Nyssa travelled with the wrong Time Lord.
Nyssa and Damonsipharel my beloveds
And yes I ship Nyssa x Damon.
After all, Damon actually treats Nyssa like an adult!
He's much less boisterous than Tegan and Adric, and much more secure of himself than Luvic.
And, my mom already knew Neil Daglish from his role as Heath in "Tales of the Unexpected"
That's a nice one I guess
Tumblr media
He looks like this now (from his twitter https://twitter.com/NeilDaglish ... i THINK its him)
Even with tattoos and a shaved head+eyebrows still more handsome than Robin Soans or Colin Baker!
He should come back. Nyssa and Damon should be reunited!

So Trakenites work on sheep lesbianism got it
Meanwhile tremas/Kassia existed bc of the master and acted like rivals
And Seron/Katura is a straight couple but it works on sheep lesbianism too bc seron is babygirl. Rip 🪦 John Woodnutt you would have loved coming out 💜🤎
Tremas/Lucina propably didn’t work on sheep lesbianism as we never saw it but Nyssa/Luvic would have. Because Luvic is a femboi ofc.
But Nysric doesn’t work on sheep lesbianism, yet Tyssa does.
Nyssa/Karuna I guess, but at least Nyssa/Chela, and even Nyssa/Damon a bit also work on sheep lesbianism, but Nyssa/Inga does not.
So it’s all over the place, and in some of those cases it might just be about the dominant partner (tremas, Adric, and kind of Damon and inga)
Yes I’m a multishipper

My alternate DR self, Kazran
This is my other self, the one I've been working on shifting into for the past year. She is a Time Lord and Theta's soul mate, along with the TARDIS, Damon.
I was even more of an outcast on Gallifrey because I wasn't as quick intellectually, but my psychic abilities were through the roof. Theta is basically the brains, while I am the heart. He's got the rage of the storm, and I am the calm before it.
My Whovian DR is vastly divergent from the 'original canon' that we all know. Since there are infinite realities, there are infinite possibilities.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My DR S/O Theta
Theta is not known as the Doctor, but he could be. He definitely has the potential to become the Doctor. His real name is actually Theta Sigma in this reality.
Theta's personality is a mixture of various DT character's. The main ones being The Doctor (both Ten and Fourteen), as well as Crowley and Kilgrave. Maybe also a bit of Peter Vincent (for the alternative wardrobe style). Also, a lot of my Theta (this Theta, the one I rp as). So, he's... quite dark.

Anonymous asked: How do you think Damon would react to your other characters if he met them?
Tumblr media
asdfghjkl; I have so many other muses, ooof. Okay, let’s see if I can try and break this down by fandom.
Doctor Who
Teine (dark!AU Tenth Doctor)
He’d respect Teine, certainly, but he’d always be wary around him and feeling like he’s constantly on edge. Being an eldritch abomination from before the universe walking around in a Gallifreyan body that already feels off to humans and is the last of a people that controlled the laws of Time itself, Teine tends to have that effect on quite a few people (who aren’t companions). Why do you think Torchwood wanted xem dead, after all?
Cousin Justine
She’s the last surviving member (in her timeline, anyway, and she seems to be running into quite a few “last surviving members) of Faction Paradox, a New Orleans voodoo time-travelling crime syndicate cult that got itself kicked off of Gallifrey way back when because their founder would not stop deliberately pissing off the other Time Lords. Has witch-blood, inherited the Shadow of Grandfather Paradox himself, can do a lot of things with her spirit-weapon that normal Cousins and Faction members can’t do, and her formal wear consists of Victorian-era dress and the hybrid skull of a Great Vampire/Time Lord from an aborted timeline that never happened. So yeah, Damon’s going to dig the aesthetic but be incredibly cautious around her, the same way he’s wary around upper-level demons and warlocks.
Charmed (1998)
Chris Halliwell
Damon already doesn’t like Chris, and the feeling is mutual.
Morrigan Wolf (OC)
She’s his daughter, one he raised himself, so naturally he’s going to get along well with her. Still does, even after she’s fully grown and come into her powers as a full Darklighter.
