This is just not noir. In fact, it’s the opposite of noir, from the way it portrays the hero to how it ends on a feel-good note. Marlowe is a 2022 neo-noir crime thriller film directed by Neil Jordan and written by William Monahan. Based on the 2014 novel The Black-Eyed Blonde by John Banville, writing under the pen name Benjamin Black, the film stars Liam Neeson, and features Diane Kruger, Jessica Lange, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Alan Cumming, Francois Arnaud, Ian Hart, Danny Huston, Daniela Melchior and Colm Meaney.

Marlowe https://bit.ly/40ASKgR Warmed-over Raymond Chandler isn’t quite the same as hard-boiled Raymond Chandler, but that’s what’s on offer in Marlowe, a strange misfire that looks like it wanted to make a high-concept colourised simulacrum of a darkly noirish 1940s-style thriller and then settled instead for bloodless pastiche. It’s second order stuff all the way, from Xavi Gimenéz’s deliberately un-cinematic, almost Hallmark TV cinematography, to screenplay writer William Monaghan’s flat adaptation of John Banville’s novel, itself a simulacrum of Raymond Chandler’s The Maltese Falcon. David Holmes’s non-committal (bewildered?) soundtrack kind of says it all. It’s all set in 1939, where ex-cop-now-gumshoe Marlowe (Liam Neeson) is visited by a rich, breathy, libidinous blonde (Diane Kruger) who wants … Read more

Marlowe (15): Scriptwriters that deserve to go for a swim with the fishies, capeesh?
#onemannsmovies review of "Marlowe" (2023). #MarloweMovie. Good premise for a Neeson vehicle but lumbered with awful dialogue. 2/5.
A One Mann’s Movies review of “Marlowe” (2023). As a production company, A24 have developed a fabulous reputation for releasing great stuff: “Everything Everywhere All at Once” being their latest Oscar winner. In contrast, Sky Original Movies seem to be a brand that, 8 times out of 10, deliver disappointments. And here’s their latest – “Marlowe” – released this week. From the trailer it looked…

Friends, had the chance after work this evening to take it a little easy and catch Liam Neeson in Neil Jordan's Marlowe. Not a perfect film to be sure but quite entertaining - thanks in no small part to the very solid performances by Neeson as well as the likes of Danny Huston, Colm Meaney, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje to name a few! #ilovemovies #neonoir #raymondchandler #popculture #theatre https://www.instagram.com/p/Cphjnvwu85x/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Tumblr media
