Best Marvel Comics to Binge Read on Marvel Unlimited

With an enormous swath of the world involved in varying degrees of social distancing, many of us suddenly find ourselves with a lot of time on our hands. Never fear! There are more options for streaming comics than ever before, and that means we have access to more of comics history, more hidden gems, and more epochal runs than ever before. But the variety of options to read can be daunting. That’s why we’ve put together a recommendation list of some of our favorite comics binge reads to help you through quarantine. Marvel Unlimited has been around for more than a decade. It runs about six months behind print release of books, so it’s a good way to stay sorta-current with the stories you love. But the real draw is the back catalog: with 25,000 issues in its library, you’ve got access to some of the most important and most entertaining runs of superhero books of all time. From Lee and Kirby creating the modern superhero comic in the pages of Fantastic Four through Chris Claremont and John Byrne revolutionizing the X-Men, and through several Wars (Secret, Infinity, or Civil), everything is here.

You don’t need us to tell you to read some of these stories. You know “The Dark Phoenix Saga,” Kraven’s Last Hunt, “Demon in a Bottle,” or Jonathan Hickman’s behemoth are all important and good. And some of them, Marvel’s even giving you for free. We’re going to skip over some of the obvious ones and point you towards hidden gems, the harder to find stories that fill in the edges of the Marvel Universe and make it such a rich, lush experience. We are also looking for monster runs that will keep you occupied – you can read six issues in one sitting with no danger of nearing the end. Some of these might take you an entire round of social distancing to finish.

A quick note about the reading guides: We’ll list out the issue numbers for most of these. Many of them may have their own separate entry under Marvel Unlimited’s reading lists – those are helpful, but these are definitive. One of them, we’re going to refer you to the events – to find those, you can go to “Browse”, then scroll over to “Comic Events.” And for one of these, we’re linking to the inordinately helpful Comic Book Herald. They’re a great site for comic reading orders in general, and have helped me through several other binge reads before.

Walt Simonson’s Thor

Thor (1966) #337-360, Balder the Brave (1985) #1, Thor #361-362, Balder the Brave #2-4, Thor #363-382

This probably shouldn’t be on the list. It is in the conversation for the greatest runs on any superhero comic ever. But if you’ve never read it, you’re truly missing out.

If you watched Thor: Ragnarok and loved how it looked or any of its story, chances are you are going to adore this, the run that Ragnarok borrowed so much from. Walter Simonson took the Asgard realized by Jack Kirby, the mythological realm pumped full of color and Kirby dots, and turned everything way up to create the most iconic Thor run of all time. Simonson started the run on art before handing off to Sal Buscema, and Simonson and Buscema are two of the artists I could recognize by style the soonest. Everything is HUGE.

It’s paced immaculately, with whatever story is in the foreground holding your complete attention, but always with something drip drip dripping in the background that will eventually crescendo. This run made so many characters wonderful, but Loki, Volstagg, and Beta Ray Bill are highlights. And have I mentioned the art? It’s incredible, and doesn’t suffer one bit when Buscema takes over. This is my favorite run on any comic of all time. You absolutely must read it.

X-Men: the Messiah Cycle

Messiah CompleX, Messiah War, and X-Men: Second Coming

The hottest take you’re going to find on the internet today is this: the Messiah Cycle is the best era of X-Men comics. It has everything I want from the X-Men line: books have distinct voices and missions, but contribute to the overarching direction of the line. There IS an overarching direction to the line. New characters are brought to the front, and new ideas are injected into the line.

X-Men: The Animated Series – The Essential Episodes

You get all of that from the Messiah era. Messiah CompleX picks up with Cerebro identifying the first mutant birth in years; Messiah War has the members of the Mutants with Claws and Swords era X-Force heading to the future to check up on that baby; Second Coming is when she returns to present day. Each one has a different tone; Messiah CompleX and Second Coming bring together every book in the line to tell their stories, but also let each creative team keep telling their stories and end up being the best-handled X-crossovers since Inferno. And Second Coming is the best straight action X-book I think I’ve ever read.

If you like these crossovers, you should absolutely check out other books from this era. Utopia X, a crossover between Uncanny X-Men and Dark Avengers, is amazing, as is Duane Swierczynski and Ariel Olivetti’s Cable and Zeb Wells’ New Mutants.

