February 13 - 2024 Tuesday
10:42pm
6/10
This morning I sprayed the carpet with vinegar all over to get the mold out, also cleaned the visible spots with mouthwash like mom told me. I had mom take me to the store for drinks where I shook hands with the lady that works there that I never met. It was her last day though, shame because she seemed more around my age which is rare in general around here. When I got home I made Spaghettios, a meat stick, and a pear cup for breakfast since I didn't have much time.
Work was weird. I warmed up with some good sketches and finished that stream commission. Then I worked on the next one. 570 had a lot to say about my art style lately and I respect the input but honestly didn't want it. I didn't entirely understand his point either. But I wasn't in a mood to let it bother me.
Before lunch I took time to do whatever needed to be done. I vacuumed, brought wood in for my parents, washed my clothes, and tried to pay my dental insurance but I found out it was cancelled since I wasn't able to pay them fast enough. But thats because they didn't get the damn letter to me in time.
Lunch was a slice of pizza, some cool ranch doritos, and a pudding. After today's request, I finished a drawing and spent the rest of my evening working on my Valentines world. My goal was to finish it completely tonight but I ran into some issues but it's stuff I should be able to figure out in time tomorrow. I did that until Daisy was in bed. She read me a couple chapters of Black Beauty and I played Kingdom Hearts.
~~~
Today was just a lot of doing stuff. Didn't have too much time to think or whatever. It was chill.
3 Things that made me happy today: -Ena buying me Helldivers 2 -Figuring out how to diagnose VRchat world size -Daisy reading to me/watching me play/telling me how excited she is for Valentines day
The next morning came all too quickly.
After getting unceremoniously kicked out of the bed, and subsequently forced to be on good behavior, Squall reached out for Xu's hand to at least hold. It was better than nothing to keep her close, still her nerves. At least, until sleep overtakes and gives a break from it all.
0700 hours comes too soon. He forces himself to not just curl back up and sleep. May as well be somewhat productive now that he has been forcibly brought into the world.
He goes out into the world with minimal security against the recommendations of smarter people like Kiros. The argument is that the surely-following press will be enough of a bodyguard: a killer can hide in numbers, but the more people surrounding the target, the more likely something is to be seen. And on the first day he is publically out and about? Only a moron would think today would be the perfect day to get their mark.
Squall goes to the presidential palace first to get cleaned up, shave the scruff, put on something clean. Emails get sent, phone calls get made. Garden is functioning without him, but there are still things he needs to do. Not everything gets to be delegated.
Once work is finished (as much as he cares to do at that time), he sets off into the city. Now that it is a mostly-human time, there are more people, and more eyes. Good. He needs to be at least somewhat in the public eye after holing up for so long in the hospital.
It's a little past 1330 hours that he returns to the hospital room. One hand holds a bag of dime novels and magazines that border on obscene. The other, flowers: a mid-sized bouquet of roses, daisies, and dahlias playing on a red theme. She liked red, right?
Sushi would be later. He doubted the first thing Xu would want after operating was food.
Seeing her almost instantly lose her stomach contents into a hospital basin, Squall knew it was the right call.
"Afraid I can't do that," he replied, setting the bag of Cultured Literature down and slipping into the bathroom for Xu's toothbrush and the travel-sized thing of mouthwash. "Here."
How do you feel? Did he want to get punched?
"Going to assume they got everything out this time, and you won't need to go back through all that?" That two week decision was turning out to be for the better.
"I'll bring her charts once they're updated," the orderly informed. "As well as the new medication. Nothing a bit of paramagic shouldn't stitch up in a few days time."
"Thanks." He'd wanted to hear that from her, but sure.
"Want me to leave you so you can sleep a bit?"
She kisses him, and he wants to chase her lips as she pulls back. The touch is near electric; he has missed this closeness with her. This candid intimacy. He would give anything for a lockable door.
"I'll be sure to let the press get a few good shots of be fielding them, just for you." It would give them something to talk about. A fun little fluff piece. Something to show that they hadn't been wholly brought down by this whole matter. The tabloids would eat it up. Some poor author might get a boost in sales.
He shifts closer, his arm draping over the curve of her waist, hand resting on the small of her back. Hospital be damned.
"A little date, just the two of us." He would even bring her flowers. There was no point in being subtle anymore. Let people talk. Let people gape.
This time, he initiated the kiss, wanting - needing - her. It had only been a week, and it felt like far too long. He didn't care if anyone walked in. Or if Laguna woke up. There was a privacy curtain to hide them just enough.
Just enough for a kiss.
"When all of this is properly over, I'm taking you out for a real date. You have my word."
yes my obsession with making animalic notes popular again bc i can’t with people thinking clean fresh spring meadow will cancel out body odor it’s like those scents don’t play together they won’t cancel each other out they will now both be clashing and more obvious it’s like how if u eat chili pepper and then use mouthwash it’s not gonna cancel out ur mouth is just gonna be hot and cold .. if u wear fragrance with even just a little nod to the fact we are humans and have human smells and aren’t naturally fresh as a daisy then it will just blend so nicely with our natural scent and mask it rather than clashing .. like how ur makeup can sit on top of ur skin or melt in seamlessly like hello
Chances {Chapter Ten}
I think this is my longest Chapter so far lmao
Master List
Tainted
Word Count: 1867
I'll be honest with you guys, our first kiss is tainted. This chapter will explain it. I will also mention that this might be hard for some readers to read, so reader discretion is advised.
I pray for the world to open and swallow me whole right then and there. Of course, he would show up. He has to insert himself into every wonderful thing in my life. He has to plaster his face in every corner of my mind. Tom looks over my head at the man I used to be married to. This is not how I wanted to tell Tom about who it was. I slip my hands out of Tom's and turn around to Jared.
He smiles wickedly like I've fallen into his trap. The smile sends waves of nausea and anxiety coursing through every vein in my body. "What do you want, Jared?" He hands me a bouquet of flowers. Purple and green daisies. I cross my arms to avoid taking them. "I was thinking of you, so I bought you some flowers." Jared's attention shifts his attention to Tom behind me. "Thank you for dropping my wife off. I really appreciate it." Oh, absolutely the fuck not.
