The voices in my Wish Rewrite

I haven’t talked much about it, but in my Wish rewrite some characters would be recasted. I wanted to make this post just to show which actors I’d replace… And it’s pretty much everyone except Magnifico, cause ya know, Chris Pine is Magnifico, and Magnifico is Chris Pine, it’s just how it is.

So let’s get this started!

Asha- Denée Benton

Im absolutely OBSESSED with this woman’s voice, she sounds like an angel and carries so much personality in her performance, she sounds pure, youthful, hopeful but also strong, everything I imagine Asha as. THIS is what I imagine the 100th anniversary Disney princess sounding like. Not that I didn’t like Ariana DeBose’s singing tho, but I just love Denee Benton more, and hey, it’s my rewrite, so I get to imagine Asha’s voice how I please. Also I can totally see Asha and Aster singing this song.

Aster- Jordan Fisher

Oooooh this man, I love him so much. His voice has the perfect energy for Aster, sounding youthful and melodic like a prince, it had to be a literally other worldly voice, and I think Jordan’s voice is PRETTY DANG other worldly, like, this example I found on Spotify doesn’t even do him justice, go listen to his other singing chops on YouTube.

If you look up Jordan Fisher you’ll see the guy is DEEPLY connected with Disney in his career, from singing the song “Happily Ever After” 6 years ago, which is the theme song for the Magic Kingdom, to now being the main singer of 4-town in the movie Turning Red. And of course this one time he made a cover of “You’re Welcome”, the guy just lives and breaths Disney so WHY NOT have him as a wishing star? It just makes sense. But besides working with Disney he also has experience in a musicals such as Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, Sweeney Todd and more recently he became the new Orpheus in Hadestown… And by god I need a good quality audio of him singing “Wait For Me” more than I need air because that song fits Aster’s character SO WELL.

Magnifico- Chris Pine

Yeah no surprises here, you can’t have Magnifico without Chris Pine… But HIS SINGING VOICE IN THIS SONG THOUGH??? ITS SO GOOD!!! I listened to “Any Moment” ONCE and now I constantly go back to listen to it over and over and imagine young Magnus and Amaya meeting in the woods. I still haven’t posted about Amaya’s backstory BECAUSE IM TOO LAZY TO FINISH THE DRAFT I HAVE EXPLAINING IT- But let me just say her hesitating to start a relationship with him is VERY accurate to her character. And Magnus being like “May I kiss you” out of nowhere because he: 1- Sees himself as irresistible so he thinks she’d fall for him with just that and 2- he had 0 social skills before he met Amaya.

And then there’s the line “Life is often so unpleasant, you must know that as a peasant” ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! This is LITERALLY something my Magnifico would say, I’m so freakin lucky!

My point is, my rewrite’s Magnifico sounds like THIS when he sings, with a deep, smooth and honeyed voice that makes you want to trust him… Take that high pitched voice Chris Pine did in “This Is The Thanks I Get” and throw it out the window. Disney wasted the man’s talent. I’m so mad.

Amaya- Emily Blunt

Do you guys see my vision? Do I even have to say anything? Like really, go watch a scene of the Mary Poppins remake, any scene with her at all, that woman has a voice that DEMANDS respect, while also being motherly, it’s practically perfect in every way. I’m using “Open Up Your Eyes” here as an example though because… Well, it fits her backstory… Ya know, the backstory I’m stalling to talk about 👉👈… But it also just simply fits her personality in general!

And no disrespect for her voice in the movie, Angelique Cabral… BUT ITS EMILY BLUNT AS AN EVIL QUEEN!!! Come ooooon! It’s just meant to be!!!

Also side note, since we’re talking about Queen Amable, THIS design that came from an deleted scene is how I’ve imagined her the whole time:

Like, I could not STAND her hairstyle in the movie, it simply didn’t fit my vision for her character, see, Amaya is sophisticated but she’s also… Practical and likes to feel comfortable, hence why in my rewrite her dress has no sleeves, she values her own comfort more than conforming to the social norms… AND THAT HAIR LOOKING LIKE HEADPHONES WITH THAT CROWN THAT MADE HER FOREHEAD LOOK LIKE A SQUARE DROVE ME NUTS!

