Autobiography

Isagani David T. Gonzales III

Grade 12 STEM - 4

My nameis Dave, I was born in January 19, 2001 in CDC Hospital.i was raised in Bambang Los Banos Laguna and i Live with my family. my family is composed of my older sister and me with may Mother and Father and my cousin is living our too, and Us you know where all members of Iglesia Ni Cristo or INC for short and yes where all proud for being a member of INC.

My mother’s name is shiela T. Gonzales she a simple yet loving house wife that take’s care of us Three. and my father’s name is Isagani David G. Gonzales Jr hes an OFW for almost three year’s now and my older sister’s name is Isabella Danise Gonzales she’s in collage in her 4 year almost graduating the course of nutritionist and lastly my younger cousin’s name is joko tagle and i dont care must about him sad but true but i still love him.

I first graduated in bambang elementary school with no honor. and second i graduated in los banos national highschool (poblacion) and yet still no honor but i was in the top ten in my class the year. and now i’m currently going to  AMA Computer Collage of Calamba and the track of Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics or STEM and i admit its hard but i’m doing my very best to pass this track because in 8-9 months ill be graduating and going to collage ill be take the course of electrical or computer engineer i’m still making up my mind.

I want to become an electrical or computer engineer is because there three reasons first because we have a small computer shop beside our house. second is i like tinkering with electrical things and i like playing computer games and the last is i come from a family of engineer’s so i’m following the family path of becoming an engineer. but the most important goal of them all is helping my parents and paying them back for there hard work and effort for raising me and my sister.

I was an very active kid growing up back then when the world means nothing all i care about is playing with my friends and eating lots of junk food. like that time i come home all dirty and covered with scratches and my mom scolded me and yet i’m still happy even if i was scolded because back then i believe until today when you get scolded by your parents that means they care and love you. even today i get scolded for being lazy.

the next thing i want to say is my motto in life is “just keep moving forward” that saying comes from the movie Meet The Robinson’s the motto was lewis robinson from the future when i watch the movie when i was like 13 years old and i know what the meaning of the motto i liked its since then i lived by that motto because you don’t have to look back on the past just keep moving forward for a bright future ahead for you.

My role model in life is my dad because i’m he’s son and he always know what to say in every problem that i encounter in life and at the and of his advice he said “i have been there son” that always motivated me to do better in life  and because of my dad i have driven to success every time i talk to him. and my main belief in life is always believe in GOD for he is our savior in life and he’s the one how give us life.

My favorite movie at the time is Ender’s games its a sci fi movie its about destroying the aliens that tries to conquer there planet so the NASA design an program for dealing with the aliens, they train children to destroy the aliens. my favorite book is harry potter by J.k rowling, because when i was 15 my dad brought home a book titled harry potter and the  prisoner of azkaban. i finish reading that book in four days after i came home from school.

The one thing i wish i know when i was 10 is have to love the right person.  because if i know that back them i don’t have to experience the pain that i have felt when my heart was broken to pieces. next is how to play dota back then i started playing dota in 2013. and dota was 3 years old back then. what if i have know how to played back them i could be a pro right now .

My favorite childhood picture is when my grandmother and grandfather come home for the 6 time in the philippines all of the grandchildren of Isagani Sr was all there. its sad because we are not complete anymore the eldest of the cousins is marriage and lives in canada and the rest even me we all are busy with our school work even if we get together we still are missing 2-3 member of the Gonzales clan cousins.

Now i watch survivor i love survivor but something on my mind has been bothering me.

Were currently at winnars at war basically every winner of survivor vs each other and im honestly sorta disappointed.

We had like the 3 best that truly ran this game or in my opinion played probably some of the best strategy and manipluation which was paravti, boston rob and sandra.

And you would think now that they are doing winners at war people who also had their own manipluation and arent just little sheep that will just hand the win.

Boston rob managed to make it to the swap before he implemented his buddy system the fellow players got tired and knew he was trying to control them so they offed him.

