El Partido de Fútbol
Mateo had asked Agustín in the morning if he would like to join him at the park later on. Mateo and some of his friends and classmates were going to have a friendly football match. Agustín agreed, although he would only be there to watch and support his friend's team, rather than play.
The sun was just past its highest point, but luckily it wasn't too hot. The two boys met and made their way to the park together; they were always together. The guys who were already there greeted them. Mateo changed into his football boots, and he was already wearing his Argentina national team jersey.
Time was getting on and everyone wanted to start the game already. Raúl spoke up, "Hey, guys. Enrique said he can't make it, something's come up."
A few guys groaned.
"Our team's going to be a man down then!" Luis complained. "One of you stay off, would you?"
"Nah, I'm not going anywhere." Mateo protested. His entire team agreed.
"Oh, come on. Now it's just unfair." Daniel huffed.
Mateo scanned the field for any extra players. His eyes landed on Agustín, who wasn't even paying attention to them, but was completely in his own head, staring at the surrounding trees that moved gently in the breeze.
Mateo whistled at him. "Hey!"
Agustín turned his face to him. "What?" He asked.
"Join their team. They're missing their midfielder." The curly haired boy was totally assuming he even knew what that meant.
"Are you sure?" The other replied.
"Yeah. Come on!"
Mateo heard someone behind him murmur, "We're finished..." and another go, "What does he know?" Luckily, Agustín was too far away to hear them.
He got up and brushed some grass off of his legs. Due to the unexpectedness of this situation, he wasn't wearing very flexible pants, and he didn't have any football boots. At least he had thought to put on his Chile jersey... even if he was the only one.
"Awesome. Thank you dude." Luis stepped towards him. "Alright! Let's start!"
They all got into their positions, Agustín taking Enrique's place on the midfield, and the kickoff began.
As it turns out, those who made the comments behind Mateo were wrong. The imaginary whistle blew and the game was onto a good start. Agustín may not have scored, but he made a really great attempt that was only stopped by Daniel's above-average saving skills. His passes were decent and he was precise with every one he made. He even had an assist, being the key to Luis' goal which held their team in the lead 2-1 for a while. They didn't win in the end, but Agustín's performance was quite shocking, even to Mateo. His tackles and defence were good too, even if he wasn't the absolute best player on either team.
After the game, it was like Agustín had just earned himself some popularity points, because most of the guys came to pat him on the back and compliment his playing. A few more skirmishes went on with fewer players all round as some just wanted to sit around and cool off or chat.
Mateo took a seat on the grass beside Agustín and placed a hand on his shoulder. "Since when have you been into football?" He had to ask.
Agustín smiled to himself and replied, "I've always been a casual follower, but I was way into it for a while when I was younger. That's how I learned how to play."
Mateo grinned, "You were awesome." He then removed his hand. "You really gave me... us... a challenge there."
"Thank you." Agustín averted his eyes and felt a little embarrassed. When he looked back at Mateo, the boy was gazing at him, his eyes creased a bit and his freckled cheeks pulled his lips into a sweet smile. Agustín smiled back, his face suddenly feeling more flushed than before. Then someone appeared behind him, interrupting the moment that felt like it went on way longer than it actually did, and stole Mateo's attention with a conversation about which fast food restaurant had the better Coca-Cola. What a useless question, Agustín thought, although he knew full well that he would be totally down for that discussion if Mateo had brought it up.

hii you asked for non english fantasy so id like to submit Cien años de soledad by Gabriel García Marquez and La casa de los espiritus by Isabel Allende. theyre magical realism but personally i think thats fantasy so idk. Cien años de soledad is definetly the more fantastic of the two though
hello! as I elaborated on way back in the day (on like day 2 of the blog, lmao), I do not generally consider magical realism to be fantasy as such. here’s what I said at the time:
———
> this will perhaps be a controversial stance, but as a rule I don’t consider magic(al) realism to be fantasy. a text like Alejo Carpentier’s El reino de este mundo / The Kingdom of This World — in conjunction with which Carpentier developed the idea of lo real maravilloso — is using apparently “fantastic” elements clearly within a “literary” and, ultimately, fundamentally realist framework: Carpentier’s contention, explored by later Boom writers, is that aspects of life in Latin America as experienced by Latin Americans cannot be adequately accounted for or expressed within the bounds of traditional European realism. [addition on 7/7/24: this is a fundamentally different theoretical and literary project than genre fantasy or even from gothic or gothic-adjacent texts.]