Devlin Booker (Warlock OC)
Oh man, there’s going to be so, so much shit-talking based on their respective species. So very much. Also, Damon’s jealous that one of Devlin’s natural powers is the ability to shapeshift into a panther.
Billie Jenkins
Hahahahaha, nope. He’s heard the story of the Ultimate Power and the blonde teenage witch who was the Charmed Ones’ protegee. Damon’s staying far, far away from Billie, thanks. Even after she’s returned to a semi-normal life to continue with college.
Christy Jenkins
That’s also a huge nope. Damon had heard the rumors of the Triad keeping a young, powerful telepathic firestarter witch and raising her… plus, he’s seen the destruction left in her wake in the Underworld after she was reunited with her sister Billie and they became the Ultimate Power. If Christy ever showed up in his corner of the Underworld, he’s going to black-orb out of there so very fast.
Murdina/Murdoch (kelpie OC)
…He’s a sucker for a pretty face + horses, okay. Being seduced by a kelpie is probably how he’s gonna die (again).
Barbas, the Demon of Fear
Damon is terrified of Barbas (rightfully so) and wants nothing to do with him, so if he ever does encounter Barbas, he's going to black-orb out as fast as possible.
21 Jump Street (1987)
Tbh, Damon is just going to take one look at Tom Hanson, Judy Hoffs, and Dennis Booker and nope out. He’s not going to make the mistake of taunting young-looking full-fledged cops in their early twenties over how they still look like teenagers (especially since it’s one of Hanson’s berserk buttons, even after he’s joined Jump Street). Also because he doesn’t like cops in general, but… y'know.
Charmed (2018)
Harry Greenwood
Being a British Whitelighter that reminds him so very much of a Giles knock-off, Damon’s automatically going to hate Harry on sight and principle, tbh. It doesn’t get any better when he realizes just how much control the Elders in Harry’s universe have over Whitelighters, especially considering that the Elders here are witches, not higher-ranking Whitelighters. Also, Damon refuses to call that method of teleportation orbing. That’s not orbing, that’s fucking Apparition from the Harry Potter movies.
jimmy Westwell
Ironically, Damon would get on much better with Jimmy, Harry’s Darklighter counterpart. Still disagrees with the form of teleportation he uses being referred to as "black orbing” (because sorry, it’s not). Damon’s pissed the fuck off when he learns that Jimmy’s spent the majority of the past 60 years or so trapped as sentient smoke in a bottle, and then was enslaved by humans the instant he was finally freed.
Misc. fandoms & OCs
Maria Valdez (Wolf Shifter OC)
Oh man, Damon and Maria are going to hate each other on sight. I will not elaborate.
Death/Der Tod (Elisabeth das Musical)
Damon’s going to take one look at Death and run far, far away in the opposite direction (while silently squeeing on the inside, because Elisabeth is one of his favorite musicals).
Thorn (Scooby-Doo)
Thorn’s going to be wary of Damon at first, depending on how long it’s been since everything with Ben Ravencroft (and Damon’s probably going to remind her of the horror writer a little bit), but Damon’s open about liking her band’s music and respecting her as a musician so they warm up to each other eventually while each of them is dancing around the fact they’re connected to the supernatural world.
Will Vandom (W.I.T.C.H.)
The moment she sees him doing anything Darklighter-y, Will is probably going to go all Guardian of Kandrakar on Damon’s ass and unleash some quintessence and/or the power of the Heart of Kandrakar on him after she’s transformed. Meanwhile, there’s Damon wondering when his life turned into a Sailor Moon episode and he’s half-expecting this redhead with flower-petal wings to go into Usagi’s “In the name of the Moon, I will punish you!” speech.

I guess Damon regenerated into Timothy dalton too
145th place
145th place goes to character 81, aka Damon of Gallifrey from Doctor Who Arc of Infinity!
Propaganda: He is a calm and sweet scientist and technician from an advanced and plot important civilization in the universe, on a planet at the center of our galaxy. He is an old friend of the main male protagonist, and actually seems to treat the main female protagonist like an adult so I decided to ship them.
Tumblr media
In round 1, poll #27, he received 38 votes out of 107, or 35.5%.