Mark Gruenwald’s Captain America

Captain America (1968) #307-422, 424-443

Full confession: this is my current binge read. After years of hearing about how wonderful Gruenwald’s Cap was, I finally decided to jump in and within three issues, I was texting people to scream at them for not forcing me to read it sooner. For starters, the goddamn Serpent Society turns into a union. In fact, the Serpent Society’s union meeting is the most fun I’ve had reading a comic scene in a while, and the fact that it is based on a real meeting of comic book creators from 1978 makes it both more accurate sounding and HILARIOUS (I think Constrictor is Gil Kane, when you read it).

But the real appeal is how much movie Cap is based on this era. Gruenwald’s Steve Rogers is a really nice guy. Everybody loves him, everyone respects him, and there’s not a lick of condescension or mean spiritedness about anything he does, from sparring with Black Knight to taking on a gang of criminal jugglers with Hawkeye to trying to help joke villains like Rocket Racer. He’s also extremely competent, and Gruenwald and artist Paul Neary do an incredible job of showing this, as Cap breaks into the West Coast Avengers’ headquarters while trying to figure out, through his jet lagged brain, what day it is. It only gets bigger and more traditionally superhero as it goes on, with artistic contributions from the likes of Kieron Dwyer, Ron Lim, and others.

You’ll see even more of this run’s influence in Marvel’s The Falcon and The Winter Soldier TV series on Disney+, as it introduces key characters who we’ll see on screen there, so get reading, and pay attention!

Runaways

Runaways (2017) #1-current

Rainbow Rowell’s current run as writer on Runaways captures the Marvel spirit better than just about any comic coming out right now. It’s a masterful mix of superheroics, joyful immersion in Marvel continuity, and soapy teenage drama. A lot of people are doing good work at Marvel right now, but nobody is hitting these notes as consistently well as this crew.

This book is remarkably accessible for something so steeped in its own history. If you’re new to comics, or if you’re here because of the Hulu show, you’ll find plenty to love. But if you liked the original series from Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona, you’re going to be shocked at how much this feels like if that same book had never ended. Even though the characters have grown and changed substantially, their voices are distinct and seamless. This is one of my favorite Marvel comics being published right now, and once you’re all caught up, make sure you add it to your pull list at your shop.

Darth Vader

Remember that moment in Rogue One where Vader just kicked the shit out of everyone without looking like he was trying? And how everyone squealed in delight at old, force of nature, badass villain Darth Vader being back? If you were reading the comics at the time, that moment had already happened for you a full 18 months before the movie came out, in Darth Vader #6.

Star Wars: Darth Vader’s Best Moments from the Marvel Comics

This entire series is Vader killing everything he can. It’s like watching a space tornado. What’s especially surprising, though, is how Kieron Gillen manages to sneak some important character development into the book. While Vader slices through Sith intrigue and Rebel scum and the entire royal line of a mining planet and a bunch of others, we’re also learning about why he’s the way he is. This series takes place between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, so some of the lines that get filled in add to the rest of the OT as well. There have been several very good Star Wars comics since Marvel got the license back, but this run on Darth Vader is the best.

Ultimate Spider-Man

Ultimate Spider-Man saved Marvel Comics. Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley didn’t do it with flashy variants or crossovers. They did it by telling good, pure, core Spidey stories.

It’s hard to separate Peter’s origin from Ultimate Spider-Man from Peter’s origin in the 616. The Ultimate origin is so definitive and iconic in how it fills in the spaces between the necessary beats. Bagley’s art especially – even now, thinking about this series that I haven’t read in forever, I can still pull up Peter jumping over Norman’s car, or MJ’s face when she and Peter have “the talk.”

Spider-Man 3 Story Is “Absolutely Insane” Says Tom Holland

For the absolute best, and purest this book can be, just read the first 38 issues, ending with the first Venom arc, but the book stays solid for its entire run. Bendis’ work with both Peter Parker and Miles Morales is my favorite work of his career, especially when Miles joins the cape world, but nothing will ever match just how fantastic these first few arcs of Ultimate Spider-Man are.

