closed starter for @dopplgaenger The group is smaller today than it usually is, the sunshine coaxing folks back outside for more summer appropriate activities. It's needed after all the rain they've had, and the tourists seem more drawn to street side vendors and ghost performers than the dim lights of the museum. Damon's on a ghost walk of his own, so to speak, led by a woman with a painfully familiar face. From the moment he recognized her his common sense screamed for him to run for the hills, but his ego is always louder. Call it morbid curiosity or masochism. Damon's a glutton for punishment. He doesn't remember what number tour this is, but he's sure if he'd been paying attention he could recite the entire thing word for word by now. She's good at this. Sweet, engaging, professional. Damon hangs on the outskirts of the crowd mostly, watching her intentionally not watch him back. It's a game of sorts, one he isn't sure he's winning. Surely she recognizes him? Or do all the patrons blend together? He's smug enough to believe he's not that forgettable. Maybe she's shy? Or maybe she remembers that he - but she couldn't. Right? Damon had compelled her, or at least he thinks he did. Every night these last couple months had been one bloody drunken blur, but snatching her from the crowd had jolted him to his senses. Well, not all of them, but at least one sense of restraint. It's not like she ran away screaming the other day, or any day since he's made himself a group regular. That has to count for something. The pamphlet he's picked up a good four or five times now has a Q&A section listed that he's never heard her even mention yet. It was at no detriment to the content of the tour, of course, but he was starting to get annoyed by how quickly she scurried off afterward. Avoiding him, maybe, or was that his ego again? Making it about himself? He doesn't make a habit of keeping it in check to begin with. The first day he lingered back a good fifteen minutes to wait for her, but she'd been long gone. The second day, ten minutes. And so forth. It's very Stefan of him to be so patient, he thinks, sucking himself into an endless obsessive turmoil. He isn't Stefan, though, and he certainly doesn't want to be, even if that seemed to be the key to most of his issues as of late. The thought's enough to shake him to switch tactics. This tour will be his last, he decides. Because today? Today will be different. It's mostly thanks to the trio of elderly people in his company that haven't shut up since the tour started. One can hardly hear, the other can barely see, and the third speaks with such a thick accent that makes every word borderline unintelligible. Somehow they have every question that could ever be asked loaded in the chamber, and have zero qualms about interrupting in the middle of her speech, no matter how innocuous. It slows the tour's pace to a painstaking degree, but she seems to be taking it in stride. Truth be told he's impressed, and a little amused at the poetic nature of it all. With only the five of them - Damon, Cami, and three wise monkeys standing between the two - she's much easier to corner. When they round the final corner of their walk he knows exactly where to situate himself to prevent her from slipping away so easily. The elder folks prattle on their goodbyes, and Damon keeps his eyes glued to the girl who won't look back. Not until she's forced to, because he's weaseled himself directly into her exit path. Like most of his plans, he hasn't thought much further ahead than where he is right in the moment. "You're avoiding me," he says bluntly, but there's no malice to his tone. Maybe a 'hello' would be a cleaner start, but he's been patient long enough. "And I want to know why."

'Three Days Before' Extra Oneshot
Oneshot that I have always wanted to write of how I imagined a scenario of three days before Hannah's disappearance, both as the canon of the game, as the 'What if...?, I hope you like it 🤭
Sorry that everything is so separated, I have passed everything from the phone
---------------------
*Macie POV*
If there's one thing I can't stand, it's having to be the girl from the café: 'Macie, bring me a cappuccino', 'Macie, bring me a venti', 'Macie, have my macchiato', 'Macie, a lungo for me' , etcetera etcetera… And of course, who pays for those coffees? Exactly: me. As if it hadn't been hard for me to save for the blouse I've been wearing today. I have to divide the money between the house, Henry's needs and my subscriptions that keep me going in these chaotic days. Sitting on the couch… Turning on the TV… And watching the romance between Elena and Stephan, and Damon's sexy smile. If it weren't for them, I don't think I would survive.
And last night I needed it after that date. I have to let Lian introduce me to the boys, but of course, if she was lucky to meet such a lovely man, why trust her?