"Jared," I snap, pushing him away from Tom so we can speak semi-privately. "Why in God's name are you here? I am not your fucking wife. I don't want your damn flowers, which you never bought me when we were together anyways. I don't want you near me." My voice rising with the anger I feel boiling inside me. "You are nothing but a horrible stain on my history that I wish I could erase. You have ruined my life from the moment you walked in with that stupid book. You are the most possessive prick I have met in my life, and I regret every minute I spent with you." Jared continues to smile down at me. He has me right where he wanted me, yelling and spewing venom.
"I just wanted to show Tom what kind of girl you really are," He says, looking at Tom behind me. "A venomous bitch." My jaw drops to the floor when I realize I walked right into his trap. He pushes the flowers into my chest and grabs my face roughly in his hands. The kiss is forceful and possessive. I feel the bile rising in my throat the longer he keeps his lips pressed to mine.
Jared finally pulls away, wiping his lips. "I'll see you later, Jules." He walks off like nothing volatile just happened. I have approximately five seconds before I spew popcorn all over the steps. I drop the flowers on the ground and rush to the door, slamming my keys against the sensor pad and hoping it works. The door clicks like a heavenly sign. The gold trash can next to Will's desk is the closest and safest spot for the vomit.
"Holy shit, Stella. Are you okay?" Will asks, standing up from his desk as I empty my guts into his freshly cleaned bin after falling to my knees. Someone rests their hand on my back before pulling my hair out of my face. I wave them off.
"Fuck off, Jared." I manage between heaves.
"It's not Jared." Tom answers. "I want to make sure you're okay, and then I'll leave if you'd prefer." I have no energy to fight as I continue to dry heave, nothing but saliva and air coming out. Will hands me a handful of tissues as I sit back on my heels. I manage a small smile in return as I wipe my mouth.
"Sorry, Will." I apologize.
"Don't be. I'd rather it the trashcan than across the floor," Will jokes back. "Let me get you a water from the back." I look at Tom when Will leaves.
"I'm sorry. Theater popcorn doesn't taste good coming back up." He shakes his head with a small laugh.
"Don't apologize, Love. He seems like a cock." I chuckle with a nod. "I'm not going to force you to talk about it now, but I would like to understand more about that relationship." I nod. It's a fair request.
"If you grab those stupid flowers for me, we can head up to my apartment and talk. If you want," I suggest. Tom gets up to grab the flowers as Will comes back with a cold water bottle. I trade Tom the bottle for the flowers, pushing them bud first into the bin I just hurled in. I give Will another apology and tell him I'll get him his favorite bistro next time I'm at the studio.
Tom follows me back to the elevator silently. I have no idea what to say to him, especially after something like that. What are you supposed to say when you kiss the guy of your dreams, and your abusive ex comes by and forces one on you? Sorry I have a fucked up past I've been conveniently avoiding? I unlock my apartment door and walk in first. "You can sit anywhere. I have to go bleach my mouth." I mumble, making my way to the bathroom.
I avoid looking at myself as I gargle mouthwash, turning my back to the mirror. I can't believe I let that happen. I should have done something other than stand there like a statue. Why couldn't I do anything other than stand there and let Jared do that? Tom must think I'm a whore.
The mouthwash is traded out for my toothbrush and toothpaste as I continue replaying what the hell just happened. Jared showing up out of nowhere with flowers after years of saying they're meaningless because they'll just die. And of course, they were purple and green; self-centered prick was probably thinking of himself as he bought the Joker colors. I meet my own eyes in the mirror as I stand straight after spitting the toothpaste out. I have mascara tear streaks running down my cheeks. I've paled considerably enough to enhance the dark circles under my eyes. I look terminally ill.
I fix my makeup steaks quickly before walking out to the kitchen. "Do you want something to drink?" I ask Tom. "I have beer, Capri Sun, and water, but you'll have to drink out of a shot glass because the two cups I have are dirty." Tom opts for a CapriSun. I hand it to him as I sit on the opposite end of my couch. We sit in silence for a few minutes while I think of how to start talking and how much I want to tell him.
"Your apartment is quite nice," Tom starts, looking around at all the frames I have of the band and I. "Do you play all those?" He asks, gesturing to my elevated music area by my balcony door. On it is a bass guitar, acoustic and electric guitar, along with a keyboard and violin.
"Yeah, when my parents heard I wanted to make music because Jared was, they paid for multiple lessons. I fell in love with singing, but I can definitely shred it on bass." I joke. Tom laughs with a slight nod.
"How old were you when you met Jared again?" Tom asks in such a casual tone it calms me down slightly. Maybe he's just worried about me. Or maybe he just wants to know where Jared went wrong so he won't make the same mistakes, good or bad.
"I was introduced to him at fourteen." I avoid Tom's sudden worried look by looking at the floor beneath my sneakers. I should get a carpet in here. "My parents wanted to be millionaires, so they moved us all to LA when I was, like, three, I think. I don't know how they met Jared's family. They never told me, and neither did Jared.
"Everything was really innocent at first. He was my closest friend for years. He helped me with homework and practicing my music. I wanted to be just like him." I let out a bitter laugh. "I was sixteen when I realized I like him as more than a friend. We had to share a bed in a hotel on tour, and I remember not sleeping because he was right there, and he was cuddling me. He asked me out the day of my eighteenth and proposed two months later, married two more after that. We got divorced when I was twenty when I realized how much I really did miss out on life, and he was so possessive he stopped letting me go to band practice without him.
"The band started pointing it out too. Robbie was the one who literally slapped sense into me. Because why would I hit Robbie back and tell him off, but not Jared? So, yeah. Jared's super possessive and still is." I finish quickly, realizing I was going on a tangent.
"And he called you Jules?" I almost wished Tom would have forgotten about that. I know it's somewhere on my Wikipedia page, but would Tom have gone that far in learning about me?
"I've had three legal names in my life," I say, finally bringing myself to look at Tom. He seems concerned, and his eyes are so soft and welcoming I could curl up into his chest right this second. "Juliet Davis is my birth name, and I took Jared's last name when we got married. Then, about a year after our divorce, I decided to rebrand myself and use a new name entirely. Don't ask me why I chose Thompson; I googled it when I was drunk, and it just stuck. Stella is from this one kids' book I was obsessed with for years, Stellaluna. I don't know why, but I carried it everywhere with me until about junior high."