So yeah, this is our Queen Amable, voiced by Emily Blunt, with a British accent, in all her glory, we’re moving on.

Valentino- Gregory Mann

This is just a bonus mention, since Valentino doesn’t even sing in my rewrite, he just speaks in like 3 scenes… And you guys have only seen one of them so far. But either way, let it be known he sounds like Gregory Mann, because Gregory Mann sounds adorable. That is all.

Overall: Overall I'd say the interview was okay for the most part? The author of the interview seemed like they had a slight crush on him, which was funny lol.... But it wasn't horrible. His photoshoot was really GOOD... He was airbrushed to the Gods lol, and they had him looking like a handsome Clark Kent lol. As far as how to get into writing smut...

I would say just do it!! It's scary, it really is, but you can do it! There's some amount of learning curve to it, as there is with any skill--writing included--but the only way to figure out where you are on the learning curve is to do it. If you hate it so much, you don't have to publish it anywhere. No one has to see it. That's the beauty. It's for you first and foremost.

I started writing smut after an ex-girlfriend (girlfriend at the time, lol) introduced me to the world of fandom and then to fanfiction. (The longer story is basically that I wrote her some erotic poetry about the sex we had been having for part of her birthday gift, and she was like, this is good. Really good. Are you aware that people Do This? Publicly? For others to enjoy? I was not aware, lmao.) I didn't get into it right, right away, I did a ton of reading of fanfiction and smut first, but eventually, I just started to do it. I honestly don't remember why exactly I started other than I've always loved writing, and I started to become obsessed with Marvel more and more, thanks to being in a fandom, so... why not write for fandom? At the time, I had no idea what I was doing, and looking back, compared to the shit that I write now, you can tell 😅 but that's okay! It's okay if I think the stuff I wrote at first is shit and find embarrassment in those stories now. You know why? Because it means I'm better at it now. I had to start somewhere to get somewhere. Also, hey, there are people out there who've read those first fanfictions I wrote and who appreciate that work exactly for what it is. Many times, I have considered going back and orphaning early works of mine or re-writing/re-editing them. But I haven't. Partly (truthfully) because that takes a lot of time (especially re-working early fanfics), but mostly because I have learned to appreciate in other writers, whether they create fanfiction or otherwise, seeing them evolve. Their voice may mature or become "better" or more developed, but I can read their voice in their words throughout, and I think that's beautiful. I would love to see that in my works eventually. I would love to be that for someone else.

What has made my writing better has not only been continuing to learn how to better communicate what I want to convey to readers through my words but also how to ebolish those cringe barriers. What do I want to write? Filthy, nasty shit [affectionate]. Okay, well, pull no punches. Put in the obscene details. Paint a picture that would make a prude squirm in their seat and have to close their browser. I, like most people in the US, grew up with some amount of puritanical views on sex and sexuality. I am still unlearning those. I feel I had a head start, being kinky because I have to accept those parts of my own sexuality. When I first began writing smut, there were many more unconscious filters. Those filters, I found in my own writing, to be the most cringy. That and bad grammar. But, hey, English is fucked. Write how you wanna write. People don't speak with perfect grammer. Language is a sandbox, play.

The Story You Want To See: Princess Zelda’s Narrative Arc in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Spoilers for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

A piece about reviewer interpretations of Zelda's role in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, as analysed by someone who has played neither BOTW or TOTK. (1,219 words)

Unlike many gamers, what I (as a bystander with no interest in any of the Zelda games besides maybe Majora’s Mask) was most curious about with regard to Tears of the Kingdom was how it would treat Princess Zelda in the wake of Breath of the Wild.

You see, although I haven’t played Breath of the Wild, I do know that quite a few people praised Zelda’s portrayal in that game. They argued that while still a princess requiring Link’s rescuing, Zelda being made the focus of the main story (as doled out through flashbacks) and having been locked up in Hyrule Castle with Calamity Ganon by her own choice gave a subversive twist to that game. As summed up by Critical Distance’s Chris Lawrence in a Twitter thread on June 17th, 2021: “…In BOTW, Link may be the playable character, but Zelda is the protagonist—the flashbacks deal principally with her character development, not Link’s. […] The entirety of BOTW […] is about Zelda’s struggle to achieve autonomy.”