In round L2, poll #22, he received 32 votes out of 52, or 61.5%.
In round L3, poll #22, he received 13 votes out of 29, or 44.8%.
In all, he received 83 votes out of 188, or 44.15%.
And with that, we are 3/4 of the way through tier 3 of these reviews!

A torrent of random thoughts from my Classic Who watch, this time the first half of season 20.
Tumblr media
I don’t know what fandom wisdom says abut Arc of Infinity (fandom wisdom isn’t something I give a lot of credit to anyway), but I’m not really a bit fan. The story structure is so weird, having a plot going on in Amsterdam and the Gallifreyan Capitol that don’t converge apart from the odd phone call until the final part. That said, the scene were the attack on the Tardis is intercut with the boys sleeping uneasily in a crypt was delightfully gothic. But apart from the production team once again taking as many opportunities as possible to show off their overseas location filming, most of the story was some rather dull Gallifreyan politics. It definitely felt like the Doctor should’ve ended up on Earth sooner. Nyssa almost feels like a new character with all the focus she’s forced to get when she’s the Doctor’s only companion. I don’t think she was written or acted as emotionally before she is when the Doctor is in danger on Gallifrey. Plus, it was cool to see her go on a killing spree (or stunning spree, whatever), which is a visual which sticks out in my mind when I think about this story. It’s cool to see Tegan investigating things on her own too, and cute to see the two companions happy to meet up at the end, even if the Doctor is hilariously but obviously annoyed at her rejoining them. That adds to my theory that he kinda left Tegan behind on purpose last story, an action that for some reason goes unaddressed and unexplained, but honestly it was probably good for Tegan to get some time to grieve Adric without the Doctor forcing her to repress everything. Do I just not like the Fifth Doctor? No, I think I just don’t like it when main characters have flaws that go so blatantly ignored. It’s nice to get a Leela reference and a Romana reference! I know the Doctor must have friends on Gallifrey, but it feels weird that Damon and Hedin are treated almost like characters we should know. Maybe it feels particularly weird because the story goes so unnecessarily hard on the ‘good guys are actually the bad guys’ fake-out. Also, some truly weird and unbelievable statistics are pulled out about the Time Lords. I know it feels extra weird now with all the EU content out there, but even for just the show thus far they felt silly. A Tardis recall circuit has apparently only been used twice before in Time Lord history. A Time Lord has only been destroyed (legally executed, presumably?) once before. And Borusa says “You know that capital punishment has long been abolished here in Gallifrey.” Didn’t the Doctor literally get put on death row previously in The Deadly Assassin?? Any other random points? Well, I don’t like to nitpick- no that’s not true, everyone likes to nitpick. I don’t like to let nickpicking ruin my enjoyment, but if a story brings up so many small points that it doesn’t satisfactorily answer, it starts to weigh it down. What exactly is the Ergon? How does the Doctor know about it and its name? What does the Ergon’s gun do to Tegan- teleport her dramatically? If so, why doesn’t it do the same to the Ergon later? The Ergon in general just looked funny enough to kind of ruin the aesthetic of the crypt scenes, sorry, which is a shame because the crypt aesthetic was one of the only things the story had going for it for me. I don’t know where ‘the spacetime element’ is an interesting or bad name for a piece of the Tardis console. Similarly, I don’t know whether I like the title Arc of Infinity- it’s a good title, but the arc is something that isn’t explained very well and doesn’t really have a large part in the story. Is there a little cafe on a walkway of the Capitol? Fun. And everyone talks about “No not the mind probe,” but nobody talks about the even flatter delivery of “Impulse laser?” near the start of this story from a guy who is about to be shot by an impulse laser. Finally, Omega himself looks great when he takes off his mask- gotta love Peter Davison in a black turtleneck. But things take such a turn in the last 10 minutes of the story. Omega has a quick scene where he simply enjoys some organ music and the view of a canal. It adds such a (sudden) tragic element to him, of a man who just wants to live in the real world again. Which is amplified when his final scene is played (again suddenly) extremely gritty, with the Doctor having to shoot him and cause his apparently agonising death. The last-minute tone shift is even more jarring when the show feels like it immediately chickens out on it, with the Doctor almost immediately after saying Omega might not be dead then ending the episode on a light-hearted note. I don’t often criticise the genius of author Nev Fountain, but I can’t help but feel he missed some obvious hooks there in his sequel audio Omega, in which Omega suddenly wants to return to his antimatter universe and leave the real one behind.