I guess I didn't notice the tears falling or that my voice was faltering. However, Tom did. Without hesitation, he pulls me into his arms, resting his head on mine. "I'm so sorry you had to go through all that, Love," He says in a soft voice. "You didn't deserve any of that. Thank you for sharing with me." I let him hold me for a while longer. I enjoy his touch, but I really just want to be alone to cry and break shit.
I don't know when I fell asleep; I just know when I woke up on the couch with a blanket on top of me and water on the coffee table in front of me, that Tom had taken care of me. He left a handwritten note as well, which I still have in my house. It said, 'I didn't want to leave you alone after something like tonight, but I felt it weird to stay the night uninvited. I truly appreciate you sharing something hard with me. I hope it's alright I washed a cup for you, and found some medicine as well, in case the crying caused a headache. Text me when you wake up. Much love, Tom.' Yes, I did run through the house like a crazy lady trying to find the letter so I could write it down verbatim.
Pokémon Alphabet Challenge: S is for Special
Just want to leave a little disclaimer that this is rated T. There is talk of sex and virginity, but nothing at all explicit.
She was not old enough for this.
“Seriously, Lily? Anti-aging cream?”
“Just to dab around the eyes!” Lily said, as though it was a defense. “Just make sure to use your ring finger. Provides the least pressure and pull.”
Misty knew that it was just another beauty product from her sisters that would end up dusty in her crowded bathroom mirror, but she smiled and thanked her sister for it anyway. It wasn’t that she didn’t like makeup or self-care products, but nine times out of ten, she just didn’t have the time or discipline for it. She was a special occasion makeup-wearer, and she enjoyed it, but that was plenty for her.
And today was one of those special occasions, and therefore why she was treating her sisters with a bit more grace than usual. It was her twenty-second birthday and, to be frank, she was just grateful that her sisters were in Cerulean for it.
The three of them were the only ones that she would get to celebrate with this year, after all. Brock was completing his residency, so they had hung out a few weeks prior, when he’d had time, and he’d promised to call today. Then tomorrow Misty would be making the trek to Pallet for Delia to throw a party for her, where Professor Oak and Tracey would show up. In the early years, Misty had tried to tell Delia that it wasn’t necessary to do all that for her, but then she realized that it gave Delia the opportunity to mother someone—something she missed a lot in Ash’s long absences. Now it was an unspoken ritual.
As for anyone else, phone calls and letters were all she had to expect, or even hope for. And that was fine. It was what it was.
Truth be told, she just didn’t care that much about her birthday. She appreciated the gifts from her sisters, and especially the fact that they picked up the slack in the Gym as she took the day off. But other than that, once you were above a certain age, the joy of birthdays just seemed to slip through the cracks, leaving you to wonder when you had gotten so old and cynical.
“Thanks for everything, guys,” Misty said, standing up from the living room couch with a big smile plastered on her face. “I think I’m going to go up to my room and rest.”
As she gathered her gifts and headed for her stairs, she heard Daisy calling. “Okay! Happy b-day, sis!”
It wasn’t just that birthdays weren’t fun anymore. Not that they’d ever been a hoot. She hadn’t had a lot of friends growing up and with her parents not being around, it was up to her sisters to do something for her even back then. And they always did give it a good try. There was always a cake and balloons, but the biggest thing for Misty was just that they were paying attention to her. But even that got old once she was nine and ten and in the phase where she just wanted them to leave her alone.
Then there was traveling with Ash and Brock. They couldn’t always celebrate, because sometimes the timing just worked out that they were on the road when someone’s birthday came up. But it was special. They didn’t have the money to afford any gifts, but Brock would always manage to come up with some tasty treat for them and everyone was really nice to each other. Ash and Misty would never fight when it was someone’s birthday. No one had needed to say it; they had just done it. Those were her favorite birthdays.
But now, back at the Gym…she just didn’t like getting older anymore. She’d always heard women even just in their late twenties groaning about getting old—heck, her sisters were at that stage now—and as a child, she’d thought it was ludicrous. Because even if her birthdays hadn’t been ones for the books, they were still some of the best days of the year.
She was beginning to understand. It wasn’t that these women were old, necessarily. They certainly weren’t senior citizens. It was that they were too old for something. For her sisters, it was that their metabolisms were beginning to catch up with them and they could no longer eat whatever they wanted. They’d started finding one or two gray hairs every few months. Anti-age cream wasn’t just preventative—the crows feet around their eyes was making it necessary.
Of course, her sisters were still beautiful. But when you had to keep up appearances that much, Misty knew it meant that every aging part of them stood out and needed to be addressed.
Ash’s mom was forty and for her it meant that she couldn’t read her recipes without reading glasses. She couldn’t go out and walk for hours without her hip hurting. Professor Oak was sixty and he was always having to hire new aids to take on the outdoor work with the Pokémon that he just couldn’t do anymore.
For Misty, on her twenty-second birthday, it meant that she was too old to be a virgin.
Worse than that, it was too old to have never been kissed. Too old to have never had a boyfriend. It made her feel pathetic.
“Azu! Azurill!”
Misty snapped out of it when she saw the baby Pokémon bouncing at her feet. She hadn’t realized how melancholy her thoughts had gotten on today of all days. When she was supposed to celebrate and feel good about herself.
Luckily, no matter the circumstances, Azurill always brought a smile to Misty’s lips. She placed her gifts on the ground—she’d tidy up later—and picked up Azurill in their stead.
“Hey, cutie! Are you wishing me a happy birthday?”
“Azu! Azu!”
Misty laughed as they rubbed noses and flopped onto her bed. She held Azurill over her head and began tossing it lightly in the air and catching it—one of their favorite games.
After a few good tosses, Misty set Azurill down on the bed and rolled onto her side. When she looked closely at Azurill, she could see how the playing had upped her heart rate, making the pink of her ears a little redder and flushing her usually white cheeks.
“It’s not so hard being alone when I have you, Azurill.”
“Rill!”
She had other things in her life—a full life—and didn’t need a man to feel whole. She was a powerful Gym Leader actively working toward her dream of being a Water Pokémon Master every day. She had friends—albeit not many, but the ones she had were the best—and her sisters. She was a busy person, and didn’t need to date.
That was the spiel she told herself. And it was all correct. Factually, logically correct. But after over five years of the spiel, it just didn’t make her feel much better anymore.