Sandra i assumed probably thought danise would never use her idol to protect herself due to her word alone as sandra basically like boston rob effectivly mind controlled people XD and instead the queen of survivor got epicly blind sided.

Parvati allied with boston rob at the start which is basically announcing to the tribe. “HEY IM ALREADY A DANGEROUS PLAYER AND I JUST ALLIED MYSELF WITH ANOTHER EPICLY DANGEROUS PLAYER.” And when the time was right her tribe voted her out.

I dont understand they were probably some of the best the 3 of them but they came in knowing that their tricks probably wouldnt work but did it anyways and then looked confused they got blindsided.

It sorta reminds me when i think last season that had wentworth come back where she sorta just did nothing the entire season and then got betrayed when the last time she had come on she kicked major ass.

I dont know if they were potentially throwing it or honestly thought the things that make them dangerous would work on people that would not fall for it and why didnt they try new strategies..

Auntieviews Volume 5: Dawn Ammirati Serafin – The Brownie Aunt

Hello fellow Aunts and Aunties! Welcome back to Auntieviews.  In this edition, we’ll be hearing from Dawn Ammirati Serafin, The Brownie Aunt.

Dawn and I initially met only virtually through a Facebook Group for Aunts.  After months of chatting, Dawn decided it was time for us Long Island Aunties to finally meet one another.  So together we organized an Aunt date.  Along with Debbie Danise-Acosta (The Sweet Potato Fry Aunt), we met up and shared a lovely brunch together.  It was during our time that I decided to get my ass in high gear and really start networking with other Aunts.  I loved hearing about Dawn and Debbie’s experiences with their niblings.  They just got me.  Aunthood is where it’s at!  So thank you to Debbie and Dawn for inspiring me.  Now let’s get on with Dawn’s Auntieviews.

  Background:

  Dawn lives in Merrick, New York, a town on Long Island.  She grew up in the Bronx, New York, but moved out to Long Island with her husband.  She’s a hard-working teacher and a recipe blogger at Real House Wives Cook.  I took a quick peek at some of her recipes, and I must recommend her Crinkle Cookies!  They’re one of my all-time favorite desserts.  If you like brownies, you’ll LOVE these cookies!  They’re simple to make, but more importantly, delicious to taste.  The full recipe is on her site.

Since she’s a teacher, she’s lucky to get the summers off.  It’s during this time that she likes to travel, go to the beach (it’s Long Island, it’s kinda a law to go to the beach if you live here), or lounge around the pool.  But she can’t spend all of her time alone.  She also enjoys to heading out to the Vineyards on Eastern Long Island for wine tasting with girlfriends and going out to dinner with her hubby.  Teachers are one of the most important professions because they help raise our youth.  She deserves all this time off to recharge for the new school year!

  The Interview

  What is your background as an Aunt? How long of you been an aunt and how long ago did you first became one?

I became an aunt 11 years ago and I have 9 nieces and nephews, 2 nieces through friends, and I am also a godmother to my cousin’s daughter.

What do your nieces or nephews call you?

My nieces and nephews call me Aunt Dawnie or Aunt Dawn and  Fairy Godmother to 3 of my godchildren.

Do you live close to your nieces and nephews or are you a long-distance aunt?

All of my nieces and nephews are about 30-45 minutes from me so it’s not difficult to get to spend time with them.

How old are your nieces/nephews now?

They range from ages 14 down to 3 months and everything in between.

What’s your favorite thing to do with your niblings? Either currently or from when they were growing up.

My favorite thing to do with my niblings is getting to spend alone quality time with them such as when I babysit them or take them out for a special outing. They love to do crafts with me and we enjoy going to the movies together.

Are you also a mother or childless Aunt? If you were childless is that by choice or by chance?

