Never Tell, Chapter - a Malevolent AU
Arthur and Bella Lester are not in love. They came together as friends, to protect each other, to give one another the freedom to liveâand loveâas they pleased.
Having a child was supposed to be part of thatâquieting the rumors, providing a shield. But it wasnât one baby; it was two⊠and something is very wrong with their golden-eyed son.
Chapter Three: Bella is not well. The infection has set in, and she's feverish, high on morphine, and altogether feeling fucky.
Surely that means her visitor isn't real.
Right?
Warnings for mentions of historical homophobia and medical practices. Also a deeply irreverent Bella.
AO3
-----
Bella heard her father talking to the nurses before he was even in the room. He just never spoke quietly, that guy. Oozed authority, commanded respect, filled empty spaces with his presence.
This was gonna be a challenge. She was feverish; she was high as all hell (heaven?) on morphine; she was still in pain, and still feeling⊠fucky.
That was the word. Fucky. âEnglish studies can bite my ass,â she muttered to no one.
She was also feeling really torn, and not just down in good old Mount Pleasant.
On one hand, she really couldâve used another day without him. Sheâd have to pretend, to be the good wife, the good daughter, the good whatever, and she really didnât wanna do that.
But on the other, she was grateful he was around to show up.
The last year had been educational. When you rolled your eyes over your dadâs latest letter and complained about how much he wanted you to have a good education (which she obviously would not, now), it sort of sobered you up to realize no one would ever ask after your new fake husband.
He had no one to catch him if he fell. No one to care when he got hurt. No one to hold him when he cried. No one to comfort him, or encourage him. Or even fight with him over stupid shit that only family could fight over.
He did it all alone, and it wasnât really⊠right?
Arthur was a good guy. Sure, selfish sometimes (which made a fuck-ton of sense, given how lonely he was), but he should have people. It wasnât right he had no people.
She supposed she was his people, and she was good with that. He needed someone in his life who really understood him.
What was this, protectiveness? That was the wrong word, and all kinds of backwards, anyway, what with her being the dame and him not (though sheâd certainly tease him about that gender role swap any day).
She was drifting. Here came dad. Time to focus up.
âBella.â He sat in the chair Arthur had pulled forward.
She smiled as prettily as she could, the picture-perfect elderâs daughter, weary and faithful and hallowed by childbirth. âDad. You came.â
âOf course I came.â The concern on his face erased his usual vague disapproval. âBella⊠you look terrible.â
Whoopsie-daisy, turns out getting chopped open was not good prep for a beauty contest. âIâm afraid I canât help that.â
He touched her forehead. âAnd youâre feverish.â
âEh. Turns out I need that thing⊠I dunno, whatâs it called, blood?â
He looked very serious. âDid you forget the word, or are you being facetious?â
She sighed. âDadâŠâ
âIâm making sure. Blood loss can have an effect on the brain.â
Oi. âMy brain is fine. Iâm in a lot of pain. I lost blood. Iâm off my noggin on morphine. All of these things will get fixed over time. Hey⊠thanks for coming.â She did mean it. She knew he loved her. She knew he struggled with liking her, and struggled with trusting her, ever since heâd caught her and Deacon Smithâs daughter, years ago.
(To be perfectly fair, Bella could now admit that making out in the choir robe closet had not been the smartest choice.)
âWhat can I do for you?â Daniel said, his warm, large hand on hers. âAnything. Anything within my power. I can hire you help. I can help you move, get a better place, one suited for a family.â
Ooh, help! Someone who could cook and clean! Someone who could help with the babies and handle diaper duty! Someone who could⊠stare at them be not-married and figure it out. Fuck. âWeâre okay, dad. Thanks.â
âThere must be something.â Anxiety aged him, deepened the lines on his face. âAnything.â
Her heart did a little unpleasant ping. She knew she was all he had. Heâd never remarried. Never really gotten close to anyone. Sheâd realized in her first year of college how lonely she had been, living with himâand how lonely Daniel still was.