It wasn’t so bad at first. When she was sixteen and had never been kissed she was able to brush it off. She was an attractive girl and she had been asked on dates, after all. It wasn’t as though she hadn’t had the opportunity. She was just being picky. There was nothing wrong with that. Of course, her sisters had carried on with multiple boyfriends by the time they were sixteen and all of them had lost their virginities around that age. But Misty hadn’t wanted to emulate them in that way, so that made it all the better that she was choosy about her prospects.
It was one thing to have people that you know who are older than you to be dating and…copulating and all that. It was entirely different when they were younger than you.
May and Drew were barely teenagers when they started dating. They’d had their first kiss when May was twelve and Drew was thirteen. They’d done the deed about three years later. Since Drew and May were still together, that meant that May had been sexually active for four years and Misty was still a never-been-kissed virgin.
Then there was Dawn, who Misty had met a few years back when she’d done the Kanto Contest circuit. Dawn, who was young—four years Misty’s junior to be exact—but such a cool girl. She was beautiful and had such confidence and charm. When she’d seen Dawn perform at a Contest in Cerulean, she’d seen how taken the audience had been with her during the Appeals round, how talented she was in the Battle round. Not to say that she was necessarily more talented than Misty, because they competed in entirely different arenas, but she was undeniably special.
Dawn was younger, but so much cooler. She casually dated a lot, but she didn’t sleep around. But she’d still managed to lose her virginity the year before.
All of her friends were lapping her in terms of big life experiences. May was practically engaged, as it was, and Misty had never been on a second date. Nothing had changed for her since she was thirteen. And all that had Misty feeling a bit like a baby.
“Azurill?”
Azurill had a questioningly look in its eyes as it padded up to Misty’s face and patted her cheek. Misty sniffed.
“I’m not crying.”
And she wasn’t. But she was close.
“Dammit. I hate getting mopey on days that are supposed to be happy.”
Because her birthday wasn’t the only one. She hated having no one to kiss on New Year’s Eve, no one to kiss on Valentine’s Day, and, God forbid, no one to be her plus one at a wedding. She’d had to go to a few Gym Leaders’ weddings and being one of the youngest—and unattached—in attendance led to the dreaded question of: “When will it be your turn, dear?”
I don’t know, Agatha; why are you freaking asking me that?
Misty rubbed her eyes, staving off the tears as she dreaded the weight of another year of feeling this way. Every year it was: Well, maybe I’ll lose it by the time I’m twenty-two?
And here it was. Another deadline missed. Pushed back. Maybe before she was twenty-three?
It wasn’t that she was dying to lose it. Misty’s confidence hadn’t been that knocked down and she had complete certainty that if she donned one of her skimpier outfits and swished some mouthwash she could dance on over to the nearest bar and take home a guy for a lousy one-night stand.
But that’s not what she was after. That wasn’t what she had waited all this time for.
And yet, she’d always thought…always figured that by this point she’d have had a first love. Probably been heartbroken. Certainly been kissed. And she’d just assumed that she would have lost her virginity by now. Much as it made her feel dramatic to do so, she felt she had to mourn that person she’d expected herself to be. Because, like it or not, she was someone else, and that was the person she had to live with.
It was just the embarrassment. And living with her sisters made it difficult. They would talk on and on about who’d they’d been with, who had been enjoyable, who hadn’t, who they wish they’d hooked up with, who they regretted, sparing no detail because that was the kind of close relationship her sisters had with each other. And honestly, it was quite a switch from Misty’s childhood that she was even allowed in on their conversations together.
But a part of her really wished that she was still being kicked out of the room, told that the conversation wasn’t for runts—despite those conversations of yore having been about nothing more scandalous than pecks and hand holding.
Because when you were the only virgin in the room, it was palpable. She knew she was the only one. Her sisters knew she was the only one. And they all knew that they all knew. A few times one of her sisters would recount something scandalous and then turn to Misty and say, “Isn’t that right, little sister?” with a joking smile on their faces.
They were joking! Misty knew that, but she still had to snap at them to shut up and stalk away, not to speak to them for the rest of the day. It just pissed her off that, despite being included, she was a joke, just like she’d been as a kid. She was sick of that feeling.
It’s fine, Misty thought as a couple tears began to dribble down her nose and across her cheek. She’d just turn on a sad playlist and wallow for a little while, then put on a fresh face when she was done. On her birthday, she at least deserved the opportunity for some bother-free sulking.
“Misty! Come downstairs!”
Misty put her face in her damp pillow and took a heavy breath, suppressing the frustration and irritation. Then she lifted her head, and bellowed, “Later, Daisy!” with all her might, hoping that her voice sounded angry and betrayed nothing further.
“No! Like, you wanna come down right now!”
Birthday or not, Misty knew just from the tone of voice that there was no way she would get away with ignoring Daisy. This wasn’t an I’m-gonna-forget-in-a-couple-minutes-anyway kind of call. It was an I’m-gonna-barge-into-your-room-even-if-you’re-topless kind of call.
Misty took another deep breath to heave out “Coming!” before rolling off her bed to prepare to look like a birthday girl again. The first thing she did was wipe away the tears. Her chronically cold hands felt amazing on her hot face, so she pressed them into her eyes and took a couple more breaths.
Her sisters weren’t the only ones who could put on a show.
When Misty looked into the mirror, she saw that her eyes were red and her face was a little splotchy. Her skin would fade into its usual creamy, if slightly uneven hue in a few minutes—she didn’t need to put on foundation or anything. But the eyes. Misty found her trusty brown eyeliner and mascara and drew a few decently practiced swipes. If the makeup didn’t distract from the redness, she could always say she’d poked herself in the eye. She gave her dry hair a little zhuzh with a light ruffle of her hands and smiled into the mirror.
“You like it, Azurill?
“Zu zu!”
Birthday girl was back.
After promising Azurill that she’d be back later, Misty began walking downstairs. She expected to see Daisy at the bottom of the staircase, but she must have skittered away after hollering for Misty.
“Daisy?”
“In the lobby!”
Misty’s hand went right to the flared skirt of her short birthday dress. It was royal blue with a fitted bodice and spaghetti straps and even now, with no shoes on, it gave her miles and miles of leg. Not the look that she usually performed her Gym Leader duties in, but she supposed there was nothing wrong with showing off her feminine side as she battled. She was wearing shorts underneath, after all.
Still, she felt naked without her PokéBelt as she went to the lobby to greet whatever Trainer must have stopped in, aiming to earn the Cascade Badge today.