Or maybe it scared them when I look at them closely, as if analyzing them. Although thanks to analyzing them, I found out that one of them was hiding the fact that he was married. Ugh… It's sad that I now use these skills to find a boyfriend. Why can't I use it at work as well with some news? “Also because I'm too picky… “ I comment as I carry the coffees “Well, this was the lungo, this was the macchiato…” I say as I walk. The phone rings and I stop walking, answering. “Hello?” “Connors, there’s another coffee order” my superior says, speaking quickly “, bring me an Americano. “What?” I put the phone on my shoulder, to press it against my ear “But I'm already halfway there!” “Then it’ll be okay if you turn around and buy another one.” “But Mr. Jones-“ When I was about to continue the discussion —or try to, because he's my superior—, a guy pushed me, spilling the coffee beans on my blouse. My blouse! My €75 blouse! “But what are you doing?!” I yelled, glaring at him. “I am sorry!” I see how he takes out some coins and leaves them in my hand “Goodbye!” He runs off as if it cost him his life. "This costs more than a few coins!" Came back! He yelled, watching her leave. I tried to get his face, but he was wearing a mask and hood. I only kept his eyes. And with that, I can't do much. But would they really take a complaint for ruining my blouse? “Great...” I look at the blouse and finally, the coffees “No, no... They're going to kill me... My money...” “Hey!” I look up, seeing a policeman approaching me “Have you seen…” he takes a breath as if he were hungry, tired “Have you seen a guy in black and carrying a big bag?”
I stare at him, unable to speak. He probably doesn't remember me, but I do, he was one of those who messed with me in the past.
I open and close my mouth, wanting to answer. But the words don't come out.
I press my lips into a thin line. Nervous. "He's gone" I say, raising my hand "over there." I point to the opposite side, automatically. As if I wanted to ruin his job. Make him look ridiculous. “Thank you!” He is going in the direction I told him. I take a deep breath. I can't believe what I've done. I look down at the coffees and sigh. This doesn't look good and I don't have more money for more coffees. I have to get money from an ATM and I'm going to be late. "This day couldn't get any worse...”
I had bought me an ordinary T-shirt. While the blouse, I left it at the dry cleaners. I had bought the coffees again. How I hated it. “Where have you been?” Lian approaches me, nervous “They haven't stopped asking about you” she walks next to me, taking little steps “And the blouse? Why do you get a smiley cat t-shirt?” "Because I need something to cheer me up right now" I reply quickly, while I am taking almost leaps and bounds ”. I'm sorry, I'll tell you right now." I walk away from her, going to the meeting room. I knock on the door and wait for them to order me in. I keep waiting, until they finally open the door for me, almost as if they were going to throw it down. “Where were you?” Christian asks me quickly. “They threw the coffees at me and-“ “I asked you where you were, not to tell me what happened” he takes the coffee trays and closes the door for me. I close my eyes, taking a breath to calm myself from going in and yelling at him. “You’re welcome.” I reply, walking away from there.
I return to my desk and see the latest news messages to post on the website. There is always a lot of work and they pass everything to me. Someday I will have something good to tell. Of that I am sure.
Maybe twenty years from now.
I am in charge of decorating the page a bit, following the instructions. Lian walks over to my table, grabbing a chair. "Details, now" she tells me authoritatively, "have you met the boy from last night?" Is that why you have other clothes than this morning? “No, an idiot who was running has thrown all the coffees on me.” "Oh! Just like in romantic movies!” Lian gets excited and I return to the computer, not really wanting to talk “And? What happened? Has he given you his number? Have you given it to him?” “Coins.” “What?" “He gave me some coins, he said ‘I'm sorry’ ” I put on the most pitiful voice I can do “and he ran away. And it's not like I saw his face, he was covered.” "Have you checked to see if you've been robbed?" "No, he hasn't robbed me" I sigh exaggeratedly “. I hope I never see that guy with bad manners again or if not...” “You’re going to kill him for destroying your blouse.” My blouse… my precious blouse… I put my hands to my head. It's better not to tell Lian what happened next, because I don't even know why I did it myself. Why did I help him after ruining my clothes? <<His eyes… he looked quite desperate.>> "Earth calling Macie" Lian snaps her fingers, waking me up from my thoughts "And the boy from yesterday? What happened?” “Well…” “Well?” I shrug. I hadn’t gotten to have that special connection I’m looking for. Maybe Lian is right and I’m too picky. "Maybe it's time to accept having a rabbit farm or… Do you think Klaus will still be free?" "No" she holds up a finger "don't drag yourself into the past Macie, but don't try to find everything wrong with the guys you know, okay?" “I don’t, it’s just-“ “But what exactly are you looking for?” I start to think, what do I want? I want someone who will impress me when he speak, someone who will make me feel like before. A man who when he speaks makes me think: I want to hear you forever even if I have no idea what you're talking about, but I find your emotion adorable. I don't know. A man who makes me sigh because of his way of speaking? That his way of thinking is surprising? "Someone I can get into when we thinking and we can… I don't know, have fun with the smallest things we can." I tilt my head, continuing to think. “And if you're looking for that so much, why do you reject them after one date?” Lian places her hands on my shoulders, shaking me “Where is the second date to meet him?” I laugh and carefully stop her. Not wanting to hurt her because of the pregnancy. “Because my instinct tells me that it is not what I am looking for.” “Your instinct fails” she moves away little by little “what are you waiting for? The guy you've been waiting for so long to send you a message without him having your number?” I roll my eyes, with a smile. Chosen my future: I will have a rabbit farm.