I wondered: if Breath of the Wild subverted the typical hero-and-princess story and put the evil to rest, then how would Tears of the Kingdom, which comes after this destruction of the status quo, treat this newly-liberated princess, a damsel no longer in distress?

Fans said that the obvious next step was for Nintendo to give Zelda a more active role in the sequel; as a playable character or deuteragonist, perhaps, but either way, she needed to be able to enjoy the freedom won at the end of the previous game. To return to Chris Lawrence’s thread: “If Zelda is once again damselled and needs to be rescued by Link, the sequel isn’t reflecting the growth of Zelda’s character over the previous game. In other words, the sequel is failing to justify itself as a narrative continuation of the first game.”

So I skimmed through the many glowing reviews of Tears of the Kingdom, hoping to find out what had become of Zelda. At that point, I noticed something odd: reviewers seemed to have strongly conflicting interpretations of Zelda’s part in the narrative.

Many reviews were positive on the story, and some specifically cited Zelda’s role in it as a highlight. Gamereactor’s David Caballero apparently declared that “it is literally the legend of Zelda this time around” (quoted in TOTK review by Gamereactor’s Alex Hopley), and Gamespot’s Steve Watts concurs: “But more than the Sages or even Link, this story truly belongs to Zelda”. The Gamer’s Jade King expanded on this in her review, stating that “[although] Zelda isn’t playable here, […] all the discoverable memories scattered across the open world focus on her arc”, and therefore “she is still given room to shine and comes across as inquisitively capable in recruiting new allies and setting the stage for Link to vanquish evil once and for all”. Checkpoint Gaming’s Luke Mitchell likewise observes that “while [Zelda] isn’t present for your adventuring, the main questline gives you the opportunity to unlock memories, uncovering more about Zelda and her connection to Hyrule”.

But a handful of other reviewers had a very different perspective. Two specifically noted that the premise of the game involves saving Zelda: Eurogamer’s Edwin Evans-Thirlwell wrote that “Zelda […] is still fundamentally a damsel in need of rescuing”, while IGN’s Tom Marks flippantly remarked that the game is “about stopping some evil jerk (welcome back, Ganondorf) and saving Princess Zelda as usual” while pronouncing the story to be “so dang cool”. The Verge’s Ash Parrish and Press Start’s James Berich were rather more critical, stating that “Zelda, though teased as playing a more active role, has been, once again, utterly sidelined — this time in a particularly egregious way”, and “Zelda’s characterisation definitely feels like a step back from her appearance in Breath of the Wild”, respectively.

So what actually happened in the game? After looking up some spoilers on Screenrant, I’m still not too sure myself. It seems that much of the main story sees Link searching for Zelda after getting separated at the start, during the course of which the player unlocks flashbacks showing what befell the princess. These flashbacks, in turn, explain that Zelda got transported into the past, and due to various reasons ended up sacrificing herself in order to ensure that Link is able to defeat the big bad in the present day. This sacrifice involves her turning into a mindless dragon, and she is able to turn back into a human only after being healed by Link (and friends) at the end.

In short:

Zelda is absent from a large portion of the game

Zelda does have a story arc in which she demonstrates agency… by sacrificing herself to ensure that Link can play his heroic role

Without Link’s help, Zelda would be dead (and/or stuck as a dragon with no sense of self)

Hmm. I don’t know, but this sounds very much like Breath of the Wild to me.

But why the praise? Why such a gap in interpretation among the critics? The answer, I think, lies in Ed Smith’s excellent article on Resident Evil 4 Remake, “And Then There Are Things We Don't Remake”. In it, he observes that “commercial entertainment has gotten extremely good at ensuring that your beliefs, whatever they are, are somehow reflected back to you”, taking Ashley from Resident Evil 4 Remake as an example:

“If you’re a feminist, Ashley talks more, does more, is kind of semi appreciably less sexualised than before. It won’t work on everyone, but enough people will be impressed by this ostensible progress as compared to 2005 that Resident Evil 4 Remake more or less passes the look test. If you like things how they were, and you’re worried about how videogames increasingly seem politicised or driven by a liberal agenda, Ashley still doesn’t do that much, and you still get to order her around, and there’s a few decent close-ups of her and Ada.”

