My biggest issue (so far) with Daisy Jones and The Six is how sanitized it feels. I understand some things get lost in translation from book to screen, but I've always felt the format of the book would have handed itself to a "better" (and by that I mean faithful) adaptation.

For whatever reason, Pete isn't a character. It's not to say that he's missed, but there's no legitimate reason that he's not there. Besides that, the storyline with Chuck was altered. In the book, Chuck was drafted to serve in Vietnam. The show changes this to make Chuck become a dentist. In my opinion, changing Chuck's fate is a dodging tough topics. It's no secret that the US's involvement in Vietnam was controversial, especially within the circles that the characters would have been involved in. So changing this just didn't sit right with me.

And then there's the characterization of Daisy. In the book Daisy wasn't this hardworking, scrappy, go-getter with a heart of gold that the show is portraying her as. By the time she's introduced to the Six, she's already running in the same groups as big timer rock and roll bands, she modeled for fashion agencies, her agent rents her a cottage at the Chateau Marmont. She's not busing tables and begging Simone for a bed with a practically inedible dinner. In the book, Daisy is already struggling with addiction. I just feel like the show is making her some kind of ingenue, when in the novel she's just talented without all that spunky attitude. She's got grit, but in a sense of she's seen things, she's been places, she's in the inner circle already.

I don't know. I'll be interested to see how the show depicts her addiction, her relationship with Billy, and by extension Camila.

I really adore the casually prioritized importance of friendships in the new Twisters movie. Like obviously there were sparks of romance that i thoroughly enjoyed but the point is that that was never the point. The way that Javi and Kate took care of each other and looked out for each other even when they were fighting. The way the whole tornado wranglers crew acted like family and welcomed Kate right in. The way Tyler was genuinely interested in getting to know Kate and working together with her. There was no big fight between Javi and Tyler over Kate or anybody else. Kate spent the whole movie processing a lot of trauma and was able to be supported by the friends surrounding her instead of having all of her interactions stopped up with an intense budding romance. I just really love it when friendship and people are the most important things.

I don't know how well I can put my thoughts about this exchange into words, but I'm gonna try.

Kate has resolutely kept her walls up around Tyler for the majority of their interactions, but she just chose to be incredibly vulnerable with him. She let him see a fraction of how much pain she carries with her and it stops him in his tracks. (The camera literally stops panning around them the moment her dam bursts, and he stands completely still as she pours out her guilt over her past failure.)

Tyler respects Kate. He admires her capacity to read and to tackle this thing they both love. But now, for the first time, he's beginning to understand just how challenging storm chasing again actually is for her. How much fear and sorrow, how much trauma and torment it carries for her. He is stilled by the realization that this clever, fascinating woman is trapped under the weight of her past, and he gently encourages her to consider taking ownership of that pain by acting rather than surrendering.

But she's not ready. She side-steps his question entirely, stating that he should rest so he doesn't miss any storms the next day while wiping her tears away and trying for a bit of a smile.

And look at the way that shatters him.

He cuts himself off from replying and the grief in his face as he shakes his head and looks down shreds my heartstrings. Storm chasing is absolutely the last thing on his mind right now; he's concerned for her. He has taken every possible opportunity to seek her out in an effort to understand her since the moment their paths crossed. So maybe he's blindsided by the idea that she thinks his primary concern is not missing any storms. Normally, that might be true. He absolutely loves his job. The joy he finds out in the field chasing tornadoes radiates from his entire being every time he does it. And yet none of that passion comes close to how much he is centered on her and her pain in this moment.

But he can't tell her that. He's not ready to admit she is his primary concern and I think he recognizes in this moment that she's not ready to hear that yet either. She has effectively ended the conversation and dismissed him for the night. So he raises his eyebrows in a subtle agreement to go along with what she has said and he clamps his mouth shut. He returns her research notes to her and silently exits the barn to give her space.

And I cannot stop thinking about how much he just conveyed about the depth of his feelings for her with just a few micro expressions.

I’ve seen Twisters a few times now, and there’s some things I keep thinking about.

I’m writing a new social media story and so I was thinking about how Javi was in the lion truck. Lion was looking for courage and Kate coming back and standing up to her friend about what was right and wrong gave Javi the courage to leave storm par and Riggs. The asshole Scott was in the scarecrow truck. Scarecrow was looking for a brain and that guy didn’t think for himself. He just followed orders from Riggs and never had an original thought. Tin man was the other one and they barely had any screen time. Any soul, if you will so they didn’t have a heart.

I don’t know if anyone else has been thinking this or if I’m too hyperfocused lol (probably)