As night falls, I stretch out on the couch with a bowl of yogurt and chocolate cereal. Henry jumps onto the couch, coming up next to me. "Why do you think the police would be chasing him?" I ask Henry, remembering the guy from this morning "Maybe he's stolen something? He was carrying a rather large bag and seemed heavy…” I start thinking about him. My curiosity can me, it's in my blood. But then I remember what he did and I'm mad at him again “. Let's leave it. Choose Henry. Today we have the next chapter of Vampire Chronicles or we see Twilight?” Henry ignores me, as usual “Yeah, maybe I could start watching something else.” I start to eat and decide to saw 'Fallen', today we will change the fangs for the wings.
*Jake POV*
I had arrived in the city earlier than I expected. I had managed to evade police surveillance at the station again. Blending into the crowd had worked. I always had to choose the time when there were more people, It is easier to be invisible and for no one to pay attention to you, they are so absorbed in their thoughts that I do not exist for them. I am just a shadow, a figment of the imagination of someone who thinks they have seen a person. I'm nobody to pay attention to.
I look on my cell phone the way in which to get to some buildings in the area of the university. There are always too many people there for them not to remember me. An area where every day there is always someone new. They have been abandoned for a long time because the construction company made them with unreliable materials, so when the town hall found out, the guy who was in charge of building them fled. I think it will be good for me to spend time there. I have to save a little, I have already paid enough for the bus ticket. And I have to take advantage of the fact that at the moment they are not going to knock them down. I look up from my phone, seeing a guy steal a lady's purse. <<Do not get in mess.>>
It is what I think. It is what I want to do.
<<Shit.>>
I silently approach the thief and doing his same trick, I manage to get the purse without him noticing. When I want to stealthily return it to her, she gets ahead of me, screaming. “My wallet!” She yells, looking at her pockets “I've been robbed!” I groan under my breath, tossing the small object into her hands. “The thief! He is!” She yells just as I run off. It is the last and only time that I helped someone. Never again.
I run out, being careful with the bag in which I have all my equipment. I jump down the stairs, from one railing to another. I hear the policeman from a long way away say to stop.
I keep running and look back for a moment, to see if he is still following me. I notice a strong blow, I have collided with something.
No. It is worse.
With someone. “But what are you doing?!” The young woman yells at me. I see that I have spilled several coffees on top of her blouse, but what happens today? “I am sorry!” I quickly took out the coins that I had in my pockets, to give them to her as an apology “Goodbye!” I run again, getting away from there. "This costs more than a few coins! Came back!” she yells at me and I mentally apologize to her several times.
This was not what was planned.
I am running into a dead end. I curse under the mask. I remain silent, listening to the conversation. “Hey!” I peek carefully. The policeman has stopped the girl “Have you seen…” he speaks with difficulty, I have made him run more than he can stand “Have you seen a guy in black and carrying a big bag?” I see she does not answer. I am worried. I have pissed her off enough, surely I have given her a good reason to give me away. "He's gone that way." I frown when I see her pointing to the opposite side where I had gone. Isn't she going to give me away? Why? “Thank you!” The policeman leaves in the direction indicated by her and I stay looking at her quite strangely. <<I better not be tempted by curiosity again, we already know what happened last time.>> I wait for her to leave and go out. People are my camouflage again.