Bella put her hand on his. âIâm okay, dad. I have Arthur.â
Danielâs face said a whole world of opinion about that. âBellaâŠâ
She smiled. âWeâve got to figure it out eventually, right? You canât hold my hand forever.â
He was holding her hand now. âAs long as Iâm around, Iâm not going to let go.â
Her smile was real, if weary. âI know. Thanks, dad. I promise Iâll tell you what we need.â
âHow about the hospital bill?â
âNo, Iâm sure⊠dad, we budgeted for it.â
âI can do that much.â
âDad, itâs important. We really did plan for this. The answer is no.â
âHush.â He patted her hand. âFor rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Let me do this for you.â With that pleasantly-spoken damnation, he rose and headed off to talk to someone in accounting.
Bella exhaled hard, feeling ungrateful and distinctly witchcrafty. She loved her dad; she struggled to like him.
Sheâd liked him a lot more before her mom died, but that man was gone. âMaybe I should hook him up with a nurse, or something,â she said out of habit to her babies, hand going to her stomach, wincing. âHe just needs a little cuddling, right? Oh. Youâre gone.â They were. Sheâd gotten too used to a captive audience, especially when they couldnât answer back. Ah, those were the days.
She considered her room, her painful stomach, her ugly hospital gown. âOi, you. Be healed⊠now!â She waggled her fingers at her torso. âStupid body,â she said, closing her eyes. âNeeding blood. Pitiful.â
âYou need a little more than blood, darling,â said a woman in the doorway.
Bella looked up.
The stranger wore a manâs suitâsilk palazzo pants, oversized, and a velvet jacket over a light silk shell that both hid and teased whatever her body was beneath. Her black hair was short and slicked back, with a little curl on her forehead, and she walked with her hands in her pockets.
âSweet suffragette glory,â Bella blurted.
The woman laughed. âSuffragette, eh?â she said, stopping by her bed.
Bella stared. âWho else could get away with it? And damn. Who are you?â
âEmployee of a relative.â
Bella laughed. âMouthful. Also, I doubt that. Pretty sure Iâd like a relative who hired someone like you, and honey, I donât like any of them.â
The womanâs eyes sparkled. âYouâre also high on morphine.â
The tiny part of Bellaâs brain that understood this was not how to survive this world had gone blessedly quiet. âMy eyes work just fine, gorgeous. Whatâs your name?â
The womanâs lips twitched. âCareful. Youâll get yourself in trouble.â
âMaybe I want to get into trouble.â
The woman was no longer fighting her grin. âHe did say you were a handful.â
Bella wasnât done. âWho said? You gotta give me your name so I know what to moan.â
The woman laughed. âNever.â
Bella grinned. âSo your nameâs Never? How avante-garde! I can work with that. Bet youâll like it hummed in the curve of your neck.â
âDamn,â said the woman with a little shiver. âOkay, hold on, youâve distracted me.â The woman Bella called Never touched Bellaâs forehead, and thatâs when Bella realized this couldnât be happening. Some kind of shivery⊠sensation slid out from the womanâs fingers, which Bella had absolutely no definition for. âYeah,â said the woman Bella called Never. âFever. Hold still.â She lifted the sheets and began opening Bellaâs hospital gown ties.
Well, if sheâd gone straight into hallucinating, she might as well have a good time.âNot gonna buy me dinner first?â
âHold on, maâam.â Somehow, this woman lifted the bandages right off.
Bella couldnât see how she did it. It certainly shouldnât have come away like that, easy and clean and painless, andâ
Oh. Oh, she looked bad. The incision was almost purple, framed with dark, strangely sharp veins, so swollen that skin pressed through the thick, stained stitches like unbaked dough, making this wound more obscene than it already was.