The Annihilation Era

Annihilation, Annihilation: Conquest, War of Kings, Realm of Kings, and The Thanos Imperative

You will be hard pressed to find better comic book space opera than the Abnett/Lanning era of Marvel’s cosmic characters. Marvel’s cosmic line was an afterthought when these first started coming out. By the end, it was a widely beloved corner of the Marvel Universe that was popular enough to be mostly transcribed whole by the movies.

Guardians of the Galaxy Reading Order

The nice thing about this era of the cosmic line is how neatly the main books move from event to event. Annihilation tells the story of a cataclysm that befalls the universe, and how the remaining heroes – Nova, Star Lord, Silver Surfer, Drax, Gamora, Ronan the Accuser, and Super-Skrull, among others – fight a war to survive. Rich Rider gets his own solo Nova comic from there, and it leads right into Annihilation: Conquest, about the catastrophe that follows in Annihilation’s wake. It also sees the formation of the Guardians of the Galaxy as we know them and launches their book, before tying both comics together in War of Kings where the Shi’ar and Kree empires collide. Realm of Kings is the aftermath of that war (and has one of my favorite Shi’ar Imperial Guard stories of all time), and that leads directly into the conflict that mostly closes out the era, The Thanos Imperative. This is a great introduction and immersion in Marvel’s cosmic universe, and will have you hooked by the halfway point of the first crossover.

Black Panther

Black Panther (1998) #1-22, Deadpool (1997) #44, Black Panther #23-62

There are certainly better parts to this run, but there is a scene where Namor, T’Challa, Doctor Doom, and Magneto stand around an apartment outside of the United Nations shouting at each other about diplomacy, and to this day I still have not found a comic book more specifically designed for my interests than this one.

Priest is one of the sharpest minds ever to write comics. He’s so good at misdirection and storytelling – he will overwhelm you with style and flash, and you won’t even notice the subtle clues he’s dropping, or the way themes and characters weave together to show key parts of the story. This run on Black Panther is probably the definitive one for the character, and contributed a ton to the movie version, but there’s so much more depth (and humor!) that Priest puts into the Marvel Universe that it’s very worth reading.

Each individually writes really good comics, but the two of them working together almost always put something special out. Incredible Hercules spun out of World War Hulk and came out better than it had any business being.

Hercules exists in a unique place. Pak and Van Lente used him as a gateway to the mythology of the Marvel Universe – the Greek pantheon, but also the Norse pantheon, Japanese gods, Inuit gods, even Skrull deities. And several of these aren’t exclusive to Marvel, so you get a very clear and obvious statement about some of the differences between the Big 2 universes, some clever in-jokes, and the requisite moving story about godhood. This all comes with wonderful characterization, clever plotting and a great sense of humor.

Nextwave: Agents of H.a.T.E.

Read Nextwave after you’ve read everything else, not because it’s a good capstone to your Marvel experience, but because it’s aggressively anti-continuity, and (lovingly) EXTREMELY disrespectful of the rest of the Marvel Universe. It’s also one of the funniest comics Marvel’s ever put out.

This whole story is Warren Ellis brutalizing superheroes. Boom Boom from X-Force, Monica Rambeau (sometimes Captain Marvel, sometimes Photon), Machine Man, monster hunter Elsa Bloodstone, and Captain &#($$&*#!@ (or The Captain) are brought together by the Highest Anti-Terrorism Effort (H.A.T.E.) to fight Unusual Weapons of Mass Destruction. It’s aggressive nonsense, less anti-continuity than acontinuitous which isn’t a word but also fits the spirit of the book – characters make no sense even from issue to issue, and only serve the plot, but that nonsense later serves the plot. And it is an absolute tour de force from Stuart Immonen, who draws every type of comedy you can imagine – slapstick, absurdity, somehow sarcasm, puns – with incredible layouts and storytelling. This is not a good Marvel comic, but it is an incredible comic book that you’re going to love.

I’ve never asked this but, how come you don’t enjoy Ultimate Spider-Man? Personally I thought it was Bendis at his best.

It’s a few things.

I do not like how people treat it as interchangeable with616 continuity or pretend what applies to one applies to the other. Like peoplewere pointing to the Kitty Pryde annual as a good example of what you could doif Spider-Man wasn’t married, ignoring how 616 and Ult Peter are not the samebecause they’ve been through different experiences but also diverge in certainpersonality traits too, or at least the emphasis upon them. 616 Peter has moreserious guilt attacks and feels anxiety more acutely than Ultimate Peter, buthis humour is also subtly different.