Arriving at the buildings, I see a couple of cats in front of the back door. “Go away” I tell them quietly, gently brushing them aside with my hand “. Come on, do not make me angry.” The gray cat rubs between my legs. Too weird, they usually do not trust people. Maybe someone takes care of them. I enter the building, looking for the electrical panel. Locating it, I pull out the voltmeter to check the electricity in the building. <<Perfect, seems to work.>> It is better to use this method than having to turn on the lights to get attention. The first few months I used to not be careful about it and I always ended up running away from the place.
I climb the stairs until I reach the top floor. I prefer to have a view from above to see who is approaching the building. I take out the lock picks and begin to open the door. I had to learn a bit about vandalism, not that I wanted to, but it is necessary if sometimes I canot afford to stay in a motel to save a little and not spend too much.
As soon as I enter, I look at the floor. It is small, a student. It has furniture. They really had it all figured out to want to rent them out. I lower the blinds, but not before checking again to see if anyone followed me. I put the backpack on the ground and start to open the travel bag. I check that my equipment is correct after running off like that. "Okay, looks like everything's perfect." I mutter, beginning to pull out the computer tower and screens. Sometimes I feel like I had to bring too many things, but It is all I need to feel safe. If I destroy everything... maybe I would go crazy. More still can.
As I assemble all the equipment, I start thinking about that girl again. Why did she do it? She is supposed to tell the police that he is chasing a criminal where he has fled to. "Or maybe I am thinking about this because I do not have anything better to think about." I comment as I continue to run the cables. For years I have been careful in everything I do and just today it seems like everything went wrong. It is as if life laughed at me, knowing how paranoid I have become with the fear of believing that they are watching me all the time, following me.
I finish putting it all up. I turn on the computer and put the protection programs. I leave the backpack in the room and go to the bathroom. Luckily there is no mirror to look at my face. It is not like I dared to do it either. Do I deserve it? So that? To know what I judge myself for what I did? I knew what I was doing, but I never thought it would go to that extreme. I check the water, unfortunately, no hot water comes out. Luckily the showers I take are quick so as not to waste time.
I dress quickly, frozen. Although the cold does not bother me as much as before, I have had to sleep on the street at times because a motel was full.
Night falls and I see that I get an email notice. It is been years since I used that e-mail and I stopped using it because of a person. Only one person could send me a message to that email.
I read her message and worry invades me. For her to ask me for help after so many years after having cut all connection with her is strange. Due to the situation, I make an exception and call her by video call. “Hannah!” I exclaimed as soon as I saw her. She sighs in relief, even smiling at me. “Jake!” Good thing you called! “What happened?! Where are you?!” I ask worried. I try to look around, but everything is very dark. I manage to see something similar to a house and trees. Where is she? “What has happened- Ah!” A gloved hand appears, pulling her closer to her mouth, covering it. "Hannah!" I exclaimed nervously, beginning to not be able to breathe. The cell phone falls to the ground, revealing her shaking feet “Leave her! Leave Hannah!” It's stupid to yell that, like it's going to work. I put my hands to my head, worried, what do I do? What do I do, what do I do? I can't call the police!
I have no alternative.
It is to risk or not to do.
I return to the computer, trying to get some of Hannah's contacts, like Lilly. They have to know. They have to know!
I open a chat and add their friends. A boy named Thomas answers. ---------------------------------
Thomas Hello, stranger ----------------------------------
What am I doing? This may be too risky for me! I bring my hands to my head, thinking again about what I am doing. This is for Hannah. Come on Jake! --------------------------------
??? Hannah is in danger.

“Thought you would say that”
“So I have a little incentive for you”
“Come with me, have some fun, free food, make some decorations for OUR room OR… you stay here, say hello to elena when she comes by to pick up something, and deal with the noisy cleaner.
"Elena's coming by?"
Katherine let out a long and aggravated sigh before she pulled the covers back and moved to get dressed, frantically.
"What could she possibly be grabbing that isn't Damons crotch for once??" Katherine snapped, yanking a shirt off a hanger in the closet. She's clearly mad about being inconvenienced. At least there's free food.