Her heart pounded. âOh, fuck,â she whispered. âOh, fuck.â
âHe was right. Huh,â said Never. âYou werenât planning on more kids, were you?â
Bella stared at her. âLady, none of this is a thing I wanna repeat.â
âGood, because I have to put your uterus in null. I canât remove it, or even these idiots will be able to tell itâs gone missing.â
âYouâre⊠okay, I know youâre a dream, but mind telling me what my own head meant by that?â
âNo more periods, dollâand the lingering negative effects from carrying him inside you wonât kill you. Here we go.â And the woman put her hand right on the incision.
Bella jumped. âWhat are youââ She gasped.
It didnât hurt. Neverâs hand was cool. That delightful relief spread like it had on her forehead, and sank right into her like she was made of cotton. Discomfort and heat eased, soothing as it slid through her, and right before her eyes, the redness went down. It just faded, as if her body was eating it. The veins vanished like invisible ink in a spy novel; her skin calmed, flattened, leaving a neat, smooth incision held by textbook-perfect stitches.
She gawked.
Bellaâs toes curled. âUh⊠I am not in the business of imagining angels. So hey, Iâll hit on you, anyway. You got cold hands, and I can help with that.â
Never laughed as if surprised. âBold little thing.â
âItâs my dream. I get to flirt with the keenest doll Iâve ever seen. Better believe Iâm gonna be bold.â
âIâm almost done, all right?. Also, youâre not in great shape, hon.â
âSo sit on my face. Tongue works fine.â
Never just lost it, laughing, turning away, shaking her head. âMaâam!â
âMaâam! Iâm insulted.â
âYou are married.â
âWay to kill the mood.â Bellaâs eyes closed. It just felt⊠so much. Cooling. Easing. Sliding up her like oil under her skin, and she raised her arms over her head, stretching.
âEasy,â said Never. âYouâre not that healed.â
âWell, this isnât happening, anyway,â said Bella. âSo I figure we should go dancing. I know a place.â
âIf only.â Neverâs smile was wry. âThink heâd kill me, though. Hold on there, okay? He needs you.â
âWhoâs he? This ainât no sausage party, lady.â
âAll right, there we go.â Never replaced the bandages (how?), then touched her hand to Bellaâs forehead. âYou should be safe now. Careful what you say when you wake up, maâam.â
âIâm not a fucking mâŠâ
âBella?â
Bella opened her eyes and stared at her father.
Daniel looked so relieved. âYou have color in your cheeks again.â
But⊠what?
Nooooo, she thought, blearily. That dream had been going places. At least she hadnât woken up touching herself.
âIâve taken a hotel,â said Daniel. âIâll be here for a few days.â
âCan you afford to take that much time from work?â Bella said.
âI am taking it. Youâre my daughter. I know you donât understand yet, but you will, now that you have children of your own. There is nothing you wonât do for them.â
Bella suspected Iâm real broken and I donât think Iâm going to feel like that would be an upsetting answer. âThanks, dad.â
âIt frightened me so badly to see you so pale,â he said. âYou seem less feverish.â
That was odd. Bella put her hand on her belly and found no real pain; soreness, like a healing cut, but nothing like it had been. âHuh,â she whispered.
âWhat is it?â Danielâs heavy-jowled self tensed. âDo you need the nurse?â
âYes,â she said. âI think I need a bandage change.â
âIâll fetch someone.â He hurried, faster than sheâd seen him in years.
Bella slid her fingers along her stomach. Yeah; it felt better. Still no walk in the park, but notâŠÂ sick. Just healing.
It hadnât been real. Right?
Sure. Some incredibly gorgeous bird walked in, dressed to the nines, and did fucking magic. Yeah, of course it hadnât happened, but Bella wondered who sheâd based that dream on. Sheâd never met anyone like that. Not even during her brief escape to Harlem, her final year of high school, when theyâd taken a trip to the Museum of Natural History. Wow.
Bella got her good-girl smile back on by the time Daniel returned with three nurses, which was two more than expected, and that meant the next forty-five minutes were a pain in the ass. They kept checking charts and talking over her like she wasnât there and running little tests, and finally brought in a doctor.
