The Rime Sparse
So many are grabbing for the money, so many
Want a free lunch, or are cynical and settle
For entertainment, that the world has adopted
Shallowness as its habit, and what was once
Our birthright is now considered deviation.
So squandered is our natural wisdom, that he
Who seeks the source of the flowing itself,—the Muse’s spring—is thought a fool:
Who really desires laurel, or myrtle either?
“Goddess-lover, go, in the rags you deserve!”
Is what they’ll say, themselves
pursuing
More material gains.
You’ll find few comrades
On your chosen path;
but for that reason I pray
All the more that you will not falter.
Petrarch–translation by Dale Pendell
And who was Dale Pendell?
A great poetic story telling genius ✨️✨️I always love sharing those who inspire me or tickle the crevices of my mind🤸‍♀️
Dale Pendell (April 14, 1947 – 13 January 2018) was an American poet, ethnobotanist, and novelist. Writing in an evocative style all his own, he fused science, folklore, and poetry in describing the relationship between psychoactive plants and human beings. A long time student of ethnobotany, Pendell discussed historical and cultural uses of "power plants" in his works. He read and distilled the literature of pharmacology and neuroscience, of ethnobotany and anthropology, of mythology and political economics as they intersect with the direct experience of human psychoactive use. hi hi!! i just wanted to send you a quick message after reading your post about the psychopharmacology thing, that's so so so cool and something i too am absolutely fascinated by so i'd love to learn more about it actually! if you have any book recs or just want to share more about it here on tumblr i'll be happy to follow your passion. i've read michael pollan and dale pendell and follow a couple of podcasts on the subject, i'm particularly interested in the intersections between therapeutic use and the arts. i hope you're having a nice day!! X
I’m going to be honest and admit that I really have not read many books on the subject. I’ve always preferred articles/wikis/people’s personal experience reports. The only stuff I can really recommend would be PIHKAL and TIHKAL by Alexander Shulgin, which detail his experiences with a bunch of different psychedelic phenethylamines and tryptamines, respectively. I’m not sure if that’s what you’re looking for, but there is information in there about their usage in therapy. As far as information, The Drug Classroom on YouTube has a lot of videos breaking down the effects/chemistry of different psychoactive drugs; there’s also a podcast.
As far as therapeutic use, I’ve always been particularly interested in the effects that hallucinogens can apparently have on mental illnesses like OCD. I really have not gotten to try many things myself, but yeah that’s always been something I’ve been curious about.
I’ll look into the stuff you listed because honestly I’m not familiar with it; Dale Pendell seems pretty interesting.

no one knows I’m quoting the warning note in the three volume series of poetry about doing every kind of drug but that’s ok. I don’t need to be understood in this lifetime. when the posthumous connection is made between my blog and dale pendell then you’ll see. then you’ll all fucking see.

Plants are all chemists, tirelessly assembling the molecules of the world, and in their transactions with insects, birds, animals, and fungi, they find elaborate ways to defend themselves, to seduce pollinators, to confuse. “Only plants had consciousness. Animals got it from them.” - Pharmako/Poeia by Dale Pendell

I cheated on my reading list again and started “The Language of Birds” by Dale Pendell instead. I did, at least, finish the first part of “Man and his Symbols”, I had only two parts left from the first time I read through so this... this is an allowed cheat. Sue me.

An Announcement!
Tumblr media
I am happy to announce the forthcoming publication of my book by Tria Prima Press. .
It will soon be here! Publishing in December!
Nearly 200 pages, a hybrid of sorts, combining my art work over the last 2 decades with chronicles of adventures along the path as well.
It has been a long time coming. I started discussing this book with Dale & Laura Pendell around 2010-2011, and started assembly 6 years ago. I gave up on it a few times, changed direction and when I finished up on the design, I sent it to, Tria Prima a very interesting publishing house on the recommendations of the writer, P.D. Newman. They answered in under 24 hours, saying that they wanted to publish it. Amazing really. When I sent my last one to New Traditions, I didn't even get a rejection notice.
There are distinct sections in the book. Illustrations done for the Invisible College (a review I have been publishing for 15 years or more. It was started on the recommendation of the late great artist Robert Venosa & his wonderful partner Martina Hoffmann). There are sections as well for my visionary work, and for Radio EarthRites, another project spanning 17 years.
The writing covers various adventures from the mid 60's to the present. Some of the entries are entheogenically fueled, others not so much.
This book is the first in a series of three that I have been contemplating producing. The second one is now in the works.
I will let everyone know when this edition is finally published, and available!
Thanks for the kind support! Gwyllm

"All too often, certain concepts in each get frozen into dogmatic or glib assertions. On one side, we might find “scientism,” reduced to what Gurdjieff called “nothing but-ism”—a wholly material explanation of everything. On the other side, a magical New Age worldview that can become so superstitious that it loses critical ability and the value of testing. So I wanted to work in between them."