Meryl Streep Donates $1 Million, Dozens of Wigs, Costumes to Striking Actors
The SAG-AFTRA Foundation has raised $15 million in the last three weeks for its emergency financial assistance fund, with some of Hollywood's biggest stars donating $1 million or more to help striking actors. Among the largest donors are George Clooney, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, Oprah, and Meryl Streep. In addition to a large 7 figure gift, Streep also gifted the actors dozens of wigs and costumes from her long career. "This was not a Sophie's Choice, and I have no Doubt that we are doing the right thing. I remember my days as a waiter, cleaner, typist, even my time on the unemployment line," Streep said. "In this strike action, I am lucky to be an Iron Lady and help out. Hope Springs eternal for a resolution to this strike. It's Complicated, but we will Defend Our Lives!"

Movie Review...House Party (2023)
(1/5) I'm not sure what the goal was for this film. Was it supposed to be funny, cool, a new classic? Do people even have house parties anymore? They tried to copy and paste the iconic dance scene from the first and the multiple celebrity cameos from the third, among some other things resulting in shallow remake. They could have named this something else and tried to start something new.
Aspiring club promoters and best buds Damon (Tosin Cole) and Kevin (Jacob Latimore) are barely keeping things together. Out of money, down on their luck and about to lose the roofs over their heads--and freshly fired from their low-lift jobs as house cleaners--the pair needs a huge windfall to make their problems go away. In a 'what the hell?' move, they decide to host the party of the year at an exclusive mansion, the site of their last cleaning job, which just happens to belong to none other than LeBron James. No permission? No problem. What could go wrong? How about a time traveling DJ, undependable security, a runaway guest list, one borrowed Lamborghini, angry rival promoters, a stolen championship ring, escalating property damage, an angry koala..? But also, one outrageous ride stacked with double-take cameos and timeless throwback tracks, R-rated comedy and two friends worth cheering for... you have to see to believe. After all, a night like this doesn't come around more than once (rottentomatoes.com)

chase is really starting to hate hospitals. coupled with the more-recent situation of ethan clinically dying twice ( resurrected thrice ) because of a crazed sensei, the smells of hand sanitizer, sterile packaging, coffee, floor cleaner, & a hint of blood makes chase want to rip himself out of his skin. he wishes there was some miracle cure for the situation he's in, but there isn't. but, he couldn't not be here - not when his fiancée is asleep in the hospital bed in front of him, too many needles in her arms from the IVs, & an oxygen cannula stuck up her nose. surprisingly, chase isn't holding her hand. the beeping of the various machines are nowhere near the word soothing. it's not like chase had thought they'd have been, because of the movies he's seen - they just make him almost unbearably anxious.
two days ago, chase, calla, devon & ethan had been overwhelmed by a horde of brainwashed cobra kai students - particularly those in what stingray had once referred to as the a team, hunted down various streets in the valley. it would've been laughable if it wasn't scary at the time. ethan'd been focused on getting devon out of that situation in one piece. ethan's fine, so's devon. according to the taller boy, he'd played it safer than i usually would've, given his recent brush with death. chase supposes having another hospital visit so close to the recent one would have been costly... not that you couldn't pay the bill. ( you would've felt inconvenienced by the trip, not the bill... & ruffled by the worry/spam texts & calls from your friends, even if you do appreciate the fact that they care. you just didn't want to be annoyed or worry anyone. that's literally it. )
unsurprisingly, cobra kai had been brutal in their attack... but here's a shocking headline: the attack had been spearheaded by none other than kenny, the de facto leader of the dojo now that robby's left. the younger boy had been merciless & slightly fucked up in a way that both surprised & concerned chase. ( way to fuckin' go, robby. ) chase managed to walk away from the fight in semi-decent shape. most notably, he's sporting bruised knuckles & a cut on his forehead, which thankfully isn't anywhere near his eyes. he'd gotten a concussion after arlo punched his head back into a brick wall. but more concerningly, calla's spleen had ruptured after a particularly hard, well-placed attack from damon, your younger brother. he'd attacked her with a fucking crowbar he'd picked up from the ground, like a fucking degenerate animal. chase had pretty much lost his goddamn shit - understandably so - while you were more concerned with getting calla to the hospital. her spleen rupturing had caused internal bleeding, but thankfully the removal surgery had been successful. there's a list of vaccines she'll have to take because she's more suspectable to disease now. but she's alive, & that's what matters.
after those events, damon'd better hope that he never crosses aspen or bennett... just ever. he's not-so-secretly rooting for the idea of calla & the caddell family pursuing legal action against damon, because... fucking jesus christ.
