PROJECT FREELANCER IS THE BEST. at least, that’s what the internet says. they’ve been at the top of pro league for the past two years, but every dynasty has to end at some point. or that’s what their competitors say, anyway. –––– but they’re not the only ones out there who enjoy the game: enter the casual players of THE BLOOD GULCH CREW, a group of online friends who don’t see halo as a major competition. in fact, they hardly take it seriously at all.

this verse is based heavily on THIS au idea, with the addition of freelancers. it’s open to all kinds of hilarity and outrageous ideas –– house parties, dating, how high is too high to play halo, donut’s cam shows.

YOU MUST BE EIGHTEEN TO JOIN. this is a household of sloppy assholes. there will be drugs, alcohol, sexual situations. on top of that, i expect you to be able to conduct yourself as an adult.

NO OUT OF CHARACTER DRAMA. don’t kill my vibe. i won’t tolerate it, it’s not fun for anyone. if you have a problem with someone talk to them. if you’re a problem, you will be kicked from the verse. ( don’t be a dick. )

Prologue

it was always just the two of you. there were others, sure, but in the end it was just you and him. He was the only one that never left you. Alexei was there, and your parents loved all three of their children, but they had other things to occupy their time.

however, this made things… complicated. even when he was your best friend, he also managed to be your worst enemy. you loved him, but you hated being compared to him. You wanted to be your own person, you wanted to be yourself, not just Iakov’s shadow. 

Chapter I

you got your wish after the accident, in a sick sense. you weren’t just his shadow. you were the troublemaker, the drunk. you were your father’s daughter, and you hated it.

you wanted to run, but you couldn’t leave Iakov. not with how Alexei treated him, not with how everyone stared at you both. so you stayed for him. he pushed you through getting your GED, he pushed you into leaving the state with him. he is your life support. 

Chapter II

 the new place is strange, but you have each other again. this time though, you also have a game system that one of your new coworkers showed you. it’s nice, to say the least. you’re better when you’re drunk, and you’re at your best when your twin finally decides to join you.

just like in life, in the game he has your back. you’re a force to be reckoned with when he’s by your side, and one of your new friends has taken notice.

Epilogue

 he seems happier here, and you can’t exactly complain either. your old gaming friends have given you a home, and while your roommate sucks, you love these people. you have a good team going, a few conventions and competitions here and there to keep you focused, and enough money to buy booze when you want it. you just need to make sure you keep winning.

PROLOGUE

you live a life not allowed to think of yourself. you’re responsible for the lives around you, after all. your depressed mother, your two little sisters… you have to take care of the four of you, or else you’ll have to live with your dad again. he’s not a bad man by any means, but if you weren’t there, who would take care of your mom?

you don’t get to do it as much as you like, but you adore playing games. it’s the time when you can zone out, and often times keep your sisters entertained at the same time.

CHAPTER I

your mother finally seemed to be getting better. you’re surprised to find out she’s marrying a man that you’ve never met before. he’s the reason she’s so happy now. it’s good, and it’s nice to see her smile for the first time in a while, but it makes you wonder what your purpose is now, if not as a caretaker for your mother and now teen aged sisters.

you feel a distinct loneliness in the months before you’re approached by an elite team of halo players, and are told that you would be a good member of that team. it would mean leaving your small hometown of lead, south dakota for austin, texas, and leaving the sisters that basically saw you more as their mother than their sister behind.

longing for more, you take that chance.

CHAPTER II

if a younger you saw you now, you doubted you would’ve even been able to recognize yourself. the happiness you felt was something like no other. perhaps it was a fool’s bliss, but you’re satisfied with what you have. friends, and a boyfriend! you honestly never thought you would be able to have a social life like this. 

you only wish you were a bit more skilled, like your friends.

EPILOGUE

you think things are still going fairly well. still there are things bothering you. you don’t want to talk about it, but it leaves you anxious over every wrong move you make. occasionally, you cry at night at the mere thought of it happening again. ultimately, you don’t feel like it’s important, however. just help your team win, and things will be okay.

PROLOGUE

you play halo from day one, as not even a teenager. you play it with your friends, your sisters, and even make more friends through it. it’s a serious shock when you find out that people are able to play it competitively. you grin, and want nothing more than to be able to do that.

you round up some of your real life and online friends to conjure up a viable team. you all do your best over the years to rise up the ranks.

