Stan Pines: A Masterclass in Character Writing and Symbolism AKA Stan is Godly, Literally (GF Writing Analysis Pt. 5)
If you're interested in reading a similar writing analysis on Ford Pines, please visit this page.
I've wanted to write a post on Stan for a long time, because I'm going to make a bold claim: he is THE best written character in Gravity Falls. I literally have never been able to find a flaw with his writing, and the reason? Not only does he have the markers of quality I mentioned in my post about Ford's writing (a want, need, character arc, realistic flaws), but...
I would also argue he is THE main protagonist and hero of Gravity Falls if I had to pin it down to just one, and his character arc matches the external conflict, that being Bill Cipher and the theme of growing up vs. staying in childhood and ego vs. selflessness, in ways that are just - and I'm not exaggerating - poetic. And the best part is, he had a lot more time and attention in the spotlight in the show than Ford, so everything I mentioned in the other post that was good about Ford's writing, ramp that up x100 for Stan.
His character also touches on multiple other fantastic themes: breaking generational trauma, healing broken familial relationships that seem unfixable, redemption, the misunderstanding of the family "fuckup" (although Stan is not that in the least, but that's part of his character arc), positive masculinity, true brotherhood, self-love, self-identity, and probably a million others I'm missing and will find out even just as I write this.
As for the godly part, well... you'll just have to read to the end. And no, I'm not kidding or exaggerating, either.
Okay, okay, gushing aside, let's get to the analysis. I'm not sure this will be as neatly structured as Ford's was, but there are just so many damn good things about Stan's writing that it's hard to stick to just one point. Let us begin.
Stan's Backstory: I Am Not Ford and That's Bad + Protecting/Providing for Family > Everything Else
So as I discussed in my post about Ford linked above, much of Stan's childhood revolved around Ford. His entire existence as a child was summed up by one question: how do I compare to Ford? This is especially emphasized in how their father, Filbrick, treated them. One of the end credits ciphers in the show reads as follows:
"A STUBBORN TOUGH NEW JERSEY NATIVE, FILBRICK WASN’T TOO CREATIVE, HAVING TWINS WAS NOT HIS PLAN, SO HE JUST SHRUGGED AND NAMED BOTH STAN."
Haha, very funny. But OUCH. Imagine knowing that your whole name is your name, was because your father only expected one son and was too lazy to come up with anything else. So literally, Stan doesn't even have his own name - his own identity - technically. Stan also was apparently the second twin born, so came in "second" even from birth, and being Ford's (either identical or very similar fraternal) twin, well... it's hard for someone to untie their identity from their brother's with those factors surrounding them as a kid.
There are many other factors that illustrate my point (Ford got Filbrick's name as his middle name, the way Filbrick literally put Stan on the lawn for sale as a kid for failing a test, etc). All in all, Ford receives their father's love, Stan does not, although we could argue that this isn't that great for Ford, not really, as I did in my post on his writing. Because it's a love that comes with a, "I'd also like to use you." attached (just like Bill, gee).
All in all, it's very obvious from all these context clues that Ford was the beloved one, and Stan was the unexpected one, from birth to the end of Gravity Falls, where he uses that to his advantage - albeit in a different context - to defeat Bill Cipher.
Worse yet, Stan happened to have a twin that was extremely smart and talented in a way that was easily noticed. Ford is a Golden Child, as I described in his own writing analysis post, and siblings of the golden child like Stan? Well... the other sibling(s) are often the Scapegoat. As the source in the last sentence states, the Scapegoat is "often blamed for family mistakes, discarded, neglected, and has been gaslighted into believing it was their fault. The scapegoated child is usually assigned at a young age and often carries this role through to adulthood and never loses the unfortunate title.". This can highly affect the Scapegoat's self-esteem, even into adulthood.
This page also covers the Golden Child vs. Scapegoat dynamic. Pay attention to these quotes from this source:
"You are the one the parent will come after when things are going wrong."
"You are subjected to their emotional and verbal abuse the most."
"You may even feel like you need to fix your broken family."
Also, take into account these panels from the comic, Lost Legends, released after Gravity Falls ended:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yikes. A child doesn't say these things unless a parent has taught them that everything they do is wrong and they are lesser than their sibling. This kid's noticed how Filbrick looks with pride at Ford, but not him. And here's the thing: the item Stan stole in this comic that made Filbrick mad? Stan did it to clean it to make his father proud. Sound familiar? In the events of Gravity Falls, Stan works on the portal for thirty years and gets Ford back, and he gets... yelled at for it. Stan always has good intentions. Although, Ford has a point in the above comic panel: Stan does take shortcuts that get him into trouble. He did almost get jailed by the US government and end the universe to save Ford.
But this is a consistent theme with Stan's character throughout the show. Even WE as the audience first see Stan the way his family did - a conniving scoundrel and money-grubbing criminal - but through the events of the show, just as Stan's family starts to realize it, even when Stan does things that seem bad, like stealing radioactive waste, working on a portal described as a potential cause of the end of the world, has a ton of different identities, etc... we find out Stan had good intentions all along.
Even Stan's greediness? That need for money? That also stemmed from the same good intentions, because how ELSE was he going to afford Ford's mortgage to keep the Shack in order to keep working on bringing him home? It was also likely something ingrained into him from when he was kicked out. Because Filbrick told him, basically, until you make us the money that Ford losing his chance at West Coast Tech cost us, GTFO. Literally. :'(
So Stan... really IS not what he seems. He seems like a fuckup, a criminal, a liar, and a greedy conman. But really... he's a family defender, protector, and supporter. Want to have your mind blown? Intentional or not, let's look at the very first scene we see Stan in in the series:
Tumblr media
"Oh look, I'm a monster!"
Tumblr media
"Just kidding, I'm not. I'm someone else under what looks like a monster."
Yes. Stan's whole character arc is foreshadowed in like... three seconds in the first episode. The very first time we see him. Not just his arc, but also his role as someone that seems deceptively evil but is actually good. And not just the arc that Ford and Dipper take from distrusting Stan to finally understanding his good intentions, but also the realization WE as viewers have about Stan as we follow the story. Additionally - which we'll get into later - it's symbolic of Stan's internal character arc he takes across the series of realizing he himself isn't the monster that his father planted in his mind as a child, but a good person worthy of love.
All of that... in a few seconds of animation. If that wasn't intentional, then DAMN did the writing gods smile on the Gravity Falls team the day they planned this scene. Back to the point about who Stan really is: the family "fuckup" (not really, but we'll get to that later), and a family defender and protector. This is the true core of Stan's character throughout the whole series. Not only was he Ford's defender as a child, protecting him from bullies, but you know those scenes the fandom universally agrees on were Stan at his most badass? Ahem...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Everything I've worked for, everything I care about, it's all for this family!"
Tumblr media
"Turn around and look at me, you one-eyed demon! You're a real wise-guy, but you made one fatal mistake: you messed with my family."
Yeah. Look at what Stan is doing in EVERY single one of these scenes: protecting his family. And as bad as Filbrick was, just like I explained in the post I made about Ford's writing... Filbrick also passed down some things to Stan that make him the hero he is. And it's also stuff that Stan passes down to Dipper:
Tumblr media
Yeah, it kinda sucked for Dipper at the time. Was it a perfect way of teaching a child to be tough? Er, no, although another mark of a well-written character is that they can make mistakes and have flaws; Stan's not perfect. And the fandom has criticized the way Stan passed down this lesson to Dipper, because it can be considered very similar to the way Filbrick passed it down to Stan. But look what it did: when the world fights and threatens his family, just like Stan, Dipper fights back. With punches, too:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So... to summarize this first part: Stan was taught from childhood "I'm not Ford, and that's bad. I am a monster unworthy of love that always messes up.", and his role is a family protector, which started with how he protected Ford from bullies as a child. This is the core of his self-identity. So let's get into the writing techniques that make a well-written character that I discussed in Ford's writing analysis post...
Stan's Core Want vs. Need
I'll quote my explanation of want vs. need from my own post on Ford I made about a year ago:
"When I took writing classes in college (and over years of writing in general and drooling over writing advice podcasts and blogs), I found that the best method for me, personally, when it comes to crafting characters is to focus on two major things:
1. Their want.
2. Their need.
On the surface, these look like the same things, but in character writing, they can be vastly different. For example, say that you have a character that greatly desires fame and recognition. They want these things.
But what’s the real reason behind it? Is it because they had a parent that was famous and want to live up to their example? Is it because they want to be adored by people? Is it because they were told they’d never amount to anything by someone and want to prove them wrong?
This real reason behind it all is the core need. Yes, they want fame and recognition, but they need it because, say, they have low self-esteem and need copious amounts of outside validation to boost it.
Tied to this need is usually a backstory reason (sometimes called their wound). Say your hypothetical character was bullied a lot as a child. Or abused by a parent. Etc. Whatever the wound was, it caused a big, painful hole in their heart that they try to fill and fix with their want.
So they go on a journey. The want is often the external journey. The need is often the core journey / character arc. Our example character seeks fame and recognition on an external journey, but deep inside, they realize they need something else, which is to understand that their past trauma/wound doesn’t define them, and fame and recognition will not be the balm they expect it will be. Often, they realize they had what they needed all along. They grow past their flaws associated with their seeking this want through understanding and instead pursuing the need."
I'll summarize Stan's character writing using these concepts right here, like I did for Ford in his analysis post:
“I want to be Ford because I want to be loved like he is, and I want to protect those I care about and do the right thing. But what I need is to realize is that who I am - not Ford, but Stan - was good enough all along, proven by how I've always protected those I care about, and I never NEEDED to be Ford in the first place. This stems from a wound from my childhood where I was a scapegoat child treated like a fuckup who never did anything right and could never measure up to Ford, and was conditioned to think that being like Ford was a ticket to earn familial love. I had what I needed all along: myself, because I am good enough and worthy of love, despite what my father taught me."
Stan's Arc: I Am Not Ford... and That's Okay
AKA Stan's arc is basically: learning to love yourself and be yourself, even when you were conditioned to think you have no value. Don't believe me? Guess what Stan does for thirty years: pretends to be Ford. And he literally does it by pretending to have died. He "kills" Stanley Pines AKA himself in a staged car crash to become Stanford Pines.
And guess how he defeats Bill? By pretending to be Ford. His greatest weakness is actually his strength, and then he flips it: he reveals to Bill that he's not Ford, he's actually Stan. And THAT'S when the antagonist of Gravity Falls is truly defeated - an antagonist that represents stasis, lack of change, and with The Book of Bill's context, an antagonist that never freed himself from his own past - is when Stan learns to accept himself and admit who he really is and learns to let the past go. And it's telling that this is what he says when he does it:
Tumblr media
"Heh. Guess I was good for something after all." AKA: "Yeah, fuck what Pa said about me."
There it is. The moment of Stan realizing his father was wrong, and he was wrong for thinking himself a fuckup all those years. And this is the expression he pulls at this moment of realization; at the peak of his character arc, all while burning in flames like a phoenix reborn. It sounds corny when I put it that way, but LITERALLY, all the fire symbolism feels like it wasn't foreshadowing Stan's death, but his rebirth as himself after pretending to be Ford all those years. He's not burning who he is, he's burning away who he thought - who he was told - he was. Funny that it takes place in the mind, huh?
Tumblr media
This is the face of a man who is at peace and finally loves himself for the first time in his life. That ain't just his mind burning. That's him punching his demon that's haunted him and his brother their whole lives, protecting his family as always, and, symbolically, punching a demon that represents the show's overall antagonist of the shackles of staying stuck in the past, forgiveness, and the value of moving on. He literally punches the antagonist - staying stuck in the past - to pieces and THAT'S when he wins.
Also, can we talk about how Bill and Filbrick share color schemes, and Filbrick even has a brick-like pattern in his suit (also, I mean... come on, he's got 'brick' in his name)? I'll let you make your own conclusion about what that means for Stan's character arc:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's also telling that Bill Cipher's backstory is that he burned his home dimension and loved ones - including his family - to ashes. The Axolotl - Gravity Falls' equivalent of basically God, from what I can tell - says himself about Bill in one of the books released outside of the show:
"Saw his own dimension burn. Misses home and can't return. Says he's happy. He's a liar. Blame the arson for the fire."
Bill misses home. He wants the past and to hold onto his family, just like Stan and Mabel do. Isn't it funny how whenever Bill shows up... time stops?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And look what Bill says in Weirdmageddon: "This party never stops! Time is dead and meaning has no meaning!"
Time stopped. He just wants fun. He's almost like a child that never grew up. And... look at what it was that Stan wrecked in A Tale of Two Stans as a teenager:
Tumblr media
A perpetual motion machine. That thing that's not supposed to stop, just like time. Stan 'breaking' time by wanting to hold Ford in the past, with him, instead of leaving him to go to college while Stan was stuck in the past/Glass Shard Beach? That's what broke their brotherhood.
But what makes Stan a hero, and Bill a villain, is that he lets go of the past and his childhood. Bill never does. And he's defeated when Stan lets go of the past, something Bill never did. Why? Because he has family to make facing the future easier. He has familial and self love. Bill doesn't, because he killed his own. (Sorry, got off track again, but Stan's arc and story ties so deeply to the other characters' and the main themes that it's hard not to take some detours, because it illustrates just how well-written Stan is. Gravity Falls' story IS his story.).
Wanna know something cute? Wanna know how Stan realized he had worth during that scene after he defeats Bill? Why I'm betting the show runners showed Stan clutching to a picture of Dipper and Mabel as this happens? I'll give you one guess why Dipper and Mabel are so important to Stan, and why he clutches to their photo even as his mind is burning apart in the finale:
They're the first family members since Ford (whose love he'd lost) who loved Stan for who he was, not for who they thought he should have been. Mabel trusting Stan in Not What He Seems is basically the first damn time Stan's heard in thirty plus years from a family member that, "Hey, I trust you have good intentions and aren't just a lying fuckup. You're not a monster. You're not what you seem.".
Also, he's protecting his family. That always makes him happy, too, of course.
Ego Death and the "Stan is Godly" Part
Yep, we're taking this analysis post train all the way to "damn this is deep and PrettyinPwn is likely crazy for noticing it" station. The only reason I'm tacking this part on is that I saw a Q&A with Hirsch recently that sparked my attention. He was on his The Book of Bill tour, and someone asked if there was anyone more powerful than Bill in Gravity Falls lore. Of course, Hirsch said the Axolotl, but what he said about what Bill vs. the Axolotl stands for caught my eye:
The video in question. The question and answer starts around 21:22. The quote I want to point out is, though, is what we learn about these two beings:
Hirsch: "Bill's weaknesses in terms of his overconfidence, his ego, and his lack of ability to focus on one thing at a time are things that a being that has no ego, thinks on a long scale, and does have empathy is actually stronger than him because of those things."
So when we boil the conflict of Bill vs. the Axolotl down to simple terms - what makes evil vs. good in the Gravity Falls universe - is this: ego and selfishness vs. no ego and empathy.
Guess which characters wrestle with these themes? The correct answer is: ALL of them. But especially Stan and Ford. This is really what their conflict is about at the core. They both struggled with ego and selfishness, and that's when - in the story - they lose most. But they win when they choose selflessness and empathy. When they... drum roll, please... partake in ego death.
Well, let's describe an ego death. First, we must define what an ego is (source for all of the following quotes):
Ego: "The ego is a sense of self that you develop at a young age." and, "-relates to your feelings about your own importance and abilities.".
*cough "I'm the family fuckup and poor man's version of Ford because that's what people taught me to believe in my youth." cough*
And an ego death "-is the (often instantaneous) realization that you are not truly the things you've identified with, and the "ego" or sense of self you've created in your mind is a fabrication. In some instances, it can offer a profound feeling of peace and connectedness with all that is, as the walls of separation the ego creates come crumbling down."
*cough "I'm not Ford's poor copy, I'm not a fuckup, I have worth, and I realize this in my literal mind as I pull this expression-
Tumblr media
-of total peace as the walls of my mind literally BURN around me" cough*
And, "When one comes through on the other side having released all the things they've identified with, with only their true spirit left, Kaiser says, they begin to live from a place of pure love."
*cough "I'll hold a picture of the ones I love and realize self-love as my mind burns around me because this is who I really am: a man who protects and loves my family and my family loves me" cough*
Cheeky asides, well... aside, are you seeing what I'm getting at, folks? Look, I can't prove that Hirsch and crew intended all this, but in my opinion: you wanna know why there are so many gags of Stan or versions of him melting or burning in the show? Why fire is such an important symbol surrounding him? Why there are so many times he's killed his own identity and became a "new" man again and again and again, be it as a young grifter, or as a drifter who became his brother to bring him back again, or as an old man who "killed" his own mind to save the world and his memories returned?
Because it's ego death. The rebirth of true self from a lie you were living. That's literally what Stan's arc is a metaphor for. Even better, he reaches his character arc's zenith when he does this:
Tumblr media
That's not an old man punching a stupid little bastard. That's an old man punching what threatens his family, punching his own past, punching his own demons, punching his brother's demon, punching his prior identity, and - given that we know that Bill is a symbol of ego now - punching the personification of literal ego and letting it burn. There are, let's count, seven symbolic meanings in that punch at the very least. Maybe eight if you count that the rightside-up triangle is the alchemical symbol for fire, and by Stan beating it, it's symbolism of his defeating the fire that's eating his memories AKA why he gets his memories back. I could find more, probably.
And yes, the chubby old conman we love so much - and is the opposite of spiritual both in action and in Hirsch's words (he's said Stan is an atheist as an adult) literally has a character arc where he attains spiritual enlightenment that aligns with the god of the Gravity Falls universe - the Axolotl, who has no ego as Hirsch said - hidden under many layers of symbolism. I don't know if Hirsch and the writing crew planned this with Stan, but holy damn... this is what I meant when I said that Stan is the best written character in Gravity Falls, even if this part was unintentional. There are just so many layers of meaning here.
And the best part? Stan was this hero all along. Everything we cheer him on for - be it punching zombies to protect his niblings or spending three decades of his life trying to get his brother back - is when he's being selfless and empathetic. We love Stan as a character because he has a big heart. He's a good person because, as we described above, he is - through beating ego in a universe where its god represents a lack of ego - godly.
No, fangirls, put the sexy Hunkle art down. I mean literally spiritually godly in the Gravity Falls universe, at least in the way good and evil is portrayed in the themes and worldbuilding. No, I'm not exaggerating, either. Let's return to that quote about the Axolotl's powers and why he's stronger than Bill:
"-that a being that has no ego, thinks on a long scale, and does have empathy is actually stronger than him (Bill) because of those things."
Well... guess what Stan does? He loses his ego so hard he regularly kills his own identity multiple times in his life and goes through a symbolic ego death, he thinks on a long scale (thirty years long), and is empathetic and selfless to the point of sacrifice. And the Axolotl in real life lore? Xolotl, the god of Aztec myth? Guess what he's a god of (source):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why I highlighted "vulture"? Honestly, this is just a neat little thing I wanted to point out, and was a part of a massive theory I was writing about Stan and Bill that sadly never came to fruition (although I may return to it someday), but here's a hint: what was Stan and Ford's school mascot in New Jersey?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'll let you take away from all the above what you will. Let's just say: there are a LOT of similarities between Stan and the Axolotl and its real life god counterpart, Xolotl. Does that that mean he's literally the Axolotl when I say he's godly in the Gravity Falls setting? Maybe not.
Here's one last odd something that caught my eye. This is also a leftover from that theory I mentioned above, but I'll just... leave this here, because I don't think anyone else has ever pointed it out before and it expands on what I've been talking about:
Tumblr media
Stan in the opening. The first time we see this guy, technically. He's sitting in his favorite chair. And as we all know, he turns to look at something. But just where the hell does he turn to look?
Tumblr media
Half of you are like, "Well, what? What's he looking at?". There's a blue glow to his right, and you know what that blue glow is? The tank, which happens to have...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Could be a coincidence, maybe unintentional, but it's... kind of odd, not gonna lie. To have a character that embodies the traits of the setting's god look over at the setting's god the first time viewers see him. Just... a bit strange... and Xolotl was also a shapeshifter god, and given that Stan goes through so many identities in his life... and axolotls are able to regenerate limbs and so are a symbol of healing and rebirth like Stan - whose whole story is about healing and having multiple "rebirths" - is...
Anyways, I've gotten far off track mentioning things from that theory just for fun that I never posted. I may still post it, so I won't spoil all of it or list any more of the very odd coincidences between Stan and the Axolotl, but all you need to know from this post is that Stan shares a lot of similarities with his setting's god in symbolism, and embodies the power of the Axolotl AKA godliness in the Gravity Falls universe: no ego, selflessness, and knowing how to play a long game, because those are exactly the traits he uses to defeat Bill, as well as the traits that help him resolve his character arc wound.
So... now what?
I'm not really sure what to put here, to be honest. This post was a lot more meandering than Ford's was, but that's because there are so many different aspects of Stan's writing that are amazing, especially in symbolism. I hope it was coherent and made sense. A part of me was considering leaving out the ego death and Axolotl parts, but I thought it interesting enough to keep in. Let me know your thoughts!