❝ according to what uncle johnny told miguel, you're out of cobra kai. unfortunately for you, i don't think miggy fully believes it himself... not that i think he's wrong for jumping to that conclusion. ❞ the brunet speaks tersely, cadence flat & a bit rough from disuse. miguel & robby don't have the best history. chase doesn't even glance over at his brother, hasn't, for any of robby's visits to the room. his body language is closed off, a loud warning in his emotionless eyes screams to not piss him off. his hazel eyes seem to remain focused on calla's sleeping form, but they're actually constantly flickering across the machines displaying her heartbeat, her oxygen levels, & everything else. he's terrified that if he walks out of the room, something will go seriously wrong. that he'll somehow lose his fiancée forever.
❝ most of my friends don't believe that you're out, either. pretty sure that you're gonna be spending a fuck ton of time convincing them otherwise. ❞ he's not sure if robby irrevocably burnt bridges with everyone else in miyagi-do ( excluding you ) & eagle fang. which is why he's decidedly keeping the words our friends out of his mouth. chase isn't sure if he blames robby for the attack because he left cobra kai, allowing kenny to take the top spot, or if he's grateful robby hadn't been leading it. he's just a mess, & this situation flat-out sucks. point blank.
chase clears his throat, his hands curling into fists. he hasn't slept twenty four hours, hasn't had anything to eat in eight, hasn't had a drink from the water bottle next to him in two. this is the most he's spoken to robby since junior prom. he twists his engagement ring, hazel hues flashing down towards calla's own ring. they'd gotten engaged just last month. every part of chase wants to protect her from the karate war, from cobra kai - that's all he's ever wanted, but he failed, & she's paying the price for it. ❝ i think dad was more worried about you being cobra kai's prince cobra than uncle johnny ever was. ❞ that's how it looked to chase, anyway. johnny'd been more focused on eagle fang than his own son being in shark-infested waters. & yes, he's still bitter about all of that shit. sue him. from robby betraying his friends, to johnny not doing anything about it, to ethan almost dying because of everyone else's inaction. ❝ pops & mom, too. ❞ he adds as an afterthought. in the brown household, dad is bobby, pops is kevin. ❝ i'm a little surprised that eth was the only one who did anything about that, in the end, but... well, ethan's ethan, so maybe i'm not that surprised. ❞ even if it was stupid goes unsaid.
finally, finally, chase looks at robby, dead in the eyes. his face is wiped clean of emotion. ❝ what the fuck are you gonna do about kenny ? ❞ his lips curl around kenny's name like a rot. he's your mess. clean it up, or i will.
@taughtpain sits with chase in calla's hospital room.

Who is Richie with the other person in those nsfw drawings?
[*checks pics* There's nothing to identify who. They might just be blank for the sake of randomness. The only one I can name is Damon in this one pic.]

Storyboard & Thumbnails: 3 Cats and a Mouse (Old Version)
A little storyboard edition of #throwbackthursday: my storyboard & thumbnails for my animated short in my Fall 2021 beginner 2D animation class. I still include these thumbnails so that you can see my process. Planning on redoing this into a cleaner board/less timed animatic in Adobe Fresco with their vector brushes.
Edits
The only tweak so far: the cat names from their placeholder names (since the short doesn't mention their names). Originally: Felicity = Happy, Tristan = Sad, Damon = Mad.
Thumbnails Commentary
Composition-wise, there are mostly minor changes b/w thumbs & final boards. Key differences were the additional shots (cut for time) and different poses.
Self Critique/Notes
+ Liked how the off-beat but kind of endearing climax turned out; developing of surreal humor
+ Liked how Tristan’s character arc turned out (unconfident -> determined)
- Possibly remove Felicity
-- No need for her after the beginning of the story???