Frankly Bendis’Spider-Man humour dialogue had nothing on the best of the 616 writersespecially Stan. This applies even more to other characters. Ultimate Mary Janeis a fine and dandy character unto herself but her backstory and personality isseriously different as is the way she and Peter connect to one another, even ifthe end result of her role is similar. Norman and Venom and Doc Ock similar areat best riffing upon aspects of their 616 selves and are frankly nowhere nearas meaty.

For all the praise Bendis got for ‘fixing’ Eddie Brock andVenom by not making him an alien, setting him up before he goes evil and givinghim a different motivation to hate Peter, when he actually BECOMES Venom he’sjust a gnarling growling monster for the most part whereas 616 Venom if nothingelse had a personality. I could go on all day aboutthe changes Bendis made and how it made the characters lesser than what theywere before.

And you could sit there and say that hey it’s an AU so whyis that a problem.

Well the problem is it was never intended as an AU whereshit is different for the sake of it in the first place.

It was intended as a modern retelling of the Spider-Manmythology using the benefit of hindsight and filtering everything through thelens of him being in high school.

But almost immediately it began changing stuff for the sakeof changing stuff thus invalidating that point.

More frustrating though is that fans and Marvel treat the seriesas though it actually was the former as opposed to just being basically Bendis’personal AU spin on everything and talked it up as these amazing Spider-Manstories when they were literally just remakes of the older stuff.

If you want to see a modern retelling of the Spider-Manmythology using the benefit of hindsight and filtering everything through thelens of him being in high school the Spec cartoon is an example of that andwhilst it took cues from Ultimate fundamentally that was Lee/Ditko justupdated.

But my two biggest gripes come from Bendis messing withimportant foundational stuff to Spider-Man like making Nick Fury a huge dealand making Richard Parker a really important aspect of the series.

Peter’s parents being spies is dumb, no lie. But it can kindof work on account of them being dead, him not remembering them, them beingessentially irrelevant to him and them not being his parents in the importantsense of raising him anyway.

Uncle Ben is Peter’s Dad end of story.

In Ultimate though Bendis made Nick Fury a super spy head ofthis super spy organization an important character who can have a major shapingimpact upon Spider-Man’s life and arguably is a dark father figure. He also inthe Venom arc, Carnage arc, the Clone Saga and a few other places hyped upRichard’s (but noticeably not Mary’s) importance. Ultimate Peter is aSpider-Man who’s defined in an important way by the legacy of his biologicalfather, not Uncle Ben. To the point where Richard was the guy who originallysaid gr8 pwr=gr8 resp and Uncle Ben just passes it on to Peter.

That is...no. You do NOT do that *glares at Webb movies*.

Spider-Man is defined by Uncle Ben first and foremost andshould be relatively down to Earth and normal, so spies or super spies shouldn’tfactor in in a huge way at all.

But Bendis didn’t do that and then he’s called the bestSpider-Man writer of the 21st century and USM the best Spider-Manseries of the 21st century. He didn’t do any of that whilst alsocreating less developed and nuanced versions of all the other characters.

I mean my God how can your take on Spider-Man be definitivewhen Jameson is barely in it and Bendis’ self-insert OC Kenny Kong gets morepanel time than Flash Thompson, the character who is literally on the firstpage of Amazing Fantasy #15.

He even went a step further and made Aunt May Peter’sbiological aunt because IIRC she was Mary’s sister, which is both overly neatimo and more poignantly takes away from the positive family message of theoriginal story. That blood doesn’t make family because 616 Aunt May had 0 bloodties to Peter but she adored him as her son.

And then on top of all of that the decompression.

I.Effing. HATE. Decompression.

I loathe it. I despise it. I would kill it if I could.

Decompression was talked up as being this thing that had tohappen because comics were more cinematic but the truth is they weren’t, BENDISHIMSELF was the person who made them more cinematic because of the impact he hadand no one seemed to sit back and ask if it was even a good idea.

Decompression stories allegedly allow the stories more roomto breath and flow organically whilst also allowing writers to go deeper.

But in practice in USM and the majority of 2000s-2010s booksusing decompression aren’t like that.