Snakedance! I think it’s not quite as good as Kinda, but it’s still really good! The way it creates a very believable and relatable world is so neat (maybe helped by my own interest in archaeology and ancient history studies which is represented in this). There’s always very realistic dialogue and acting. The plot is a little slower and more meandering than Kinda, and it’s a shame Tegan isn’t in it more (a downside Kinda shared). I don’t really have as much to say about the themes of this one like I did with the previous Mara story, though I’m sure they’re there. I’m left with just things to list off that I liked about the story. Part one has another fantastic cliffhanger, made better by the Fifth Doctor theme tune. Some of the Mara moments are genuinely unnerving, like Lon talking with Tegan’s voice. Lon is a great character, and I wish he was in more of it without being possessed tbh. But I did like how sometimes the Mara possessed people, and sometimes it likes to play on the temptations of people in order to manipulate them. I also liked the creepy moment that the carnival man is standing still in the dark cave to surprise someone, with the added irony that that’s what he suggested Tegan do at his hall of mirrors earlier. There’s a lot of altered states in this one; dreams, the sound machine, the snake poison, possession. And the use of sound could be very striking. The cutting between the noise of the ceremony and the calm of the Doctor meditating with Dojjen is very striking. And the same things with the fucking killer ending which goes from the intensity of the Mara trying to manifest to the silent horror of everyone recovering from it, followed by the end credits screaming in before you barely get a moment to process it all. I’m still not sure if I love it or not, but it sure as heck leaves an impression.
I spent ages looking for Mawdryn Undead and Terminus without the optional CGI special effects that were included on the DVD, because for some reason they’re hard to find online. I don’t know why people would prefer those versions: to me the old practical methods and less sophisticated special effects are not only part of the charm, but part of the original production and storytelling. It’s the same reason I enjoy the original versions of the Star Wars films rather than the many re-edits. Not so much because I’m a purist (at least I hope not), but because I like watching these things as products of their historical times as well as for their stories. Besides, the added CGI effects can often break my suspension of disbelief more than bad practical effects (even if it’s good CGI, which is not guaranteed) because it simply doesn’t look like it fits with the rest of the show. Also, literally who would want to watch Mawdryn Undead without the eye-wateringly horrendous original ‘80s training video effect behind Turlough and the Black Guardian when they make their dark deal. The new effect is the most boring thing ever and actually looks halfway good. Get that shit outtahere.
ANYWAY. Mawdryn Undead is a story of many different tones for me. This bit will mostly be me listing off random things in the story in roughly chronological order. The first episode almost felt like it could be a pantomime, though that’s probably mostly because of the Black Guardian in all his crow-headed glory, and the sometimes hysterical background music. If you haven’t watched the scene in the first few minutes when Turlough steals and then crashes the Brigadier’s car, please god look it up. Bloody iconic. It’s hilarious watching how quickly and thoroughly Turlough throws Hippo under the bus for stealing the car, but very satisfying for me personally who wants more deeply flawed and antagonistic companions. Also, my longest-running DnD character is called Hippo, so hearing the name bandied about felt so weird jsldkfj. It was kind of surprising how rude the Brig could be to students, but maybe that’s just what you’d expect to hear at a British public school. Considering how the Black Guardian pretended to have pure intentions, it was also kind of surprising to hear him shout “In the name of all that is evil!” at the end of the episode, but again maybe that’s just what you’d expect to hear at a British public school. I started vibing with the story way more than I expected when it became the Brigadier recounting to the Doctor the events of 6 years ago, which was when the Doctor’s present companions met him, and for the audience both plots were unwinding simultaneously. I love that kind of plotting in a time travel story. Makes it extremely satisfying to follow when the plots effect each other and weave together (eg when the Brigadier says he remembers the Tardis leaving without him, when actually his past self didn’t see that happen until part four). I also liked how the Doctor figures out something’s up with Turlough very quickly and takes a moment to show