They may have talked over her, but at least they were gentle. The doc was less gentle checking her incision, pressing into her, and she cried out.
âHm. An unexpected development, but pleasing,â he said like she was a loaf of bread, and marched away into the hall.
He didnât march far enough. She heard him. âA miraculous recovery,â he was saying. âThe infection has gone.â
The infection hasâŠ
So theyâd known she was that badly infected. Some instinct told her that was why they kept her on so much morphine; either her body would fight it off, or it wouldnât, and all they could do was keep her clean and comfortable.
Had she been close to dying?
Would they have let her, now that sheâd done her duty and reproduced?
She hadnât known. She was only twenty-one. She couldâve died.
âYouâre shivering,â said Daniel, holding her hand again.
âIâm a little spooked,â she said, too honest, and reeled it back. âI donât know how to be a parent.â
And to her absolute shock, Daniel, after hesitation, was honest, too. âNeither do I. But we⊠we manage. And our marvelous children find their way, in spite of us.â
She stared at him.
He stared back, briefly nakedâbut then it all got tucked away again like a handkerchief. âAs long as you raise them in the fear and admonition of the Lord.â
It didnât matter. It was a glimpse of the Daniel heâd been before her motherâs death had locked him away, and Bella had seen it. Maybe being a grandpa would help him. Thatâs be funny, she thought, if he ended up being the one saved by childbirth. âIâm gonna do my best, dad, and so is Arthur. I know you donât like him, but heâs a good man.â
Danielâs lips tightened, but then he let that go. âIâm so proud of you.â
She held Danielâs hand, because he was there, because he had lots of problems, but at least he cared if she was okay, and hoped Arthur was having fun.
#
Arthur was not having fun. At least he knew what heâd ask Daniel for whenever that guy came back. âAgain?â he cried, and could swear John looked smug as fuck. âHow? You just went! Where the fuck is it coming from?â
That was a smug look, or Arthur was straight.
He sighed and went to dispose of the mess and set water boiling again, dearly hoping they had enough clean cloths to get through the day.
Oh, yes, he knew exactly the help theyâd ask for: a fucking daily diaper service. âFor crying out loud,â he muttered, shirt wet all down the front.
Behind him, Faroe made a happy sound.
At least someone was having a good time.
ââ
Notes:
Note: I was raised by a Daniel (for good or ill), and I really understand Bellaâs messy relationship with her dad. No disrespect intended toward any faith or (poorly applied) scripture.
Also, Never is based on Louise Brooks. Yum.

THEY STILL LOVE LUCY
May 23, 1977
[The article below is reprinted verbatim. Photos and Footnotes have been added for editorial enhancement.]
There has already been some moaning at the bar that when Dinah Shore's blithe talk show moves to Channel 5 in July, it will be on 3:30 in the afternoon instead of 6:30 p.m. I have letters from viewers who lament "Now we'll never see it." I'm with them. It was nicely placed in the wake oi Cronkite, some easy chatter and gossip after the somber events of the day, like turning from the front page to the feature section of a newspaper. Moreover, Dinah does her interviewing very well, much less obtrusively than the assorted Mikes and Mervs of TV. She actually makes you believe she's more interested in the answer than the question.