Well, tough noogies. Misty wasn’t about to lose a Battle on her birthday.
Misty walked to the lobby feeling a little more fire in her veins, more like her normal self as all thoughts of romance and sex left her mind, instead replaced with thoughts of which Pokémon she would use in the Battle. Probably Gyarados, just to make it easy.
Then it all came out from under her.
“Ash?”
The word broke into multiple syllables in Misty’s mouth as her surprise shook her. Ash was there. Ash, who she’d last seen months ago in Alola. Traveling Ash was in her Gym’s lobby.
“Hey, Mist.”
That was all she needed.
A grin bubbled up onto Misty’s face and she ran the couple steps that it took to cross the lobby and wrapped her arms around Ash as she felt all of her melancholy from earlier slip away, at least for the moment.
“Pikachupi!”
Pikachu hopped from Ash’s shoulder to Misty’s, and she took one arm off of Ash and pressed Pikachu into her neck. “Aw, I missed you too, Pikachu,” Misty cooed, her voice muffled against Ash’s shoulder.
“I’ll leave you two to it,” Daisy said, and Misty heard her footsteps trail out of the room. She pulled herself away from Ash, Pikachu still on her shoulder.
“Ash, what are you doing here? The Alola League was months ago; where have you been?”
Ash rubbed the back of his head sheepishly. His hair was more angular than it had been in Alola, losing some of the frizziness the humidity had created. And his tan skin was bronzy, just as she’d grown used to seeing it the past couple of years: warm with a hint of pink on the cheekbones. She knew Delia had been bothering him about wearing sunscreen every day, though, so she wasn’t too worried about that.
“I’ve actually been working my way through the Alola Battle Tree. Did you know that every region has a kind of training competition that only people who have qualified for the League can participate in?”
“Is that why you’re back in Kanto?”
Ash grinned. “That’s it! I thought I could go through and challenge them all and, you know, work up my skills so that I can make sure that I win the next League!”
“Hah, fat chance!”
“Hey!”
And just like that, it was as though no time had passed. They could bicker and talk about Pokémon all while Misty stroked the side of Pikachu’s face, right where he liked it. All was right in the world.
“You know, I am going to visit your mother in Pallet tomorrow, Ash. You could have just waited until then to see me.”
Ash shrugged. “But then it wouldn’t have been your birthday.”
Misty’s heart did a little flip-flop at that. He said it like it was so simple, but still, the gesture meant everything to her.
“Pika pika!”
Pikachu was gesturing to a plastic bag Ash was holding in one hand and he looked down at it, seeming to have forgotten that it was hanging there, cutting off the circulation from his first and second fingers. He seemed to blush a little bit, pulling that old trick of lowering his hat over his face to hide it. He cleared his throat. “Oh, right. See, I didn’t exactly manage to pull much of a gift together. I thought about it too late and then I wasn’t sure what you would want, so I put it off until I got here and then…this was all I could think of.”
Out of the bag, he pulled out a carton of vanilla ice cream. Full fat.
Misty raised an eyebrow. “Caramel sauce?”
Ash raised the bag up and she could see something else weighing the bottom down, and a familiar, shiny brown logo peeking through at her.
“Sorry that it’s not something more special—”
“No, it’s perfect!” Misty put her free arm around Ash again and gave his waist a squeeze. Then she whispered, “It’s perfect because you’re here.”
“And because I actually remembered your favorite?”
She gave him another squeeze. “And because somewhere in that pea-sized brain of yours, you managed to remember my favorite.”
“You know I’m only letting that pass because it’s your birthday.”
“Whatever. Let’s go to the kitchen.”
Misty linked her arm with Ash’s and pulled out of the lobby and into the house proper. In the kitchen, she plucked out her favorite bowls—painted and sculpted to look like halved berries—and loaded up both of their bowls with as much ice cream as she could manage without it dripping over the sides. Once she poured on the caramel, she handed the Oran Berry one to Ash and kept the Leppa for herself.
“Don’t think I forgot about you, Pikachu,” Misty said as she scooted a less full Aspear Berry bowl down the counter for him. He hopped off her shoulder and immediately began lapping at the bowl, shivering pleasurably as the dessert cooled him.
“Hey, why does yours have so much more caramel?”
“Because I don’t want to deal with your sugar rush in twenty minutes, Ash! Besides, I’m the birthday girl.”
“You know, we should put a limit on how many times you can use that excuse,” Ash grumbled as he took a bite of ice cream.
“We do! It’s one day out of three hundred and sixty-five.” Misty slowly licked a spoon filled with pure caramel victoriously in Ash’s face.
“Hah, very clever.”
“I am.”
Violet, who was passing by in the living room with a pile of towels shouted out, “Oh, get a room you two.”
Abruptly, Misty froze, save for sticking her spoon back into her bowl as blood rose to her face. She realized belatedly how that moment of triumph also could have looked very salacious. Perhaps her earlier thought-spiral had left her especially sensitive, but for her sister to say that with Ash around? Her body stung with the awkwardness as she shouted back. “Shut up, Violet! Go check the pool for lime!”
Violet didn’t seem to notice how her comment had affected her sister as she flounced over to the locker rooms with the clean towels. “Aw, you’re, like, no fun at all.”
Misty took a big bite of ice cream, hoping that its chill would cool down her practically steaming face and push back her blush. She could feel it up to her hairline.
“What did she mean by that?”
Misty, who hadn’t dared to look anywhere but her ice cream, raised her gaze to Ash’s in shock. But there he was, wide-eyed and totally genuine in his confusion. Misty couldn’t help but smile.
“It was nothing, Ash. Inside joke.”
At that, Ash’s dopey grin arose again and he said, “Oh, that’s cool. Glad you guys have those now.”
“Yeah.”
Misty looked at Ash as he ate his ice cream, the one food he ate much slower than her. And as she looked at her old friend, she really took him in. Ash had turned twenty-two only the month before; they were almost exactly the same age. They’d known each other for twelve years, having traveled together for the most formative part of that time. Even now, with more years apart than together, they knew each other so well.
Ash had had his first kiss already. Misty knew that. She’d witnessed him being kissed years ago, and she knew that he had that on her.
But she also knew that he hadn’t dated. He hadn’t asked anyone out and he certainly hadn’t yet had sex or anything close. And maybe she was wrong about this, but she would wager that it didn’t bother him at all. Whatever the reasons, he wasn’t ready yet. If it was something that he’d ever want to do. And when she looked at him, she didn’t feel like he should be embarrassed about any of that part of the story of who he was.