that he disapproves, but still keeps him around anyway. I imagine it’s a mix of wanting Turlough where he can see him, and wanting to help him. Speaking of what Turlough has going on, is it just me who thought it wasn’t made very clear that he’s an alien in his first story? There’s maybe a few lines that suggest it, and it was obviously the plan from the beginning since the following stories reference it, but honestly if I went into this not knowing he was an alien I’m not sure I would’ve figured it out by the end of this one. Why would Tegan and Nyssa assume that the burnt figure they find is the Doctor? It’s a kinda fun mistaken identity plot that adds to the many moving parts of this story, but obviously the burnt figure was imagined to be a lot harder to identify in the script. But I don’t mind too much when it’s followed up by Tegan’s healthy scepticism in the face of Nyssa’s panicked belief, and the Brigadier’s hesitant attempts to keep both sides happy. Tegan’s honestly very on point in this story. Watching through her episodes make me feel like she gets flanderised a bit in the audios as an argumentative woman who can’t follow a sci-fi plot. As time goes on, she’s shown a lot to be an extremely competent companion in the face of the Doctor’s adventures: see also Earthshock. The backhalf of the story gets a bit bogged down with everyone wandering around Mawdryn’s spaceship. Makes me feel like this would’ve been a very tight three-parter. But it is hilarious that there’s like half a dozen different factions with their own goals, and literally all of them want the past Brigadier to leave. So he spends ages getting shuffled round and out of the way, but he still ends up doing exactly what nobody wanted him to do at the end. The brigadiers creating their own temporal energy is a clever way to end the plot, but the fact that they coincidentally do it at the exact microsecond they needed to feels a bit too contrived. It feels like this could’ve been one of the best plots in Classic Who with just a few tweaks. Finally, the moral dilemma in this story is very interesting, but the Doctor’s response to it is even more so. It’s never brought up that killing Mawdryn’s crew is what he objects to, only that he doesn’t want to sacrifice his own future regenerations. He repeatedly objects to that aspect, and specifically phrases it as the end of him as a Time Lord. Could you say something about the Doctor preaching against the superiority of his people but then hesitating to give up their benefits? Maybe link it to this Doctor’s rather old world British aesthetic? I’m sure there’s other ways you could look at this situation too, since it’s such a complex moral issue.

I've been quietly obsessing over Arc of Infinity again and- What gets me is how?? There are no braincells anywhere ever?? Damon and Nyssa agree that there is a traitor on Gallifrey and that the traitor is part of the High Council. They then decide that they must tell Hedin about this

V, Vin, Zero, Einzelgänger, Dantalion & Family were established on June 10, 2010. All original characters belong to and written by Victoria, with the base influence of abilities of BBC Doctor Who. They are created for written roleplay purposes, the faceclaims that are chosen shows the physical description, the appearance of said character.  V, a Time Lord, hails from Gallifrey, alongside her brother Vin and her sisters, Allura and the Vigilante. At this current point in their lives, they have lived up to thousands (and possibly billions of years). The reason for their prolonged regeneration cycles is due to their father, titled the Scientist, used the technology of their species to grant themselves an near limitless amount of regenerations. Default appearances of V and Vin are portrayed by Canadian actress Tatiana Maslany (seen right) and Scottish actor David Tennant.
Einzelgänger is another original character, dervived from the lore of V and Vin’s backstory while also connecting itself to the Bad Wolf entity in the BBC show. Portrayed as an alternative interpretation, a ‘what-if’ scenario involving V, and at an extent, the Vigilante during the climax of the Parting of Ways episode of Doctor Who. Posing as a villain in this context, she is one of many known adversaries towards V and her family. Constant appearance is that of Maslany as Rachel Duncan in the Canadian show, Orphan Black.
Dantalian is an original character with their backstory in direct reference to Solomon’s Goetia of Demonology, tying to Vin’s path in their backtstory. He is seen as a ‘frenemy’ or a adversary, depending on the interaction. He is one of the few original characters that is based in a form of actual mythology/religion as part of their character’s backstory. Default faceclaim is Tennant, however, because they are a demon of many faces, their other faces include Fairuza Balk, Una Damon, Taiyo Ayukawa and many others.