They just take what would’ve been 1-2 issues worth of plotin the 1990s or 1980s and artificially stretch it out to pad for a trade.Basically a trade is the equivalent of what an issue or 2 of a 1980s comicwould’ve been.

Meaning you are spending more money for less content perissue or way more money for essentially the same content (not helped in USM’scase by it being mostly remixes of the old stuff anyway).

It’s not even more layered or nuanced or has deeper themesand stuff, it doesn’t even use the extra space for more action. Kraven’s LastHunt does all that but more stuff actually happens in that story than youraverage arc of USM or most 21st century decompressed arcs.

Issue to issue it actually destroys the flow of a storybecause whilst a 1980s multi parter would’ve had it’s own beginning middle andend per issue, that isn’t the case for USM and similar such decompressedstories.

If a decompressed arc was a 2 hour movie then issue 1 of 6would basically be giving you the first 20 minutes of a movie and asking you toremember it for 2-4 weeks until the next 20 minutes and on and on for the restof the arc. That is a horrible way to experience a story but that’s the point,because it wasn’t written to be consumed that way, it was written for you tobuy the trade i.e. the complete movie and consume the whole story in one hit.

Plus I heavily suspect decompression was employed as a wayfor the companies to justify doing less work per year. If every story is 6 partsthen a monthly series only needs to come up with 2 stories per year not at most12.

Like compare and contrast just how much characterdevelopment and raw plot occurs between USM #1-100 and say the first 100 issuesof Claremont’s X-Men. Or Spider-Girl #1-100. The differences are truly stark.

The ultimate (no pun intended) proof in the pudding for meis Bendis’ Daredevil run vs Frank Miller’s.

Bendis DD run is acclaimed, beloved considered one of thebest runs for the character ever. Miller’s run however despite being farshorter and not employing decompression is still regarded as THE best, with plots from it forming the basis ofevery Daredevil adaptation since then, including the Netflix show. So Bendisusing decompression and having much more time and issues to work his magicstill wound up doing something not AS good not AS nuanced or fleshed out asMiller did with a different style and less time and issues.

How can that be possible if decompression allowes you to doall this stuff? Because decompression sucks shit is how and because in comicsits less about the space you have but how you use it.

How to make Sammy Lawrence’s Mask

This is…..pretty long so I’m putting it under the cut.

Okay before I start I want to mention I made this mask in mind that I’m going to be wearing it at an anime convention. So I wanted to make it durable so if anyone bumped into me my mask would be fine, I can see out of it and get around, people will be able to see all angles of it, and comfortable enough that I don’t mind wearing it for hours. So to accomplish that my mask is pretty thick. You can’t really tell from the cosplay pictures but it’s about an inch thick which gives me room for my nose and gives more of the illusion that the mouth is punched out of the Bendy mask. There are so many different methods to make flat masks but my way is really cheap to make so works for me.

Okay first thing we have to make is our what I’m going to call template. This template we’re going to use to make all the layers for the mask and help with the painting so you want this to be as perfect as it can be. I kind of thought of a few ways to make the template mostly because my first way didn’t work out so had to think of some new methods.

First method: You can draw it.

If you have the art skill you can draw on a piece of paper Bendy’s face. When you do this it’s easier to just draw all of Bendy now: face, eyes, where it separates from black and white, all of it.

As I did this I realized boy I can’t draw Bendy’s proportions at all. The eyes and mouth are so off and I can’t make these two eyes the same for the life of me. But hey if you can draw this might work for you.

Second Method: You can print out a picture of Bendy.

This is what I ended up doing. From trying to draw my template and holding it up to my face I realized that I need this mask to be about 12 inches wide and at that point when you keep the rest of proportions the mask will be tall enough that you won’t see the top of your head. And so I used that. Me not having any Photoshop or computer art powers asked my friend to print it out for me. So I don’t have too many details on how he did that but he said he ended up using ms paint and made it the correct size by trial and error. His only note was “Under print settings you have to print at 2 pages x 2 pages. That was the only way I was able to get the mask big enough at the time”. So once you have that printed out tape it together then cut out the shape of Bendy, eyes, and whatever part of the mouth you want out. So your paper printout will look like this:

Now that we have our template we’re going to cut out all our layers. For the front piece you’re going to trace our template:

Then you’ll cut out the mask shape, eyes, and mouth.

