally plain old green before I painted him), but because of his age. The site said that he was created all the way back in Y8 (aka 2006), which made him a particularly old pet. His original owner created him back when the Neopets site was very different than it is today, over a year before the Customization era started. Because of that, I thought it would be fun to draw him in one of those old circle backdrops that the site's pets had at the time. I also had to include his pet Gruslen Cheyenne in there because she's super cute. This was my first time drawing both a Grarrl and a Gruslen and I think both turned out pretty nice.

Side note: I was watching Pixar's Onward when I started sketching this and because of that I now picture Runawaydino sounding like Barley Lightfoot. 😀

Anyway I just traded for a lovely boy. And I’m designing him and his brother.

So this Brick the Darigan Grarrl c: I’m going to base his colors off of the bearded vulture because they’re the best vulture. And instead of a Trex I went more for a Yutyrannus kind of look.

Can’t decide if horns or no horns.