Zero is an alternative universe version of Vin from an alternate version of their universe, his default faceclaim being Lee Byung Hun/Byung Hun Lee. He is seen as cold, malicious and self-isolating, preferring to be an assassin for hire. He too has other regenerations and is only used as a plot device unless requested as such.
This roleplay blog explores themes that are not suitable for anyone under the age of eighteen or under the legal adult age within their state and or country. These themes vary upon both comedic purposes and sexual and or violent content. It involves strong brutal violence (blood, torture, guns knives, etc.,), pervasive language (swearing), strong sexual content (under the tag: mv: carnal delectation), and reference to using drugs along with other implied dark actions acting towards or done by the characters themselves. Note that this is all fictitious and for the personal entertainment of the writers’ within the confined space of their blog. Triggering content will be tagged as such. “Why are you keeping me prisoner here?”
Elizabeth Holmes rolled her eyes so far she almost strained a muscle, something she inherited from Father Damon Salvatore without a DOUBT- she never did have much patience for stupidly cliché questions, they were so utterly dull.
Tumblr media
"FIRST of all, don't flatter yourself babe, you aren’t a prisoner." She snarked, that delectably cold British sass seething through her every word. "SECOND of all, I'm not KEEPING you, you're here for as long as you hold potential to be useful to me for this insanely stupid situation I'm dealing with." Lizzy continued, genuinely pottering around her gorgeous wine cellar where she had locked her victim and tied said person to a chair, currently moving a box of expensive daggers to a shelf to tidy up.
She paused, instantly distracted by something f a r more interesting out of the corner of her eye. "Uh-! Is t h a t my machete on the floor?!" Elizabeth laughed and stooped to pick it up, waving it with pride. "I've been looking EVERYWHERE for this! G o d, what a day to be alive huh?" She celebrated, leaving the room.
She was gone for a good twenty seconds. She was busy choosing a fun new place to display the blade! She loved her knives.
She did eventually remember to come back to her weird hostage/idiot/potential extended family member, sweeping back into the room. "Anyway! Where was I? Oh my god I completely forgot let me check my n o t e s..." She sighed, pulling a little notepad out of her pocket. "Ah yes! Got it, here: questions." She read aloud, before clearing her throat.
"Number one: who the fuck are you?" She read out, large false lashes wafting as she glanced up from the page to her listener for every point. "Number two: What the hell are you doing in Mystic Falls?" She continued. "Number Three: DO you have any affiliation with The Doctor from Gallifrey? And side note are you aware of the vampire family thing here under the name Mikaelson because he's super involved with t h a t." She turned over the little page. "Ah! And last but not least Number Four! Why did you reach for my attention? I mean you've g o t it now, unlucky. Now we're both suffering." She squinted dramatically, scrutinising the reception of this bombardment of interrogations.

It’s odd, my first reaction to this (as awesome as this meta is) was that the only Time Lords who don’t have names are Renegades, and all proper Time Lords have names.
The following Time Lord names were heard in Classic Who (on the show itself): Goth, Engin, Spandrell, Runcible, Borusa, Hildred, Solis, Pandak, Rassilon, Omega, Drax, Andred, Rodan, Flavia, Thalia, Morbius, Azmael, Hedin, Salyavin, Maxil, Damon, Kelner, and of course Romanadvoratrelundar
The DWEU expanded some of those names so they would better fit with Romana’s. For example, Andred’s full name is Andredaselus. However some of the extended names do not match that particular naming scheme, like Fuldanquin Borusa.
As for New Who, the credits of Hell Bent revealed the name of one of the Time Lords the Doctor interacted with in that episode, the soldier who said he had been at Skull Moon during the Time War was named Gastron. Some of the other Time Lords seen during Moffat’s era have been given names in the DWEU, including in works written by Moffat himself (Rassilon’s right hand guy in Day of the Doctor was named Androgar in Moffat’s novelization).
Interestingly, Drax was a Renegade but he continued to use his actual name.