It didn’t make her feel better about herself. For her, the embarrassment was still there, even if she didn’t believe that Ash should carry it. But what made her feel indubitably better that he was in the same position as her. It made her feel as though she had a companion, a partner in crime.
It made her feel like she wasn’t alone.
Impulsively, she put a hand on his shoulder, which drew his surprised eyes down to hers immediately. “I’m really glad you’re here.”
Mouth still full of ice cream, Ash gurgled out, “You already said something like that.”
“I know.”
A part of her still hoped that Ash would be the person that she would do some of those things with. She’d gotten really got at forgetting about it when they weren’t together, but in these moments of tight proximity, she felt the tightening of her stomach that could only mean that she was around her first—and only—big crush.
With startling clarity, Misty realized that if it meant being with him, she was willing to wait. For as long as necessary. Until he was ready.
Misty suddenly felt her eyes go soft as she looked into Ash’s again. Punctuated by the sound of Pikachu still licking his bowl, she thought this boy means the world to me. He looked confused as to why she was still holding him tenderly and being, well, very un-Misty-like. She couldn’t help but laugh as she pulled back, attention back on ice cream. Hers had already started to become terribly melted.
“Do you want more caramel sauce?”
Ash’s eyebrows rose. “You sure you can deal with me on that sugar high?”
“I can always deal with you, Ash.”
A/N: To be clear, I am not promoting abstinence or non-abstinence. The 'right time' for everyone is different. I just want there to be more representation of adults who don't lose their virginities until they're older, because I think it's an underrepresented thing that makes people feel unnecessary shame or embarrassment when it’s totally normal. <3
Thyme Machine (Hoshino Tetsuro - Galaxy Express 999)
Galaxy Express 999 is my favorite anime series of all time, not to mention one of the largest inspirations for my writing style. It’s so hard to believe that it will be celebrating its 40th anniversary next year!
With that in mind, I’m planning to complete a Maetel cosplay and go to a few conventions in 2018. I also recently bought a rare Tetsuro figurine on eBay and am looking for the Maetel to go along with him.
The good news is that despite this being an older anime, it is a classic. You can presently find the series on Crunchyroll, and the three tie-in movies are an affordable price on Amazon.
If you love science fiction or stories about the moral ramifications of transhumanism, this may be the show for you. Every few years or so, I do a full rewatch because a part of my soul craves it.
And Hoshino Tetsuro (the main character) is one of my favorite fictional characters, regardless of fandom.
He starts out as a rather generic shonen series protagonist: after having gone through something truly traumatic (the murder of his mother), Tetsuro joins a mysterious woman (Maetel) on board the Galaxy Express 999 with the end goal of getting a mechanical body. He spends most of the series believing that this is what he wants...but then something truly magical happens.
He changes his mind. After going through the entire journey, he has a moment of realization that what he thought he wanted isn’t what he truly wants...but it may end up being forced on him anyway. I won’t spoil the ending. It makes me cry every time.
He’s a very lovable kid. A little too trusting, a little too naive, and sometimes a little dense and stubborn, but he’s a very good soul and you want to root for him: whatever he decides to do.
I wanted his bath bomb to smell like the start of Autumn: the transformation of the seasons as dramatic as a young boy’s transformation into an adolescent.
The water turns the color of rust.
Red Thyme Essential Oil
Red Thyme has an unforgettable, warm, herbal smell reminiscent of a dry rub or your first real scents of autumn air.
There are two types of “fall” scents for me. One of them is Pumpkin Spice (which, by the way, Brambleberry carries a fragrance oil for). The other one has no real name, but conjures up thoughts of walking through a forest full of dead, dry leaves on the first cold evening of the season. Red Thyme is exactly that.
Pros:
The medical benefits of Thyme have been known to the Mediterranean part of the world for thousands of years. It is also a commonly prescribed herb in Ayurvedic Medicine.
Alleviate several illnesses! Red Thyme can be used to relieve and reduce the impact of chronic ailments such as gout, chronic fatigue syndrome, menstrual and menopausal problems, and athlete’s foot. It’s also a lovely hangover cure.
It has antidepressant properties! Red Thyme has an anti-anxiety component to its chemical makeup. When diffused or applied with a carrier oil, it can reduce the impact of depression, strengthen cognition, and calm jittery nerves.
It’s an asthma-safe oil and works wonders on respiratory problems! Got a nasty autumn cough you can’t shake? What about the early signs of a sore throat? Red Thyme may be able to help you. It certainly does for me!
Improve your skin! Red Thyme can reduce the amount of sebum your pores extract, meaning it can reduce your chances for acne or sebaceous cysts. It can clear up oily skin, as well as speed up the healing process for scars. As for aged skin, Red Thyme is a wonderful toner.
Reduce hair loss! Red Thyme, when added to shampoos and other hair products, can reduce or even prevent hair loss for some people.
It can be used to improve your oral health! Like Peppermint, Spearmint, Eucalyptus, Rosemary, Lemon, and Wintergreen, Red Thyme Essential Oil can be added to a mouthwash or oral rinse to fix bad breath and improve the health of your gums.
Bugs HATE Red Thyme, so keep the creepy-crawlies at bay! Mosquitoes, lice, moths, ticks, and fleas in particular hate Red Thyme. That said, I really wish roaches were on that list. Your best oil for that is still Peppermint.
Cons
: The good news is that there are very few side effects to Red Thyme Essential Oil. It is generally safe for most people to use, but it’s never a bad idea to first consult your physician before adding essential oils to your daily health routine.
This is not a cat-friendly oil. In fact, Red Thyme is listed in several places as one of the worst things you can diffuse around your cat. As much as I love this essential oil, I always lock Gaius out of the room if I choose to diffuse this one.
Some people are allergic to thyme. It’s actually not that uncommon. If you are allergic to other plants in the Lamiaceae family (Basil, Sage, Rosemary, Lavender, etc.), you may have a sensitivity to Red Thyme Essential Oil. Allergies may surface as gastrointestinal issues (fussy stomach, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting) if ingested.