Put another way, female characters in modern, big-budget games are frequently written to appeal to all demographics, even conflicting ones. Progressives will latch onto the hints of nuance to the writing of a female character or her gameplay design, while anti-progressives are appeased because they see that nothing has changed in the overall scheme of things.

Tears of the Kingdom is good because all those flashbacks are focused on Zelda, and in them we see a capable, clever young woman make a very hard choice for the sake of her people. Tears of the Kingdom is bad because ultimately Zelda isn’t present for most of the game and needs to be saved by Link.

Alternatively: Tears of the Kingdom’s handling of Zelda isn’t great, but hey, did we really expect any better of Nintendo? The trouble is that the games most kaleidoscopic in their representation are likely the biggest names – and as Smith notes, “there’s only so much indignation you can have about this, because it’s obviously how it’s going to be, and always going to be—they’re always going to make games this way, the big games, because it’s an industry”.

His illustration of this defeatist mindset is spot-on, but I wish it wasn’t. It doesn’t need to be the case. Let’s keep looking to that horizon, rather than only sticking to familiar plains.

actors that I see everywhere and recognize and what I think about them

Ana De Armas: I was debating on putting her on my "actors who were born to act and what I think about them" post because I absolutely think so after watching her performances, but I'm sticking with my original experience of recognizing her in Ghosted (with Chris Evans). I first saw her in No Time to Die (James Bond), and thought she was totally badass and funny. Then she started to gain traction for her Marilyn Monroe movie: Blonde. That was when I started watching clips of Knives Out (Also with Chris Evans) and the Night Clerk. I'm also impressed at her knack for action movies... like- dang you go girl. On top of that, Ana is such a funny person, especially in interviews with her costars, and I love her general attitude towards life and her acting career. She's definitely a trailblazer in her field and I can't wait to see what she does next.

Domhnall Gleeson: Ever since i was young, I've been seeing this man EVERYWHERE, and I mean everywhere. I'm talking Harry Potter, Peter Rabbit, Star Wars, and Goodbye, Christopher Robin. It really makes me appreciate the work that all of these actors, whether mega famous or not, put into these movies. I just find it really funny to see him play a goofy farm owner's husband in one movie, and then watch him be the evil right hand man to Kylo Ren in another. What a range!

Felicity Jones: Ah, another Star Wars actor. Felicity normally plays more serious characters. I've seen her in Rogue One, The Aeronauts and The Theory of Everything (with Eddie Redmayne AHHH), The Amazing Spiderman 2, and Inferno (the third movie to one of my favorite movie trilogies that I'll explain another day). She's an incredibly versatile actress with so much to offer. I remember watching Inferno, seeing her, and thinking: Huh, she looks terribly familiar... and I was right.

Future Plans! (January Update)