We actually also heard on TV some more Gallifreyan names than those above. In the serial The Invasion of Time (1978) we are introduced to a group of Outsiders (Time Lord Academy drop outs who decided to leave the capitol and live in the desert) and the names we heard there were: Nesbin, Presta, Ablif and Jasko
Then there is the Sisterhood of Karn (Time Lords and other Gallifreyans who made the very understandable choice to leave Gallifrey and join a commune of lesbian witches). Named on screen members include New Who’s Ohila, and High Priestesses Maren and Ohica.
There is also commentary in the DWEU that tells us extended names like Romanadvoratrelundar are in Old High Gallifreyan, and are tied to social class. The names of the Houses some of the Time Lords are associated with also seem to be embedded in their names (for example, Romana is a member of House Dvora)
EIGHT: Ooooh. Now there’s a voice I recognize. Come on! Don’t be shy! Step forward! Celestial Intervention Agency Coordinator Vansellostophossius, if you please! Ah, oh I’m sorry I forget, you never were all that keen on the ostophossius bit, were you? Terribly common. Perfecter Zorak came up with something rather better if I remember rightly! VANSELL: If you really think I will be in the least bit affected by any sordid reminisces relating to our time at the Academy, all of six hundred years ago- EIGHT: Nosebung. That was it! Nosebung. Um, or, was it, uh, Toastrack? VANSELL: That wasn’t me, Doctor! As well you know it. EIGHT: Ah. Yes. Well, quite right Vansell. I do apologize. No need to get sniffy.
Neverland, Doctor Who Main Range 33, written by Alan Barnes, directed by Gary Russell, June 2002
VALYES: Good morning ladies and gentlemen and others! My name is Valyestriandruluma, although for those of you visiting our shores lacking grounding in the Old High Gallifreyan language, it may be easier to refer to me as Acting Chancellor Valyes.
Insurgency, Gallifrey 2.4, written by Steve Lyons, directed by Gary Russell, June 2005
Buuuuuuuuuuuut as soon as I started to think about those names, it also occurred to me that an argument can actually be made that all of those names are just nicknames.
There is a exchange in a Virgin Missing Adventure novel from 1995 that suggests that Romanadvoratrelundar, like Theta Sigma, is an Academy nickname (in 2015 Big Finish adapted this book into an audio drama. They left the dialogue in this scene as it is in their adaption):
‘Your brushwork is awfully broad,’ said the Doctor, who was looking over his shoulder. ‘Naturally,’ the artist replied. ‘It’s a very broad work, conceptually speaking.’ He broke off and stared at the Doctor.  ‘And who in the halls of Hades might you be?’ The Doctor bowed. ‘Well, I’m the Doctor, this is Romana, and we’re travellers, and we thought we’d take a look at your gallery, and...’ He trailed off as he realized that the artist was not listening. The fellow was frantically smoothing at his bald head with one hand, attending to hair that had disappeared long ago. The other hand was extended towards Romana. His large rolling eyes were occupied in an active appraisal of her. The Doctor huffed. Romana tended to bring this reaction out in people. It was most irritating. ‘Ramona,’ the artist said slowly. ‘Romana,’ she corrected him. ‘Romana.’ His slippery tongue relished every syllable. He took her hand and planted a small kiss upon it. ‘An enchanting name for an enchanting young woman. Where did you come by it?’ ‘Prydon Academy,’ she told him. ‘And I’m actually a lady.’ He took a step back and emitted a seedy chuckle from the deepest point of his larynx. ‘A lady, oh, of course, yes, I should have realized! A regal vision! The noble brow, the milk white skin, those pert lips.’ The Doctor coughed. ‘Er, excuse me?’
The Romance of Crime (1995) by Gareth Roberts
Speaking of Theta Sigma, here are the two times that name is used on screen:
The first is when the Doctor runs into Drax:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Doctor corrects Drax and tells him to stop calling him by that name later in their conversation
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Armageddon Factor, Season 16 Serial 6, written by Bob Baker & Dave Martin, directed by Michael Hayes, January 20 - February 24th 1979
The second that name is used in the TV show was in episode that aired almost ten years later, when the Doctor made it clear that Theta Sigma was a nickname they were given at Prydon Academy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Happiness Patrol, Season 25 Serial 2, written by Graeme Curry, directed by Chris Clough, November 2-16 1988
So there is some textual basis to argue, if you want to, that the names of non-Renegade Time Lords were nicknames like Theta Sigma, given to them at the Academy and not their true names, which are unspoken for the reasons outlined in the above meta.
