dante believes that strength is the will to protect other people. vergil believes that strength is the ability to protect yourself.

this also reflects in how demonic they are vs how human they are. dante being the more human twin because power is something that must be exerted as little as possible, only to protect others, and the damage you do should be as little as you can. to reveal one’s nature as a devil is to frighten others away and isolate yourself, hurting the ones you love and becoming a target forever. vergil is more demonic because power is something that you must exert as much as possible so that no one will ever try to hurt you or cause trouble to begin with. a show of power is always necessary and to not express it is dangerous. to reveal one’s nature one’s nature as a devil is to frighten others away and isolate yourself, so that you can always be sure they know not to hurt you.

but both of them are also extremely closed about their feelings. both are terrified of vulnerability. dante won’t be genuine because then he has to face the constant fear he feels and that he really isn’t doing as well as he makes out to be. for the good of others, and to ignore what he feels. vergil won’t be genuine because he would have to face the constant fear and isn’t doing well. for the good of himself, so he can’t be hurt. scared guys who have difficulties being vulnerable. but when they are it is so nice because ohh finally dude you’re letting someone in and it’s warm and good and you’re going to be okay.