If you have sensitive skin, do not apply Red Thyme neat to your skin. While Red Thyme is generally safe, some people have experienced inflammation, hives, rashes, itchiness, and redness when the oil is applied to the skin without being properly diluted with a carrier oil. The good news is that Thyme Machine contains fractionated coconut oil as a carrier. If that doesn’t dilute the Thyme enough, the bath water will.
Red Thyme is an emmenagogue and should NOT be used by pregnant women. I use Red Thyme for a number of reasons. One of them is to regulate my period, as it’s started to come a bit more slowly since I started dieting in April (every 5 weeks instead of every 4). Red Thyme has emmenagogue properties, which means that it stimulates menstruation. Menstruation is something you do not want when you’re pregnant, as it could potentially be dangerous for the fetus or trigger premature labor or a miscarriage.
Exercise caution if you have hypertension. Red Thyme can be used to increase circulation, meaning your blood pressure may rise while using this oil. If you are already dealing with hypertension or experience palpitations on the regular, Red Thyme Essential Oil might not play nicely with you.
Exercise caution if you have hyperthyroidism. Red Thyme may stimulate the thyroid gland for some people.
Immortelle Essential Oil
Immortelle (also called Helichrysum or Helichrysum Italicum) is one of the most popular essential oils one can buy, mostly for all its wonderful therapeutic benefits. The plant comes from a member of the Sunflower family.
Immortelle has a “dead leaf” scent to it, but also reminds me of the wild goldenrod that used to grow on the side of the Georgia highway in the fall. It’s a flower oil, but doesn’t smell floral at all. It’s more herbal, and even a tad earthy.
Pros:
Immortelle is a good friend when you’re in pain! I originally bought this essential oil because it was Prime day, a company had a good sale on it, and I saw that it is mostly toted as a pain relief oil--which I need, suffering from a chronic pain issue. Immortelle eases nerve, joint, and muscular pain. In fact, it’s one of the best essential oils you can purchase if you have fibromyalgia: like me!
Keep your skin clean and healthy with Immortelle! A study was conducted by the Health Sciences Research Centre in Portugal’s University of Beira. In this study, it was determined that Immortelle Essential Oil was effective against bacterial and fungal growths responsible for various skin problems including irritation, rashes, infections, and wounds that took a long time to properly heal.
Stop itching from poison ivy! Mix Immortelle and Lavender Essential Oils together with a jojoba carrier oil to stop the itching and soothe the inflamed tissue.
Fight acne! Immortelle targets and combats a lot of the fungi and bacteria responsible for acne outbreaks. Unlike alcohol-based astringents, Immortelle doesn’t dry out the skin and soothes anything that’s red and irritated.
Reduce inflammation! Immortelle can stimulate blood flow, improve smooth muscle function, and reduce inflammation. This also has the benefit of lowering high blood pressure.
Immortelle is both a digestive and diuretic aid! Immortelle encourages bile flow within your body, which speeds up the digestion of food. It also has diuretic properties, which encourage your kidneys to expel urine faster. This makes it a wonderful assistant in helping you get rid of that unwanted water weight when you’re feeling bloated.
Soothe sunburned skin! Immortelle can soothe and rehydrate burnt skin. The oil can also reduce the amount of damage a person experiences to UV light (which is a pleasant change from Citrus oils, which increase your sensitivity).
Cons:
Immortelle is NOT a cat-safe oil. Do not diffuse if your cat’s in the room with you and can’t get out.
Not enough is known about Immortelle Essential Oil and pregnancy for this oil to be a safe choice for people who are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or nursing.
People with gallstone issues may experience severe stomach cramps from prolonged use to Immortelle Essential Oil.
Do not use this essential oil if you have had past issues with blocked bile ducts. Immortelle may stimulate your body to produce more bile, which will lead to its own set of complications.
Immortelle is best avoided if you are allergic to ragweed, daisies, chrysanthemums, marigolds, or sunflowers.
Eine Spielliste
In den letzten Tagen bzw. Nächten war es mal wieder an der Zeit ... eine Liste musste her. Nicht irgendeine. Eine Spielliste -engl. Playlist - und die sollte nicht weniger enthalten, als alle Songs, die ich in den nun fast 43 Jahren auf meinen Ohren hatte und immer wieder gerne habe. Einige der Stücke sind autobiographisch angehaucht - durch Liebeskummer in der Jugend, tolle Urlaubserlebnisse oder tolle Parties geprägt. Anderes ist einfach so herein geflattert.... und beim Sichten einiger der Texte/Lyrics könnte man zu dem Schluss kommen, ich müsste dringend mal eine Therapie anfangen. Wie es auch immer dazu gekommen ist, dass sich ein Lied auf die Liste geschummelt hat... hier ist sie - 210 Songs - und mir fallen in diesem Moment schon wieder Lieder ein, die ich vergessen habe.... to be continued.
Self-Para: Smoke and Sunset
It was late after dinner, the third night of Daisy’s stay, when she saw smoke rising up in front of her window. She peered outside and found Gen smoking in the garden. Within a few minutes Daisy snuck through the door and flashed her phone light at her, “Genesis Starshine Martinas, are you smoking?” She said in a trill whisper.
Gen clutched her heart, and rolled her eyes, “Honestly, Herizen.” She chastised as Daisy walked out to join her. “Those are my cigarettes after all.” She argued, taking one from the box. Gen, now caught in the act, lit one for her. “You did a good thing coming here, Herizen.” She said, blowing smoke out into the night.
“I know.” Daisy nodded. “You’re proud of me.” She teased. Gen wasn’t one for reactions, she played her cards very close to her chest, and rarely revealed them to anyone, even George. She flicked away the ashes of her cigarette, “I’ve always been proud of you.” This admission took Daisy back.
Then Gen continued, “There was a time, a little less than eight years back. We were gonna lose the house. I started working three jobs, I almost dropped out of night school. George was sparing every penny to help out. I mean, mom and dad got married in this house, right there in the sun room, I was there. You were conceived here, and born right up there in your room. Mom grew this garden, Dad built this porch.” Her hand ran over the porch’s wooden railing. “And then you pulled through for us, this wad of crumpled hundred dollar bills in an old coffee can, and you saved us. George gave it to me, said you’d done fundraising or something.” She shrugged. “You saved us.”
Gen sniffled and stomped out the butt of her cigarette, taking the box and the lighter with her. “Please brush your teeth once you’re done. And use mouthwash. This is such a disgusting habit.” Then she was gone.