august 2024 episode of octavinelle + 4koma update
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You know the drill by now!
Spoilers for the 4koma and the Episode of Octavinelle chapter 12 below the cut. As a reminder, the Episode of Savanaclaw won’t be updating again until winter.
Tumblr media
🫵 THERE THEY ARE…
THE SMOOTH CRIMINALS…
The poses in this opening page are so good; Leona sat all lax like a boss who knows who’s large and in charge, Ruggie leaning against the chair and swinging the keys to the vault around on one finger… The posing perfectly captures their personalities and roles in relationship to one another.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once again, Azul makes many fantastically desperate and despair-filled expressions this installment 😭
Falling to his knees???? Laying flat on the floor??? Man is UNMATCHED when it comes to theatrics.
Tumblr media
I like this shot of Azul and Leona’s gazes lining up; it really helps give you the sense of two rivals sizing each other up.
(Side note: you can also tell how much painstaking detail the artists went through to include their eye makeup in these close-ups. Hats off to them for the extra effort, it looks great!)
Tumblr media
… WHY DiD THEY hAvFTA mAkE HIM So smUGHERE 💀
Tumblr media
damn i wish i was that stack of contracts
… I mean what
sorry
Sorry
SORRY
I got distracted there, what were we talking about again????
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AYO they always make Leona casting King’s Roar look so darn cool in the manga 😭
My favorite panel in this sequence has to be the one with the text bubbles. He looks so nonchalant and a little stern as he speaks the chant… The shadows on his face add a lot to the atmosphere of it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This chapter is the part where Leona gets to sanding Azul’s hard work away! Look at how beautifully drawn Azul’s reaction is ✨
The particle-y effect of the contracts melting into sand is nice 😌 It feeds Azul’s tears… Tasty meal…
Tumblr media
MOU YADA IN MANGA FORM IS PEAK
lmao Azul for real threw a tantrum, flailing his limbs and everything 🤡 Love that even Leona and Ruggie have NO idea how they should respond to this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh no, here comes the OB…
The anguish Azul’s experiencing is really coming through. He’s sweating so much and his entire face is so. Er… for lack of a better term, twisted.
I think seeing the blot leaking out from each of them helps to illustrate that they’re truly being overwhelmed and consumed by their own inner darkness. It’s sad to see 😔
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We cut back to Yuuta and co. squaring off against the twins!
I wanted to point out and comment on these parts with Jack. He’s not a character that I usually pay much attention to, but I gotta commend him for fighting back so hard and trying to shield the picture even when he’s clearly got no chance of winning. Jack bearing his fangs at Floyd with pupils contracted… 🫶 Very good and loyal pupper! I get the Jack appeal now, lol
Tumblr media
I LOVE THIS
It reminds me of the similar Azul-Leona framing earlier in the chapter, though with a different context. I like that this shows how the twins are in sync and coming to the same terrible conclusion.
Not long after, they rush to Azul’s side—which makes me think that these two worry for his wellbeing 😭 THEY DONmT SAY IT OUT LOUD BUT THEY CARE
Tumblr media
Oh yeah, here it comes… OB Azul has arrived!! 👀
I MEAN YEAH it’s not good for his health, but I’m so hyped for the battle and flashbacks to his childhood! Baby!Azul shall NOT escape our sight…
Tumblr media
The 4koma this month centers on Jack, Vargas, and others (Jade, Kalim, Deuce) talking about using transformation magic for racing.
dhejeveiwhwuow I would say more, but I actually didn’t find this 4koma that remarkable. It’s a generally the boys chatting about animals and their different activities they excel at.