For the middle pieces you are going to cut out all that plus make a nose. To figure out where your nose is going to be take one of your cutout pieces and hold it to your face and figure out how you’re going to wear the mask. At least for me holding the mask with my face in the center I can’t see out of either eye well so I actually wear my mask closer to the left eye (Bendy’s/Sammy’s right). I figured I’d rather see better out of one eye than not really see out of either, plus the other eye we’re going to paint over anyways because it has a white mark so you won’t be able to well out of it anyways.

Once you are holding your mask in the place you want to wear it I just took a pencil and roughly drew around my nose where it was touching the mask.

Now you’re going to cut out that nose hole as well. When you cut out any more pieces you’ll want to trace that nose hole as well so that it’s always in the same place.

For the last layer you’ll cut out Bendy’s shape, the eyes, and your nose hole but NOT the mouth. I did this so then you don’t actually see my mouth on the other side. So in the end you’ll have these pieces.

I had two middle pieces to get the thickness I wanted so I had room for my nose but it all depends on how thick your cardboard is too so you can have as few or many middle pieces as you want.

When you put them all on top of of each other front will look like…

And the back will look like….

As you can see my nose hole is not centered because I’m trying to see out of that one eye better.

Now we’re going to glue the cardboard together and put on our headband. In the last flat mask I made I did the headband last and just stabbed it through the mask which worked for Zacharie but since you can see from this Sammy model that @spectrumtonic posted:http://bit.ly/2q0Ss2t

You can see that the headband just magically comes out from out of the side so I figured I’d try that. So first glue all the layers of the cardboard together besides the last one that doesn’t have the mouth cut out. Take a piece of white elastic that you can buy well at Joann’s for sure but probably most craft of fabric stores. Put it where you’re going to wear and tape it there.

From there you can slide on the back piece like so:

and try on your mask and see how it fits. Keep adjusting how much elastic you want until your mask fits well on your head. From there you can cut off the extra elastic remove the tape (while keeping your elastic ends where they are) and hot glue your elastic to your mask. On a side note I’m not sure while doing the rest I stretch the elastic too much or my mask just got heavier but now my elastic is a little long. So for a temporary fix I just stapled it together for it’s smaller but for you guys while making your mask you might want to take the elastic size that fits well then cut it a little smaller than that and then glue it on. But once the elastic is glued on you can glue on the last cardboard layer and now you can wear your mask like this:

And our headband it magically coming out of the side like Sammys!

Now we’re going to paper mache this together so it looks like one thing and not four pieces of cardboard. If you don’t know how to do that it’s super easy. Just take some flour and and water and mix it together until you have a paste substance and just make sure you mix it well enough that you don’t have clumps of flour in it. Before starting to prevent your headband from getting covered in paper mache and later paint I wrapped it in saran wrap.

You’ll take pieces of any paper (but I had some white thin paper and I prefer that over newspaper since we’ll need to paint parts white later so makes it easier to paint later if the paper is already white). You’ll take that paper and make strips of it and get it wet with the paste then put it on the mask. It usually works better if you put on the strips in the same direction.

You’ll want to cover the entire mask and make sure you get the insides of the mouth and eyes as well. I just did one layer of strips but the more you do the thicker and stronger the mask you’ll make (but also heavier).

For the top layer of paper mache I wanted to make is smoother for it doesn’t look like a bunch of strips of paper. To do this you’ll take your template and trace it again on a big piece of paper. Cut out Bendy’s face you just traced but cut it out about an inch bigger all around. With the extra inch cut slits in the paper to where you traced. You’ll also cut out the eye into slits and the mouth as well. So it will kinda look like this:

Didn’t have the mouth traced with this picture yet. Instead of putting the paper mache mix on the paper just put it on the front of the paper and then put your cut out on top and smooth it out. You’ll take all the slits you made and fold it over the side of the mask, eyes, and mouth.

You can see in the picture above I had already done that with the left eye so that’s what it will look like. You’ll want to make it as smooth as possible since whatever lumps you leave will kinda be there forever on the mask. I also traced out the mouth again, cut it out, and paper mached that inside the mouth so the inside the mouth would be flat and smooth as well. I also cut out a few long narrow strips of paper and put that around the sides of the mask so that didn’t look like a bunch of cut out paper but more smooth and solid around the side.