> this opens a much bigger can of worms re the social construction of “reality” in and by Western literary realism — Daniel Heath Justice, for example, has critiqued the reduction of work by Indigenous writers to the realm of “mere” allegory or simply to unreality. I’m not satisfied with Justice’s solution to the problem (the concept of “wonderworks”), because I think it cedes too much ground to Western literary realism’s claim to a monopoly on the real, but his underlying point stands. I have increasingly found that “magic(al) realism” is used, in popular contexts, less as a serious engagement with the theoretical problems that the authors of the Boom were grappling with and more as
a way to bracket off as “unreal” work by Indigenous, African, and other authors who are writing from within a different baseline realism than Western literary realism presupposes, without seriously engaging with the ways this work interrogates the hegemonic constructed “real” that Western states use to justify, for example, the destruction of Indigenous sacred sites for resource extraction purposes;
alternately, a kind of “fantasy lite” that wants to stay within the realm of “literary fiction” rather than risk being tarred with the genre label “fantasy”; or
a label for things that are simply fantasy, not engaged with any of the theoretical problems that define magic(al) realism as a genre, but are either liminal fantasy or more realism-adjacent than secondary-world fantasy or urban fantasy.
> things in categories 1 and 2 I would generally exclude from the category of fantasy (if you don’t want to be here, I don’t want you here either!); things in category 3 I would probably consider fantasy (and not consider magic(al) realism).
> my second and third questions / points about the gothic are also relevant here, and help clarify some fringe cases. Gabriel García Márquez and Alejo Carpentier were clearly working in the realm of literary fiction and not the “popular” literature that has come to be grouped under the label “fantasy”; conversely, Jorge Luis Borges was heavily influenced by anglophone pulp writers, including H.P. Lovecraft — I am comfortable identifying texts like “Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius” as “fantasy” (for all that they predate the genre).
———
while some of Allende’s other work is more definitively fantasy (e.g., the Memorias del águila y del jaguar trilogy, which is currently queued), if La casa de los espíritus is less fantastic than Cien años de soledad I’m probably inclined to exclude it.
ALL OF THAT SAID: I admit to feeling a bit more ambivalent now, having since accepted Kafka’s Die Verwandlung / The Metamorphosis (as well as Haïlji’s The Republic of Užupis, which in some ways I think resembles the Boom writers’ magical realism). my four guiding questions for fringe cases between fantasy and realism are:
does the text contain an unequivocally fantastic element (something that, as Samuel Delany puts it, “could not happen” — some sign of magic or the supernatural)?
was the text composed as fantasy or as literary fiction?
for fiction published in the English-speaking world or other areas where there exists a separate fantasy market, is the text published and marketed as fantasy or as literary fiction?
if someone came to me and said they liked (e.g.) N.K. Jemisin, Patricia McKillip, and Charles de Lint, do I feel I could recommend this book to them and expect them to enjoy it on the basis of some similarity to these other authors?
my feeling is that most Boom magical realism is a maybe on question 1 (accounting for the fact that part of the point of the genre is to interrogate the social construction of “reality”) and a solid no on questions 2-4. but if you or anyone else wants to make a strong case for either Cien años de soledad or La casa de los espíritus, I am open to being convinced otherwise!

Okay, this snippet is canon, because I wanna see Alicia as an auntie! And we oficially have the first member of the 4th Gen of the family ^^ this one:
Tumblr media
(He's 10 but looks like he's older :3)
And now up to the snippet!
All the family was having a good time inside grandpa and grandma's house, just passing the holidays with their usual happiness and chaotic existance. Although, Nicolás was a bit nervous and even Alejandro noticed it, so everyone was confused and a bit worried about him. No one said anything because the eldest Marchant sibling never spoke about his problems if he was pressured, so they gave him his space.
When midnight arrived they all sat around the tree as usual, with all the classics songs blasting on the speakers, chatting with a cup of wine. Once they wished each other a merry christmas, with Elías and Juan David pretended to gag when Alicia and Alejandro kissed, everyone gave away the presents. Mostly were little things, trinkets if you want, but all of it thought in base of their personality.