Icarus Part 25
Damn. I actually hate seeing that number up there. Because that means it's done. Eight months, twenty-five chapters, 52895 words, and one hell of a ride.
I'll start posting the sequel on Tuesday, and will post Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays until it's done. I hope to get it done before October's end. But that's not looking likely at the moment.
But once it's done, I will post the epilogue. This was actually written first and was a way for me to flesh out the band members. Then I just wanted to dive right in to writing the full story. A link to the original idea here.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 Part 8 Part 9 Part 10 Part 11 Part 12 Part 13 Part 14 Part 15 Part 16 Part 17 Part 18 Part 19 Part 20 Part 21 Part 22 Part 23 Part 24
~
The rest of the American tour while it had its ups and downs was pretty much was uneventful. When Steve got back to Cali, he got some actual therapy from someone Gareth’s therapist, Dr. Sam Owens recommended to him. To not only deal with the abandonment issues left by his parents and Nancy but to help deal with the sudden onslaught of fame.
It was going well.
It was the therapist that had strongly recommended going on the vacation with his two best friends. That really helped put his life in perspective.
They were out celebrating Gareth’s one year of being sober and everyone had been invited. Jeff, Brian, and Eddie, of course. Even Vickie made it out. Dustin, Will, Mike, Max, Lucas, Ellie, Hopper, Robin, all the members of The Fallen, sans persona. Gareth had really become friends with all of them, yes even Steve. Gareth and Shane became really close. It was nice to see.
“Cheers!” Jeff said holding up their glasses of sparkling apple cider that they had all brought to share.
“Cheers!” the rest of them cried, clinking their glasses together.
They had rented out a nice surf and turf restaurant for the occasion and everyone was catching up. The owner was a friend of Jonathan’s, Argyle Rivera. He had gotten his start with a pizza food truck and it just exploded.
“So what did you and Mike decide to do?” Steve asked when there was a lull in the conversation. “I know you two weren’t sure the last time I was in Hawkins.”
Mike and Will shared a bashful look before Mike said, “I wrote a children’s book and Will illustrated it. We sent it out to a couple of different publishers so we’re just waiting to hear back.”
“That’s amazing!” Dustin cried. “You guys are going to be awesome.”
“Yeah,” Will said brightly. “I finally convinced Jonathan into going in to photography at the local community collage and he’s doing really well.”
“Nancy is going to school, too,” Mike said quietly, knowing how most of the group felt about his sister.
Eddie raised his eyebrows. “Yeah? What is the once great Nancy Wheeler going to be studying?”
Mike perked up a little that someone had taken a interest in what he said. “She’s actually going into journalism. Especially to be a war corespondent. After everything rightfully fell apart after the incident with The Fallen and Corroded Coffin, she took a hard look at her life and decided she hated the person she had become. So she’s been in therapy and has gotten into her dream school of Emerson.”
“That’s good,” Steve said quietly. Robin gave his a hand gentle squeeze and he returned it with a grateful smile.
“What are doing next, Ellie?” Brian asked. “Designing more epic costumes for the rich and famous? I saw that dress you designed for Lupita Nyong’o for the premier of her new movie. That was a gorgeous shade of purple.”
Ellie’s face dimpled in the force of her wide, happy smile. “Something like that. I’m just glad the dress turned out so well. I’ll be heading back to New York, to stay this time. I got a job at a fashion house that I’m really excited for.”
“What about you and Dusty?” Lucas asked, tilting his head. “I thought things were going great.”
Both Dustin and Ellie share a blushing smile.
“We’re still together,” Dustin replied. “I’ll be in Boston and she’ll be in New York. We’ll going to try and make it work.”
Max nodded. “Long distance can suck, but if the other person is worth it you can make it work.” She nudged Lucas’s shoulder and he grinned back.
“So you didn’t get traded to Lakers like you wanted?” Gareth asked Lucas.
He shook his head. “Maybe next year. But in the mean time, Max has a couple interviews at Tony Hawk’s video game company as a mo-cap performer for the female characters in his games.”
Everyone oohed and ahhed and congratulated her.
“I don’t have the job yet,” she muttered, but happily soaked up the attention anyway.
Dustin turned to Steve and Robin. “When are you two going to do something with your lives?”
Eddie winced and Steve and Robin didn’t even have to glance at each other to be suddenly on the same wavelength of doom.
If this was an anime you would have have seen the dark waves behind their heads.
“We make good money doing what we do,” Robin said darkly. “Yeah, it’s a bit jack of all trades, but it’s fun. We’re never stuck doing the same thing. We get travel all over the world. We get to meet famous people and all the perks of fame with the drawbacks of having our privacy invaded on the regular.”
“Jack of all trades, but master of none,” Dustin said to be pedantic. “Don’t you guys want to do something specific, like a teacher or a doctor?”
Robin snorted. “No.”
Chrissy hand covered hers, and Robin gave her a squeeze back. She was fine, just annoyed.
“Yeah,” Steve said. “And I don’t why being a jack of all trades is bad thing. Focusing on one thing is great for the people who can do it, but I love the different jobs. Roadie one tour, PA another, then EMT the next. It’s great.”
Dustin frowned, stabbing his plate with his fork.
“My therapist says people are like plants,” Gareth said, “some people are trees and they grow up slowly. Some are bamboo and in the right environment shoot up super fast. But some people are like periwinkle and grow out sideways. Robin and Steve are like that. It’s still growth, just not the growth you want them to have.”
“I guess,” he huffed. He looked up at Steve. “Are you happy doing what you do?”
Steve and Eddie shared a glance. “Yes, for all its faults, I am very happy.”
He nodded and they went back to celebrating Gareth’s year of sobriety. But under the cover of the loud celebration and raucous laughter, Vickie and Simon chatted quietly to themselves.
~
Steve and Eddie lay on the bed in Eddie’s mansion curled up together after sex.
“What’s wrong?” Eddie asked Steve when he had curled up under his chin and held on tight.
“We were out celebrating,” he murmured, “and I couldn’t even tell them we were in a relationship.”
“Most of the people there already knew, babe,” Eddie murmured. But when Steve didn’t say anything it clicked. “You wanted to tell the kids. Especially after the bomb Mike dropped about Nancy moving on.”
Steve nodded.
Eddie scooted down the bed to look Steve in the eye. “Whatever you do or don’t tell them is entirely up to you I don’t care either way.”
“You don’t care that we’ll never get to go on dates or be seen holding hands or kissing?” Steve asked seriously.
Eddie shook his head. “Do you want to know why?”
“I guess,” Steve said with a half shrug.
“Because when I first got into the music business,” Eddie murmured, “I slept with anyone who would give a passing fancy.”
Steve looked up at him in confusion. “But I thought you already had a crush on me then?”
“I did,” Eddie confirmed. “But here’s the thing, sweetheart, do you know who’s partners get torn apart the most in celebrity relationships?”
Steve shook his head.
“Those with non-famous partners,” Eddie said. “If your partner is anything other than a C or B list celebrity when you’re an A-list, you get called out for ‘slumming it’ and their partners get called all sorts of nasty names, but especially ‘gold digger’. Which is the last thing I wanted for you.”
“Is that why you were okay with being with after you found out I was secretly famous?”
Eddie rose up and tackled Steve into the pillows. “You listen close, Steve Harrington. That was absolutely not why. I didn’t even show up with the flowers intending on confessing anything other than knowing your secret. It was like I suddenly saw all the facets of the diamond I’d been admiring for years and realizing any reason I had to not put myself forward were stupid.”
Steve blinked up at him in awe. “Oh.”
“Yeah, baby, ‘oh’,” Eddie huffed. “Continuing to protect you from the shame and humiliation of the slings and arrows of the media is my mission in life, okay? And if you ever decide to come out, either as bisexual as Steve or as Steve as Abbadon, I will be there for you. One hundred percent.”
Steve’s eyes welled up and he nodded. “Okay.” His lips quivered. “I love you so much. I just want you to be happy.”
Eddie kissed him fiercely. “I know you do and you make me very happy. The Fallen, Abbadon, being closeted? All that? That’s just a part of you that I love.” He bounced onto the bed. “In fact...”
He grabbed his phone and started going through it. “Eureka!” He turned the phone around to a paint of a night, shielding a maiden from the sun and a large crowd of people. This is us, babe. I am the knight and you are my maiden. I won’t get tired, or upset that you need protecting.”
Steve blushed. He sat up and pulled up his knees to his chest. “When we first started coming up with names for us, we didn’t originally all have the same letter.”
Eddie raised his eyebrows. “Wait, really?”
Steve shook his head. “Spence was just Death. Shane was always Astraeus. Simon was struggling with finding a name that fit.”
“And did you have your name picked out?” Eddie asked gently, knowing where this was going.
He pursed his lips and nodded. “I didn’t think we’d make it this far. I really thought we would have crashed and burned by now.” He closed his eyes and hung his head. “Part of the myth with Icarus and the wax wings that people forget was that he was flying all over the place. That if he flied straight and true like his father suggested, he would have survived. But he flew too close to the seas as well as the sun.”
Steve sighed and then looked over at Eddie. “And that’s what I thought I was doing with the band. Flying too low with the fact that we were preps wanting to break into the metal scene and then flying too high with the personas and masks. I was going to not only wreck my life but the lives of people I cared about.”
He let out a low shuddering breath. “That maybe I should have listened to my father. To go to college, to get a degree in business, to fly straight.”
“So what changed your mind?” Eddie asked. “Other than Shane wanting everyone to have all the same letter as a middle finger to everyone trying to guess your identities, I guess.”
Steve let out a watery chuckle. “Shane reminded me of the beginning of Icarus’s story. That he had grown up in the labyrinth, never seeing the sky. How could his father had not seen that of course Icarus was going to play the second they were out? That, yes they were fleeing for their lives, but this was the first time his son had seen the sun, felt the breeze on his face and touched the waves on the sea.”
“But if Daedalus had played with Icarus instead of yelling at him, his father would have been able to keep him from getting too close to the things that would have harmed him,” Steve finished. “That he would have been there to catch his son when he began to fall.”
“So what was the lesson?” Eddie prompted.
“I wasn’t Icarus,” Steve said. “I was always free, I might have fallen from grace according to my parents, but that like God in the Christian story, they were cruel and cast me out because what they wanted for me wasn’t what I wanted.”
Eddie smiled. “So you became Abbadon instead. The one that fell but God still relied on to destroy the wicked. The opposite of Steve Harrington. The boy that rose up like a phoenix from the ashes to be better than his parents dreamed.”
Steve nodded. “Yeah. Icarus was the first to fall mythos wise, but Abbadon was the one people fear coming back.”
Eddie pulled him close. “Well, you’re my angel, now. Fallen or not, I’m not giving you up for anything.”
Steve kissed him softly. “I’m putting a lot of trust you, Munson. Don’t fuck this up.”
Eddie laughed and kissed him fiercely. Then he proceeded to show Steve all the ways loved him.
Steve knew he might always have doubts and fears, but now he had the support system he always needed.
It was more than past time to fly and in Eddie’s arms there was no limit to how high he could go now.
And he wouldn’t want it any other way.