Sometimes the answers are hard to come by. The other evening Lucille Ball was much more interested in clowning than answering serious questions about her comedy. Flanked by Jim Coburn and James Garner, Lucy was much more intent on giving a performance and it was great fun. Anyway, Lucy saves her serious answers about comedy these days for the seminar she's conducting at a professional school in Hollywood.Â
I asked the great redhead the other day what she told her students "Whatever they ask me," she said. "I just answer questions. If they're not interested enough to ask questions, the hell with 'em." That's basic to Lucille Ball. In her philosophy, you push forward, you ask, you try things. She used to tell her daughter Lucie: "Don't turn things down. No matter how lowly it seems at the time, you'll find you learn from everything you do it's worth it."Â
Years ago, Eddie Cantor told me that during the filming of Roman Scandals with the Goldwyn Girls, director Busby Berkeley worked out a sight gag wherein someone threw a glob of mud at Eddie who bent over at that moment and the mud sailed over him and caught some beautiful girl square in her pretty face. He asked for volunteers among the girls. All of them shrank back except one a redhead who stepped forward. "I knew," said Eddie, "that she was the one who would make it. Lucy Ball."Â
Too Much Lucy?Â
In case you are one of those who will miss Dinah! because you don't watch daytime TV, you may be unaware that Lucille Ball's fourth and last Lucy series. Here's Lucy, is now rerunning on CBS every morning at 9 on Channel 2. This is the six-year series in which her children grew up Lucie and Desi Arnaz Jr. with Gale Gordon as Uncle Harry.Â
There are six years of those shows and even spun off daily they should be around quite awhile. Not surprisingly, they're on opposite I Love Lucy which Channel 11 shows in the mornings at 9. Lucy shrugs at the schedule. At one time, there were Lucy shows on various channels seven times during a day "That bothered me," she said. "Every time you turned on the tap. you got me. There can be too much of anything."Â
To an historian of this windblown diversion, it's interesting two versions of the same basic Lucy character 20 years or so apart, still equally delighting audiences. Lucy, the character, must be the most durable creation of the television age, unsinkable, unstoppable, largely changeless. I have had the feeling at times that Lucille Ball feels Lucy rides her instead of vice versa. When she was doing Wildcat on Broadway, she said: "I thought they wanted something different, but they don't So in the show, I'm doing Lucy."Â
The other day the comedienne said: "I'm having a recurrence of that In the last couple of years, I've been doing specials that were different kinds of comedy dramas than the Lucy shows. I did a couple with Carney, I did that show with Gleason trying to play my age, trying to do something they would believe and buy. Well, they didn't buy it not really. What the people seemed to want was Lucy again. Now I'm faced with doing two more specials for next season, and I thought: 'Oh. God, not that again.' Then I decided the hell with anything different I'll do a Lucy show."Â
Old Friends on HandÂ
She'll be back in her own arena the three-camera TV technique created for her by Desi Arnaz; Madelyn Davis and Bob Carroll Jr., who wrote most of the Lucy shows over a quarter century, are doing the script; Gale Gordon will be on hand and perhaps Mary Wickes and Mary Jane Croft but not the kids: Desi is making a Robert Altman movie in Chicago; Lucie is on the summer musical circuit. The topper the show will be directed by Marc Daniels, who directed the first season ever of I Love Lucy. They'll film it in August for a probable November showing. (1)
There are other roles Lucille Ball itches to play a legless legend of a woman who has been a patron saint of the ghetto kids of Baltimore, for one. (2) She turns down constant requests to direct. (3) She likes teaching, working with kids. There's very little comedy on television she can watch. "I keep seeing rip-offs of my writers. They're doing our old scripts. Laverne & Shirley they're doing the shows Vivian Vance and I did years ago." (4)

Cecil Smith (author) began his Times career as a reporter and feature writer in 1947 and became an entertainment writer in 1953. He was the entertainment editor and a drama critic in the 1960s, and in 1969 he became the paper's television critic and a columnist for The Times' syndicate. Smith served as a captain in the Army Air Forces during World War II and as a pilot flew a B-24 Liberator in the South Pacific. After the war, he wrote radio plays and television scripts before getting involved in journalism.  He was related to Lucille Ball by marriage. Cecil's wife Cleo was Lucille's first cousin. He had a cameo (with other journalists) in âLucy Meets the Burtonsâ (HL S3;E1) in 1970. He died in 2009.Â
