The sound of popular rap is still skewing down south, as seen with Chamillionaire and Slim Thug. The dirty south sound will continue to be popular throughout the decade.

With Timbaland, The Neptunes, Danger Mouse, and Swizz Beatz, we're seeing a lot of established names in the world of music production popping up in the top 10. Timbaland was already a well-known producer in the 90's, especially his work with Missy Elliot, Aaliyah, Jay-Z, and other notable names in rap and R&B (cutting a lot of artists from this list; seriously he's very prolific). In the mid-2000's, Timbaland started working with more pop acts, like Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado, and The Pussycat Dolls (again, cutting a lot out), bringing more mainstream pop listeners to his sound. Like The Neptunes, Timbaland's production style is incredibly distinct and helped to shape what a lot of music in the 2000s sounded like.

This was also the year the second-generation iPod Nano was introduced. This is mostly notable to me because this was the year I upgraded to one from my Walkman, and I saw the music video for Gnarls Barkley's Crazy on that tiny screen and it blew my goddamn mind because I thought I was living in the future.

"Bad Day" is a pop song by Canadian singer-songwriter Daniel Powter from his self-titled second studio album (2005). It was written by Powter and produced by Jeff Dawson and Mitchell Froom. Powter and Dawson recorded the song in 2002, but were initially unable to find a record label to release it. The song was first used in a French Coca-Cola television advertisement in Christmas 2004 before its official release. Tom Whalley, Warner Bros. Records' chairman and CEO, offered Powter a contract after hearing a demo tape of it. This track ended up being released as the aforementioned album's lead single in Europe in early 2005.

The song was received with a generally mixed reception from critics. While some praised its lyrics for their "universal appeal", others felt they were too broad. Despite this, it was a commercial success. In 2005, the single charted in the top five in more than ten countries worldwide and became the most played song on European radio. After its European success, it was released in the United States where it topped the Billboard Hot 100, Pop 100, Adult Top 40, and Adult Contemporary charts. In 2006, it became the first song ever to sell two million digital copies in the United States, as well as being measured by Billboard as the most popular song of the year inside of the United States, and the first under its new system. After another million were sold, it was certified three-times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 2009. It was certified platinum in Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom, gold in Denmark and Germany, and also received a certification in France and Japan.

The accompanying music video for "Bad Day" was directed by Marc Webb and became the eighth most-watched music video on the Internet in 2006, reaching 9.8 million views one year after its release. The video depicts two downcast people sharing a similar routine until they meet each other at the end of the video. The song was used for advertisements and television programs, most prominently as American Idol's elimination song. Different shows and artists covered and parodied "Bad Day", including Saturday Night Live and Alvin and the Chipmunks. Powter has also performed the song on television shows including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and during his concert tours in North America and Europe. The song's success made it Powter's "anthem" and would be included on his later compilation albums B-Sides (2007) and Best of Me (2010).

cd collection update + a rant

i got these cds at a thrift store in another town that’s 15 or 20 minutes away. i was also gonna get cds by justin timberlake, mariah carey, and the verve. now something i didn’t know until today was that apparently people think it’s a good idea to change the disks or get rid of them, so i was told to check them when i got to the check out. there were no disks in the justin timberlake and verve cases, and there was a jessica simpson disk inside the mariah carey case. i know this may not seem like a big deal but this really pisses me off because 1. i was really excited to have them in my collection and 2. it’s awful to spend money on something i can’t even USE. i got my avril lavigne cd from that same thrift store and if there were no disk in that i’d be pretty outraged. (and yes there’s the correct disk in that) i like thrift store shopping because it’s cheap and they have some pretty good vibes but remember this for the future you guys

Crazy to me that Daniel Powter's "Free Loop" audio is trending in YT shorts. That song is over a decade old and I used to listen to that album of a fucking CD PLAYER. IN THIRD GRADE. WITH MY SHITTY HEADPHONES ARE YOU KIDDING ME.

I still have that same CD btw. I would listen to "Bad Day" and have my "music video moments" on the bus ride home lmao.