You don’t like 1920s, 1940s AND 1950s fashion? Damn what did the mid-century do to you lol. K but seriously why not the 50s? The skirts had volume and were long-ish (at least in high fashion) and blouses were well structured and fitted and often had embroidery or embellishments.
Obviously I don't hate ALL of it; no era is a monolith. But there are a few things these eras have in common that I hate:
The rise of synthetic fabrics, AKA Using Plastic To Make Clothing. We're now at a place in terms of clothing where its actively harder and more expensive to wear natural fibers than to wear clothing made entirely of a substance that leaches into our water, holds odors, makes us sweat more, doesn't generally last as long or admit as much repair over time as most natural textiles, and just Kind of Sucks all around except for a few very specific purposes. Synthetics weren't invented in the 1920s, and natural fibers were common in all of these eras than they are today, but it was definitely increasing amounts of "BUY THESE NEW EXCITING PROGRESSIVE MODERN FABRICS!!!" throughout the early and mid-20th century. Which pisses me off in principle.
Less practical garments unless you lived a very specific lifestyle- namely, access to washing machines and a willingness to launder clothing after just one wear. Modern clothing is just not great unless you have access to very frequent washing (see above re: holding odors more than many natural fibers) and barrier garments to keep sweat away from them and stretch the time between washes aren't a thing anymore for most people. In the eras mentioned, everyone was getting so excited about machine laundry capabilities- and who wouldn't? washing machines ARE a huge boon! no denying that! -that they shifted away from modes of dress designed to minimize the necessity of laundering outer clothes. Except now, with concerns about the aforementioned microplastic leaching from washing machines draining into municipal sewers and less mendable clothing- washing is a huge strain on garments, and wears them out faster if you do it too often -we need to be getting back to the system of having fewer but higher quality garments and washing them less often. Except we can't. Because some idiot in the 1920s said "whoopee nobody will ever need linen combinations or chemises that actually serve a purpose anymore!" and the subsequent decades continued it.
The silhouettes generally do not spark joy for me. 1920s actively makes me fly into a rage and scream into pillows, with the exception of robes de style MAYBE. 1940s...well, let's say there was a reason the New Look was so popular, and that's "no more boxy utility wartime clothes." I will give 1940s the hair prize here, though, because I like it better than any other decade 1920s-50s. I actually DO like the New Look! ...but not its combination with the bullet bra; yikes. This is highly subjective.
Some of the textiles, patterns, colors, and common embellishments used are just not my thing. I don't go in for Bold And Graphic And Geometric anything, usually. With a very very small number of exceptions. Polka dots and florals are also not my thing (unless the florals are on a dark background). Plastic jewelry? Hard pass. ~Fun~ motifs like fruit (except pomegranates which have Goth Appeal), the poodles on a poodle skirt, household objects, transportation, etc? No thank you; reads too Kindergarten Teacher for me. Again, not universal or exclusive to those eras- witness the 1880s chicken-print dress I saw an illustration of once -but more prevalent, to my eyes.
Hair. 1920s bobs make most people's heads look blocks. I love a good bob, but those are not Good in my opinion. 1920s Up Hair is usually meant to mimic a bob. 1930s was only a little bit better. 1940s, as I've said, was skirting the line for me and marginally acceptable. 1950s took us right back to a solid Nope with either short poodle cuts or pageboys as the main options for adult women. An occasional chignon maybe, but nothing else that appeals to me personally. just not great all around.
All of these eras were holier-than-thou about the Victorians and their fashion, which I love, so I'm petty about it. Yes please tell me more about how your plastic bullet bras or potato sack dresses are inherently superior to Grandma's elegant and comfortable long wool skirts with the perfect center back pleating. Oh, the 1860s were the ugliest fashion period ever in your opinion? Fascinating. I am setting your car on fire.
I actually DO like the New Look...which is heavily inspired by mid-19th century fashion, so that's not really any big surprise. Still has the issues with synthetic materials and the end of practical undergarments, though. Also, why stop at mid-calf for everyday skirts? Instep Or Bust You Cowards.

Wally Darling
Tumblr media
It was quiet in his house, even Home didn't let out a single crack until this moment. There was just one problem. You haven't seen your dearest puppet oh so long ago. The plan was that you two will have a cuddle time together, but he was nowhere.
You got up from the couch and carefully looked around in the house. You cautiously called out his name, but no one responded.
You walked around in the house a little bit, hoping to find him.
He had his own painting room where he could make his own fantasy alive with the brush.
You walked closer carefully, not to scare him. Even so, he could actually clearly hear you sneaking up behind him, but he was more focused on the picture.
You peaked through his shoulders to see what he was up to.
Oh. My. Gosh. Your heart skipped a beat. He was painting a picture of you. How cute! Wally was a very talented artist and you were very amazed in this moment. He always did such a great job.
"This looks so great, Wally! You are such a good boy!" you said quietly, while you gently placed your head on his shoulder.
• it comes off to him like compliment
• and it's from you
• his sweetest neighbour
• of course, he is happy! ♡
• "Thank you, Neighbour!"
• he smiles at you happily, hoping that you like his work
• "Do you like it, Neighbour?"
• omg ofc you like it! How could you not?!
• He is so happy about the compliment and about that you're liking his work.
• he just stares at you happily with open mouth, listening your cheerful voice while you commenting of him and his art
Eddie Dear
Tumblr media
Eddie came home and you could tell, he was clearly exhausted. Poor boy, running back and forth all day, and do this job all alone, it must be tiring.
He got down next to you, just quietly lied down on his back and put his head on your lap.
"Hey." you said softly, curling his hair gently with your fingers.
"Hey, love!" he looked at you with his tired eyes, but his lips still curled up into a kind smile.
You were resting quietly in the warm room, just hearing each other's calm breathing was enough relaxing.
"It must be hard for you to do this job all alone, Eddie." you said quietly, no to destroy this calm moment that you have been in for awhile. "You're such a good boy!" you chuckled.
• he slowly opens his eyes, looks straight up at you
• look, idk if they can blush, but now he does it okay?
• like his face is completely red
• he always gets so flushed when you complimenting him
• he's so flattered
• and so damn cute ♡
• he's speechless, he can't think of what he could say
• so he just simply says
• "Oh... Erm... Thanks, (Y/N)!"
• he will definitely give a kiss to your hands in return
• Your compliments mean too much for him ♡
(a.n: btw I love Edddie, he is such a sweetheart 🥺 ♡
He is definitely my favourite character beside Barnaby! ★)
Barnaby. B. Beagle
Tumblr media
He knew that work is tiring for you and you had a long day. He wanted to do something pleasant for you. He couldn't cook, it was too difficult for him and he didn't wanna blow up the kitchen with his tryings. So instead of cooking, he cleaned out. It was not as perfect like you would did it, but it was acceptable. He was already finished when you were standing in front of the red and blue colored door. It was easy to recognize it. It had similar colors as Barnaby and it was the biggest door in the neighbourhood.
He opened the door with a happiest smile on his face. He was clearly missing you. He let you in and you immediately took a seat on the comfy couch.
Just a few minutes after you had some chance to look around. The house wasn't perfectly clean, like you could still something in the conner, but it was enough to make you feel happy and greatful about Barnaby.
"What a good boy!"
• omg i can imagine how his tail starts wagging
• I mean he's like a dog, but different, but still a dog, so what did you expect?
• he definitely loves it when you call him a good boy
• he just listens your soft and lovely voice while you caressing and rubbing his fluffy head
• he especially likes rubs behind his big ears
• will rest his head on your lap and just melt in and let you to pet and praise him
• probably will bite you carefully in an affection way
• or slobber on you occasionally
• he wants you to say it more times, so he'll try to make you proud as often as he can
• he absolutely loves it ♡
"Thank you, Barnaby!"
Frank Frankly
Tumblr media
You wanted to see your partner's reaction too much to lose this idea. You leaned forward in the chair to get a better look at Frank, then you called him.
"You are such a good boy, Frank!"
• he looks up at you strangely and confused
• you can't help, but giggle a little bit cause the frustration
• "Well... Thank you, (Y/N)..."
• then he goes back to his job
• probably he has to do something with those colorful bugs what are around him
• seems like he found a better company than you :")
• you stood up and got over to him, tried not to hurt his garden and the bugs
• "But seriously, hon, I do think that you're doing an amazing job!" you said it softly as you hugged him from behind.
"Thank you, Darling." he smiles at you adorably
• he still adores you dw ♡
• but he definitely likes dear, hon, love or even darling more :D
• (btw I think it would make him uncomfortable- not sure, but I feel like- lol)
Howdy Pillar
Tumblr media
You rested your arm on the counter as Howdy checked your items. You watched his movements. Slowly tracing your eyes from his face down to his hands, paying attention to details as well.
"Y'know, you do so much work in this place, Howdy. Like a good boy." You added jokingly the last sentence, didn't think of it too much, though.
He stopped moving for and looked up on you. You look directly in his eyes, getting red of embarassment.
"I mean-" You looked away sheepishly. "Not like that, just... You're doing such a good job here, y'know? It must be hard to keep this place alright by yourself." you chuckled awkardly, trying to change the awkard mood that you accidently did.
Howdy was still looking at you, but he didn't seem nervous or weird out about this. He just stared at you and then suddenly his lips curled into a kind, but a teasing smile.
"Yeah, it is." he answered.
He already put in a bag the last item you have bought of him, then he gently gave the bag to you with his third hand.
"You wanna drink a quick Dark Roast with me? Or if you prefer it more, you can have orange juice, or tea." he leaned closer to you on the counter.
"Sure." you said.
He walked away from the counter as one of his hands started to lead you beside him.
He glanced at you with a smile and said
"You still have to pay, though. Don't think that I'll forgot."
• omg-
• i don't think he'll mind it y'know
• but he prefers call you a good pet/boy/girl
• he may get teasy about it
• beside that, he will treat it as a compliment (cause he really deserves it)
• call him often, he won't mind
• just please don't call him like that in public :>
• he's cool with it :D

Unknown Ep 8 Stray Thoughts
Last time, Wei Qian sent Yuan away to study in NYC for years after the reveal about Yuan’s feelings. Wei Qian was unable to face Yuan or his feelings, and has been avoiding him for four to five years, even as he’s meticulously kept Yuan’s room clean. It’s clear he misses him, and literally leaves Yuan’s lamp on like he’s burning a candle for him. Wei Qian may not know how to sort the complex feelings in play here, but it’s clear that his brother is important to him, and he’s not doing well without him around. Yuan, for his part, continues to message Wei Qian, completed his schooling, and seemed to maintain his connections with the rest of their family. Meanwhile, Xiao Bao has grown into her role as a model and is now the subject of paparazzi speculation. Also, it seems like San Pang may have feelings for her. We left at Xiao Yuan returning and Wei Qian smiling to himself in relief to hear his siblings bickering in the house again.
“Seen enough?” He came back confident. It’s over.
Episode 8: The distance between us and love
Okay, big fan of Yuan not doting on Wei Qian at the table, and Wei Qian being awkward about it.
I really like San Pang as a character. He has no idea how to navigate the awkwardness he stirred up, and seems even more worried when Yuan thanks him for putting him through this separation.
Not a hickey on San Pang! That better now be from Xiao Bao!
They are from Xiao Bao! And after everything you put Yuan through!
That smile before removing his glasses and grabbing a cleaver was great. Yuan grabbing food and leaning back on the couch to watch in the background seals the moment.
Resorting to fire is a very worrisome sign.
“Good night, Wei Qian,” after pointed commentary about accepting changes as people grow and mature. I see you, sir.
Pairing San Pang and Wei Li Li is a useful way of continuing the exploration about the changes in a formerly caregiver role in a relationship. San Pang is also like an uncle or close cousin figure in this dynamic.
Yuan became a menace while he was in the US. I must know what gays adopted him.
Damn, did y’all not teach Xiao Bao how to cook?
I am not surprised that Xiao Bao was the one who originally let Yuan into the house.
Fishing Trip 2: Electric Boogaloo
Not Yuan telling that man, “Closed mouths won’t get fed.”
Damn, they used the separation well. Going back to the fishing trip is a good way to illustrate how different Yuan is now.
WTF why is the gangster dude back next week?
This show is incredibly impressive. It is so assured about every choice it makes. I am particularly resistant to these themes, and even I am taken with the execution here. It’s not skipping the important things we need to tear into if we’re going to discuss a taboo romance.