FOOTNOTES from the Future
(1) âLucy Calls the Presidentâ aired November 21, 1977 featuring Gale Gordon, Mary WIckes, Mary Jane Croft, and although she is not mentioned in the article due to her health issues, Vivian Vance. Desi Jr. was filming A Wedding, and Lucie was appearing as the lead in Annie Get Your Gun.Â
(2) This refers to âAuntâ Mary Dobkin, a little league baseball coach and childrenâs welfare advocate. The role eventually went to Jean Stapleton and the film was aired on âThe Hallmark Hall of Fameâ in 1979. Â
(3) In 1980, Lucille Ball signed with NBC, and finally gave in.  She directed a pilot for a half-hour sitcom called âBungle Abbey,â starring Gale Gordon.  The pilot was not picked up and that was her only solo directing credit, although she had co-directed a few episodes of her series.  Many directors would say that despite who got the credit, Lucy was also directing! In fact, that was nothing new. Â
Exactly 40 years earlier, to the day, the above item appeared in Erskine Johnsonâs âBehind The Make-Upâ syndicated column! Â
(4) It was not secret that âLaverne and Shirleyâ was heavily influenced by the antics of Lucy and Ethel. The showâs creator Garry Marshall was one of Lucille Ballâs writers at one time, and readily admitted how much he admired her.Â

Jim The Skin is one of Coventryâs longest serving skateboarders, and has been skateboarding for the entire time I have been alive. As co-founder of the cityâs skater owned shop Ride, he has been sponsored by Third Foot and Independent Trucks (even getting a double ad with his son Joe), and continues to skate a bowl better than people half his age. He has been influential for so many skateboarders in Coventry, running comps himself, or helping those who put events on in the city. His continued support of the work skaters do; from output like this very blog, to skater owned companies from the local area, and multiple skatepark improvement projects, makes him the godfather of modern skateboarding in Coventry. I interviewed him to get some more insight into the man whoâs real name isnât actually Jim.

As of 2020, you and your brother Darren have been running Ride for 21 years! When you first opened the shop, did you think the skateshop would still be going this far in?
Of course we did: we're down for life!! It does seem a bit unreal that it's been going that long, but we've had such good support from people. Having the bike side of the shop has made sure we had some income to pay the bills too.Â
How has skateboarding in Coventry changed in the 21 years the shop has been open?
I'm not sure it has changed that much -Â people are still shredding the town centre, and a few are more into transition skating the same as they always were. I guess the skate fashion has changed a fair bit: most people are on 8.25, 8.5 or even bigger boards now, and wearing slip-on shoes. When we started the shop, if you rode an 8" deck that was big, and most dudes were wearing silly baggy jeans and massive shoes too.

I think youâve been skateboarding longer than Iâve been alive! When did you first start and who got you into it?
I'm pretty sure I started somewhere between 8 and 10yrs old back in the seventies, so I've been skating for about 45 years. No one single person got me into it, skateboarding was just starting to happen: it was talked about a fair bit and you would see the odd thing on TV. I was always into going fast and doing silly shit on my bike so it looked very appealing. If any one person did help it would have been Steve Spain. When I was 13, I bumped into him at the brickworks in town, and we were still riding little plastic boards or anything we could get our hands on. He was there on this 10" wide thing that just looked amazing!! I said to him "I need one of those", and he took me back to his house and showed me a Surrey Skateboards price list. I went home, sold nearly everything I had over the next two weeks, and then went back to Steve's, and he ordered me a Dog town Jim Muir full setup⊠then it really started.
What was your first board?
My first board was a made up one, as it was for lots of people: just an old roller skate cut in half and screwed to some wood. After that I had a plastic polly prop rubbish board, even metal and fiberglass boards too, but I will probably say the Dogtown Jim Muir was my first "proper" board.
Your real name is Paul. Where did the name âJim The Skinâ come from? Â
Oh man this question haunts me! I was fully into Two-Tone: Cockney Rejects, Sham69 and other Oi music. I always had a shaved head, and used to go on all the scooter rallys, Northern soul all-nighters and that sort of thing. Think one of the first times I got in a mag, they must have asked what my name was, and Mon Barbour of SS20 said it was Jim The Skin and it stuck big time.

