Daphne Etta Maxwell Reid (July 13, 1948) is an actress, comedian, and former model. She is known for her role as the second Vivian Banks on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
She was born in New York City, the daughter of Rosalee and Green Maxwell. She is a graduate of The Bronx High School of Science.
She received a degree in Interior Design and Architecture from Northwestern University, which she attended on a scholarship, and where she became the first African American woman to be named homecoming queen. While at Northwestern she began a modeling career, signing with the Eileen Ford modeling agency. She was the first African American woman to be on the cover of Glamour magazine.
She had a recurring role as JT’s mother, Frances Hunter, on Eve, and played Juanita Lawrence on Let’s Stay Together. She is an accomplished photographer.
She married Robert Tubbs (1968-79). They had one son. She married actor Tim Reid (1982) and became stepmother to his two children. They owned and operated New Millennium Studios in Petersburg, Virginia, until 2014. Timothy Lee Reid (born December 19, 1944) is an actor and film director known for his roles in prime-time American television programs, such as Venus Flytrap on WKRP in Cincinnati, Marcel "Downtown" Brown on Simon & Simon, Ray Campbell on Sister, Sister and William Barnett on That '70s Show. He starred in Frank's Place, as a professor who inherits a Louisiana restaurant. He is the founder and president of Legacy Media Institute, a non-profit organization "dedicated to bringing together leading professionals in the film and television industry, outstanding actors, and young men and women who wish to pursue a career in the entertainment media". He and Daphne Maxwell Reid built New Millennium Studios in 1997. Located in Petersburg, Virginia the 57.4-acre site with its 14,850-square-foot sound studio was the only African American-owned film studio in the US since the 1930s, but one of the largest independent film studios outside of Hollywood. New Millennium Studios was used in dozens of movie and television productions, including scenes from the 2001 film "Hearts in Atlantis," of the Stephen King novel; parts of 2000's "The Contender," and elements of Steven Spielberg's 2012 film, "Lincoln," were all shot there. The Reids produced feature films of their own. He married Rita Ann Sykes (1966-1980) have two children together. He married actress Daphne Maxwell Reid (1982-). He was named to the board of directors of the American Civil War Center in July 2011 at Tredegar Iron Works. On May 10, 2014, he received a VCU honorary doctorate for his many outstanding and distinguished contributions. He delivered a commencement speech during the ceremony.