Once you’re done leave it somewhere to dry. When it is dry we can finally paint! First just do a coat of white paint on the front back and on all sides.

I used acrylic paint but I’m not sure if that matters or not. Now we have to paint the black parts and again with no art skills I couldn’t just paint Bendy’s shape and mouth freehand so we’re going to use our handy dandy template again. So take your template that already has the black and white perfectly on it and put it over the mask. As I kept it there I lifted up parts of the template and made little marks and of where the shape of the black was and the mouth.

As you can see from the picture above I connected all the marks I made for the black part of the face but didn’t yet for the mouth. Connect all your marks and paint black where black needs to be painted.

Make sure to paint the inside of the eyes black and the inside of the mouth. Once you’re done turn it over and paint it again on the back since people can see the back of your head and mask.

This you don’t have to make as nice since people probably won’t be focusing or taking pictures of the back of your head but Sammy has the pattern on both sides of the mask so why shouldn’t we.

Now that we have the normal painting done let’s finally put in our eyes. The way I see out of masks like this is I use a black fabric that’s pretty thin and put a few layers of it on. I’m sorry I have no clue what fabric I used I literally was just at a fabric store putting up different black fabrics up to my face with different layers figuring out if I could see out of it or not. You can use different stuff since I had fabric from the last mask I made but only enough from one eye and couldn’t find the same fabric when I went to the store so the left and right eye use different fabric. So I don’t think it really matters what you get as long as you can see out of it.

Once you decide you got the fabric you want just cut out a square of it that will fit over the eye and hot glue it on the back.

Sorry pictures slightly out of order of tutorial because I realized I didn’t have a picture of the fabric so just took that now. Then you’ll keep gluing squares of fabric on the eyes until you’re at a point that you can see through it still but it’s not easy to see yourself on the other side. For me one eye has three layers and one has four because they were different fabrics and one was thinner than the other.

Now we can finish the mask and mess it up. For this grab a picture of Sammy (NOTE: the character model link above is actually mirrored from the game so don’t use that for your reference!) Here’s a screenshot from the game for you.

Then just stare at Sammy forever and kinda put white where there’s white and black where there’s black. You can have more fun and mess around with this more since as long as the colors are in generally the right place and messy it’ll look fine.

Some parts like the straighter marks I used a paint brush to do and a lot of the smeared up parts I just dipped my finger in the paint and just smeared it around. Try not to have a ton of paint on your finger when you do that because in my case I feel like those parts didn’t look as good but you can mess around with it and you can always experiment with the back first. You can put paint on the eye fabric but wherever you do so you WON’T be able to see out of it. Lucky for me where Sammy has a white mark on his eye is also the eye I don’t see out of so doesn’t affect me.Since this mask is more 3D I smeared white around on the top, sides, and back because I figured why would only the front be messed up.

And that’s about it now you have Sammy’s mask. I do have a few small problems with the mask that hopefully all of you can avoid.

1. If I move my head too fast my mask likes to rotate side to side like if you were looking at the Small World clock at Disneyland. I don’t mind that too much because it’s kinda creepy but it might be avoidable if I put where the headband is glued on higher on the mask. Not 100% sure if that would fix that but I think it would.

2. The mask is more dependent on my nose for support since as I said before my headband became looser or the mask got heavier. So it likes to sit on the top of my nose between my eyes which is fine but after a while it hurts the top of my nose. So my current plans is to go find some object like clay or…something soft….to put there so then it doesn’t hurt my nose anymore.

3. This might be unavoidable but since this is a big mask you can see the fabric for the eye you don’t look out of from the back. Not super important but had an idea that if you put the fabric on the layer before the back like I did with the headband then people won’t see a fabric square. The only problem with that is that you’d have to paper mache it together a little differently and would have to be really careful not to get paper mache on that fabric. So might not be worth the effort.

And that’s about it. That whole long giant explanation. Sorry this is so long but I wanted to put why and how I did certain things for maybe if you didn’t want certain things you could change that part to your needs. And I wanted you guys to have a better step by step than just “now paint the mask” I wanted you to know how I did that even with no art skills and how to make it messy looking etc. If anything wasn’t clear or you have any question feel free to pm or message me anytime you want.