There were a few things I forgot to mention in my last journal about future plans. I also wanted to give some updates! COMMISSIONS (UPDATE) If money is tight, I’ll probably be opening for commissions at least once every other month in 2023, if not more. We’ll see! There are a lot of personal projects I want to work on, and I prefer to keep personal projects a priority if I can! I’ll post journals with as much lead time as I can regarding when I’m expecting commissions to open! Presently, I’m looking at how my paychecks and taxes look this year. UPLOADING GIFT ART, ART TRADES, & COMMISSIONED ART!! When I upload gift art and art trades, I’ll be sure to title and tag them properly, and on the sites that support folders, I put them in their own folder! I am honestly super danged thrilled that others are having fun with my characters! I’m super excited to share what’s been done so far!  I did briefly think about making another account, but nah! That’s too much work to maintain! REFERENCE SHEETS Regarding reference sheets, I have 3 female characters I want to do reference sheets for (Aura my puma / cougar / mountain lion, Diana my maned wolf, and Graphene Doodles, my Rule 63 gender-swapped version of my unicorn Graphite Doodles), as well as 7 male characters (Graphite Doodles my unicorn, Chris the mouse, Evan the rabbit, Kyle my red fox, Gabriel the squirrel, Trevor Dawson my wolf, and Bud Blaze, my MLP earth pony)! This means I have a total of more reference sheets I want to do (for now). I imagine this will take me well into 2023, given that it takes about two weeks per reference sheet. I’m hoping for May at the latest. TRADES & GIFT ART After my current round of reference sheets, I’ll open for some trades and gift art! I’m thinking I’ll spend at most a month on trades. I’m absolutely giddy, honestly! I’ve wanted to do trades for decades; I’ve had a lot of various internal and external struggles I’ve fought with and overcome over the years! EXPRESSION PROJECT Something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time is a better version of the 25 Expression Challenge. I’ve done a few challenges long ago, and I know I’ve done one recently-ish with Princess Celestia and Princess Luna. BUT! I haven’t done one when I’ve had this much self-esteem, self-compassion, and self-efficacy! I feel like I could push myself well beyond what I’ve done before! I’m making a 100 Expression Challenge! You all are in for a treat! TREMMIE & EVAN SERIES After the 100 Expression Challenge, I want to dive into a passion project I’ve been wanting to start for 15 YEARS. I’m going to have a Tremmie and Evan sex romp series/comic! It’s going to be everything from sweet, silly, to hot and heavy and gooey! I want to give myself a fun challenge, and I think y’all would love it as much as I do! SOFT SHADING I’m also planning on dinking around with soft shading in 2023! I think I could make my art really pop with some quality shading and lighting! POSSIBLY SELLING SOME OLD CHARACTERS AS ADOPTABLES I am thinking of selling some characters as adoptables! There are 11 characters of mine that I'm never going to draw again, and I’m not going to combine them. I was thinking of making a ref sheet for each and selling the character that way! (The characters are: Callisto the skadger (skunk badger (spoken for), Sheila the Ringtail, Helen the spotted skunk, Heather the hedgevixen, Mindy the other, Shazzy the felox (feline/fox), Brook the swift fox, Yasmine the red fox, Jessica/Jessie the arctic fox, Ian the whitetail buck, Liam the jackal, and Nemo the snow leopard). I was also thinking I’d probably due ¾ front view and ¼ back view, and 1 fully clothed view, instead of the 5 views I’m doing for my own characters. FUTURE REFERENCE SHEETS (MID-LATE 2023) I realized that there are also characters I wish to keep! There are 8 characters in addition to the above that I want to do ref sheets for. Some are my wife Mistletoe's characters! She's not involved with the fandom anymore, but we fully support each other's interests! She sees how happy my characters make me and still likes furry and MLP art! (The characters are: Betsy, the arctic wolf (may change her name), Celeste the genet, Holly Graham, the red Scottish vixen, Josh the striped skunk, Marissa the mouse, Miriam the mouse (thinking of a new design!), Mistletoe the snowshoe hare, Rose Bunny the arctic hare). PONIES I still love My Little Pony a whole danged lot! I’m absolutely expecting to draw more ponies from here until the end of time, honestly! I’ve been into ponies (1984) way longer than furry fandom (1996); I still love both fandoms a whole lot! I want to do art ranging from general audiences to smutty!  HUMANS Re-uploading my old art on my Tremaine account back in 2018 made me realize how much I missed drawing humans! There are many artists whose humans inspire me, and I want to practice drawing them! Once I feel I’ve got some decent progress made I’ll share some art! LEARNING NEW STUFF And, of course, I’m hoping to keep learning new things all the time! Goodness knows I’ve already learned so much since I started back on this path in May! Self-esteem, self-compassion, and self-efficacy have helped me a great deal in learning to take constructive criticism better, as well as learning to self-criticize with the aim of improving my art! I feel like as long as I make “having fun” a priority, everything else is so much easier! DISCORD SERVER (MAYBE, EVENTUALLY, BUT NOT RIGHT NOW) I’m second-guessing whether I want to make a Discord server. I’m still trying to figure out how to balance my time. I’m of the mind to put this project on the back shelf for now; maybe when I’ve grown my following for a few years I’ll come back to it. Like, right now, I’ll get the very occasional ping in Discord, but it’s mostly quiet. If it makes more sense to be able to communicate with a lot of folks at once sometime in the future I’ll probably look into it more. STREAMING! I am also planning on streaming eventually. My real concern is being able to split my attention between drawing and a chat! I think I’ll start after I’m done with my initial round of character reference sheets! I do want to watch more streams, too, but I still have the same problem! I pretty much ignore the stream to focus on my own art. I feel like this is a thing I’ll need to jump into and play by ear, so to say!