Fundraising, is that what you called it, George? She thought, sparing a glance up to their bedroom window, where a shadow stood, watching over her.
Great First Dates
You have mustered all your courage and asked out the person of your dreams. You’re walking on sunshine because they said yes, and now you have a great opportunity to make a fantastic impression. Once you begin planning your perfect first date, the obvious questions quickly come to mind: Where do you go? What do you do? How do you act? Everyone wants to make their first date something you can fondly look back on if the relationship becomes long-term. With these tips and ideas you’ll be quickly on your way to date two and more… What To Do
Before you decide on what to do, take some time to consider your date’s personality. Are they more likely to enjoy an intimate romantic evening or an adventurous thrill ride? Another thing to consider is that, while concerts and movies are great entertainment, they are not conducive to great conversation. Therefore, if you want to get to know your date a little better, plan some extra time for a meal or walk in a setting where you can talk. Once you have decided the style of date you want, use some of the tips below to help make it really special.
Places to go; things to do: ¦Theme parks can be great for first dates. A lot of parks have great food and great entertainment. For example, you can ride roller coasters and hold hands while you tour the grounds, sampling the foods from different vendors.
¦Take your date to a movie or concert in the park. Many cities now show films played after dark in their parks. Another bonus is that they are often free so you can spend your money on a great meal or accents that really make the date special.
¦For an intimate date in an extremely romantic setting, take your date out for dinner or drinks on a sunset cruise.
¦Wine tasting is a great date idea because you can get to know each other while enjoying the experience of tasting and learning about wine. Almost all wineries offer guided tasting tours and some even offer dinner packages.
¦For more adventurous personalities, thrilling outdoor activities such as parasailing or white water rafting are great summertime dates.
¦If you are looking for intimate conversation, the zoo is a great place to go. There is a great opportunity to talk while exploring the exhibits. Many zoos also have cafes, ice-cream shops, and grassy areas for picnicking.
¦Another unique cold weather activity ripe with romantic possibilities is ice skating. Skip the crowds — play hooky and join each other for a weekday afternoon matinee. You should each enjoy the added physical proximity you’ll get with helping each other up or keeping each other warm.
¦For an interesting insight into your date’s personality, take them to a comedy club. Not only will you have fun, you can also learn a lot about your date by observing what type of jokes they find funny.
¦If your date is a sports fan, taking them to a sporting event is one of the best ways to make a good impression. They also happen to be great fun!
¦Going to the beach is also a great way to spend the day with your date. There are a number of great activities available depending on the time of year, such as flying a kite, swimming, or just going for a romantic stroll. And what better way to end the date than cuddling next to a campfire, roasting marshmallows as you watch the sun set?
¦If you are looking for something a little outside the box, consider visiting an art gallery or museum. Make it a game to see who can come up with the most interesting story about a piece of art, the artist or an exhibit. This can be great fun, especially if you each have no idea what you are talking about! This can also give you some great insights into each other that you might not get on a “normal” date.
¦Probably one of the most overlooked great first dates is the home-cooked meal. Everyone loves good food and this is definitely a chance to showcase your talents in the kitchen. For a man or a woman, cooking for your date is a sure way to win bonus points!
First Date Tips for Him
¦The chances are extremely high that you are not going to be making love after your first date, so do not push for it.
¦At the end of the date, try kissing her cheek and see what her response is before moving to the lips.
¦Make sure you have enough money to pay for everything on the first date, even her cab ride home if neither of you drove!
¦Smell good, but don’t overdo the cologne.
¦Dress to impress. If you are fashion challenged, have a lady friend or a department store representative assist you in choosing your outfit.
First Date Tips for Her ¦
Wear something comfortable. Dealing with constricting clothing and uncomfortable shoes can turn a great date painful.
¦Don’t under or overeat. Men don’t like women to order only dinner salads, but they don’t want to watch you gorge yourself either.
¦Send the right message with what you wear. If you are just looking for a one night stand, then dress like it. If you aren’t, then dress accordingly.
¦Don’t drill him. Let conversation happen naturally. You want to get to know him, at his own pace. Give him the same respect you expect from him.
¦Don’t be too quick to judge. It’s easy for women to sit back while the man stresses about his performance and compare him to your last 12 dates, but your date is not an interview. Be cautious and smart, but be open-minded and kind as well.
First Date Tips for Both
¦If you can, try and surprise your partner with something that shows you did your homework. For example, instead of showing up at her doorstep with the traditional red roses, surprise her with a bouquet of daisies because you found out that it’s her favorite flower. For her, offer to get the drinks and bring back his favorite cocktail to let him know you checked him out!
¦Be assertive, but easy going. Follow the other person’s signs, but don’t go along with something you are uncomfortable with.
¦Dating is about getting to know each other, so be yourself. Months or years later, couples often find themselves disappointed that the person they are involved with isn’t the same person they started dating. Avoid this by being yourself in the first place.
¦In almost any situation, talking about your ex on your first date is a really bad idea. If you date asks about your ex, don’t fall into the trap of detailing every character flaw they had.
¦Be aware of the proper etiquette for where you are and be polite, using good manners.
¦Take a spontaneous walk after the date, especially if you went to dinner or a show. Stop for ice-cream, pie, coffee, or some other treat while you walk and talk. You may want to hold hands, but follow the other’s lead.
¦If you are not paying, be considerate of your dinner bill. Stay in the middle range of the menu.
¦Pack along travel size mouthwash, mints, or gum to make sure you are fresh even if you don’t plan on kissing.
Take a hint from these great romantic movies: ¦The Notebook – He dances with her in the street, they learn a lot about each other on their first night together. In another scene, he sets up candles and blankets in a beautiful deserted house that he dreams of owning someday. Later in the movie he takes her to another special place on a boat to see an amazing sight. This movie is a fabulous resource for romantic date ideas.
¦Hitched – They take wave runners out to an island museum where he has prepared something very personal and special for her. It doesn’t work out as planned in the movie, but the date idea was great!
¦You’ve Got Mail – They dated as friends without admitting they are dating. They eat, have coffee, and shop at the local market together. Everything is casual, yet extremely intimate.
¦50 First Dates – He gets shot down many times, but manages to spend some great days with her where they go to the aquarium, hang at the beach, eat breakfast together, walk and talk, and more.
¦Before Sunrise – With practically no funds, they spend a whole afternoon, evening, night, and morning together.