CHAPTER I

you’re up there. you’re not the best, but boy are you regarded with high praise. “the insurrectionists” feel unbeatable. you make a new friend in your free time, a young woman named larkin. she’s damn well nearly better than you are, and you offer her a spot on your team.

she declines, and makes the vague mention of another group. while you’re disappointed, you still wish her the best. you stay friends, but contact strains.

you see her in person for the first time, facing off against her and her team from “project freelancer.”

CHAPTER II

the rivalry becomes a little more. while you’re generally a good sport, you want to impress larkin. you want to make her envious, and perhaps even regret not coming over to your team. 

EPILOGUE

you and the girl you pine after remain on good terms, though you and her teammates definitely don’t see eye to eye. you’re not sure whether you truly dislike them, or whether you’re just playing up the rivalry, but boy does the anger sometimes feel real. you aren’t an angry guy by any means, but sometimes -- sometimes those guys just push you.

prologue

You started with a well enough life in the U.K., with a well enough home in a well enough neighborhood. Your parents were big on humour and having fun, constantly encouraging you and making sure that you had a fun time making friends and being social with others for a good few years for your childhood. For a time, it was a nice six years of your life. 

Suddenly your father starts to come home later and later, only giving a simple sorry as an explanation to his increasingly frequent absences. He continues to repeat the word sorry until it ultimately loses its value to you, and becomes an empty word with no real meaning behind it. It’s also the last word you hear from him before he leaves you and your mom, only leaving the large amount of debt he collected as something to remember him by. Having few other choices, your mother sells the house along with what belonged to you and her , and the two of you move to the United States to live with her grandparents in Wyoming.

chapter i

You were far from your home and your friends you knew, your mother was frantic to get a job to help do her part while her parents watch over you until you can get into a new school.  They’d mostly have you past the time with all types of jokes, but the knock knock jokes they’d give you were always your favorite. After a certain amount of time, you started to spread around your own variants of the joke, though it wasn’t often appreciated by the time you got back into school. There were two other ways that you were given to kill time, one was simply reading a book, the other was playing on the console that was given to you as a gift when you first came to the house. 

You took to both almost immediately, but the console seems to take more of your time. As time passes on you seem to get more and more into all sorts of video games, but first person shooters seemed to grab you for reasons you can’t explain. Whatever they were, they certainly eased you into the fact you were in a new country and had to start all over again because your father left.

chapter ii

Halo: CE  and the original Xbox came out when you were twelve and you feel nothing but joy when you play them. You take to camping and sniping quickly, mostly because it frustrated other players, but also the fact that it allowed you to be further away from those you’d kill off with a clean headshot. Years go by and as more Halo games get pumped out, the more you get into it. You continue to practice your aim for sniping, and decide to send insincere apologies to your kills to rub salt in the wound. Soon it becomes less about how you played the game and more about your side winning. 

You play as much as you can on the weekends, and you do your best to balance it out with your educational studies. You’ve gotten used to your life in America, though still have a distinct British accent and use English slang due to your mother’s and grandparents’ influence. This is not something that escaped viewers as you decided to record yourself in Halo and post your accomplishments on Youtube. The recordings went on from your days in high school to the day you graduated college with a Bachelor’s.

epilogue

Your skills have eventually landed you a team, a team that you are a few years older than, but a team nonetheless. Your mother and grandparents congratulate one last time you before you move to the house in Austin. You are team Project Freelancer’s official sniper, staying back and picking off the enemy before they knew what hit them and moving before they can find you. In the game, you tend to work pretty well with them most of the time, though it doesn’t necessarily translate outside the game. It also doesn’t help you tend to be distant and snarkish towards them, but you figure you didn’t necessarily need to be friends to work together.

PROLOGUE

even when you had no one, when you had nothing, you had your twin. you had a brother. you had parents that loved you, that was true, but they weren’t always there. there was work, or social lives, or emergencies, but it was family.

eventually though that went away too. when your parents died, you followed the only place you could, with your sister. she was your twin after all, where were you supposed to go? you never had much for direction, short of enlisting you barely manage to get your high school diploma. it’s not that you’re dumb, you’re not lazy, you just lack direction; an irony that becomes apparent when people will call you north in a few years.

CHAPTER I

you wind up having to find ways to make ends meet. at first the goal is simple, you need to get the two of you out of providence. there’s too many memories of the car crash, you have to go over the bridge, the one which you lost almost everything on, to go to the store. your world becomes a cruel reminder of the mistakes you made. your sister needs out too, the place is suffocating her just as much as it taunts you. you turn to your uncle, one back home, and he helps you to make the money to get out.

you promise yourself once you’re out, you’ll stop this. you don’t know that the connections you wind up making will serve you well later on in life.