The Touchstarved DEMO by @redspringstudio! I had so much fun replaying this DEMO over and over, I truly cannot wait for the full release. The art is gorgeous, the writing is excellent, and I am surprised at how much I really loved each character, I expected to at least hate one or two of them like with My Next Life lol. I highly recommend checking out the DEMO if you're a fan of otome games or gothic stories!
The DEMO can be found here on itch.io or here on steam! All the stickers are from different Hallween stickerbooks from Michael's Art Store ^^; (ngl I think this is one of my favorite spreads, I even did do some studies of the color/rendering fhdjsf)
Writing typed below! (plus extra notes)
Rating: 9.5 (demo score - great demo) Played: Sp 2024 Port: itch.io Play full? Y YES!!!!!!

ngl I love Ais's mullet
This should not have been one of my first otome games bc now my standards are so high, esp in regards to character design
I wonder if the flashing soulless in the title screen means we'll see more soulless in the full game (than just the one)
okay damn I also really like Ais, these are some really well written characters
LMAO I was not expecting this music for Kuras
oh interesting I didn't realize Mhin's red choice was during your first encounter if you're an alchemist
okay Kuras is very silly and goofy 10/10 guy
ooo good theories about Ocudeus and control on tumblr - "obedience" -- reference to someone thinking the "obedience suits you" line on Ais's character card was actually from Ocudeus not Ais
Summary:
I thought when playing more otome games it would be really hard to beat My Next Life, simply because I am a huge fan of the source material that preceded the game. But wow, with the way this game is setting up plotlines, the full version of this game could easily make it onto my top favorite games list. Otome games are all about replayability, and the way just the DEMO is so rich with content and alternating paths makes me so excited and hopeful for the full game's release. I am bummed I got onto the Touchstarved train late and missed the kickstarter, but hopefully a shop will open around release bc I'd kill for an art book. The art is just so gorgeous and I cannot wait to do some studies, especially with color and rendering. Before playing otome games, I like to look at the character profiles beforehand and predict who I'd like and dislike. And I am very delightfully surprised that any initial dislike I had of characters all but vanished because the writing and personalities of these characters were so well made. I thought I was going to hate Leander but he ended up being the character I'm most curious about. Although I would say my least favorite is Kuras simply bc I'm not a fan of romancing doctors, I am still curious about his background story and connection to the others. In other words, great character who is just not my type. I am also delightfully surprised at the "vulgarity" in this game without being overly explicit -- I have grown so tired of how sanitized a lot of games and shows have been that it's always really nice seeing indie companies play by their own rules. I am so glad I stumbled across this game!! At this point I've done every route favorably but haven't tried all the "wrong" options -- more to play whenever I think about how excited I am for the full game! I've also seen the sneak peaks of an upcoming update ^_^. Highly recommend the game!!

Strawberry ghoul anon here again with more drabble (I'm gathering the courage to post the whole thing and you m a tad rusty when it comes to writing 🫣)
It had fallen quiet save for Dogmeat's furious digging in the soft dirt for worms the size of your arm, her new favorite treat. A whistle tore you from the book you had found, containing illustration after illustration of every plant in the glass house. You clutched the satchel of goodies you had found along with the book tight to your chest, learning from the past two times that the ghoul would most likely confiscate it for himself.
A whistle came out again, this time ripping Dogmeat from her worm hunt. You could hear the crunch and tinkling of the ghoul's footsteps. Another whistle, "C'mon now girlie. Don't you make me hunt you down again." The last words came out as a growl and the footsteps grew closer.
On instinct you tucked yourself further under the brush of you now hiding spot. You stuck your nose back into the book, stubborn. Not wanting to leave this paradise let alone the cool dirt that sat beneath you.
Dogmeat was the one to give away your hiding spot. Dumb bitch loyal as always to her master. You could hear him take a long draw from his inhaler before you felt a tight grip on your scalp and you were torn from you little slice of heaven. Forced to meet the deep hollowed eyes of your captor and companion. A squeak escaped your lips and you eyes grew like saucers. He couldn't hurt you it was part of his contract to escort you in one piece, alive. But the first-and last- time you ran off without his "permission" landed you hogtied and hauled over his shoulder like a sack of scraps. That dirty part of you flashed back to the way he held you, his hand gripping your ass so tightly his fingerprints were there for weeks. The way he had a grip on you hair igniting that same heat you felt between your thighs when he had you tied up.
Part of you wondered what'd he do to you this time.
You could see something in his eyes, it was dark glow. His lips twisted into a sleazy smile as his grip tightened releasing another small squeak from you. "Ain't anyone teach you that yer 'sposed to come when called."
You cursed your hormones as wetness joined that heat between your thighs. Your face now flushing to match.
"And to think I was fixin' to give your ass a treat for findin' this place." A jar of golden liquid rolled in his free hand. "Somethin' sweet for bein' such a good girl." His smile twisted more, despite the cavern where his nose should be he could smell what he was doing to you. The only reason he released you from the hogties the last time was that scent damn near made him disregard his bounty and take a bite.
"I don't want any of your stupid chems," you spat. Trying your best to ignore his hungry eyes and the ever growing tension in your core.
"Oh sweetie, this here's better than any drug you'd ever had. Now c'mon girlie." With that he pulled you from your hiding place, tossing you over his shoulder and planting a firm grip on your ass.

Smallville 5x06, “Exposed”
So, this scene, okay. I’m losing my damn mind, and here’s why.
First of all, we have Lex almost being a parody of himself by randomly bringing up historical figures to illustrate a point, but also there is so much to unpack here. In Judeo-Christian texts, the woman King David fell in love with (Bathsheba) was married to one of his soldiers, who was NOT his best friend (although he very much did have him sent to die in battle). I get what the writers are doing here with the Clexana triangle subtext, but that’s not how the story actually goes.
But. The thing is. King David very much did have a best friend (Jonathan), and there’s a decent amount of both religious and secular scholars who suggest a gay relationship between the two. I mean, the first verses that mention Jonathan literally say he loved David (who he just met!!) as his own soul, that their souls are bound, etc (1 Samuel 18:1). Their final parting involves kissing and weeping and vows linking their descendants together forever (1 Samuel 20:41-42). None of it’s especially subtle.
Cue me laughing/crying/pulling my hair out because how did the SV writers (who were writing Heterosexual Characters™️) manage to have Lex constantly drop references to multiple historical men who were probably in love with their male best friends (hellooooo Alexander the Great and Hephaestion) when like. A lot of fans think the same thing about Lex and Clark. There are straighter historical figures to choose from who don’t parallel your homoerotic leads, you know. In short, the creators couldn’t have queer coded this show harder if they’d tried, and I’m constantly entertained by it. You just can’t make this stuff up.