I am not a mother and whether it was by choice is rather a complicated question for me,  I guess I always assumed I would have children of my own when I was younger.  However, that being said I never had that urge for it.  What stands out most in my mind is being about 16 and hanging out with a friend of mine and her saying “Oh I can’t wait to have a baby and be a mom”.  My reaction to that was really?!!? I said, “Don’t you want to travel and live your life first?”  We clearly were not on the same page with what we hoped for our futures.  I felt like maybe something was wrong with me because I didn’t want that.  Then I talked myself into thinking it will all just come in time and fall into place meaning I’d get married and suddenly feel like I wanted to have a child.  Oddly enough I always knew I wanted to get married.  I ended up getting married at 37 and well we had the outlook that whatever will be will be and it just didn’t happen naturally.  I definitely was not the type to want to go through IVF and stuff.  I guess I just didn’t; want it bad enough. I like my life and I like my freedom.  I absolutely love being an aunt though!  So as to whether I am childless by choice or by chance, I guess I’d say a little bit of both if that makes any sense.

What is one of the biggest difficulties you’ve experienced as an Aunt?

One of the biggest difficulties is knowing when to step back and not intervene with what their parents say.

As an aunt what’s the biggest value you feel you bring to the family?

I think the biggest value as an aunt that I bring to the family is that they can count on me more so than their other aunts who have children of their own.  Being an aunt means bringing the fun.  I remember as a kid I loved my aunts but when I would see my Aunt Anna’s car turning the corner my eyes would light up and I was so happy she came over that’s what I want my family to feel when they see me.

What is one good piece of advice that you would give it to any new Aunt?

A good piece of advice I’d give to any new aunt is to know your boundaries and always be careful not to overstep them.  I always tell my niblings if its ok with your parents then its ok with me.  Also, enjoy them when you can because it does go quickly.  Make memories to last a lifetime.

What’s your proudest moment as an Aunt?

I’m not sure I have just one moment that I could say was my proudest.  They make me proud all the time.  When I see them in dance recitals I am proud. When I go to their baseball games I am proud.  When they call my name I am proud.  Or when they fall asleep in my arms I am proud.  I do remember seeing my 1st born nephew hours after he was born and just remember feeling so much love for him.  I couldn’t believe that I was so overcome with love and that he was a part of me too.  It was truly amazing and with the birth of each one, I felt more and more love.

I was once told that being a Mom is all cake and being an Aunt is like icing on the cake.  How do you feel about that comparison?

I do think that being an aunt is the icing on the cake.  It really is one of the best things.

If you had to compare your relationship as an Aunt to one food what would it be and why?

If I had to compare myself to a food it would be brownies because when I babysit them we always bake brownies and it has become our special thing.  It is our little tradition.

Final Paper

As a close relative of a stroke victim who remained half-paralyzed after his brain surgery, I have witnessed every inconvenient aspect of his life and the hard adjustments he and his family had to make. My relative, Peter, lives in a provincial city in northern China, where he worked as a patent attorney at his own agency. Before the accident, Peter loved to explore the city on his bike, he was also a photography enthusiast who would go on hiking trips with his photographer friends every other week to capture the beauty of the countryside. Nowadays, however, Peter could barely leave his apartment building in his wheelchair without the aid of his care-taker - thanks to three steps of stairs at the entrance of his apartment building. Even if he manages to go out, he is unable to visit many places due to accessibility problems.  

Peter is not the only wheelchair user whose life quality has significantly worsened simply because they sit in a wheelchair. Over the past eight years, sadly, Peter has gotten very used to being stared and yelled at for moving too slowly and blocking the way in public.  Inconsiderately designed spaces cause mobility troubles not only for people with disabilities, but also other able-bodied individuals when, for example, a wheelchair user has to block the entire staircase so that they can be lifted by two other people downstairs. In such kind of situations, the disabled are often the ones to be blamed as accessibility issues may be too subtle to be realized by the able bodied. What they do not see is that a problem like this can be easily solved if the space is equipped with a proper wheelchair lift.

I was shocked to realize how underdeveloped many countries and regions are when it comes to accessibility. Statistic data shows that about 40% of the world population today rely on a wheelchair or have to sit in a wheelchair at some point in their life. However, this relatively large percentage of our population is not reflected in current design disciplines in many ways.  The lack of empathy towards the disabled often causes the group to be neglected and disrespected. Ideally, a considerately designed space should ensure that wheelchair users can navigate themselves comfortably with as little aid from other individuals as possible. Unfortunately, even in some major cities of developed countries, wheelchair users and their families must make very great efforts to accomplish the smallest tasks every single day.