You are pretty much vert royalty in this country. Was vert something you always enjoyed skating or did you gravitate toward it later in your skating life?
Personally skateboarding was always about speed, long grinds, airs and definitely not pushing if you could help it. I always skated street because it was great fun, but if you could get to a good park with a pool or snake run or ramp, you could just charge. If you watch someone drop in Vert for the first time, they will tell you it was one of the biggest rushes they've ever had on a board just because the speed and the fear you experience, so once you conquer it and can do back to back tricks it rules!
How did Blockless Combat start?
Blockless Combat came around because there were no Vert comps, and hadn't been for a number of years. I just wanted to get everyone who skated Vert together so we could all go nuts! At the time block skating was massive, and it seemed like that was all a lot of skaters wanted to do. After you've grown up watching dudes go 10ft out of a ramps it just seemed a bit weak, hence the name.Â
I have said on multiple occasions that you have the best smith grinds in the west midlands. Who taught you to smith grind like that?
Haha, I laughed the first time I read that on here - "best smiths in the west⊠Midlands". When I first got front smiths, there were only two other people who could do them in the UK: Phil Burgoyne and Mark Abrook. I saw Mark do a few at the Banbury ramp and thought "I'm learning that bad boy!". It took a while but I got them in the end, and it became a bit of a trade mark.

How do you feel the landscape of new parks has improved over the time you have been skateboarding?
It's amazing how many parks are out there now! Don't get me wrong: there's still plenty of shit ones, but even some of them can still be fun. I think they are slowly getting better, the new one in Newquay is so good.Â
Whatâs the best park youâve ever skated?
That's a hard one to answer: don't think I could name just one, because I've been to so many all around the world and they all have their own thing that makes them rad. Some of the California parks are so good, but there's some amazing ones in Europe too. I guess it must be Creation as I go there most.
Youâve got some air miles under you: As a skateboarder who travels a fair bit, whatâs the funniest thing to happen to you on a skate trip?
The one funny thing that always stands out for me is when we were at Download Festival, and they had flown the big Vert soul bowl over for a comp. Christian Hosoi was over with Tony Alva to do demos. It got to the last few minutes of the comp, Slayer came on, and I was all ready to drop in and do some mad trick in my last run. I looked across to make sure it was clear and there was Sean Goff taking off his last item of clothing, so I had to let him go. He dropped in and did a full run completely naked. There were about 1500 people watching but I was just watching Hosoi's face!Â

As someone who stays pretty connected to the Cov scene, who are some of the best up and coming skateboarders in Coventry at the minute?
I don't go into town now, as I'm far too old to throw myself down stairs and stuff, but local dudes keep me up on who's ripping. I see a fair bit on Insta: obviously Lucas Healey, Pip, Duffman and Ben Keegan are still killing it but I've seen some rad stuff from Lewis Guest, Charlie Kerr and Jack Taylor too⊠I'm sure I've probably forgot a few but that's just my age!Â
What do you think will happen in the Coventry scene in the next 21 years?
World domination!! Hopefully the War Memorial Park Campaign will succeed in their efforts to help us get a new park in Coventry, and we will continue to have a really strong scene. There's been so many people getting back into skating lately and new people starting up, especially girls. I would like to think the future looks good.
Anyone you want to thank?
Thanks to everyone who has ever made the effort to come and see us in the shop, and to all the Coventry skaters and BMXers: you all rule! Thanks to my wife Gayle for letting me disappear all the time to skate, and my children Charlotte, Joe, Izzy and Finn. Thanks to Mr Sean Goff for helping us set Ride up in the first place, and for his continued support. Thanks to all the people I skate with on a regular basis.
Thanks to Gary Taylor, Alex Haywood and Joe Atkins for working at Ride for so many years. And thanks to my brother Darren for making it happen.