Your sister has always had immaculate taste. From her gorgeous flat in a Coruscant high-rise, to the handsome trooper currently staring down at her with adoration in his soft brown eyes as she wraps her arm around his waist, to the selection of high-quality brews in the conservator which you are currently raiding, she has curated a beautiful life for herself. She’s been your best friend since the day she was born, and you couldn’t be happier for her. You didn’t have an easy childhood, and seeing your little sister settled and thriving is everything you had hoped for her during those difficult days.
Her boyfriend—no, make that fiancé—practically worships her. As you watch them through the sliding glass door, you realize you’ve never seen her look as content as she does in that moment, smiling softly up at Hexx. Unbeknownst to you, an identical smile plays on your own lips as you close the conservator door. Just as you do, a latecomer enters the kitchen, and you turn automatically to greet him, your eyes widening as you take him in.
He’s a clone, but damn, what a clone. He looks older than Hexx and most of his brothers, though that might be due to his beard and longer hair. He’s tall and solidly built, and even in civilian clothing, he looks imposing. His long sleeves are rolled up to reveal forearms corded with muscle, with a hint of tattoo ink peeking from the edge of the fabric.
“Hello,” you greet him, that soft smile still in place as you introduce yourself.
“Mayday,” he replies, and his voice is deeper and and more gravelly than you’ve heard from other clones. “Pleasure to meet you.”
Up close, you can see faint lines around his eyes, and a sprinkle of silver in his hair. Definitely older than Hexx, then.
“Can I get you a beer?” you offer. “Or are you a whiskey man?”
“A beer sounds great, thanks,” he says, and you hand him the cold bottle you just pulled out of the conservator. His fingers brush against yours, soft and warm, and his eyes follow you as you turn to pull another bottle out of the conservator. “How do you know Hexx and Sunni?”
“Sunni is my sister,” you reply.
“I thought I saw the resemblance,” he says. “Why aren’t you out partying with the others?”
“Just came in for a drink,” you reply. He arches an eyebrow, and you buckle immediately under his unspoken interrogation. “And to hide for a few minutes.”
“Now, why would you want to hide?” he asks, tapping his bottle against yours and taking a long sip.
You shrug. “Not a huge fan of crowds. They make me nervous.”
“You must hate living on Coruscant, then,” he says.
“I would if I lived here,” you reply.
“You’re not local?” he asks, and you’re not sure if you’re imagining the hint of regret in his tone.
“No, I live on Nakadia,” you reply. “I’m only on Corrie for the engagement party.”
“Nakadia?” he asks. “Then you must be the farmer.”
“Yes, I own a flower farm there,” you reply. “How did you know?”
“Hexx told me they were having the wedding at your farm. You’re a brave woman to agree to host that many clones for a party,” he says with a charming smile.
“I’d do anything for Sunni,” you reply. “But I have to admit it’s weird to think that she’s getting married when I still see the adorable little girl with fluffy hair and a face covered in jelly when I look at her.”
“I know the feeling,” Mayday says with an ironic twist of his mouth. “We do what we can for them, but in the end, we have to trust them to know what they’re doing.”
“Hexx seems like a good man,” you say tentatively. “And he makes her happy.”
“Have you known him long?” he asks.
“I’d only spoken to him on holocalls until I got to Corrie three days ago,” you reply. “What about you? Did you serve with him?”
Mayday nods. “I’m his commanding officer, at least for the moment. I can tell you that there’s not a more loyal soldier in the GAR. He’ll take good care of your sister.”
“When you say ‘for the moment,’ what does that mean? Is he being reassigned?” you ask curiously. Sunni hadn’t mentioned it.
“Not to my knowledge,” he replies. “But I am retiring.”
He seems too young to be retiring, but there is a weariness about his eyes that makes you think he’s earned it.
“What will you do then?” you ask, relaxing back against the countertop.
Mayday mimics your laid-back posture, leaning against the wall as he answers. “Haven’t decided yet. I might just spend some time enjoying being the only person in charge of my time.”
“You’re not going to rush down to RTL to find the love of your life?” you ask, a teasing light springing into your eyes.
“Nah, not for me,” he replies. “I’d prefer to meet somebody organically.”
“Understandable,” you reply. “Though it certainly worked out well for Sunni and Hexx.”
“And what about you?” he asks.
“What about me?” You take a sip of beer and enjoy its icy effervescence on your tongue.
“Any plans to visit the matchmaker?”
“I’m not really interested,” you admit.
Mayday nods slightly, his eyes unreadable. “So you’re taken, then?”
The door slides open abruptly, and Sunni bursts in like the force of nature that she truly is, tugging Hexx behind her.
“Are you hiding in here?” she demands with an infectious laugh.
“Of course not!” you lie with dignity. “I was entertaining your guest.”
“Welcome, Commander,” Hexx says, subtly standing at attention.
“Relax, Hexx. You don’t need to salute me at your own engagement party,” Mayday says with that easy, charming smile.
Hexx and Sunni sweep you back outside to join the rest of the party goers before you get a chance to tell Mayday that you are very single.
Tumblr media
Months pass before you see Mayday again. Sunni is swept up in wedding plans, and you head back to Nakadia to tend to your farm. There’s plenty to do, between your normal responsibilities and the additional work of getting the property ready to host a large wedding. If you think Sunni is a social butterfly, she pales in comparison to Hexx and his multitude of brothers. Sunni is going to have the largest family-in-law in the galaxy, and it seems like half the GAR will be attending the wedding, along with their plus-ones, most of whom had met through Right to Love Matchmaking. Several of the matchmakers are also invited, and you hope they aren’t so dedicated to their work that they will harass you to sign up for their services.
A few weeks before the wedding, Sunni and Hexx arrive with a large contingent of clones to help with the labor of getting the farm ready for such a large gathering. Veetch is there, of course, along with numerous members of the 77th Heavy Brigade.
And, of course, Mayday is there.
It takes an unbelievable amount of work to get the farm ready, but given that Hexx has quite literally brought a small army to help, it goes faster than you expect. The entire first day is spent clearing brush to make space for the large pavilion where the reception will take place. It is dirty, sweaty, backbreaking work, even with the help of the droids. You are exhausted at the end of the day, and after taking a quick shower, you make your way out to the front porch to watch the sunset. It’s your favorite vantage point, and it’s a nightly ritual that you almost never miss.
Tonight, though, someone has already claimed your spot. His tall, broad form leans casually against the pillar as he surveys your lovely farm. In the golden light of early sunset, you pick up the glints of lighter brown and gold in his dark hair, and for an instant, you wonder what it would feel like to twine your fingers through it. On impulse, you stop in the kitchen and pull two bottles of ale out of your conservator. You join him and offer him a bottle wordlessly. He nods his thanks and goes back to staring out at the kaleidoscopic fields of flowers.
You didn’t see much of him today. He has been busy working on a special project in the barn, and his sleeves are littered with a fine layer of wood shavings. Your knees creak a little as you lower yourself to sit on the porch step, and soon he joins you.
“Nice place you have here,” he says at last, breaking the evening serenity. “Peaceful.”
“That’s what drew me here,” you reply.
He looks at you curiously. “Trying to avoid crowds?”
You nod, not wanting to spoil the tranquility of the moment by delving into your personal history. “It’s a good place to live a quiet life.”
“That sounds…” he begins, but he trails off.
His eyes have a faraway expression, and you wonder what horrors he’s seen to make him look so karking tired. He doesn’t continue, and you don’t prod him. Instead, you quietly watch the sun paint the sky in a wash of pastel. As the light fades and the dusk creeps in, you exchange occasional desultory remarks, but mostly you sit in companionable silence, drinking slowly and simply enjoying each other’s nearness.
“It’s a good place for a wedding,” he observes.
“Yes, I always thought if I ever got married, it would be here.” You smile. “I wouldn’t want the big party, though. Just a few people. Sunni and Hexx, a few close friends. A simple ceremony, and then a cozy dinner party under those trees,” you say, gesturing at the nearby copse of acthorn trees.
“You’ve thought it out,” he observes.
You let out a small, self-deprecating chuckle. “Kind of hard not to with everything going on.”
“That’s fair,” he says. “I never thought much about weddings. Didn’t think it would be a possibility.”
“Is this the first you’ve been to?” you ask curiously.
He shakes his head. “The matchmakers have been busy. Half of the commanders have paired up, and the other half are just waiting for their turn.”
“But not you?”
He shrugs. “Can’t say I ever thought much about the war ending, until it did. By then, it seemed a little late to start planning a life I never thought I’d have.”
You frown. “It’s not too late. You’ve earned that life, Mayday.”
“Maybe,” he acknowledges. “But I won’t find it on a speed date.”
Tumblr media
He’s waiting for you the next night, too, and the one after. Each evening, you open up more to him, and the two of you spend hours conversing in low voices late into the night.
“How many kinds of flowers do you grow?” he asks as he looks out across the vibrant patchwork of blossoms that stretches to the edge of your farm.
“Hundreds,” you reply. “Not all at once. I stagger the plantings to extend the growing season and keep the income a little more predictable.”
“Which ones are your favorite?”
“Fire lilies,” you reply. “They’re unpopular with buyers, but I still grow a patch of them just for myself.”
“I’ve never seen one,” he says.
“Would you like to?”
“Very much,” he replies.
You stand slowly. You’re accustomed to hard work, but the past few days have been a whole other level of manual labor. A tiny moan of relief escapes you as you stretch your tired muscles. When you turn to Mayday, he is watching you with an indecipherable expression. He’s very good at that, you’ve noticed. Sometimes he is very open and easy to read, and others he is incredibly guarded. He must be an excellent sabbac player, you reflect.
With a small smile at the thought, you lead him through the twilight into the garden. In the fading purple light, the lush perfume of the lilies surrounds you in a sweet, heady cloud.
“May I pick one?” he asks.
“Of course,” you reply.
Most people don’t bother to ask, and you never realized how much it bothered you until Mayday’s courtesy reminds you that you have a right to say no. He plucks a blossom carefully, reverently, making sure not to damage the rest of the plant.
“They’re beautiful,” he says quietly. “I can see why they’re your favorite. Why don’t buyers like them?”
“They don’t last long once they’re picked,” you reply. “It makes transporting them tricky.”
“Then I’m sorry I picked this one,” he says.
“Don’t be,” you reply. “There will be more tomorrow.”
The sun has fully set now, and his dark eyes reflect the pale light of the moons. He examines the blossom closely, taking in the graceful curves of the petals, the striations and speckles at the center, the delicate filaments of the stamens. His eyes rise to your face, and his hands follow nearly unconsciously. His knuckles brush subtly against your cheek as he tucks the flower into your hair. Your mouth suddenly feels very dry, and you swallow without meaning to.
“Beautiful,” he repeats.

Honestly Skulduggery in Hell Breaks Loose hurts my heart. He was simultaneously a hyper-violent asshole who sold out his teammates for a half-assed attempt at killing Serpine, but he was also JUST SO SAD. I spent the first half of this book wanting to punch him and the second half wanting to give him a hug, no matter how bad of an idea that would be. Anyways, spoilers ahead.
His self-esteem, for one, is absolutely awful, and he’s kinda right to think of himself in that way. He understands that his love of violence and hurting people isn’t normal, even if his friends go out of their way to try and not make him too uncomfortable. He questions Ghastly as to why he sticks around despite Skulduggery ditching camp to try and failing to kill a guy, and berates Ghastly for trusting and loving him on account of the fact that Skulduggery will probably just hurt him again.
And that scene where he was talking to Valkyrie and they were just chatting about random stuff? Broke my heart. At first I thought that Skulduggery might not like or trust someone who claimed to be his friend from the future, but him being happy to meet Valkyrie because it means that he’s still capable of loving someone and that he’s not a total lost cause was heart-wrenching. I really loved all of the Dead Men interacting with Valkyrie, but those two definitely hit me the hardest.
And another absolutely heartbreaking thing to watch was him using necromancy magic on Serpine by accident. The aftermath of the whole thing did such a fantastic job illustrating his frustration with his own magic, with how he killed Serpine, and with knowing that he’s now essentially damned his teammates. He also seemed so legitimately frightened by his own magic, making him default to refusing to acknowledge it as part of him and not want to talk about the subject. In fact, watching him panic and the other Dead Men react to his shadow magic was super interesting because they don’t really fear it. And why would they? Lord Vile hasn’t happened yet, Skulduggery is their friend, they all have nothing to fear, even if they are a bit out of their lane. Valkyrie was really the only one who understood the full implications of the situation that they were in, which gave her even more of a reason to panic because it means that the timeline had gone horribly wrong.
Also, some of the stuff that Serpine was saying to Skulduggery while chained up? Absolutely FOUL, I cannot even begin to imagine the amount of self-control it must have taken for Skulduggery to stand there and take all that for as long as he did. Because while he has pretty much no self-restraint for 90% of this book, this was the one place he knew he couldn’t mess up. And he messed up, not that it particularly mattered in the end anyways. But I like to tell myself that I have decent self-control, and I would have snapped that man’s neck so fast if he started talking in disturbing, gloating detail about the death of my loved ones. Really just goes to show that Skulduggery didn’t want to lose the rest of the people he cared about as well. That went great, didn’t it.
Somewhat unrelated to this whole tangent, but knowing that Skulduggery and Rustica (Ghastly’s mom) were buddies and would hang out and joke with each other hurt so much more knowing how Rustica dies.
And completely unrelated to this tangent, Valkyrie having to watch a version of her partner die only to kill an old man and have the timeline revert so that he’s alive but remembers nothing that happened must have been a DISTURBING experience. I’d probably never sleep again, I’d be so worried about the people I care about constantly. And also I’d be stuck trying to unravel the layers of the universe. I’m fully convinced that the reason Valkyrie sometimes blocks out information people are trying to give her (or trying to dumb it down/ trivialize it) is because this woman has handled the horrors of the universe and probably implements this technique to stop herself from going insane thinking about it.