CHAPTER II

it’s years later and you’re out; you’re free. you live in austin now, in a house with the people who kept you sane for the last few years. you’ve done good, made a family out of the friends your sister introduced you to. you made a job out of it, real money. not something you have to figure out how to launder. she’s here too, and everything is great. you’ve got fame, a small bit of fortune, and a new family to call your own. while you promised yourself to get out of the life you were forced to endure, you find yourself brought back in. a little cash on the side, and a score for your new friends, your family. they need it anyhow, so what’s the harm? never mind the legality of it, at least you know they’re getting good stuff, the stuff that is safe(r).

Jake doesn’t expect to see much of anyone while he’s in the waiting room. He makes sure it’s plenty of distance away from Church’s room, but a place that Wash can find him in when he’s ready to go. When he looks up however, he’s looking right at York.

And he freezes.

Like a deer in the headlights he doesn’t move, doesn’t flinch, just watches the other drink what had to be coffee. He hasn’t noticed him yet, but knows that if he gets up the other will see him. This was so not worth the eighteen dollars in parking. If he doesn’t move, he’ll be trapped, but he can’t breathe; physically can’t will his body to move at all.

He doesn’t want to cause a scene. But he doesn’t want to see him, talk to him, be near him, nothing. Why did this all have to hurt so much?

PROJECT FREELANCER IS THE BEST. at least, that’s what the internet says. they’ve been at the top of pro league for a long time, but every dynasty has to end at some point. or that’s what their competitors say, anyway. the team lives together, works together, plays together, but dynamics change with the addition of a new member.

but they’re not the only ones out there who enjoy the game: enter the casual players of TEAM RED and TEAM BLUE, a group of online friends who don’t see halo as a major competition. in fact, they hardly take it seriously at all.

this verse is based heavily on THIS au idea, with the addition of freelancers. church is carolina’s brother, and he meets tex because he hangs around the freelancers ( he auditioned for the team but didn’t make the cut, but he’s always hanging out with them. ) church often plays online campaigns with the reds and blues. it’s open to all kinds of hilarity and outrageous ideas –– house parties, dating, how high is too high to play halo, donut’s cam shows.

PROLOGUE

you’ve been finding ways to cope your whole life. you wear your attitude like armor, but it was all that could protect you from a father who didn’t care and a mother who’s shadow you were stuck in. ( he could never love you as much as he loved her. YOU WOULD NEVER BE YOUR MOTHER. ) it was worse after your mother left –– it was easier to say she left than accept that she was dead. but no matter how you spun it, it made your father a monster. your baby brother taught you how to play games when you were both younger, and with your whole life going to shit, it seemed like the only thing either of you had left. ––– but where your brother used it to make friends, you used it to demolish the memory of you mother. to be better than she ever was. you got mean, you got distant and turned to the world of COMPETITIVE GAMING.

CHAPTER I

you both SUFFERED. you withdrew to your room, spoke only to the voices inside your headset. until the day you found your brother, never realizing just how low the both of you had reached. you don’t know how to handle your emotions –– you don’t know HOW TO DEAL with the idea of losing anyone else ––– you yell, you punch him, you beg him not to do it again. it only makes the rest of your life harder. ( always worrying about leaving him alone with the monster... )

CHAPTER II

it was your father’s idea, and you know he only cared because it made him money. your online friends became an official team: PROJECT FREELANCER. he bought you all a massive house in the heart of austin and soon enough you were all sponsored and climbing to the top of the league. ( you felt like you were THE BEST IN THE WORLD ) your team was in sync, and while your brother found his own circle, you were happy to see he fit into your world as well. it seemed like everything was perfect, like you were all untouchable ––– and then she showed up and everything fell apart.

EPILOGUE

you two just couldn’t get along. it didn’t help that your brother was IN LOVE. the team fell apart, everyone going their separate ways. the twins stuck around, so you’re not completely alone in the team house, and york at least still comes to visit from time to time. ( and face times when he misses phyllis. ) you haven’t been competing lately, though you still play. mostly with your brothers friends, and it’s infuriating how much they don’t take halo seriously. you make appearances at cons and join your brother in videos from time to time. –––– you feel a little lost, but things are okay.