Accessibility issue in public spaces has raised the attention of many leading companies in the tech industry, many apps and software have been developed to improve the life of wheelchair users.  Google, for example, has recently added a new feature to their map system allowing users to contribute accessibility information of places they have visited. In fact, I have also made prototypes of an app that allows the user to customize their routine to avoid barriers such as stairs, steep hills and bumpy roads based on information contributed by other users. As I look at these apps that utilize crowdsourcing to provide information for wheelchair users, I started wondering how would able-bodied users be motivated to mark accessibility information that do not directly benefit their life? Will people contribute at all if they cannot even tolerate a clumsy wheelchair user accidentally blocking their way in real life?

Understanding and tolerance must come before problem solving. My final project of Major Studio 1 is an interactive choice driven narrative in which players play the role of a wheelchair user and complete a small task in a familiar environment setting – going to a destination in a shopping mall within 10 minutes’ walk from his/her hotel. As the player moves forward, they have to make decisions as they run into different kinds of obstacles – all of which are incredibly easy to overcome for able-bodied people. My goal for this project is to challenge the able-bodied users to understand the inconvenience and frustrations wheelchair users experience everyday, and therefore promote empathy towards this usually ignored minority group. The project is web-based and is told from a first person narrative. Multiple decisions must be made as the user goes through the narrative.

What I am most eagerly to demonstrate in my project is the gap between the reality and our naïve assumptions of wheelchair users’ life. There are some moments in the narrative when the user has no other choice but to click “wait” and “suck it up” buttons repetitively, as time overpasses, their anxious level and tiredness level increase as indicated by numbers and graphs on the side of each page. There are also moments in the narrative when the user must make concessions that can be otherwise spared if the place has better accessibility: taking a detour under the bright sunshine because they cannot get off the curb, having to dine at a bad restaurant because the good ones have stairs they cannot get up … etc. The key word of this narrative is discomfort and pressure, it is not designed for fun but to put the user into the wheelchair of others, to experience the frustrations they experience when all choices given are imperfect solutions to their problems and therefore come to realize how many times we able-bodied have underestimated the challenges they face and overestimated their ability to move in some challenging situations.

I was greatly inspired by the scavenger hunting game documented in the Smithsonian Museum report as part of the institution’s docent training program. At each training session, docents were required to complete a series of simple tasks such as taking the elevator, locating a telephone and call someone, using the water fountain with their eyes covered or sitting in a wheelchair. These challenges were designed to help docents to better understand the needs of disabled visitors, as well as to ensure the accessibility of museums facilities.

Another source that inspired my project was a short documentary as part of  a campaign by ChallengeAccess.com. In the video, TV present Kathryn, who is able-bodied, took the challenge and put herself in a wheelchair to tour around the city of Dublin. After some serious struggling moments, Kathryn said:

“I would never have noticed that bin there before, I’ve never have noticed that bicycle tied up to the pole… It’s almost like I get into a panic about what decisions to make. All I’m trying to do is to get from A to B. I shouldn’t be panicking about it, but that’s really what I felt. Do I swallow my pride and ask for help? Should that be an issue?”

Under Kathryn’s video, some viewers suggested that wheelchair users shouldn’t have made the decision of going there if they knew the city was not equipped with wheelchair friendly facilities. When I went out with Peter this summer, someone also approached us and told him that he should not take the subway because it’s a hustle for both him and other passengers. Accessibility is not just a problem at stake for the wheelchair community, but also for a great majority of our society - parents with baby strollers and senior citizens who need walking aid will all benefit greatly from accessible spaces.  I hope my project can help the non-disabled understand the need and frustrations of the disabled in a personal and intimate way, and therefore raise public awareness and empathy towards this group of people.

I feel alive because I have my faith in God.