Zenless Zone Zero
Well, I’ve been playing the shit out of this game, so fair warning, there will be significant brainrot ahead.
Tumblr media
Overall, I really dig it. I’m a huge mark for character action games, and well-done life sims tend to suck me in; Zenless Zone Zero is nailing both those aspects pretty damn well. In fact, it’s nailing them well enough that… how do I put this… it starts to slip into the territory of being A Good Game Generally, rather than just a gacha. And while this is a big accomplishment for ZZZ, this also puts it into direct conversation with other full-price games, resulting in its gacha elements causing more friction than Honkai Star Rail’s ever did*.
*I’ll be comparing this to HSR a lot, because I play way too much of both and they’re made by the same developer. I recognize that it is pretty odd and potentially even problematic to A / B compare them when I could be looking at the game through the lens of, you know, Gaming At Large. But hey, that’s why this is a subjective journal and not a holistic review blog! It is what it is.
Tumblr media
So, the aesthetic of this game fuckin rules - it’s like, late 90s to early 2000s VHS-core. The main characters run a Blockbuster, for Christ’s sake. Presentation-wise (and systems-wise, and, hell, music-wise), ZZZ is obviously borrowing a lot from the Persona series, but like… great? I’d love it if more things cribbed that style and made it their own, from the confidant hangouts, to the small but comfy explorable areas, to the dynamic menus with edgy character poses. The character design itself is all superb, all the way down to the crowd NPCs - some the shopkeepers here have cooler designs than the main characters of some other games. Even aside from the designs, ZZZ is doing a lot with lighting and color desaturation that really lends it its own unique vibe. They actually have a cohesive artstyle in here! wild.
Tumblr media
The presentation of the story is also killer. Sure, a decent chunk of the conversations are just models lip-flapping at each other - although they at least emote and pose a bit here, unlike the Star Rail dialogue scenes with their demure princess waves. In the main story, though, we get not only a heap of fairly lengthy cutscenes, but also this really cool comic panel-style presentation.
Tumblr media
I feel like there was a bit of a trend in the PS3/360 era of games to present a game’s story in this comic panel / storyboard style. I understood the motivation: games increasingly demanded a more involved, consistent storytelling approach, rather than the ‘One big rendered cutscene at the beginning and end’ they used to get away with, and the generation’s increased visual fidelity meant that doing even basic, in-engine cutscenes took a lot more resources to make something half-decent. In Spyro the Dragon on PS1 you could get away with a fun little 15-second gag with a barely animated polygonal yeti or whatever; in the PS3 era, you were going up against tryhards like Metal Gear Solid 4. Amidst this landscape, the pitch of having your illustrators pretty up some storyboards and put them in the game sounds like it’d save a lot of work - plus, consoles were finally outputting a high enough resolution that this sort of flat image wouldn’t be compressed to hell.
Thing is, I always kinda hated that approach. In some cases, I think that’s the popular opinion - I fuckin love Bayonetta, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone defend its weird slideshow cutscenes. Even in games where the execution is perfectly fine, though, it rubbed me the wrong way. I think of Infamous - objectively, the art’s solid and fits the tone of the game, and the motion graphics aim to capture some of the dynamism typical cutscenes would provide. Despite all that, it still feels cheap to me - all of the panning, effects, and graphic imagery feel like they’re trying to polish up something that inherently doesn’t fit.
Tumblr media
In ZZZ, though, I’m loving every one I come across. It’s obviously still done for efficiency reasons - there’s already a handful of characters that exist only in these panel scenes, saving the team the effort of having to model and rig them. But the freedom this allows for staging and storytelling is huge; the characters are more expressive here than anywhere else in the game, and we’re able to see situations with huge crowds and new locales much more often than would be possible in typical cinematics. And the illustrations are genuinely good, too - full of character, cool poses and creative compositions/angles.
Tumblr media
if everything actually had to be modeled, there's no way we would've gotten Legally Blonde Nicole
Plus, the cutscenes are constant, and boy do I love the animation here. It feels so rare nowadays for a high-budget game to do stylized 3D animation of this ilk. Your biggest budget games are all going for the cinematic look, and pushing realism as much as they can - and while I know an immense amount of work and craft goes into animating something like The Last of Us, boy, I just could not care less about something so lacking in flair*. Even bigger properties that use a stylized artstyle these days, like Breath of the Wild, still tend to lean towards fairly naturalistic animation. Zenless Zone Zero’s cutscenes, on the other hand, spin and stretch motherfuckers around like we’re back on the PS2, are filled with forced perspective, and I am absolutely living for it. It’s not even reserved only for bombastic action scenes, either - we get honest to god character acting-focused conversation cutscenes.
*Seriously, take me back to the Naughty Dog that animated Jak & Daxter. Jak’s hero animation is top tier to this day
youtube
Of course, the combat animation slaps too; each of the playable agents is absolutely dripping with character. Even characters whose designs initially left me cold won me over once I saw the amount of care put into their movement and combo strings. It’s honestly shocking to me that this is the same studio that made Genshin Impact, a game I dropped after about 2 hours because of how lifeless all the animation felt*. Unique run cycles for every character, actual non-human designs, the flourishes everyone has when stopping mid-combo to snap them back to idle, the absolute synergistic audiovisual bliss of the parry… it’s really impressive stuff from a young team.
*Same studio in name only, totally different team, I know, but still
Tumblr media
Mechanically, I have some mixed feelings about the combat as a whole. Zenless Zone Zero is, without a doubt, aiming to present complexity and depth as a team battler - that is to say, it’s more about team synergy, tag combos, and knowing who to use when, rather than soloing as any particular character. Nonetheless, I really would’ve appreciated individual characters having a bit more depth to their movesets; a jump, a launcher, cancels, anything. As outstanding as all the animation work is, there’s some characters that only have a normal attack string on square and one special attack on triangle. Like, sub-Dynasty Warriors level of complexity here. It’s rough.
This is where ZZZ’s gacha nature gets a bit ugly: so far, more complex kits and skill expression are mostly locked behind rarity, which is kind of scummy. In Star Rail, for the most part, 4-star characters are defined as such due to their numbers: they still have mechanics and complexity, they just aren’t tuned as high as the limited characters. Hell, in some cases they have more complexity. Ruan Mei is an almost incomparably stronger unit than Asta, but Ruan Mei’s play pattern is fucking boring: you use skill every three turns when it runs out. Asta, meanwhile, basically has her own risk & reward minigame that demands more thoughtful SP management.
In ZZZ, on the other hand, the lower-rank characters straight up have less going on in their kits. Nicole has like… one tech, sorta. Anby has one single animation cancel to chain her normal into her special quicker. Lucy’s only skill expression is choosing whether to tap special or hold special. Meanwhile, Zhu Yuan, a limited character, has a normal string that bounces between melee and ranged attacks, can be dodge-canceled at any point in the combo to branch into variations of the string, and a hold-normal attack string that’s completely different and has the same branching dodge-cancel tech.
Tumblr media
It’s one thing to lock raw damage and meta viability behind a gacha, but locking the characters that are mechanically more interesting to play straight up sucks. If I hadn’t been lucky enough on the standard banner to pull exactly the two characters I find the most mechanically satisfying, I don’t know that I’d still be playing - and this is the point where ZZZ begs comparison to other, non-live service character action games. Sure, it’s probably not fair to compare a random A-rank’s moveset to Devil May Cry V’s iteration of Dante, a feature-creeped nightmare of a kit 3 console generations in the making. But what about Sengoku Basara Sumeragi, my personal character-action GOAT? By all accounts a mid-budget title, yet it offers 40 full characters chock-full of more unique mechanics and animation cancels than you can shake a stick at.
Fuck, can we please get a new Sengoku Basara? Please? I’m desperate out here. I’ll take anything, y’all.
There’s also the inherent issue that plagues every action RPG (usually deftly avoided by the character action genre), which is the delicate balance of player success depending on the numbers vs actual mechanical skill - a balancing act made even more noticeable due to the gacha genre-standard of characters taking weeks of grinding to level up. This is a topic for another day, but suffice to say, a big part of the reason Honkai Star Rail works for me as a very pretty version of Cookie Clicker is because of the Autoplay option. In Zenless Zone Zero, if you’re not willing to grind out the same mob fight for a week or two, you’re gonna hit an endgame roadblock of doing chip damage to a boss you’ve mechanically mastered because you’re underleveled, and boy, that never feels good.
Tumblr media
For all those issues stemming from the gacha, I will say, it’s great that the story missions let you use the characters that are actually supposed to be present for those missions, even if you don’t own them. Aside from how nice it is to have an opportunity to put the whole roster through their paces, it goes a long way for actually getting invested in the story. Honkai Star Rail’s storytelling is a hot mess for many reasons, but it’s always particularly jarring rolling up to a sidequest at like, a local theater troupe with a wanted space criminal, the sitting president of a completely different planet, a ten year old child, and a shirtless cyborg cowboy, none of whom have canonically met each other; ZZZ’s approach sidesteps this issue. The proxy angle even provides a pretty valid diegetic explanation for why agents that don’t know each other might be working together.
Tumblr media
Now that we’ve sort of meandered back to the story after talking about animation led us on a long detour - the story is surprisingly solid. In particular, I really appreciate how straightforward the writing is. I don’t know if the issue lies with the original text or the localization, but Star Rail’s dialogue, even in simple missions, tends to be incredibly meandering and overstuffed; ZZZ is a lot better about letting all its characters talk like actual humans. It also helps that the plot so far is a lot more grounded, and spends more time focusing on each faction’s group dynamics rather than the overarching plot. These games live and die by their characters, so leaning into those strengths is a smart move.
Tumblr media
Zenless Zone Zero is, unfortunately, fully in line with Hoyo’s weird conservative politics - in particular, 1.0 and 1.1 are absolutely stuffed full of copaganda. With how many safety regulation jokes they made at the construction company, I initially hoped they’d lampoon the police faction a bit, or make a commentary on how comically heavily armed New Eridu’s police force are. In a vacuum, Zhu Yuan shouting combat lines like “Stop resisting!” or “Freeze, hands up!” while blasting someone with her gigantic, ‘JUSTICE’-emblazoned rocket launcher shotgun feels like it ought to be satire. Every time we talk to the officers, though, it’s just line after line about their solemn duty to protect the people of the city, how essential and important they are for the community, and so on and so on.
Tumblr media
This wholehearted embrace of the world’s current power structure is something Zenless Zone Zero approaches in nearly the exact same way as Star Rail. In both games, your playable character is someone that’s sort of operating outside the law - in Star Rail, as the maverick organization that is the Astral Express, while in ZZZ you work as an illegal proxy. Despite this setup, any time the protagonists come into contact with a governing body, they are no less than thrilled to help them enforce the will of the law.
In Star Rail, you aid the local governments (one of which is an undemocratic monarchy) in committing massive cover-ups to hide their failures from the populace not once but twice. In ZZZ, you aid the police to an obsequious degree - playing along with them to not arouse suspicion is one thing, but helping them organize a fucking community day on Sixth Street? Fuck that. Hell, said community day is even shown to initially be DOA because none of the local residents trust the police - and you best believe we get two full scenes of the MCs changing the resident’s minds, resulting in them spouting shit about “Oh, it was our fault for judging the police too harshly - they really do have our best interests at heart!”
Tumblr media
is it tho
There’s an argument to be made that the N.E.P.S. are a little different, given that they exist in a post-apocalyptic world with monsters popping up every day - and ZZZ’s copaganda is certainly a little less flagrant than something like Spider-Man helping the NYPD install civilian surveillance networks in Insomniac’s Spider-Man. And, sure, perhaps this can help excuse why they post fully armored, rifle-wielding soldiers in the Lumina Square DMV, and provides some justification that their existence is more helpful than the real world’s civilian-murdering property guards.
Tumblr media
Thing is, though, at every turn you’re hit with dialogue and situations which make it clear that, no, they’re the normal cops. Every other sidequest seems to involve calling the N.E.P.S. in on somebody or helping with an investigation, and for every time we see them handle ethereal activity, there’s two instances of them being called in for petty property theft or something similarly minor - even the playable character has heaps of dialogue choices threatening to call the police on someone*. Much like Star Rail’s reactionary politics were strangely at odds with the ‘blazing a new path’ ideals of the trailblaze, Zenless Zone Zero’s obsession with the police puts a damper on its underground, counterculture aesthetic.
*Including a case where both options threatened this, leaving me without a non-narc dialogue choice.

And finally… I don’t know where to fit this in, so I guess it just goes in its own little section at the end here. Lots of people, myself included, have touched on the Persona inspirations - and they’re certainly significant. One thing I’m surprised I haven’t seen anyone mention as a huge influence is Yasuhiro Nightow’s Kekkai Sensen / Blood Blockade Battlefront. From its sense of style to its worldbuilding, ZZZ damn near feels like fanfic to me. Hell, it’s right in the name - BBB? ZZZ? And this is on top of the dimensional crossover / big city vibe, the retro fashion, the different factions. Victoria Housekeeping might as well be Libra 2.0 - Von Lycaon is a damn near perfect 50/50 expy of Klaus and Stephen Starphase. And then Belle / Wise, who assist these powerful fighters in a noncombat role just like Leo, also turn out to have some sort of special magical eyes granted to them by untold powers from within the dimensional rift??

I’m here for it, don’t get me wrong - love Nightow. But that can’t be coincidence, right?