+ Possible springboard of exploring her in other works
- For the re-do: focus more on better expressions (possibly pull from thumbnails)

I like what they have done with the Underground match, it’s a much cleaner stipulation than what Shane was doing
Also Damon & Thorne are really using the “open” ring to do tons of damage where they couldn’t with ring ropes

Air (2023)
★★★☆☆
Directed by: Ben Affleck
Written by: Alex Convery
Based on: Actual events
Perhaps not surprisingly, the film this brought to mind most by way of comparison was another Ben Affleck-directed inspired-by-true-evenets movie, 2012's Argo. Both are slickly produced period pieces telling stories whose outcomes are already well established (or at least easily inferred). The trick of both movies is that in Affleck's able directorial hands, there is a genuine air of tension and suspense. Argo covers the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis and the CIA operation tasked with rescuing them. Air covers the efforts of the flagging Nike basketball shoe division in 1984 as they try to convince young Michael Jordan to sign a shoe deal with them despite his preference for Adidas. In Argo, we know the hostages will be rescued so the operation will succeed. In Air, we know the Jordans will make the deal, and yet somehow the pre-determined outcome doesn't feel foregone while watching either.
The story follows Sonny Vacarro (played portly but exquisitely by Matt Damon), who is Nike's in-house basketball ambassador. The Nike basketball division in these years is getting clobbered by Converse and Adidas and Nike's board of directors is pressuring CEO Phil Knight (played as mystifyingly complex by Ben Affleck) to focus more on their bread-and-butter business: running shoes.
Marketing Exec Rob Strasser (Jason Bateman playing Michael Bluth again only without the convenient scapegoat of, well, the rest of the Bluths) is content to stick to their old losing strategy of picking up sponsorships for a few third tier players but Sonny wants to make a hail mary run at getting projected third round pick in the draft, Michael Jordan, by eschewing the diversification angle and blowing their whole budget on the one player.
The biggest obstacle to this is that Jordan has publicly and definitively stated he has no interest in working with Nike. Sonny then spends the first half of the movie slowly convincing everyone around him, Strasser, then Knight, that the plan has merit. The second half of the movie focuses on the dance between Sonny and Michael's mother, Deloris (played with room-shattering gravitas by Viola Davis) to give Nike a fair shake. The uphill climb and Sonny's shifting, ballsy strategies to overcome each hurdle are what make the movie really shine and the scenes with Damon and Davis are electric.
Some of the details of the creation of the iconic first edition Air Jordan are featured as well including a memorable performance by Matthew Maher as in-house shoe designer Peter Moore. Chris Messina also turns in a fun, over-the-top turn as Jordan's agent, David Falk. The one somewhat mystifying inclusion in the cast is Chris Tucker as Howard White. Tucker is... fine, doing more or less his usual hyper-verbal Chris Tucker thing, but the character brings very little to the overall narrative. Marlon Wayans's brief appearance as George Raveling is more impactful to the story and feels like the kind of character that would have been merged with White in a cleaner version of the script, but I understand one of real-life Michael Jordan's stipulations to Affleck was that White (a friend of Jordan) be included as a character in the film. I guess that makes Tucker's presence a necessary mistake?
The acting is universally excellent and the script and direction work in tandem to set just the right pace to give the story room to breathe while not bogging down with unnecessary side plots or belaboring the point. Like Argo, this isn't a flashy film that will make you want to rush out to see it again or even stick with you for a long time afterward, but it's got a lot going for it. That said, a couple of minor details did irk me a little. The way Michael Jordan himself is handled in the film is a bit peculiar; he's present in the film but fleetingly and Affleck goes a long way out of his way to keep the stand-in actor's face hidden from view and he says maybe two lines. I get that de-aging or deepfake style CGI (such as with the Luke Skywalker scenes in The Mandalorian) was probably out of scope for the project, but I think I'd have preferred to just let the actor be seen. The other small gripe is there is a framing device using what I presume are some of Phil Knight's zen koan-esque business strategies as title cards. I don't know much about the real life Phil Knight but the film portrays him a bit unevenly, making him out to be both a bit of a maverick-guru as well as kind of a dippy hack. It wasn't clear if I was meant to see the title cards as sage advice responsible for the unbridled success of Nike the company or if my initial eye-rolling reaction to them was in fact correct. Either way, it was a small directorial or editorial decision that I thought added very little to the end product.
I went in thinking, "Okay, it's a free movie, it only has to be worth the couple of hours" and I walked out thinking, "That was more than just worth the time, I genuinely enjoyed that." I recommend the movie, it doesn't have anything particularly revelatory to say or an edgy take on a particular moment that matters mostly to sports fans, shoe collectors, and I guess Nike fans, but it's a well crafted film that provides great entertainment value, even if it weren't free.