"Hey, Licia, Alejo" Nicolás called with a shy smile "my gift is for you both, it's kind of a surprise"
"Aww, thanks Nico" Alicia said as they recived the box
"Thanks hermano! Now let's open it" Alejandro murmured, absolutely curious
They opened the box in the middle of an expectant silence, and inside of there were two bracelets, both with a little crow charm. But the real surprise was the card inside as well, it had just a question written on it attached to a little photo of Nicolás and a kid. 'Wanna be my godparents?'
"...Wait" they said in unison, sharing looks before looking at the older one "YOU'LL BE A FATHER?!"
"Surprise-!" Nicolás exclaimed, just to be tackled in a hug by Camila, and the younger twins (Juan David's little sisters), María and Gabriela
"We're having grandchildren?" Andrea muttered, looking at Jack with surprise and then smiling widely "we are having grandchildren!"
"AHAHAHAHA! FUCK YOU DEATH!" Julio screamed and laughed maniacally, pointing to the nocturne sky through the window "I LIVED TO SEE MY GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN!"
"Julio! Enough!" Rosa scolded him, making him sit down again before looking at Nicolás "congrats papito! I'm so happy for you"
"Another one! Another one! Another one!" Elías, August and Juan David were chanting while their parents and uncle were looking at them with worry
"They are as weird as you" José murmured towards Gabriel and Isabel
Everyone was happy and celebrating the new member to come, all while Nicolás was all red in the face, but smiling happily. Then Alicia and Alejandro took him apart to talk, hearing the relieved sigh from the elder brother.
"So? Are you adopting?" Alicia asked with a side smile
"Yes, he's a little boy called Daniel" Nicolás admitted with a soft smile "I met him maybe two years ago, and last year I started all the process to adopt him. To be honest, last month they gave me the yes! So he'll be my son, at mid january if everything goes right"
"I'm an auntie!" Alicia exclaimed, really excited with a giggle
"And I'll be an uncle" Alejandro murmured with a chuckle, then looking at his brother-in-law "do you really want us to be his godparents?"
"Absolutely, I trust you! Also I'm relieved that my son has two spec ops officers as godparents in case something happens" Nicolas joked with a big smile "and we both know that Alicia's boys will treat my boy as one of them"
"That's true, they'll be like that..."
And like that they learned that Daniel Marchant, the first grandchild on the family, is a sweet, intelligent, determined and patient boy. They also knew that Nicolás had been telling Daniel about all of them, and the kid was so admired and happy to have such a big family, even already calling them uncles, aunties and so more. When he gave them the date when his son would arrive home, everyone just started to prepare everything to recieve him.
And when Alicia called her boys to tell them the news, all the soldiers cheered loudly, making Alicia silence the call with a chuckle. At the same time she considered tell Tiala, Kanoa and Aly, so she organized a call with them for a little later before going to celebrate again. Like that the time passed, and in the middle of january, Daniel arrived home with Nicolás and all the family fled to La Haya to meet the new member.
"HE'S ONE OF US!" the grandpa exclaimed, lifting the kid as if he was Simba while Daniel giggled, with a huge smile "HEY WORLD! BEHOLD MY GREAT-GRANDBABY!"
"Dad! Put my grandkid down!" Andrea shouted, running towards him
"...They're really happy, huh?" Camila murmured with a big smile
"Oh, definitely" August said with a chuckle "hey, you think he'll be another soldier or he stays as civilian?"
"I bet for civilian" Gabriela said, raising her hand
"That's something only his dad can tell" Elías reminded them, then looking at his cousin "what do you think, Nico?"
"...Whatever he chooses, I'll be proud of him" Nicolás said with a little smile "but knowing him, I wouldn't be surprised if he became a soldier"
"So he'll be a new member of the club" María joked "but he still need to wait that I join first!"
"Mom, put my nephew back on the floor!" Alicia argued, watching Andrea doing the same as her father "and you bicker grandpa? You're just like him!"
"Got him!" Alejandro exclaimed, carrying the kid as a potato sack when he got him back "let's go, enano"
"Yay! Thanks for the help, uncle Alejo" Daniel said, smiling happily while Alejandro also smiled