Breaking the Rules
The google doc for this fic was called 'shameless breeding kink' so. there you go. I promise I eventually will write something other than seahorse dad Buck.
Huge thanks and love to @hangsters for beta reading!
Please consider reblogging and commenting over on Ao3!
----
Buck and Eddie will always insist that they are completely professional when they're on the job. Even though they're married, even though they're deciding to grow their family, they still make sure to never get distracted. They've got nothing but respect for the strict rules in place.
They're lying, of course. But they still say it.
----
People always asked Buck and Eddie what it was like to work together.
Eddie understood the curiosity. You got a lot of married first responders- of course you did, who else would be willing to put up with them- but very few who wore the same uniform, much less worked out of the same house. So they always asked, blinking in surprise at the ‘Diaz’ and ‘B. Diaz’ on their turnouts or the silicone rings on their fingers or the matching tattoos, whatever they happened to notice first. And they always asked.
Eddie would always say, and honestly believed, that it was actually good for them. The 118 had made them team members, it had made them friends and now it made them better husbands. In fact, very little felt all that different.
It was the same jokes, the same smiles flashing at each other as they pulled on their gear, sitting next to each other at every dinner almost reflexively, the same glances in the locker room. Of course the fear for each other was there, but it always had been. Both Buck and Eddie knew how to close off that part of their hearts, get the job done, run on pure faith until they could hold each other tight enough to bruise on the other side.
So being married really hadn’t changed much about working together. Which kind of proved everyone right about how they should have realized they were in love ages ago.
But it made it easy to keep things professional. Eddie prided himself on that and he knew Buck did too. Of course there was nothing in the rules about a quick stolen kiss or some playful flirting but there was also nothing in the rules about their team torturing them whenever they caught them at it. They all kept things in balance, the 118 was too important to both of them to start acting like idiots.
That’s what Eddie would tell people whenever they asked. Even after Buck made a complete and total liar out of him.
-
A good day at the firehouse didn’t necessarily mean a quiet one. There was a fine balance to these things.
The bell had rung enough times to keep them all from getting antsy but not so much they hadn’t been able to catch their breath. Every call had a happy ending but none had been easy, leaving them all with the satisfying ache in their muscles that came with ‘making a difference’ being action and not just words. They’d had a long, uninterrupted dinner where it had been hard to find room in their mouths for the amazing food and the laughter. All of Eddie’s share of the jobs were done and his favorite spot on the couch was free so he kicked back gladly, without a shred of guilt. It had been a busy day but it had been a damn good one.
He got a few pages into the copy of Sports Illustrated on the coffee table, enough to get annoyed at how the Spurs fumbled their last game all over again, before he heard footsteps behind him. Heavy footsteps, hurried and eager even when they didn’t have anywhere to rush to, like they just always believed whatever they moved towards would be something great.
Eddie already had his head tipped back, his mouth already curved into a grin as Buck walked up, “Hey baby…you look cute upside down.”
Buck braced his hands on the back of the couch, his smile giving Eddie the same feeling as stepping into warm sunlight. He leaned down and pressed a quick kiss to his lips, just because they could.
“So do you…listen, I think you need to go take a shower,” Buck hummed, his voice unusually quiet, almost conspiratorial.
Eddie frowned, not sure he’d heard him correctly, “You think what now?”
Buck clearly only just managed to choke back a laugh, his smile turning into something Eddie associated with their bedroom rather than the break room.
“I said I think you should take a shower,” he repeated patiently, his lips gently skating Eddie’s forehead.
“Do I smell that bad?” Eddie cocked an eyebrow, tone light just in case he was imagining that smile, that slightly smoky tone in his husband’s voice, if his pupils were a little wider than normal.
“You smell great, actually,” Buck cocks his head, a secret definitely held in his smile, “But Cap is in his office doing paperwork, Hen is catching up on her sleep, Ravi and Chim are playing pool. So I think you need a shower. And it just so happens, I do too.”
Eddie felt a tightness in the front of his uniform trousers, one that made him shift slightly. It had taken Buck and him a long time to realize their feelings for each other, way longer than it should have done, but even he wasn’t misinterpreting things now. Buck wasn’t kidding.
“Baby…” he swallowed hard, reaching up to brush his fingers against his husband’s cheek.
God, it was impossible not to be at least a little smug that a guy who looked like Buck was standing over him, ready to break who knew how many HR rules just to fuck him. But he could be smug and responsible at the same time.
“We promised everyone we’d behave,” Eddie reminded him gently, “You know how hard they were gunning to send us to different houses after we got together. Cap fought for us and I don’t want to fuck it up. Believe me, I’ve thought about it too but we got a perfectly good bed at home we can wreck. Here, we’ve got to be careful.”
Buck’s expression didn’t flicker, like he’d been expecting every word, like Eddie was hitting beats on a script and he was a couple of pages ahead. There was more than a little bit of flourish as he pulled his phone out of his back pocket, flicked on the screen and held it in front of Eddie’s eyes. He even remembered to turn it upside down.
Eddie recognised the app immediately. It was a hormone cycle tracker, something Eddie hadn’t even known existed before he and Buck started living their lives according to it, months ago now. It had felt a little like a military operation at first, though only slightly better organized with Buck at the helm, but they’d gotten their heads around it. And right now, flashing merrily at the top of the screen were the words they’d been waiting to see since Buck had come off his testosterone. Potential fertile day. Ovulation likely.
Eddie swallowed hard, sitting bolt upright and twisting to pull his husband into a deep kiss, the kind that would have knocked Buck off his feet if he didn’t have Eddie to catch him, the kind that had him laughing with all the joy of a magician who’d just pulled his first rabbit out of a hat and brought the house down. The kind that absolutely was not appropriate for work.
“Like I said,” Eddie gasped, cradling his face, grinning a mile wide, “We’ve got to be careful not to get caught.”
There was some small part of Eddie’s brain still functioning enough to appreciate the irony. The amount of times he’d been in this exact locker room or ones like it, telling himself to keep his eyes down, to not stare, to get his thoughts in line. Even before he and Buck got together, before Eddie had been able to admit his sexuality to himself, he’d been keeping his eyes firmly fixed on tiled floors, getting into his baseball gear, his fatigues, his 118 uniform as quickly as possible, but not so quick that it was obvious he was hiding. Like the other guys would only need to look in his eyes to know he was different, even if it was in a way Eddie wouldn’t let himself understand.
And now here he was, back pressed against the lockers so hard he’d have indents in his skin when Buck took a breather from shoving his tongue down Eddie’s throat. There was some irony there, enough for a small part of his brain to notice.
The rest of Eddie’s brain told that small part to shut up and focus on kissing Buck back.
They left their clothes in a haphazard trail across the floor of the little changing room before the showers, naked by the time Buck nudged them under the shower heads and reached past Eddie, sending a cold spray over the two of them. Eddie yelped and shuddered as Buck laughed, pulling him close so the warmth of his skin chased away the goosebumps rising on his skin, kissing him until his chilled nerves flooded with heat. The cold had never bothered Buck, of course it didn’t. How could it when the sun itself shone out of his skin?
Eddie kissed him again and again, gasping, open mouthed kisses as water ran through his hair, in rivers down across his back, flowing from his hands to Buck’s shoulders. The hiss of the droplets hitting the slick tiles under their bare feet covered their moans as the kissing became something more than that, as hands wandered and grasped at flesh, as Buck hitched his leg up to Eddie’s hip, rolling his own until Eddie was stiff and aching.
“Not wasting any time, huh?” Eddie groaned, biting his lip hard as the tip of his cock kissed Buck’s entrance but slid away with the tide of their bodies.
“Like you said, baby,” Buck breathed in his ear, leaning down and nipping his earlobe lightly, kissing along the curve of his neck, doing everything he knew got Eddie’s motor running, “We got a perfectly good bed at home to wreck and, believe me, we’re gonna. But right now, you’ve got a job to do.”
Eddie had studied the human body enough to know how to fix it when it broke, at least enough to let it limp off the battlefield or out of the burning building. But he couldn’t say much about the messier parts, the parts that ran on ancient, deep rooted impulses and slow, mysterious chemicals, he didn’t know much about things like instinct. But when Buck moaned those words in his ear, Eddie felt something very old and very deep stir and pop its claws and shudder. He didn’t need to understand it to feel it.
Buck gasped, all the air leaving him in a rush as Eddie turned them and pressed him to the wall with some force, “Oh fuck…”
Eddie’s pupils were so wide his eyes looked almost black, his eyes desperate to pull in every scrap of light, to see every inch of Buck, “Good?”
“Fucking incredible,” his voice was weak, breathy, but his hands grasped Eddie with a grip like steel, “More of that please.”
Eddie had more to give, he always would for Buck. He locked eyes with his husband as he slowly pressed his cock into him, unwilling to miss a single flicker of his muscles, the way water droplets shone on his eyelashes, his lips trembling as a low moan shuddered free. He tried to burn that expression into his brain, press it and preserve it like they had with their wedding flowers, holding it perfectly so time could never take it from him. So he’d always be able to remember the moment Buck trusted him so completely, welcomed him into his body and gave him permission to leave something behind.
And it could only be a moment. Eddie rolled his hips, muffling the soft cry Buck gave as the head of Eddie’s cock scraped his g-spot. He pressed Buck with his body, one hand blindly groping until it found the faucet, cranking the water up so the rattle on the tiles got louder. Loud enough to hide the sound of skin smacking into skin as one thrust rolled into another, their movements soon becoming hurried and frantic, they knew they didn’t have a lot of time. If they had to be fast, they may as well enjoy it.
Buck made those fractured, gasping snatches of breath Eddie adored, each one punctuating the moment their hips met, the moment where they were most inseparable. But still he managed to whisper in Eddie’s ear, urging him on.
“That’s it, baby, that’s it, harder,” Buck’s voice was strained, pleading, one hand gripping his shoulder while the other slid down slick skin to grasp at his ass, “Give it to me, knock me up…”
Eddie groaned at that, those words yanking him forward like they were a leash tied right around his dick, somehow finding a way to speed up, “Yes. Yes, whatever you want, I’m yours, yours…”
The leg thrown up to Eddie’s hip trembled in his grasp, the hot muscle around his cock tightened, Buck’s voice in his ear sounded so desperate it was almost panic.
“I’m there, gonna…” he whimpered, clinging to Eddie like he was his anchor to the rest of the universe, “Gonna come, baby, please…”
“I’m with you, Buck,” Eddie kissed along the side of his face and down the curve of his shoulder, trying to reassure him with more than his words, “Let go, mi corazón, I’m right here.”
That was all the reassurance Buck needed. He turned his face to Eddie’s as the tide washed over him, as he was pulled under. Eddie curled around him, water breaking across his back, giving his husband that moment before he let himself fall apart. When he came it was blinding, almost painful, it took everything he had not to send him and Buck into a heap on the floor. Heat and salt flooded into Buck, making his toes curl and his breathing hitch, everything Eddie had to give him until it felt like there was nothing inside him but a strained moan of his husband’s name.
And all they could do, in the panting, heavy moments after, was burst out laughing.
“Oh my god…” Eddie’s voice was a rasp, breathless but he couldn’t stop laughing, like all the joy he’d ever denied himself in his life was bubbling up and out of him, “We’re too old to be doing this…”
“I hope you mean the whole sneaking off to bang at work thing…” Buck slowly pulled his leg down, trembling like he was remembering how to stand on his own two feet all over again, “because if you mean we’re too old to have a baby, it might be a little late.”
Eddie’s grin turned gentle, arms coming around to hold Buck close, “No. I’m certain we’re ready for that…and it’s pretty unlikely we got it the very first time?”
Buck smirked, slapping his chest playfully, “Yeah, go back and tell your nineteen year old self that. See how that conversation goes.”
Eddie winced theatrically, “Oh, ow, alright then…I’m just saying, don’t worry if it takes a few tries. We’ll make it work, Buck.” He pressed a kiss to his forehead.
Buck melted against him, giving himself a long, indulgent moment before finally pulling away, killing the water while Eddie went to grab their towels from the rail, “I know. I just can’t wait to do this with you.”
“Neither can I. Although, if we did just make a baby there…” Eddie snagged Buck with a towel slung around his neck, pulling him in close, face suddenly deadly serious, “We are never, ever telling anyone where it happened. Understood?”
Buck snorted, miming pulling a zip across his lips, “Not a word…”
Eddie smirked, yanking back that invisible zip before kissing him, unable to do anything else, “I love you so much, you know.”
Even grinning and joking and giggling like teenagers fooling around at the back of a class, Buck knew what those words meant and he gave them back willingly, “I do know. And I love you too, Eddie.”
-
People always asked Buck and Eddie what it was like to work together.
Eddie would say that not much had changed, they were completely professional on the job, they had a strict line dividing their lives at home and their lives in the station house. He’d still say it, even if it was a lie.
But Buck would always tell the truth. He’d always grin and only say that it was the best bit about the job.

I am absolutely adoring this comic. I have always loved the Sonic games/media in general. I love horror/creepy ideas, I love the way you have illustrated and written the characters so far, I love the angst, the little details. Also I feel like your style for drawing the Sonic characters has kind of grown in a way as you’ve continued it!
If you told me that I would be reading and invested in a Sonic horror comic in 2024 I would say “nah that’s bs”.
But damn I am enjoying this SO, SO very much and I can’t wait to see more. (Sorry if you’re overwhelmed with asks or anything else;; but I thought this one might cheer you up a little!)
LOL no cheering up needed! I'm as cool as a cucumber here! Thank you, though, I'm glad you're enjoying the comic!
I do wince a little looking back at my older pages, but I DID draw them like a year ago. This has been great practice! Maybe someday I can work for IDW haha? 🙏