Circular Galifreyan: Answering the First Question, And Why the Doctor Keeps Their Name a Secret
SPOILERS FOR ARRIVAL (2016)
I just watched Arrival and it got me thinking. The alien species in that movie (Heptapods) use a language that is circular – words and whole sentences look like this:
Tumblr media
This is because Heptapods have the ability to see into the future, so when they use a word or object, they are defining that thing’s entire existence, from creation to destruction.
Do you know what other alien language is primarily based on circles, and is used by a race that can see through time?
Circular Galifreyan.
Tumblr media
Now I know the show has established grammar rules for how this language works, but I couldn’t help thinking, what if the Time Lords moved away from Old High Galifreyan (pictured below) once they invented time-travel because it made them look at the universe in an entirely different way?
Tumblr media
Now when discussing objects, Time Lords had to take their entire histories into account, so their language changed to accommodate that.
But what does that mean about the names of people?
A person’s name in Circular Galifreyan is not just a statement of who they are. It is also everything they ever were. Everything they ever will be. Their names act as prophecies for the people they will become.
At the same time, people aren’t objects. They are autonomous, and time isn’t fixed. They have the ability to better themselves and change their futures, thus changing their names in Circular Galifreyan
This is why Time Lords never use their real names, only titles. Out of respect for a person’s privacy and protection, because revealing their name in Circular Galifreyan is dangerous, exposing their future to a stranger that could manipulate them or judge them for things they haven’t even done yet.
So, Time Lords have two names; the one in Circular Galifreyan, which is a closely guarded secret, and the name they choose. This title can be a statement of intent (e.g. Lord Master), or an acceptance of the fate or duty laid out for them by their name (e.g. Lord General).
Or it could be an attempt to deny the prophecy, an attempt to change the future before it happens, even if it’s impossible.
Hence, Lord Doctor.
Imagine it, as a child, knowing you will commit terrible crimes, genocides, that you will destroy entire universes, because your name says so. No wonder the Doctor was an outcast from Galifrey, shunned by his own people, sleeping in the barn alone. No wonder they said he’d never make a Time Lord, because he was destined for war and slaughter, not learning. No wonder their best friend was the Master, driven insane as a child with an insatiable lust for power.
No wonder the prophecy of the Hybrid terrified him as a child – he knew it was him the prophecy spoke about because his name told him so. No wonder he ran away, no wonder he’s so determined to play the hero, no wonder he hated soldiers and war and weapons so much, even before he had a real reason to.
He knew the Time War was coming. But maybe there was still a chance for him to change the future.
In Twice Upon A Time, the First Doctor says he ran away to discover the source of good in the universe - the thing that kept evil at bay. What if he was trying to save himself? Trying to find the thing that could fix his destiny and save him from becoming a monster.
So he became that force of good almost accidentally, trying to prove there was still a chance for him, and saved everyone but himself.
No wonder she doesn’t tell anyone her name.
But we already know it. Because if the Doctor’s name is a summary of everything they’ve ever done and ever will do, every world saved and every life touched, it means the title of 7x13 The Name of the Doctor meant literally that - the Doctor’s time stream is their name.
It also explains the 12th Doctor saying that children know his name. 12 often breaks the 4th wall to talk to the audience, and this is him doing it again - he’s telling the children that watch the show that by doing so - by seeing the Doctor rise and fall and save and run - we understand them. We know them. We’re in on the joke, more than any character within the fiction of the show could be.
This explains why River Song - an archaeologist who dedicated her life to studying the Doctor - knows their name. It also explains why the Doctor considered this mortal woman his soulmate. They were both destined to be murderers, but they both rebelled against the destinies others gave them.
The title of this show is a question - Doctor Who - and the show itself is the answer. Actions speak louder than words.
